2022’s Top Engagement Ring Trends

Will 2022 be the year of your proposal? Start off on the right foot by taking a look at what’s trending in the world of engagement rings. Learn from real-life James Allen customers about what they love best, and why!

As we watch 2021 disappear into the back mirror, we’re looking ahead to 2022’s already-trending rings. After the upheaval of the past two years, it’s becoming clear that ring-shoppers are finally feeling more stable and certain regarding the future – and they’re no longer holding back on the sparkle. 2022’s looking like it’s going to be the year of the bling. Get ready for large diamonds and lots of them!

Pavé Rings

Pavé is popular, has always been popular, and we’re confident in saying that pavé engagement rings will continue dominating in 2022. They’re beloved due to their impact: size ratio. Pavé diamonds are tiny – so they’re affordable, and pavé rings normally contain dozens of them – so you get ALL the facets. Why aren’t pavé rings more expensive, if they’re set with so many stones? Well, it’s because diamonds increase in value as their carat weight goes up, but the price increase is somewhat exponential. In other words, a ring with a handful of tiny diamonds with a total weight of 1 carat will almost always cost less than a single, 1 carat diamond engagement ring. You get more diamonds, and you pay less.

About those facets. Pavé-set diamonds give rings a uniquely glittery quality, thanks to the hundreds of delicate facets that refract light in different directions with even the slightest shift of the finger.

Side Stone Engagement Rings

In 2022 it became clear that ring-shoppers weren’t holding back on the bling. If pavé adds substantial sparkle, side-stones add even more. The larger stones, with their larger facts, refract light quite impressively. Side stones give off less of a glittery effect and more of a “segmental” effect; broader gleams of light that catch the eye one by one.

Matching Ring Sets

2022 is all about matching sets. There’s something particularly satisfying about a wedding ring that’s literally made for your engagement ring. Your center diamond is lovely on its own, wait until you see how it looks with your custom-made wedding band!

Advantages of matching wedding sets:

  1. No need to search for a wedding band
  2. It’s guaranteed that your wedding set will sit perfectly flush to your engagement ring
  3. More of a good thing: if you love your engagement ring, you’ll get more of what you love in your wedding ring
  4. All-in-one purchase: you can purchase both your rings at once, which can save you money.

Lab Created Diamond Engagement Rings

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: lab created diamonds are the stones of the future. Though lab created diamonds were popular before 2020, the COVID pandemic and supply chain disruptions made them an even more attractive choice for ring shoppers.

Their attractive pricing and superb quality earned them first place on diamond enthusiasts’ wishlists, particularly those who are budget-conscious; for the same price as an earth-created diamond, consumers can get a lab created diamond that’s 30% larger!

We don’t see this trend waning; on the contrary, sales of lab-created diamonds have continued to increase year after year. Despite their different origins, earth-created and lab created diamonds are 100% chemically and structurally identical.

The difference in price comes from the fact that it’s much easier, and quicker, to grow a diamond in a lab than it is to locate and wrest it from deep within the earth. Creation process aside, once they arrive at your door they are completely identical regarding quality, durability, and sparkle. That’s why we consider lab-created diamonds to be the ultimate life hack.

The Last Word

If you’re shopping for rings in 2022, look to your peers for inspiration. And they’re definitely not skimping on the sparkle! Keep an eye out for pavé, side-stones, matching sets, and lab-created diamonds. But most importantly, choose what suits you. Still unsure? At we’re at your service 24/7.

Finding Her Engagement Ring Style: A Wink & A Smile

Whether you’re a secret agent or a straight shooter, check out our pro tips for finding her engagement ring style.

finding her engagement ring style cover

Everyone has a personal style. Some are more understated than others and, therefore, harder to discern. Your job as Buyer of Rings, Proposer of Marriage, is to hone in on that style by whatever means necessary. Put on your detective hat and do some snooping around or straight up ask your partner what she’d like. Either way, finding her engagement ring style needn’t be a chore with our handy guide. Just pop on some good music and get sleuthing.

Finding Her Engagement Ring Style: Cut to the Chase

finding her engagement ring style cut to the chase

Let’s start by clearing something up: the ring doesn’t have to be a complete surprise.

There, we’ve said it.

These days, it’s perfectly acceptable – preferable even – to bring your partner into the design process. No one knows the wearer’s style better than the wearer herself, so why not involve her in the decision making? Goodness knows you’ll need all the help you can get when confronted with terms like pavé, halo, and tension! (That last one’s a setting style btw, not a headache.) By promoting your partner to Chief Ring Adviser, you’ll come across as the sensitive and considerate human being you are while eliminating much of the guesswork. It’s a win-win.

Now, the direct approach won’t work for everyone, mind you. Some customers – proposer and proposee alike – have their hearts set on a solo ring selection, culminating in the Big Reveal. To those irrepressible romantics, we say… read on!

Finding Her Engagement Ring Style: A Spy on the Wall

Like all good detectives, you’ve been waiting for the right case to come along; a case worthy of your powers of deduction. Finding her engagement ring style is right up there with #WhoBitBeyoncé and that whole Yanny vs Laurel thing – except the odds of you solving this one are far higher!

Seriously though, your partner’s online and offline activity might give away key clues about her ring preferences. If she has a Pinterest account, it’s worth checking to see if she’s created any boards with sparkle-related titles or pinned any specific rings. Assuming you have access to her Facebook account, check her profile and activity log for any ring posts she’s liked or shared.

What’s the Buzz?

Even if she’s been careful not to leave a digital trail, she may have confided in her best friend or sibling. Once you’ve got a sparkly bee in your bonnet, it’s almost impossible to keep it to yourself! Listen for subtle hints that might come up when she’s chatting with her inner circle, especially if the topic of celebrity engagement rings comes up.

Finding Her Engagement Ring Style: How She Rolls

finding her engagement ring style how she rolls

When finding her engagement ring style, it often helps to draw on your own personal experience. Presumably, you’ve spent a fair bit of time with your SO and have gleaned an insight or two about her day-to-day.

What kind of lifestyle does she lead? If she has a job or hobby that requires her to wear gloves, she’d be better off with a setting that doesn’t have exposed diamonds on the band. Solitaire and channel-set rings are both practical options as they minimize the risk of the diamonds getting caught or falling out. A less hands-on lifestyle would allow for more exposed diamonds on the band – pavé being the obvious example.

If your girl is more Devil Wears Prada than Devil Wears Nada, you might consider a more daring setting. Pay close attention to her wardrobe. If she dresses to impress and won’t touch anything unless it’s by a top designer, go for something with character, such as a vintage engagement ring or hyper-modern tension ring.

If none of the above tips speak to you, no one would fault you for playing it safe and going with a classic style such as a solitaire. This is essentially a single center diamond mounted on a plain setting. Solitaires are considered classics for a reason: they work with practically any individual style and never go out of fashion.

Once you’ve figured out your setting style, it’s time to consider the diamond shape. If you have even the slightest doubt about what shape to get, you can’t go wrong with a round cut. Round-cut diamonds are by far the most popular shape for engagement rings, owing to their perfect geometry and abundant sparkle. These timeless classics are tried and true, but if it’s a little more edge you’re after, a princess or cushion-cut diamond should suffice.

These rings feature at least two smaller diamonds or gemstones flanking the center stone.

Side stones can be any cut or gem – some match the center stone while others are contrasting shapes. Side gemstones, like those in blue sapphire engagement rings, accentuate the center diamond with a vivid splash of color. Side-stone and three-stone engagement rings look even more radiant thanks to their complementing gems.
