How To Measure Your Ring Size

How To Measure Your Ring Size

Whether you’re searching for the perfect fit for your dream engagement ring or surprising your fiance’ to be, our ring size guide will point you in the right direction. Let’s see how you measure up.

How To Measure Your Ring Size

Wedding and engagement rings have long been a symbol of love and devotion. The circular ring has neither a start nor a finish, which is emblematic of an everlasting union. With such rich meaning and symbolism, designed to last a lifetime—so it makes sense that the ring size needs to be spot on.

If you’re not sure how to measure ring size, you’re in the right place.

How To Measure Ring Size At Home?

You may be asking yourself, how is this even possible? It’s true, James Allen can help you figure out your ring size all from the comfort of your own home. Take a look at our free online ring sizer

Alternatively, you can simply request a free ring sizer that will be delivered to your home.

Nervous that you’ve ordered the incorrect ring size? Don’t fret! We will resize your ring once, for free up to 1 year after the purchase.

Different Ring Size Conversions

While you may wear one size in the U.K., your sizing in the states may be completely different. Thankfully, though, conversion charts are available to ensure you order the right size regardless of which country the ring was sized in, which ensures complete accuracy.

Ring sizes in the United States and Canada range from 3 to 13, which includes half and quarter sizes. A ring’s size is determined by its diameter or circumference and is measured in inches or millimeters. The diameter measures the inside length of the ring, whereas the circumference measures the length of the entire band.

International ring sizing involves the same measurement process, but the numbered sizes run on different scales, which vary by country. Australia and the United Kingdom actually use an alphabetical letter sizing system.

How To Measure Ring Size With A Tape Measure

Using a measuring tape is considered to be the best and most accurate method to determine your ring size. Give yourself enough space to accommodate your knuckles for the best results. Also, you should measure the finger where you plan to wear the ring, since the finger size on your left and right hands may differ.

STEP 1:

Place the measuring tape over your finger and pull it around into a circle.

STEP 2:

You should adjust the size of the circle, move it over your knuckles, and make sure it fits comfortably.

STEP 3:

Take note of the measurements in millimeters and use the comparison chart if needed.

How To Measure Ring Size With A String

This next method is simple and works well for those who don’t have a ring nearby. All you need to do is take some string or ribbon and wrap it comfortably around your ring finger.

Once the piece of string is around your finger, carefully mark the spot where the string overlaps. For an accurate result, try to make the smallest mark possible. Then, take the string and measure it against a ruler or measuring tape. Enter your measurements here in either millimeters or inches. We’ll do the calculations for you and, voila, you now have your ring size.

More Ring Sizing Tips

  1. Measure your finger in the evening – For best results, measure your finger at the end of the day. In the morning, your fingers are colder and therefore smaller than usual.
  2. Measure a few times – Be sure to measure your finger size a few times to make sure your calculations are accurate.
  3. Use non-stretchable material – If you’re measuring your finger on your own, you want an accurate measurement! Good materials: ribbon, twine, even paper.
  4. Measure your finger close to your knuckle – This is where the ring will usually sit, so you want it to be comfortable.
  5. Measure your finger in the middle of the day – Our fingers tend to swell overnight, so it is recommended not to take your measurement in the morning as you wake up.
  6. It’s also recommended to not measure your finger, When the weather is either too hot or cold, after an intense workout or if you are sick.

Tips for Buying a Ring as a Surprise:

  1. Ask people If you don’t know your partner’s ring size, ask their close friends or family members to assist. Tell them to keep it hush-hush so that they don’t accidentally ruin the surprise!
  2. Borrow a ring that fits Borrow their ring (from the correct finger!) and use James Allen’s virtual ring sizer to determine the ring’s size.
  3. Shop for the ring on a private device And log out of all your shared accounts! You don’t want your partner running across your cookie trail.

Other Ways To Find The Ring Size

Taking an existing ring to a jeweler

Even though you won’t be shopping for a ring in the store, this is still one of the most professional ways to find your ideal ring size. Head over to your local jewelry store and have the jeweler measure your ring size. In addition to their nifty gadget, consider trying on a few of their engagement or wedding rings to ensure comfort and a perfect fit.

What Is The Average Ring Size For Men?

The average size of a men’s wedding band is 9. For men with bigger hands and long fingers, a wider ring band is recommended. While men with smaller hands or shorter fingers, a wider band may not be the best choice. Then again, this also depends on your personal style and how much of a statement you want to make.

What Is The Average Ring Size For Women?

According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the average ring size for a woman is a size 6. However, they also add that depending on their lifestyle, on average most women tend to fluctuate in weight, so adding a quarter size to the ring is often recommended. Fingers also tend to swell during seasons such as summer, so keep that in mind as well when measuring your ring size.

James Allen Ring Sizer Tools

You don’t have to worry about sizing a ring. James Allen’s Virtual Ring Sizer can help you determine your ring size online for free. There are two options available, you can either measure your finger, or you can measure a ring you already own to discover your ring size. Both are accurate and will give you your exact ring size.

What Happens When My Ring Is Resized?

During the resize process, small amounts of metal will be added or removed to increase or decrease the size as needed. As a result, your ring may be slightly thicker or thinner when completed. This is a minor difference and is often invisible to the naked eye.

Your resized ring will be inspected by quality assurance to ensure that our high standards are met and that your ring has been fitted to the size that you need.

What If I Order The Wrong Ring Size?

It’s worth noting that approximately 40% of rings end up being resized. But don’t worry, as we know that this is something that can happen when you’re buying a ring online, we offer free ring sizing for up to 1 year after purchase

Rings That Can’t Be Resized

Unfortunately, some rings are not able to be resized. This may be because of the specific design or material that has been used. Rings made from unconventional materials such as resin, ceramic, jade, or wood cannot be resized because there’s no way to cut and bend the ring- its composition isn’t amenable to the process,

These include:

FAQs

  1. How will I know if I have the right size?

A good ring size should fit snug around the base of your finger without bulging or leaving any indentations. However, the ring should also be loose enough to slide over your knuckle. Check if your ring fits right by pushing it up from underneath and making sure there is a small space between it and your finger. This means there is enough room.

  1. Does band thickness affect size?

Yes, band thickness can affect your ring size. The more a ring covers your finger, the tighter it will fit. In addition, stacking many types of bands, such as a wedding ring set, will increase your ring size. We recommend measuring your ring size with a sizer that’s close to the thickness of the ring that you’ll be wearing.

  1. How to secretly find someone’s ring size?

Planning a surprise romantic and creative proposal? You can easily find out your partner’s ring size without them knowing. One of the easiest options is to simply ask their family or friends. Another way to measure your partner’s ring size secretly is by measuring a ring they already wear.

  1. Are men’s and women’s rings measured using the same scale?

Yes, women’s and men’s ring sizes are measured on the same scale. The average size of men’s hands tends to be larger than that of women’s, so they will fall into the larger category.

How To Wear A Wedding Ring Set

In the world of how to wear wedding rings and engagement rings, there are no hard-and-fast rules. Even the most “universal” traditions, as you’ll soon see, are subject to variations. It all depends on the ring wearer’s particular culture and style.

So what should YOU do? Read on to find out.

How To Wear A Wedding Ring Set

Now that you’ve started thinking about the perfect way to stack on your bands, you might be wondering how exactly to wear engagement and wedding rings together. It’s easy to feel confused about wedding rings or bridal sets, but the truth is there are no rules that you need to follow. There is no right or wrong way, it’s all completely up to you!

It is impossible to define a ‘traditional’ manner of wearing a wedding ring set, but there are a variety of popular ways of wearing them. And yes some do follow various traditions. Still unsure? We’re here to help. Keep scrolling to learn everything you need to know about how to wear a wedding ring set.

What’s The Right Way To Wear A Wedding Ring?

When it comes to the “right way” to wear a wedding ring, there are in fact a few options. However, it’s important to keep in mind that it generally comes down to comfort and your personal style.

Although, in many western cultures, the wedding ring finger is traditionally said to be the fourth finger on the left hand. But, the “ring finger” is not the same in all cultures and countries. It also may depend on local tradition, religion, and personal preference.

What’s The Difference Between A Wedding Ring And An Engagement Ring?

First, let’s talk about the rings. Though there are a few key differences between a wedding ring and an engagement ring, one of the main features that sets these two rings apart is when they’re given. An engagement ring is typically given during the proposal, while wedding rings are exchanged during the marriage ceremony between both partners.

And while an engagement ring typically features a prominent center stone, a wedding ring does not have a particular focal point. They sometimes feature either rows of smaller stones or simply a clean solitaire band.

The Best Wedding Ring Styles

Experts recommend that you don’t just buy a wedding ring simply because it’s currently trendy. These are rings you’ll be wearing every day for the rest of your life, so it’s important that the design and style reflect your personality.
Say ‘I do’ and begin your forever with a distinctively beautiful James Allen wedding ring. Choose from our large selection of gorgeous ring styles, including classic wedding rings, diamond wedding rings, and eternity rings.

Classic Wedding Rings

Classic wedding rings complement any engagement ring. The simplicity of a classic metal band directs all the attention to your engagement ring. So if you’re struggling to find a matching wedding ring or simply want to highlight your engagement ring, then a classic wedding ring could be the perfect style for you.

Curved Wedding Rings

If your engagement ring has a distinct shape, your wedding ring can curve to accommodate your center stone. This gives your wedding set a unique interlocking quality. As an added bonus, a curved wedding ring’s complimentary shape reduces friction on your skin by preventing unnecessary slippage.

Eternity Rings

In some cultures, it’s a custom to wear circular eternity rings. In this case, eternity rings are considered to symbolize eternal love. A meaningful expression between a couple on their journey of everlasting love – a promise of lifelong commitment. Even though traditionally, eternity rings are gifted to mark a special milestone within a relationship, nowadays, they are often worn as wedding rings as they pair so beautifully with many different engagement ring designs.

Which Hand Should You Wear Your Engagement & Wedding Ring On?

Your wedding ring set can be worn on either hand, and there is no right or wrong way to do it. It differs worldwide and is often not the same in all countries and cultures. But, there are at least 3 common ways to wear a wedding set.

On The Right Hand

How a person wears their engagement and wedding band may determine the area you are living in or the cultural traditions you are accustomed to.

In certain Northern and Eastern European countries, it is customary to wear these rings on the right hand. This tradition actually comes from an ancient Roman belief that the left hand was untrustworthy. As a matter of fact, the Latin word for “left hand” shares the same root as the modern-day word “sinister.”

On The Left Hand

The most common choice for most people is to wear their engagement and wedding rings on their left hands. The tradition of wearing a wedding ring, specifically on the fourth finger originated from the belief that this finger has a vein running directly to the heart. As this idea has been passed down for many generations, people still enjoy the symbolism of wearing their wedding ring closest to their heart, showing how important marriage is.

In addition, many people prefer to wear both the engagement ring and wedding ring together on the same finger (on the left hand). Generally, the wedding ring is placed on the finger first so that it is positioned with the engagement ring following on the outside. For this reason, there are numerous, gorgeous wedding ring and bridal sets that are specifically designed to match each other. And, many couples choose this option when they plan their engagement and wedding rings.

However, another option that some people choose is to wear their wedding ring on top of their engagement ring to keep it secure on the finger.

On Different Hands

The engagement ring and wedding ring don’t necessarily have to be worn on the same hand. Some women opt to wear their wedding ring on the left ring finger and their engagement ring on the right ring finger. Whether you choose to uphold a time-old tradition or create your very own is entirely up to you.

How Do I Match A Wedding Ring To An Engagement Ring?

The answer: however you’d like. As the bride-to-be, you can choose to express yourself in whatever way you wish. There are few, if any, customs regarding how you pair your wedding ring with your engagement ring. So what does this mean for you? Ultimately, you have three main elements to mix and match: metal, stones, and style.

Match By Metals

As we’ve mentioned before, there are truly no wrong answers when it comes to engagement rings and wedding bands. While you may prefer to have a perfectly matching set of rings, others might prefer a mix of metals. All ring metals look great together, as long you love what you’re wearing! At JamesAllen.com, we provide you with four beautiful metal options, yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, and platinum.

Match By Stones

Diamonds are definitely marriage material, but so are gemstones. Gemstones are a gorgeous alternative for those who prefer a twist on the classic wedding ring. Don’t be shy to choose a wedding ring with the right stones to make you smile.
The beauty of gemstone wedding rings is that there is a huge selection!

From sapphires and rubies to opal and emeralds…these can make the most perfect, personalized piece. Whether you choose a particular stone for its beauty, or you want to embrace a certain stone’s meaning, the options are endless! For instance, you may wish to have a unique wedding ring set that features a respective birthstone.

Match By Ring Setting Style

Finding the perfect wedding ring set can be tricky as there are a diverse range of styles to choose from.

Of course, style often comes down to personal taste and preference. But luckily at James Allen, you can perfectly match your wedding ring to your engagement ring or go with something completely unique. The beautiful settings options are truly plentiful, and range in style and design, from stunning pavé wedding rings to rose gold stackable rings – you’re guaranteed to find the one.

What Should You Do If You Can’t Wear Your Wedding Ring The Traditional Way?

Remember that tradition is purely just a suggestion.

  • If you can’t wear your wedding ring on the “right” finger, wear it on another one!
  • If you are unable to wear it on your hand, slip it onto a chain and wear it as a pendant necklace.
  • If your wedding ring doesn’t fit with your engagement ring, wear them on separate fingers.
  • If you don’t like rings, bracelets can be excellent substitutes.

What matters most is that it’s your wedding, your marriage, and your ring. Regardless of how you choose to wear it, it’s completely up to you!

Final Thoughts

Your wedding ring set is more than a beautiful set of jewelry. It’s also a symbol of your love, devotion, and bond as a couple. And just as your love is unique, the way you want to wear your wedding ring set is just as special as well. We’ve given some guidance on different ways to wear a wedding ring set, but feel free to wear them how you wish.

Cobalt Chrome? 6mm Comfort-Fit High Polished Design Ring

A Brief History

While wedding rings, in general, have been around for many decades, it is believed that the earliest men’s wedding ring was called “Gimmel Rings.” Additionally, engagement and wedding rings symbolized everlasting love and devotion during Ancient Egyptian times.

During World War II, many men who fought on the front line began wearing wedding rings as a keepsake or memory of their wives and families back home. The same custom was carried through WWII, which is why it is presumed that during the 20th century, men started wearing wedding rings as a symbol of their marital status. In recent years, we have seen a spike in popularity and focus on the groom. And today, we could not imagine a wedding ceremony without the classic ring exchange, right?

Men’s wedding rings are a tradition that is here to stay and is a beautiful token of the love and commitment that two people share.

Select A Metal Type

When deciding on a metal for your wedding ring, there is indeed a range of options. You may want to ask yourself a few questions before the big purchase as well. For instance, are you allergic to any materials? Do you and your partner want matching rings? What kind of lifestyle do you lead? What best suits your complexion? When making such an important purchase, you do not want to make a hasty decision.

Although yellow gold wedding rings are the most popular choice for men, there are other gold hues that are available too. Generally, men who are the conventional type tend to opt for the traditional gold ring. This classic metal gives off a warm, subtle glow, and is best suited for people with warm skin tones. Another great advantage of opting for yellow gold is that it does not tarnish easily. We stock both 14K and 18K yellow gold rings.

Another very popular metal is white gold. Rings made of white gold have a silvery radiance that makes their appearance classic and contemporary. This option is not only an affordable one but is lightweight and is also an easy-to-wear metal. These rings are also ideal for those who want to add delicate detailing or engraving to create the perfect unique men’s wedding band.

One of the less common choices amongst the metals is rose gold. However, this is a beautiful hue that is rising in popularity and becoming very trendy for both men and women. Rose gold wedding rings are the perfect choice for grooms wanting a more daring and distinctive look.

If these metals have not yet grabbed your attention and you much prefer a ring that is completely conventional. Then perhaps a platinum wedding ring is what you need. Now, you may be thinking that platinum is the same as white gold, but actually, this is not correct! Although the two are very similar, they have some differences too. Including the cost, appearance, and structure. Platinum is ideal for those who frequently work with their hands or are exposed to activities that result in friction against the ring surface. Considered to be the most durable metal, platinum is also one of the many hypoallergenic metals.

Choose A Style

Another benefit that comes with selecting a wedding ring is the variety of styles and designs that are available. We definitely understand that with all the choices available, the overall process of searching for the perfect “one” can become overwhelming. Here is a list of some of our most popular styles along with some details of each to make things a little more simple.

Diamond

Gone are the days when the groom had to settle for a plain yellow or white gold wedding ring, while the bride got all the glitz and glam. Thankfully JamesAllen.com stocks a wide selection of male wedding bands featuring diamond accents that are a great way to add that extra bit of personality to your ring.

Alternative

As we mentioned previously, most of the time when we think of men’s wedding rings, we tend to only think of metals such as yellow or white gold. However, by no means are these the only materials that can be used for wedding rings. In fact, more men are now stepping out and embracing elaborate and very swank looks.

Black wedding rings for men are all the rage right now and becoming increasingly popular due to their striking, masculine look. Of course, this is an excellent way to show your personality and break tradition.  Not only are they sleek and modern, but they also serve as a versatile piece of jewelry that can be worn for any occasion as a fashion ring – #ootd.

At JamesAllem.com we have a gorgeous collection of men’s alternative wedding rings created with metals that include, cobalt chrome™, titanium, black titanium, and ceramic. These rings are designed with every kind of man in mind, especially those who love some modern luxe.

Ring Finishes

A ring’s finish describes the surface texture of the metal. A large part of the appeal of wedding rings for men lies with the texture, or finish, of the metal. We believe that most wedding rings owe their handsome appearance in large part to the texture, or finish, of the metal. This is why our wedding rings are available in a variety of different finishes, including polished, satin, brushed, matte, and hammered. Take a look at the different finishes to see what you prefer.

Polished – this classic finish is considered a traditional choice and the most common, specifically for wedding rings. This describes a band that features a smooth, reflective finish.

Satin –  although a satin finish is also known to have a smooth surface, it is not reflective like a polished finish. A satin finish is generally more appealing to men who prefer a contemporary design.

14K Rose Gold 6mm Flat Satin Finish Comfort Fit Wedding Band

Hammered – this style gets its name from the tiny “dents” that are featured around the band that is created using a specialized jewelry hammer.

Brushed – similar to a satin finish, a brushed texture on a band resembles slight brush strokes. It has a similar soft shine to a matte finish. For men who lead active lifestyles,  a brushed finish is the best choice as it is able to hide scratches better than other finishes.

Keep Your Lifestyle In Mind

Once you’ve gone through all the different things you need to look at before purchasing a wedding ring, it’s also important to take into account the type of lifestyle you have.

As you or your partner will be wearing the ring every day, or at least we hope so, the ring you choose needs to perfectly match your Keep in mind how much time you spend with your hands throughout the day. You don’t need to be hesitant about wearing a wedding ring while working but. If for example, you are a construction worker, athlete, or even a nurse,

One of the biggest things to consider is how much you work with your hands during the day. For example, if you play sports or have a career as a mechanic or chef, a ring that is durable, scratch resistant, and has maximum comfort is crucial.

On the other hand, if his (or your) day-to-day life is less demanding on his hands, something more detailed and stylish is a perfect choice. But, always remember to also keep his personal style in mind.

A Guide To Wedding Rings For Same-Sex Couples

Your wedding ring is the ultimate reflection of the lifelong commitment you’ve made to your special someone. But can it be stylish and unique to your relationship? Of course! Join us as we explore classic and contemporary designs and concepts for same-sex couple wedding bands.

Gay engagement rings

Wedding Rings for Same-Sex Couples

So you’re finally heading down the aisle, but you need that special ring that says forever and looks great?

Wedding ring shopping is far less stressful than picking out an engagement ring. Why? Well, this is something you and your partner can do together, there are a ton of classic and non-traditional rings to pick from, and you can make it as sentimental as you want.

Picking a wedding ring has about as many rules for same-sex couples as it does for any other couple. The beauty of a wedding ring is that your chosen band will always remind you of your partner whenever you catch a glimpse of it. That’s why you can let your imaginations run wild and truly get a wedding ring that you love and that reflects your relationship.

From matching wedding bands to rings with diamond accents and carved patterns, let us inspire you with our top picks for wedding rings for same-sex partners.

To Match Or Not To Match

Matching wedding rings are a fun and sentimental choice for couples who want to be connected in a special way- like two halves of a whole. Wedding bands already carry such beautiful symbolism that getting matching bands only adds to your commitment and bond.

But there are many ways to match that aren’t a direct copy-paste. Here are some of our favorite matching wedding rings with a twist.

Traditional same-sex couple wedding bands

If you and your fiancé prefer the more traditional route, that is, plain precious metal bands, we recommend going for the classic yellow and white gold route or even platinum.

Classic wedding bands for men are usually a little thicker and also come in a variety of comfort-fit settings that can be domed, curved, or even flat.

14K Yellow Gold 5mm Slightly Domed Comfort Fit Wedding Ring

But certainly, take your lifestyle into account. Do you or your partner work intense jobs where your hands bump into things? Do you work out often and lift weights?

If so, it might be better to invest in a set of matching rings with a stronger, more alternative metal like cobalt chrome. This is a white metal that could easily pass for gold, but it’s highly durable and scratch-resistant.

Cobalt Chrome 6mm Comfort-Fit High Polished Design Ring

Traditional wedding rings for women are usually thinner gold metal bands that would typically look aesthetically pleasing with their engagement rings. However, in some cases with lesbian couples, both partners may have an engagement ring they’d like to match their wedding band too.

This could make matching the rings a little problematic unless you’ve both got the same engagement ring metal color and even ring setting style. Alternatively, you could get matching wedding bands and wear them on the opposite hand as your engagement rings

If only one of you has an engagement ring, things get a little easier when it comes to picking your matching rings.

14K White Gold 2.0mm Traditional Slightly Curved Wedding Ring

Non-traditional same-sex couple wedding bands

Tradition is not for everyone, especially when your personal style or even beliefs don’t coincide. Now, we always believe that any piece of jewelry you own should reflect your personality or the meaning you hold to it.

For men, carved wedding rings can add that hint of your personality with an element of modern style. These rings come in a variety of precious and alternative metals and popular two-toned options. Carved wedding rings for men aren’t just perfect for matching with your partner, but they’re also trendy and can elevate your look- from your wedding attire to your everyday outfits.

14K White And Yellow Gold Smooth Satin Finish Comfort-Fit Band

For our non-traditional ladies, we have a few stunning options up our sleeve. Maybe the best way to match without really matching is by picking the same metal color but having different designs?

Here, you both have some leeway to add elements of your personal style to your bands but still keep the foundation of your rings the same.

While most wedding band styles steer away from flashy diamond or gemstone accents, there really is no rule saying you can’t have them.

Eternity rings are another top choice as diamond wedding rings for same-sex couples. The romantic symbolism is undeniable and perfectly represents forever, with added sparkle!

Eternity and diamond stone rings can also be customized to fit your individual preferences. Let your partner know which diamond shape you prefer and what size suits you best. A dainty diamond band is perfect if it’ll sit alongside an engagement ring, alone, or stacked with your other favorite pieces. Thicker eternity rings are better as standalone pieces.

If you and your fiancé chose not to get engagement rings then an eternity or diamond ring is a stunning choice as a wedding ring that can still give you dazzling diamond brilliance.

Contemporary Wedding Rings For Same-Sex Couples

Is your or your partner’s style more out there and daring? If one or both of you want a truly unique wedding ring, opt for a patterned design.

What we love most about rings with imagery, uniquely placed accents, and metal shaping is that they will always feel like they were made just for you. They’re so different and often theme-specific that you will have a deep connection to your ring above and beyond its ceremonial meaning.

Each wedding anniversary has a different traditional and precious gemstone gift that also has a specific meaning associated with it, this depends on how many years you as a couple are celebrating. From glamorous gold earrings to iconic pearl jewelry, each piece is made with you in mind and designed to last a lifetime – just like your marriage.

1 Year Anniversary: Gold

The first year of marriage is most likely to be the sweetest, filled with many lovely moments. Gold is not exactly a gemstone but traditionally newly married couples exchange gold jewelry on the 1st year anniversary. This gorgeous metal is the perfect way for couples to begin the luxurious gift-giving tradition.

For a classic first anniversary gift, choose a piece of jewelry that is simple and contemporary – for both him or her. Another darling idea is to get modest, matching gold rings.

2 Year Anniversary: Garnet

The traditional beautiful gemstone for a second wedding anniversary is garnet. This gorgeous gemstone is said to represent love and devotion, while many also believe it is a symbol of protection. While garnet gemstones can be found in a range of many colors, such as green, purple and yellow. But the most popular hue is a vibrant, deep red, which is used in a range of jewelry pieces from earrings and necklaces to bracelets and rings.

From modern to vintage styles and designs, gifting a piece of garnet jewelry to your partner on your second anniversary is a great way of saying ‘I love you.’

Sapphire is one of the hardest and most durable gemstones that can withstand the test of time just like your marriage. With so many options for sapphire jewelry, this is the perfect way to celebrate your anniversary.

10 Year Anniversary: Diamonds

Men’s Wedding Ring Size Guide

Men’s Wedding Ring Size Guide

Looking to buy the perfect ring for yourself or that special man in your life, but unsure about their ring size? Men’s ring sizes can differ considerably, but don’t sweat, James Allen is here to provide you with a better understanding of all there is to know about men’s ring sizes as well as what the best wedding ring is to suit your lifestyle and personal taste. Let’s dive in and help you take the stress out of ring shopping.

Men’s Wedding Ring Size Guide

One of the most important factors to consider when shopping for men’s wedding rings is the ring size. For many men, a ring is sometimes the only piece of jewelry they choose to wear every day. So, ensuring the ring is correctly sized is not only essential for comfort but will also prevent you or your loved one from losing it. Did you know, that a ring that fits well exudes elegance and is also said to be part of ring etiquette for men?

Before we get started with finding the correct ring size and some of the different measuring techniques you can use, it’s good to know that figuring out a man’s ideal ring size is much easier than you may think.

Tantalum Satin Finished 6mm Domed Comfort Fit Ring

What is the Most Common Men’s Ring Size?

In the U.S.A, the most common men’s ring size is 9, which converts to approximately 19.8 millimeters in diameter. But of course, as all men’s fingers are not the same, their ring size can vary from a size 6 to 20. But the big question still remains, how do you know what size ring to order?

Did you know that men’s ring sizes and how they are measured actually differ from country to country? While a man may wear one size in the USA, his sizing may be completely different in New Zealand or the U.K. But fortunately, ring size conversion charts are available to assure that you order the correct size, regardless of where in the world you may live.

How to Determine A Man’s Ring Size?

Found the perfect ring? Now all you need to do is find the correct ring size! Luckily, it’s a lot easier than you think and there are numerous ways to help us figure out a man’s ring size before shopping for a ring at James Allen. Take a look at these amazing tricks to help you out.

  1. Get Measured At A Jewelry Store

Even though you won’t be shopping for a ring in the store, this is still one of the most professional ways to find your ideal ring size. Head over to your local jewelry store and have the jeweler measure your ring size. Besides their nifty gadget, ask if you can also try on some of their men’s engagement rings or men’s wedding rings to ensure both comfort and the most accurate ring size.

2. Grab Some String and A Ruler

This next method is simple and works well for those who don’t have a ring nearby. All you need to do is take some string or ribbon and wrap it comfortably around your ring finger or the finger that you are going to rock the ring on. It’s important not to measure a different finger as the ring may not fit properly.

Now, once the piece of string is around your chosen finger, carefully mark the spot where the string overlaps. For an accurate result, try to make the smallest mark possible. Then, take the string and measure it against a ruler or measuring tape. Enter your measurements here in either millimeters or inches. We’ll do the calculations for you and, voila, you now have your ring size.

3. Do It All Online

You may be asking yourself, how is this even possible? But it’s true, when purchasing a wedding ring and figuring out your ring size, James Allen can help you with it all and from the comfort of your own home. Take a look at our free online ring sizer

Alternatively, you can simply request a free ring sizer that will be delivered to your home.

Nervous that you’ve ordered the incorrect ring size? Don’t fret! We will resize your ring once, for free up to 1 year after the purchase. If you live in the United States, you can even get your ring resized locally at a location near you

Factors To Consider When Choosing A Ring

While a size 9 may be the most common ring size in the U.S., it’s vital to remember that no two hands are the same. In other words, we do not recommend taking a wild guess when it comes to the correct ring size – even if you want to surprise your loved one. With that being said, ‘size’ is just one important factor that affects the fit and appearance of a ring. You should also take into account how a ring looks on the hand and other style elements such as the shape, bandwidth, and metal type.

Metals

It’s good to note that certain metals and their colors may look better with specific skin complexions while for other men, this detail may just be a personal preference. Warm metals such as yellow gold or rose gold may look great on men with warmer undertones, while light metals like platinum or white gold may be a better option for men with cooler complexions.

So, keep this in mind when choosing the perfect ring for you or the man in your life. We stock men’s rings in yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, platinum, Tantalum, Cobalt and Titanium.

Ring Shape And Style

Men’s rings come in a variety of different shapes, from flat to domed to knife edge and even slightly curved.  Let’s face it, when it comes to wedding rings, men don’t always have an abundance of options. Even though the domed shape is the most classic shape and is often a popular choice for many men, luckily the days of boring and ‘traditional’ men’s engagement or wedding rings are over.

We totally understand that men want to show off their style too. This is why James Allen offers men’s rings that are perfect for the modern man who is searching for something less traditional and a lot more unique. Take a look at our range of contemporary black wedding rings that are trendy and very unique. In fact, black wedding rings for men come with many advantages such as;

  • Many of them are hypoallergenic
  • Some black metals resist scratches
  • Black wedding bands are typically more affordable
  • They are very fashionable at the moment

Width

By now we know that rings offer all sorts of various options, another important thing to think about is the width of a ring. Ask yourself, how wide do I want my ring to be? Here, experts recommend trying on a few men’s rings in a variety of different widths to help you decide what you like best.

The average width for a men’s wedding band is 6 mm, but different widths are available to complement both small and large hands. For men with bigger hands and long fingers, a wider ring band is recommended. While men with smaller hands or shorter fingers, a wider band may not be the best choice. Then again, this also depends on personal style and how much of a statement you want to make.

14K White Gold 7.5MM Hammer And Brushed Finish Band

Consider Your Lifestyle

As you or your partner will be wearing the ring every day, you need to make sure that the engagement ring or wedding ring you choose should completely fit your lifestyle. One of the biggest things to consider is how much you work with your hands during the day. For example, if you play sports or have a career as a mechanic or chef, you definitely need a ring that offers maximum comfort.

You would generally stay away from rings with diamonds or gemstones and possibly even consider a platinum ring as they tend to be more durable. In addition, the domed shape is perfect for men who work with their hands and may need to quickly remove their ring in the event of an emergency. Men’s Ring Size Measuring Tips

Experts recommend that before you measure your ring size, make sure you follow these tips. This will ensure the most accurate results and maximum comfort.

We Recommend You Don’t Measure Your Ring Size:

  • In the morning – our fingers tend to swell overnight, so it is better to measure your finger in the middle of the day.
  • After an intense workout
  • When the weather is either too hot or cold – as our hands tend to expand in the heat and shrink in the cold, it’s best to take your measurements at room temperature. Don’t start measuring straight after ice-skating or after a long day at the beach.
  • After a large fluid intake
  • After a long flight as the body tends to swell
  • If you are sick or have a fever.

In many Western cultures, the ring finger is traditionally the fourth finger on the left hand. However, the “ring finger” is not the same in all countries and cultures.

2. What Is The History And Meaning Behind The Ring Finger?

The idea and symbolism of a “ring finger” dates back to Ancient Rome. The Romans believed that this particular finger has a vein that directly runs to a person’s heart, called “Vena Amoris,” which means “vein of love.” Therefore, it is believed that a ring should be placed on this finger to signify the romance of a newly married couple as their two hearts would be connected.

Unfortunately, due to modern-day understanding of anatomy, it’s clear that all fingers have venous connections to the heart. Yet, for the most part, tradition still stands for many couples who designate the same finger to signify their commitment to each other.

3. Can I Wear A Ring On My Ring Finger If I’m Not Engaged Or Married?

There are no rules when it comes to this answer. You may have heard the old wives’ tale that says, wearing a ring on your “ring finger” when you are not married could bring you bad luck.

For women who are not superstitious, this may not bother them at all, while for others, this might be something they strongly believe in and avoid at all costs – of course until the right moment comes. The truth is, this is completely up to you!

4. Engagement Ring vs. Wedding Ring: What’s The Difference?

Nowadays, there is a lot of tradition mixed with modernism when it comes to engagement and wedding rings, yet each ring signifies a different milestone. An engagement ring is typically given at the time of the proposal or soon after the couple decides to get engaged.

While the wedding ring is traditionally given at the wedding ceremony. Most often a wedding band is a relatively simple design while an engagement ring tends to feature diamonds or gemstones, depending on the wearer’s individual style.

5. What Does A Wedding Ring Symbolize?

For many, a wedding ring simply represents a start of a new chapter. However, there is a lot more significance to a wedding ring than we may know. Firstly the shape of the ring – a circle universally symbolizes infinity and eternity.

Historically, the idea behind a wedding ring is that it has no beginning and no end. This brings us to the next symbolism, eternal love, and commitment.

6. What Is A Promise Ring And Which Finger Does It Go On?

Believe it or not, promise rings actually date back to Ancient Roman times too and are believed to be tokens of love that were exchanged between couples, and often were gifted with short love poems. Today, a promise ring is for the most part gifted in the same way, but the actual “promises” behind this ring can have different meanings for different people.

Commitment is the general idea here, but whether that commitment is to an upcoming engagement, abstinence until marriage, the idea of forever, or just the immediate future.

In terms of placement, no rules exist here but many people wear it on the left ring finger, as a placeholder for a future engagement ring, or on the right ring finger.

7. How To Wear A Wedding Ring?

Traditionally, and in most cultures, your engagement ring and wedding ring are worn together on the same finger, commonly known as the ring finger (on the left hand). Generally, the wedding ring is placed on the finger first so that it resides closest to your heart, with the engagement ring following on the outside.

As most people prefer to wear these two rings together, there are many wedding ring sets that are specifically designed to match each other. For many, this is a very popular choice when planning their engagement and wedding rings.

However, another option that some people choose is to wear their wedding ring on top of their engagement ring to keep it secure on the finger.

8. In What Order Should I Wear My Engagement And Wedding Ring?

Conventionally, couples wear the wedding band “closest to their heart,” meaning the wedding band is stacked below the engagement ring on the left ring finger. However, some people like to wear their wedding band on top of their engagement ring as a way to secure it on the finger.

9. How Much Do Wedding Rings Cost?

While there is no one size fits all answer, experts have found the average couple spends approximately $1,100 for a female wedding ring. While the average cost of a male wedding ring is $500. Of course, this also depends on the type of metal you choose as well as any other detailing such as diamonds, gemstones or even a black wedding ring.

10. When Did Men Start Wearing Wedding Rings?

Even though wedding rings have been a part of wedding traditions and etiquette, men only began to wear wedding rings during the middle of the 20th century. It is believed this was done so as it was a symbol of their marital status. Additionally, many men at the forefront of the wars chose to wear their wedding rings as a remembrance of their wives and families at home.

11. Can Men Wear Engagement Rings?

The answer is YES! Despite that in many cultures the vast majority of men do not receive or wear an engagement ring, today, there are many men who choose to do so. There have even been many popular celebs seen sporting dazzling engagement rings.

For the most part, men only choose to wear a wedding ring, however, some men want an engagement ring to show that they are in a committed relationship. And the good news is there are so many options.

In case you’re looking for some inspiration, did you know celebs like Ed Sheeran, Johnny Depp and  Michael Bublé have been seen sporting bold men’s engagement rings.

12. Which Finger Do Men Wear Their Wedding Rings On?

To put it simply, there is no difference between the fingers that men and women wear their wedding rings on. Most couples typically choose to wear their rings on the same finger and hand as their spouse. However, in the United States, and many other Western cultures men’s wedding rings are traditionally worn on the ring finger on the left hand.

13. Should We (As A Couple) Have Matching Wedding Rings?

The answer to this question completely depends on your preference (and of course your partner). For some couples, this is one of the most perfect ways to symbolize their love and show how they are coming together as one.

However, for other couples expressing individuality in a marriage is important so this might not be desirable or even practical. Your wedding ring is something that you will be wearing for the rest of your life so if you and your spouse decide to not have matching wedding rings…it’s totally OK! Don’t be afraid to be original!

14. What Is The Most Popular Metal For Wedding Rings?

Gold has traditionally been the most popular metal for wedding rings. Even though there are several different types of gold that can be used for both wedding and engagement rings, yellow gold engagement rings have been a long time classic for many people all over the world.

Nowadays, white gold has become a very popular choice for wedding rings and of course, the very trendy rose gold too.

How To Wear Stackable Rings

When is an engagement ring more than an engagement ring? When it’s part of a stackable wedding set! A wedding set can contain more than an engagement ring and a wedding ring – and we’ll show you how to create your custom wedding stack with stackable wedding rings!

Stackable rings

Here’s how to stack the deck in your favor: start with your engagement ring. Have a good look at its characteristics and choose a matching wedding ring. In many cases, this is where the complementary calculations stop. However, most people, over the course of their married lives, mark special occasions with meaningful rings. And these subsequent, stackable rings can become part of an incredible ring stack that will be all yours.

Engagement ring + wedding ring + …?

Which stackable wedding rings will make their way into your stack? You’ve got options.

Anniversary rings

What’s the most obvious continuation to a wedding stack? An anniversary stack! An anniversary ring can look however you’d like, but traditionally each diamond on an anniversary ring represents a year of married life. Have a look at our full anniversary ring gallery and see which setting you love best.

Graduation rings

Do you know what complements a shiny new diploma? A shiny new ring! It’s actually becoming quite popular to celebrate a graduation with an engagement-style ring: a metal band with a stunning center stone.

Marking the birth of a baby

You’ve brought an actual life into the world. Wow. You’re kind of a hero. New mothers deserve new sparkle, that’s what we always say. Choose your baby’s birthstone or a diamond representing the baby’s order: 1 diamond for your first child, 2 for your second, etc.

Birthday rings

30? 50? 77? Which birthday is particularly significant for you? Mark the occasion with a ring in your birthstone or your favorite metal!

Memorial rings

Keep the memory of a loved one present and close to your heart with a meaningful ring. It could be their birthstone or a particular pattern that reminds you of them.

Accomplishment rings

You’ve gotten a raise, you’ve beaten an illness, you’ve achieved a long-held personal goal. Celebrate yourself, or recognize a loved one who’s done something incredible that doesn’t deserve to go overlooked.

How do I stack my wedding set?

There are quite a few ways to wear a wedding set, and the same goes for the rings you stack onto it.

  • If you wear your wedding and engagement ring together, you can place your subsequent rings on either side of your stack.
  • If you wear your wedding and engagement rings on opposite hands, then you can add rings to either hand according to whatever looks best.

Of course, you can also add rings to fingers that aren’t sporting your two stunners, but then it wouldn’t be a ring stack, would it?

Open Ring Stacks

If you’ve got a ring with an elongated center stone like marquise, oval, or pear, then open stackable wedding rings are quite a fitting option. The end of your engagement ring stone will nestle smoothly into the gap of your open ring.

Split-Shank Marquise Diamond Engagement Ring

Single- and Double-Banded Rings

This is the blingy choice! Choose the single band as your wedding ring, and save the double for your next special occasion – or vice versa. No matter what, your wedding stack is going to pop.

Channel-Set Cushion-Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

Curved Wedding Rings

Curved stackable wedding rings look amazing with uniquely-shaped engagement rings. And you can keep adding curved wedding rings, either identical or in variations, to your stack throughout the years.

The Delicate Stack

Keep your stack simple and elegant with minimalist rings! This ensemble complements a less-ornate engagement ring like a solitaire or bezel-set ring.

Crown Basket Solitaire Engagement Ring

Yellow Gold and Diamond-Forward

Give your ring stack a sunny shine with these exceptional yellow gold rings. With unparalleled designs you won’t find anywhere else, these singular rings are deserving of a solid gold match.

Baguette-Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

A Bouquet of Rose Gold

Rose gold is both sturdy and gorgeous: the copper content that gives it its characteristic rosy shine also makes it pretty low-maintenance. Rose gold rings retain their shine. No tarnish, no way!

Pavé Emerald-Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

In Other Words…

You don’t have to start planning a wedding ring stack the moment the proposal’s over, but it’s good to keep it in mind. Most ring-wearers add rings to their stack to mark meaningful occasions: most commonly anniversaries, but also for a wide range of personal milestones. Whatever your ring signifies, you can stack it any which way you want. It can hug your wedding ring, your engagement ring, or even go in between if you’d like. Stack it as high as you’d like! Why stop at just three rings?

10 Unique Wedding Bands For The Modern Man

Everyone deserves to wear a piece of jewelry that is as unique as they are. For men, traditional yellow and white gold wedding bands are just the tip of the iceberg in men’s wedding jewelry trends. Join us as we explore statement styles of one-of-a-kind forever rings.

Men's wedding bands

Believe it or not, there are more to men’s wedding bands than the simple and popular classics. There are men’s wedding rings that come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. From a touch of extravagance with diamond rings to alternative metals with patterns and textures aplenty, skies are truly the limit on choices for men’s wedding bands today.

It’s all a matter of preference and taste. At James Allen, we value our customer’s individuality and unique styles. That’s why we’ve taken the time to highlight ten exquisite rings that are sure to stand out and show off the personality of their wearers. After all, a wedding ring is a symbol of two partners’ love and unity.

Picking a wedding ring for your future husband should take some time and thought. It’s not always easy to get it right, but the trick is to go with something that reflects your partner’s unique style and character. Read on while we unpack our top 10 most unique men’s wedding bands.

Textured Wedding Bands

Textured wedding rings offer dimensions to any band while gracefully hinting at the personality and interests of their wearers. These rings are perfect for men who work with their hands, enjoy outdoor activities, and like a rugged look to their most precious accessory.

Textured rings can be rough, with indented, grooved, and carved features circling the band. Unlike smooth and polished surfaces, these rings accentuate the idea that there’s a masculine edge to them without taking away from the true meaning behind a traditional wedding band.

These unique men’s wedding bands are on the rise and come in just about any gold and alternative metal. Their versatility makes it easy to get the metal of your choice and the style you prefer.

Two-Toned Wedding Bands

Men’s two-toned wedding rings come in a wide range of styles and materials. Combine two metals in a stripe or line around a thicker wedding band for a delicate touch or create more dimensions to a narrow band.

A two-toned wedding ring will perfectly reflect your love and your partner’s unique sense of style in one polished band. It’s the ideal choice if your groom’s personality is bold and he loves to stand out.

Diamond Wedding Bands

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but we know even the roughest and toughest gentlemen will oh and ah over the brilliance of a little sparkle.

Diamonds are resilient and can handle the obstacles of any man’s lifestyle while being the perfect representation of strength and eternal love. This unique men’s wedding band looks excellent as a thicker ring, and the diamonds simply add a touch of glamour for the groom.

Gemstone Wedding Bands

If diamonds aren’t your style but you’re still looking for something with a bit of sparkle, a hint of color may be just what the doctor ordered. Precious gemstones are rare and full of spirited meaning, like sapphires, for example. These stones have typically represented longevity and prosperity for centuries.

You don’t have to believe wholeheartedly in their symbolism to know that they make for stunning unique men’s wedding bands. The darker blues and blacks give the wedding ring a handsome and bolder look while hinting at a more luxurious style.

Alternatively, if you like the idea of darker-colored wedding bands but prefer to skip the extra shine, check out our collection of men’s black wedding rings.

Patterned Wedding Bands

Now for the fun men’s wedding rings. Patterned wedding bands can be the perfect choice for any groom who loves the idea of wearing a piece of jewelry that has indented symbols, pictures, or artful motifs. A personalized design is our equivalent to a custom-designed ring. It shows the heart of its wearer while giving them everything they’ve ever wanted in their wedding band.

Patterned rings are just as versatile as textured wedding bands and are not limited to a specific metal. You can get a patterned ring on a budget by opting for an alternative metal if you’re looking for something less traditional and a bit more flashy.

These unique men’s wedding bands can give that something extra while showing off the wearer’s personality through its art. We also find these rings to be a thoughtful, romantic gesture. Gifting your soon-to-be husband with a ring that speaks to his style, identity, and even his favorite interest shows just how much you care. There will be no question as to how much effort you’ve put into getting the perfect wedding band.

Most Asked Questions About Men’s Wedding Bands

Now that we have our unique men’s wedding bands out of the way let’s look at the semantics behind other important wedding ring questions.

Who Buys The Groom’s Wedding Band?

In today’s modern culture, it’s likely you, the groom’s partner, will buy his wedding ring. You can do this by yourself or with the help of your family. Alternatively, if you and your fiancé have a shared budget, then you can both decide how much to spend on your rings together.

How Much Should You Spend On The Wedding Band?

It all comes down to your budget and the groom’s expectations. It’s important first to work out what style band he would prefer. The more expensive metals like platinum and diamond rings can push you just past $2000. In comparison, you can get alternative metal bands starting at $100 and classic wedding rings starting at $270.

Do Men Also Wear Engagement Rings?

Traditionally the person who proposes to their partner would not wear an engagement ring. However, traditions are changing, and it has more to do now with what you as the couple want.

Men’s engagement rings are increasing in popularity, and so if it works for your budget and it’s something you’d both like, hop on the new trend!

Cleaning-Care-Tips-For-Different-Metals-cover

How To Clean Your Gold Jewelry

Fine jewelry, engagement rings, and wedding rings – what does it take to properly maintain your gold and platinum jewelry? We’ll give you the complete rundown on how to clean jewelry.

How To Clean Your Jewelry Metals

Every fine jewelry wearer should learn how to clean gold jewelry and platinum jewelry to perfection. Why? Three reasons: sparkle, sanitization, and safeguarding.

For sparkle: Your jewelry shines its brightest at its cleanest. Over time, thin layers of dust and oil accumulate and block light from reaching your jewelry’s surfaces. Without light, there’s no reflection, refraction, brilliance, or fire. So if you notice that your jewelry is looking a bit dull, your first thought should be to clean it.

For sanitization: jewelry is full of prongs and crevices that collect grime. This doesn’t just dull your jewelry’s shine; it also means your jewelry is constantly transferring germs between you and your surroundings. Think of regular cleaning like hand-washing for your jewelry; it keeps your jewelry sanitized and keeps you healthy. Particularly in the era of COVID-19, sanitization is critical.

For safeguarding: A dirty ring is a damaged ring. Particulate build-up can scratch and/or discolor your jewelry metal. On the other hand, cleaning your jewelry too often or too vigorously can also seriously damage your jewelry. Harsh cleaners on some metals can wear away plating, causing permanent discoloration.

How often should I clean my ring?

How often should you clean your jewelry? That depends on how thoroughly you want to clean it. Regular, gentle cleaning should be performed weekly, while more thorough cleansing should only occur occasionally so that the harsh chemicals don’t damage your jewelry.

Learn how to clean your jewelry like a pro

Light cleaning: every week

  1. Warm water + dish soap + soft toothbrush.
Make your own jewelry cleaner by filling a bowl with warm (not hot) water, and then adding a few drops of dish soap. Put your jewelry in the mixture and let it sit for 15 minutes. Afterwards, take your jewelry out of the bowl and scrub it clean with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse, dry with a soft towel, and lay out on a soft surface to dry.
  2. Polishing cloth.
In a pinch, a normal microfiber cloth will do. However, specialty jewelers’ cloths are the best, since they contain particular cleaning compounds formulated to both polish and remove small scratches in your jewelry.

Occasional cleaning: every 1-2 months

  1. Ammonia.
For a deep cleaning at home, create a strong jewelry cleaner by adding one part ammonia to six parts water. Let your jewelry sit in this mixture for no more than 1 minute. Remove, rinse under running water, dry with a soft cloth, and place on a towel to air dry completely.

Deep cleaning: 1-2 times per year

  1. Free jewelry cleaning with James Allen.
Either send your jewelry to James Allen for maintenance or take your jewelry to a local James Allen partner for a complimentary professional cleaning. Minor repairs are also free!
  2. Ultrasonic jewelry cleaning machine.
These are similar to the machines used by professional jewelers. Ultrasound waves loosen grime from even the smallest of niches, and it only takes about 5 minutes. If you want to give your jewelry a regular deep clean, it may be worth investing in one. However, ultrasound jewelry cleaning doesn’t sanitize your jewelry, so it’s worth following up an ultrasonic treatment with a simple dish soap + water cleaning. Note: ultrasonic waves can damage jewelry that contains tungsten or soft, porous gemstones like pearls.

What daily habits should I adopt to protect my jewelry?

To prevent tarnishing and scratching, it’s worth learning a few helpful jewelry habits. These actions are most important for protecting softer metals like yellow gold and plated metals like white gold, which can be most easily scratched or discolored.

  1. Store each piece of jewelry in its own cloth bag to prevent scratching.
  2. Keep a jeweler’s polishing cloth in your bag or backpack. That way, you can polish your jewelry on the go whenever you realize it’s looking a bit tarnished.
  3. Take your jewelry off when you’re sleeping. During sleep, your ring can catch on linens. Not only can this damage your fabric, it can also pull prongs out of place. Plus, the more your skin touches your jewelry, the quicker your natural oils accumulate and dull the sparkle of your metal and stones.
  4. Remove your jewelry during certain activities, including whenever you:
  5. Work with your hands
  6. Use caustic materials like household cleaners – or wear rubber gloves.
  7. Apply makeup or hairspray
  8. Exercise. This is especially true when you do upper body work that requires gripping, like lifting weights. However, cardiovascular activities like running may also deposit sweat on your jewelry which can tarnish it over time.
  9. Swim in chlorinated pools
  10. Paint your nails

How do I clean my yellow gold jewelry?

Most yellow gold jewelry is offered in two different karats of metals: 14k and 18k. While 24k is pure gold, lower carats are actually mixed with other metals (like nickel, copper, and silver) in order to strengthen it to the point that it’s suitable for jewelry. If you’re wondering how to clean gold jewelry, you’re in luck: yellow gold is slow to tarnish and dull, and doesn’t require maintenance as frequently as other gold jewelry metals.

  1. Use: Dish soap + water, ammonia, or polishing cloth.
  2. Avoid: Bleach and tough scrubbing brushes

How do I clean my white gold jewelry?

White gold’s silvery luster is created by alloying yellow gold with white metals like nickel or zinc, and finishing with rhodium plating. Normal wear and tear will result in the need for rhodium re-plating every 5-10 years in order to maintain white gold’s silvery appearance. This rhodium plating can also be worn down by strong chemicals, so take off your white gold rings when cleaning.

  1. Use: dish soap + water or polishing cloth
  2. Avoid: harsh chemicals which can strip the rhodium plating.

How do I clean my rose gold jewelry?

Rose gold is a yellow gold/copper alloy. The gold gives it a malleability and sheen that’s perfect for jewelry, and the copper gives it its distinctive pink hue. It’s also the strongest of all the gold metals, so your rose gold jewelry can be worn more often, with less chance of scratching.

  1. Use: dish soap + water or polishing cloth
  2. Avoid: abrasive chemicals

How do I clean my platinum jewelry?

Platinum is a rare, valuable metal with a gorgeous silvery sheen that retains its white luster with minimal maintenance. It’s also the most durable of all the ring metals! In general, you’ll have to clean platinum jewelry less regularly than gold, and it will also scratch less.

  1. Use: dish soap + water or polishing cloth.
  2. Avoid: Ammonia

A Tidy Summary

No matter what metal your jewelry is made from, it’s important to maintain its sparkle via weekly cleanings with dish soap, warm water, and a soft-bristled toothbrush. For a squeaky-clean professional shine, either send your James Allen jewelry to us for a quick and complimentary deep cleaning or take it to one of our brick-and-mortar partner jewelers. Or spend a bit of money to DIY, and deep clean it with either an ammonia-water mixture or purchase an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.

Treating your jewelry right will help it look continuously brilliant throughout the years.

How to Stack Your Jewelry Like A Pro

Stacking jewelry is a small pleasure that is both fun and fashion-forward. Keep reading on to find out all the ways you can combine your favorite pieces to perfect the art of stacking your jewelry.

Stack Jewelry Like a Pro

We adore well-stacked and layered jewelry. It can take a bland outfit to a whole new level while appearing effortless. There’s no limit to what jewelry you can layer, from fine jewelry accessories to diamond trinkets.

Layering your jewelry in a way that leaves your look polished and perfect can be a little tricky. There are basic rules and tips you can follow to make sure your style isn’t screaming “overkill.” We’ve come up with a few trusted tips that you can always keep in mind before you get ready for a casual night out or an important event.

Whether you love layering necklaces or enjoy stacking rings, let us show you that more is definitely more when piling on sparkling accessories.

The Art Of Layering And Stacking Necklaces

When layering your necklaces, it’s important to remember that it can be done no matter what time of year it is. Layering necklaces and pendants can be just as gorgeous over a turtleneck sweater as they would on a bare neck in the glowing summer.

As you layer, keep your touch as delicate as possible. You don’t want to add one chunky necklace next to another and risk looking sloppy. If you love the more heavy neck accessories, then consider layering a chunky choker with bolder chains.

Pro tip: pearl necklaces make for a perfect classic chunky choker.

Pair this timeless pearl necklace with smaller chains and be the picture of grace and sophistication.

Triple Layer Pierced Diamond Specks Necklace

They say all good things come in threes: three layers of glittering perfection.

For a softer look, we recommend taking a few elegant pieces, like a diamond or gemstone pendant, and pairing it with a few thinly chained necklaces of varying lengths. Allow them to rest about an inch from each other to get a decorated look.

Pro tip: Feel free to mix and match different metal types when you’re layering your necklaces.

Kite Set Solitaire Diamond Pendant

14K White Gold Four Prong Basket Solitaire Diamond Pendant (0.25 CTW - H-I / SI1-SI2)

What we love about a diamond pendant is that it can be paired with just about anything.

Ring Stacking For Glamorous And Bold Ensembles

We have two tips and tricks for stacking rings. One for stacking gemstone and fine jewelry rings and the other for artfully stacking your engagement ring

Stacking rings can be one way to express your unique personality. Stacked rings can give off an elegant aesthetic or more of a contemporary vibe, depending on your outfit of choice.

Skies the limit when layering your rings, as texture and color mixing is always welcome! Play around with various shapes and lines to add horizontal and vertical dimensions to your style.

Pro tip: make sure to leave one or two fingers ring-free when stacking and layering your rings.

Evil Eye Diamond Ring

Try this beauty on for size and add all the texture and symbolism your ensemble is missing.

Open Infinity Diamond Ring

14K Rose Gold Petite Open Infinity Diamond Ring

This piece is beautiful on its own or worn with other stackables for a trendier look.

Stacking engagement rings with accented diamond rings is a trend we’ve seen celebrities like Hailey Bieber adopt in recent years.

Depending on your engagement ring’s setting and center stone, there are endless ways to pair it with your wedding band and anniversary rings. You could pair a solitaire engagement band with a thin-band pavé eternity ring or stack your fancy-shaped diamond with a geometrical ring that sits well against its shape.

Pro tip: stack your engagement ring with thin band rings, so you add to your sparkle without taking away its spotlight.

Deep V Diamond Ring

14K White Gold Deep V Diamond Ring

The perfect partner to sit flush against your marquise or pear-shaped engagement ring.

Contour Diamond Eternity Ring

14K Rose Gold Shared Prong Contour Diamond Eternity Ring (1 CTW H-I / SI1-SI2)

This sparkling eternity ring will make you shine from every angle.

Stacking Bracelets From Gemstones To Diamonds

Layering your brackets is simply the easiest way to stack jewelry, as you’ll have a lot more wiggle room for quantity and can mix up your favorite metals.

Try stacking smooth and clean-lined precious metal bracelets, either on both wrists or layered up one arm for a chic and polished look. This is lovely for your everyday work look or a semi-formal event.

If you’re feeling colorful and want to go wild with an array of textured and gemstone bracelets, then pick two main pieces you wish to highlight and dress them up with thick and thin bracelets and bangles.

Pro tip: Invest in easy-to-slip-on bracelets if you’re planning on wearing them often.

Perpetual Diamond And Emerald Tennis Bracelet

Your friends will be emerald green with envy over your exquisite bracelet.

Akoya Cultured Pearl Brilliance Bead Bangle Bracelet

14K Yellow Gold Akoya Cultured Pearl And Textured Brilliance Bead Bangle Bracelet (8.0-8.5mm)

We’ve said it, and we’ll continue to say it: you can never go wrong with pearls.

Diamond bracelets are always a swoon-worthy trinket most of us would gladly slip on without hesitation.

The best way to stack your more expensive tennis bracelets without downplaying their brilliance is to layer with petite bracelets like an open cuff bracelet with diamond accents or a minimalist bangle bracelet.

Pro tip: layer your bracelets with classic and modern pieces to achieve contemporary chic.

Diamond Tennis Bracelet

This tennis bracelet is ideal for everyday wear and designed for easygoing glamour.

Are You A “Normal” Ring Shopper?

Want to know how you compare to other ring shoppers? We can tell you thanks to this survey collaboration with SWNS.

A picture of an engaged couple. The woman has her arms wrapped around his neck and is showing off her diamond ring.

When do I know I’m ready to get married?

Half of Americans in a relationship knew they wanted to marry their partner the moment they met. In fact, that statistic holds up across genders! 46% of women and 47% of men immediately knew that their partner was the one.

What about those who are skeptical of marriage? A third of respondents say that their current partner made them want to get married – that’s a quarter of women and half of men.

What does this mean for you? Well, there doesn’t seem to be much of a correlation between how long a couple dates and the strength of their marriage. Whatever feels right is right for you. It doesn’t particularly matter whether it takes months or years for you two to arrive at the altar. Your journey is your own, but the destination is the same for each married couple.

A statistic answering the question: "When do I know I’m ready to get married?"

After the wedding, should I wear my wedding ring, my engagement ring, or both?

If you’re asking yourself, “How should I wear my wedding ring set?” then we’ve got news for you: there are no absolute rules regarding how to wear your rings! After the wedding, most Americans wear their wedding ring closest to their knuckle, paired with their engagement ring just over it.

Other ring options:

  • Wear your full wedding set, but swap the order: the engagement ring closest to the knuckle, with the wedding ring further down on your finger.
  • Wear only your wedding ring

If you like your wedding ring best, or if your engagement ring tends to get in the way in your day-to-day life, then you may want to wear your wedding ring exclusively.

  • Wear only your engagement ring

Do you like your engagement ring more than your wedding band? Then leave your wedding band at home! You’re still celebrating your relationship, just with more emphasis on your sparkling center stone.

  • Wear your wedding ring and engagement ring on different hands

This can be a great choice for those whose wedding ring and engagement ring don’t sit flush. Or, on the other hand, your local tradition may dictate this. In Spain, for instance, the engagement ring usually goes on the left hand, while the wedding ring usually goes on the right.

  • Wear your wedding ring and engagement ring on different fingers

Other than for style reasons, this choice is common for those whose fingers have changed size, particularly post-pregnancy. If this strikes a chord, remember that James Allen offers free ring resizing either via mail or in select Jared jewelry stores.

  • Wear your wedding ring and engagement ring on the right hand

In some cultures, right > left. In fact, Catholic and eastern European tradition dictates that the wedding and engagement ring both be worn on the right hand.

All in all, only about half of respondents constantly wear their wedding rings and engagement rings together. The other half either wear only one ring or forgo wearing rings altogether.

The bottom line: you do you, boo.

How long should I save up for an engagement ring?

This is totally up to you. A quarter of Americans say they don’t believe there’s a set amount of time, while 65% of Americans believe you should save up for a year at maximum.

However, there’s no majority consensus. How do people determine how much a ring should cost?

  • You can set your ring budget by the amount of money you can save in a certain number of months
  • You can determine a budget independent of time constraints
  • You can find your dream ring and save up until you have enough to purchase it

The time necessary to save up money is heavily dependent on both your budget and the price of your desired ring. And if your budget is inflexible, here are some options for lowering the overall cost of your ring!

Important: James Allen offers special financing options if you can’t fully afford your ring right now, but still want to get engaged ASAP!

How much should my engagement ring cost?

Just 15% of Americans believe an engagement ring should cost over $5,000. Why is this important? It means you shouldn’t feel pressured to buy an expensive ring.

If you want to splurge on an impressive ring, go for it! You can always add more diamonds to the basket and shank, upgrade to a more pricey diamond, or choose platinum as your ring metal.

On the other hand, you should know that smaller budgets are extremely common. Additionally, many people’s dream rings fall well within their ring budgets!

If you’re operating within a smaller budget, have a look at our favorite affordable engagement rings. You and your wallet will fall in love!

Is it important to buy an expensive engagement ring?

71% of Americans don’t really care about the cost of the engagement ring.

What seems to be most important is that the ring suits the recipient. If your dream ring is priced higher than your current budget allows, there are plenty of ways to adjust your ring’s cost without compromising on appearance.

Ways to reduce the cost of your engagement ring:

  1. Choose a lab created diamond, which can cost up to 50% less than a traditional earth-created diamond.
  2. Go for slightly under full carats. For instance, the price difference between a .95 carat diamond and a 1.00 carat diamond is significant, but the size difference is not noticeable to the naked eye.
  3. Choose an elongated diamond shape, which appears large for its carat weight.
  4. Want a white jewelry metal? Go for white gold rather than platinum.
  5. Compromise on color. The less colorless a diamond is, the more affordable it is. Save money on a diamond with a slightly yellow tint, then pair it with a yellow or rose gold setting. The warm jewelry metal will mask the diamond’s color and no one can tell the difference!
A statistic answering the question, "Is it important to buy an expensive engagement ring?"

Should we share the cost of an engagement ring?

4 out of 10 couples share the cost of their engagement ring. An engagement ring is a big purchase! Not only can sharing the cost be a practical decision (and perhaps one that would allow for a more expensive ring), but taking this important journey together can bring a couple closer to one another.

Whether or not you share the cost of an engagement ring, here’s why we recommend designing your ring together.

A statistic answering the question, "Should we share the cost of an engagement ring?"

Should I get a custom engagement ring or a pre-set engagement ring?

36% of ring shoppers prefer a customized engagement ring, while 26% would rather go with a pre-set ring.

Any of James Allen’s rings can be customized with your unique gemstone and jewelry metal. For additional customization with unique baskets, halos, and shanks, visit the Ring Studio.

A statistic answering the question, "Should I get a custom engagement ring or a pre-set engagement ring?"

What’s the perfect proposal?

Ring in the champagne glass? “Will You Marry Me?” written in the sky? An impromptu proposal at home?

71% of Americans prefer a traditional proposal, in which a partner gets down on one knee and pops the question. It’s traditional, but there are a thousand and one ways to do it! Customize your proposal to your hearts’ content.

Which proposal will suit the two of you?

  • Just the two of you vs. alongside friends and family
  • A destination proposal vs. a proposal at home
  • Simple vs. extravagant
  • Impromptu vs. planned

Men’s Wedding Rings For Different Lifestyles

We’ve taken the time to break down all major considerations to help you find the perfect men’s wedding band to symbolize forever.

A man with white All Stars, rolling up his pant leg while showing off his wedding band.

We know how important it is to find a wedding ring that fits your unique lifestyle. There are men’s wedding bands that cater to just about any lifestyle and hobby we can think of. From classic yellow gold to stylish black wedding rings, dynamic metal options make it easier to enjoy your favorite activities without stress.

Whether you’re the kind of man who enjoys leisure or one who spends his time doing extreme sports, there is a metal and style that is the ideal fit for you. We’ve even considered that you might be both these men in one fun package – there’s a ring for that, too.

Take all your possible questions and worries, and allow us to confidently help you find the perfect wedding ring that will sit on your finger the day you say “I do.” Scroll down to see our six important factors to consider when buying the wedding ring your soon-to-be spouse will melt over. And if your partner is sitting right beside you now, remember they know best.

Make Yourself Comfy

Having a comfortable men’s wedding band is essential for any man who might be wearing this type of jewelry for the first time. A softer metal like white or yellow gold is the best option here. Men working with their hands or those in an office space will benefit most from this metal while looking great at the same time. Gold rings may need some minor buffing and polishing in the long term, but they’re a popular classic for a reason.

Both these metals are valuable and less expensive than platinum. White gold is slightly stronger with a cooler undertone, while yellow gold is more malleable and warm. One of the most comforting attributes of these metals is that they suit just about anyone and leave no room for insecurities or fuss.

Slightly Flattened Comfort Fit Wedding Ring

Classy and elegant: two features that’ll never lead you wrong.

When we talk about comfortability, we’re also going beyond metal and venturing towards ring style. Familiarize yourself with the term “comfort-fit.” This term is generally used to describe a ring that has a domed interior. This style is perfect if you want to avoid irritants to your skin and uncomfortable cuts to your finger.

Titanium is also a softer metal that offers its wearer more comfort and is a lighter weight than steel. It’s perfect for family men who want a durable yet comfy metal that can survive everyday wear.

Durable For Your Lifestyle

Active lifestyles can mean anything from regular sports to high-intensity construction jobs. Investing in a ring with high durability is the only way to save yourself the grief and frustration of having to fix scratches or breaks on your wedding ring

Platinum is the first metal that comes to mind when we talk about durability. It’s rare and dense, making it suitable for rougher lifestyles. A bonus to look forward to when investing in this metal is the fact that it will likely last a lifetime while maintaining its beauty. Take it from us, this metal is perfect for men’s wedding bands and a smart buy as a future family heirloom.

Next, let’s dive into cobalt chrome™. This metal will maintain its original condition even under the most intense wear and tear. It’s lighter than platinum, making it easier to wear, and it comes in various styles.

Scratch Resistant Rings

No one enjoys seeing scratches on their property. Not on our phones, cars, and certainly not on our wedding bands. The issue is, no matter what we do, scratches appear out of nowhere regardless of what protective measures we take. This is especially true if you’re a man who enjoys the outdoors or works in an industry where bumping his ring is a given.

Fret not, we have a solution to your problem. Tungsten is, without a doubt, the most scratch-resistant metal that exists. Incredibly, the only material out there that would be able to scratch your wedding ring is a diamond. It’s a tough metal making it impossible to bend out of shape and, unfortunately, impossible to resize.

Another favorite is the metal tantalum. It’s an excellent choice for men’s engagement rings as it’s highly durable against scratching and breakage. It’s an oddly vibrant futuristic metal and is virtually indestructible. Like tungsten, this metal is perfect for men working in harsh conditions, especially fields with chemicals and heat.

Best Hypoallergenic Metals

Being active may cause your hands to sweat and develop ring rash but there are some metals that can prevent this extremely well. Keep this list of all the hypoallergenic metals in mind when you purchase your ring:

  • Tantalum and Cobalt Chrome™ (without nickel) are great for medical and chemical applications because it’s both hypoallergenic and bio-compatible.
  • Tungsten is also hypoallergenic and a great substitute for those allergic to yellow gold wedding bands.
  • Platinum is hypoallergenic and a perfect replacement for white gold men’s wedding bands because it has no traces of nickel.
  • Titanium is also safe to wear and anti-allergenic.
  • Platinum is 95% pure, making it the most hypoallergenic metal choice.
  • Ceramic contains no unwanted components in its composition.

Aesthetically Pleasing

Beauty is in the eye of the wedding band holder, and that’s why we can’t tell you which ring is the most handsome. We can, however, let you in on which of our rings frequently make the bestsellers list and those that have a little extra pizazz. After all, there’s no shame in wanting your ring to be an extension of your unique style and personality.

If you like being outside and active, it’s likely one of these metals will have a pattern that mirrors your hobby. If you prefer office life and are more easygoing, yellow and white gold, along with platinum are softer metals that can be engraved for a more personal and intimate touch.

Tantalum, Cobalt Chrome, Titanium, and Tungsten are high on the list of stylish wedding bands for men who want that extra appeal to their ring. While the classics are always timeless, these metals are making the rounds with their exciting designs and unique styles.
