What Is Yellow Gold?

Yellow gold, or simply gold, is a precious metal that occurs naturally and is best used as jewelry and other decorative objects. This soft metal, in its purest form, can bend easily and therefore be manipulated into our favorite accessories, from gold earrings to yellow gold wedding bands, when combined with harder metal alloys.

Fun fact: the first-ever engagement ring was made from yellow gold with a simple bezel set diamond center stone.

What Does A Diamond Color Grade Mean?

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) sets the benchmark for the diamond industry. The world’s oldest, largest, and most reputable institute of gemological research and learning is responsible for analyzing and certifying the color, cut, clarity, and carat weight (the 4Cs) of all diamonds. Learn more about the 4Cs here.

The GIA color scale goes from D to Z, categorized into five groups: colorless, near colorless, faint, very light, and light. As the letter or category goes, the yellow tint increases as well. The tint is basically indistinguishable to the untrained eye, especially in lower grades. However, these same differences greatly affect how a diamond’s quality is assessed and, of course, its price.

Generally, the tint becomes more noticeable as the color grading system gets lower.

A chart illustrating the 4Cs of diamond grading

Colorless Diamonds For Yellow Gold Rings

Color grades D-F are absolutely colorless, setting the colorless standard. When you hear diamonds being described as ice, it is likely a D, E, or F color diamond. They are simply spectacular, and they look stunning with any metal color ring setting.

Remember that the higher the color grade, the more expensive the diamond. That being said, if you have the budget for a colorless diamond, know that it will look perfect and shine with brilliance when set in your preferred yellow gold engagement ring.

Near Colorless Diamonds For Yellow Gold Rings

G, H, I, and J color diamonds make up the near-colorless range. Generally, one cannot tell these diamonds have this subtle warmth unless they are placed side by side with another diamond that is truly colorless.

When viewed and graded by an expert gemologist, a near colorless diamond might appear to have a very faint yellow tint.

Although these diamonds have a slight hint of color, they’re almost impossible to detect with the naked eye. Generally, near colorless diamonds are recommended to be set in lighter metals to avoid the color reflection from yellow or rose gold ring settings. However, we know plenty of ways around this!

If you’re leaning towards a diamond in the near-colorless range, fancy shapes such as emerald, marquise, Asscher, radiant, and cushion-shaped diamonds aren’t ideal for concealing color and usually tend to have a darker appeal. For this reason, it’s best to opt for a round or oval cut diamond to set with your yellow gold engagement ring.

Faint Diamonds For Yellow Gold Rings

It’s worth noting that color is not the only thing to consider when purchasing a diamond. The other 3Cs can also play a huge role in the way your chosen color grade presents on an engagement ring or piece of fine jewelry.

Nevertheless, diamonds in the faint color grade, K, L, and M, are considered to have a faint tint. So, in short, they do show a slight tint of color. But does that mean they aren’t suitable as the center or accent stones for your yellow gold engagement ring? Not at all.

If you have your heart set on a faint diamond, it’s best to choose a diamond shape that is able to conceal or even disguise the color. Luckily you have many options to choose from, from classics like the round brilliant or princess cut, to edgier shapes like emerald and Asscher.

Try to avoid shapes like cushion cuts or radiant cuts as the color will be more noticeable, especially in a yellow or rose gold ring setting.

Ring Settings and Diamond Color

Whether you’re customizing your dream engagement ring online or buying it in a store, there are plenty of different ring settings to choose from. But when it comes to yellow gold rings and diamond colors, not all gold settings are going to do your chosen diamond color justice.

The Best Ring Settings For A Colorless Diamond

For colorless diamonds, your choice of ring setting is virtually unrestricted. Whether you want your diamond to stand alone in a solitaire engagement ring or you want it surrounded by diamond accents in a pave setting, your center stone will steal the show every time!

The Best Ring Settings For A Near Colorless Diamond

Near colorless diamonds are a little trickier because of their almost light yellow tint. If you’d prefer settings with side stones or a pave setting, it’s best you don’t go below H color, with an exception for round, princess cut, emerald, or Asscher, in which case you can go as low as an I color diamond.

Halo settings are even more restrictive for near colorless diamonds in yellow gold, so don’t go below H color no matter the cut.

The Best Ring Setting For A Faint Color Diamond

The best settings for faint-colored diamonds are solitaire and bezel settings, where ideally, the center stone is the only diamond. In this sense, diamond side accents will have no effect on how the center stone is presented. Often side diamonds can make the yellow tint more obvious, but when the diamond stands alone, it’s harder to identify the color.

Diamond Prices for Different Color Grades

Buying a diamond is no easy decision. You have to consider your budget, your partner’s expectations and preferences, and where the best place to buy it is.

See the chart below for some price comparisons of loose earth-created diamonds at JamesAllen. It’s important to remember that the diamonds of similar color grade, cut, and carat weight will be more than 3 times more affordable when choosing the lab created counterparts.

We’ll compare diamonds of the highest color grade to the most popular near-colorless and faint-colored diamonds.

Prong Metal Color

When you’re choosing a setting, make sure you take note of the prongs that will hold your diamond center stone in place. It’s not always a given that your yellow gold ring settings will also have yellow gold prongs, some may have white gold prongs. If that is the case with your chosen ring, the white metal will make diamonds with low color grades look a little off.

Pro tip: For white gold prongs, it’s best to stick to an H or I color diamond. Your jeweler may be able to switch the prongs to yellow gold instead. If you’re customizing your ring online, you’ll have a wider variety of similar settings to choose from with yellow gold prong options.

FAQs

  1. Does yellow gold affect diamond color?

Yes, dark-colored metals like rose and yellow gold have the biggest effect on diamonds because the diamonds will reflect some of the metal’s color.

  1. What gems go with yellow gold?

Of course! Apart from colorless diamonds, gems that are blue, red, purple, pink, orange, and green pair surprisingly well with yellow gold. The more vivid the gem, the better it looks set in yellow gold jewelry.

  1. Do diamonds look better in rose or yellow gold?

Not all diamonds look better in warmer golds. K to Z color grade diamonds will be noticeably yellow and so expert gemologists and jewelers often recommend going with a yellow gold engagement ring setting to give your diamond ring a more vintage look.

  1. Is yellow gold outdated?

Yellow gold continues to be a fashion mainstay year after year. Yellow gold jewelry is essentially a timeless staple anyone should add to their jewelry box.

Solitaire engagement rings are also extremely versatile, which allows the wearer to pair them beautifully with a variety of other pieces such as gemstone jewelry or wedding rings.

Other elements such as metal color can give a solitaire ring a distinct look, tailor-made to the preference of each wearer. For example, rose gold solitaire engagement rings give off a blended vintage and modern appearance. While the rosey, warm hue looks striking against many skin tones.

The timeless elegance of solitaire rings also means they can accommodate various diamond shapes and sizes. Round diamonds are the traditional choice for solitaire engagement rings, but fancy shaped diamonds such as oval, pear, cushion, marquise, and emerald cut are some of the most popular options.

So, which one do you think you’ll pick?

What To Look For In A Solitaire Engagement Ring

Finding the perfect solitaire engagement ring isn’t just about finding something you love to stare at. But what exactly is the most important part of a solitaire engagement ring?

Here are a number of things to consider before making a big purchase.

As we mentioned before, the design is basic and all eyes are on the diamond, it is best to try to focus on making sure that the diamond is not only magnificent but is also of great quality. Experts highly recommend that the diamond you choose is certified and details the nitty-gritty of your diamond.

Another question on many customers’ minds is, “what is the best stone cut for this type of ring?”Due to the beauty of a solitaire ring, there is actually no optimal diamond cut, as its simplicity makes it suitable for practically any diamond shape.

Additionally, it’s good to note that solitaire rings can be customized with a variety of prong settings and designs. The most common include comfort fit, knife edge, classic split shank, bezel set, cathedral, and four and six-prong solitaire settings.

Pros and Cons of a Solitaire Setting

There are plenty of good things to say about solitaire engagement rings, which is one this ring setting is so popular. It will never feel trendy or out of style, and it’s easy to pass down. However, there are also just a few disadvantages to selecting a solitaire engagement ring.

Pros and Cons of a Solitaire Setting

Lab Created Diamond Solitaire Ring Price

If your goal is to shop for an affordable engagement ring, then a solitaire is definitely your best option.

But, if you’re looking for guaranteed affordability, you should definitely consider a lab created diamond. Lab created diamonds are 100% real diamonds, and just like earth created diamonds, they come with their own GIA certificate.

Lab grown diamonds have the exact same optical, physical, and chemical properties as their mined counterparts. The only significant difference is their origin. One comes from a natural and uncontrolled environment, while the other is physically created in a controlled laboratory. In fact, if you examined both types of diamonds under a professional jeweler’s loupe or on a molecular level, you would not see any differences.

There is a fast-growing trend in the diamond industry for buyers to purchase these diamonds. Why you may ask? Well, there are several reasons why lab created diamonds are so beneficial:

  • Environmentally friendly & ethically sourced
  • At 30% less than an earth created diamond of similar size, color, and clarity, there is greater affordability
  • Available in various diamond shapes and sizes
  • Known origin of every diamond
  • Greater purity and improved quality

This ring style offers several creative opportunities, which is perfect for those also looking to design their dream engagement ring. In fact, at JamesAllen.com, we allow you to jump into the designer’s seat and fully customize a truly unique engagement ring with The Ring Studio. You can choose from hundreds of different designs and a selection of beautiful lab created diamonds. By creating your own ring within your budget, you can create exactly what you want.

How Much Should You Spend On An Engagement Ring?

How Much Should You Spend On An Engagement Ring?

Getting the ring of your dreams may sometimes seem impossible, but we’re here to answer one very important question. How much should you really spend on an engagement ring? We’ve got all the tips and tricks to ensure you get the perfect ring for your buck!

Engagement Rings

Shopping for engagement rings can be stressful, time-consuming, and even a little confusing at times. We know the assumption is that an engagement ring will cost a pretty penny, but most people don’t know all the ways they can get their dream ring without breaking the bank.

We’ll discuss unrealistic engagement ring cost myths and share all the clever ways to avoid them and still get the best ring for your buck. From diamond hacks to where you should shop for your ring, our tips and tricks are sure to help you avoid unnecessary ring costs.

What’s the Average Cost Of An Engagement Ring?

Today, the average price of an engagement ring ranges between $2,500 to $5,000. However, plenty of people purchase rings that are both below and beyond that price.

As you plan to buy your engagement ring, it’s important to remember that there is no one size fits all way of doing things. Each person has their own income, ring budget, and, of course, ring preference.

Engagement Ring Cost Myths

Outdated myths about engagement ring shopping and societal expectations can lead you down an expensive path. Let’s take a look at some of those assumptions and how you can avoid them.

Spending Three Month’s Worth of Your Salary

Spending three months’ worth of your salary was a campaign started by De Beers in the 1930s. It was traditional until it wasn’t. It changed to two months’ salary as time passed, and then the diamond needed to cost one month’s salary. Slowly but surely, those ideas changed with time, and now there are no ironclad rules about what to spend on an engagement ring.

The Bigger the Better

The bigger, the better- we must politely disagree. While the idea of a big and brilliant diamond sounds incredible, there are so many other ways to maximize your diamond’s appearance without having to purchase a huge diamond.

For one, most jewelry retailers have a large selection of diamond shapes and ring settings. So how do you go bigger without breaking your budget?

Try out an elongated diamond center stone, like emerald, oval, marquise, or pear. These diamonds can give off the idea of being larger than other round or square diamonds of the same carat weight.

Or you could invest in a setting that adds more sparkle to your ring. Side stone, halo, and pavé settings can give you the extra diamond accents you want without having to invest in a bigger diamond.

As Brilliant and Colorless as Possible

Color grading for diamonds isn’t as tricky as it seems- especially when picking a center stone for your engagement ring.

As you can see on the chart below, near-colorless diamonds barely have any yellow tint and are often cheaper than colorless diamonds. The diamonds below are exactly the same except for the color grade. The slight tint of color in these diamonds is almost impossible to detect with the naked eye.

For faint yellow diamonds, if cut in a flattering diamond shape and set with the right metal color, their slight color will also be disguised. In that case, you can walk away with a stunning diamond engagement ring for a fraction of the price you would’ve paid for a colorless diamond.

A diagram of the diamond color grading chart

How Much Is Too Much to Spend On An Engagement Ring?

There is no correct answer to this question. How much you spend on an engagement ring depends on your personal budget and your partner’s expectations. If you are looking to save costs and get the absolute best ring for your budget, then you need to shop smart and do your research.

Overspending on an engagement ring can mean anything from picking a colorless diamond instead of a near-colorless diamond that would’ve looked just perfect in your chosen ring setting. But you won’t know which mistakes to avoid if you don’t utilize all the information at your disposal. Many ring shoppers use free online jewelry consultants- like our diamond consultants at JamesAllen.com.

How To Cut Costs On An Engagement Ring

Manipulate the 4Cs

Cut

The cut of the diamond is the first, arguably most important, C. Here you can decide between several fancy shapes like pear, oval, marquise, and cushion-cut, to name a few. If your partner wants their diamond to really sparkle and shine, spend some extra time choosing which cut might match their preference best.

Color

The color grade of your diamond can range from D-K. Most diamonds have a visible trace of yellow in their body color, whereas white diamonds are colorless.

Clarity

The clarity of your diamond may differ depending on whether it has any natural external blemishes or internal inclusions. Here, you may be looking for a diamond with zero imperfections or maybe one with a bit of character to it. The clarity of a diamond is directly impacted by its cut, something for you to keep in mind.

Carat Weight

The final C is carat, referring to the standard weight of your diamond or gem. One carat is 0.20g, and most couples are comfortable choosing an engagement ring with a center stone from 0.50 to 1.5 carats.

So, how do you manipulate the 4Cs? Here are our top tips:

  • Find a balance between color and clarity. While that balance varies by diamond shape, you can save money without sacrificing quality by staying on the high end of the color scale but the lower end of the clarity scale, as long as there are no visible inclusions.
  • With round, emerald, and asscher cut diamonds; you can typically go as low as a J color grade without seeing any incredibly noticeable color.
  • Cuts such as oval, cushion, radiant, pear, princess, marquise, and heart require quality a bit higher on the scale (G and up) so as not to see any color.
  • Well-cut diamonds like round and princess shapes have an incredible firey brilliance, no matter the size of the diamond.

Opt For Lab Created Diamonds Instead

When buying an engagement ring online, you’ll find a wider variety of diamond and gemstone center stones. While some people prefer the traditional natural diamond, the perks of investing in lab created diamonds are growing.

Lab grown diamonds and earth-created diamonds are optically and chemically identical. If you were to have both diamonds professionally inspected, you would find no differences. The only noticeable difference is the price tag. A lab created diamond is by far the more budget-friendly option.

Ditch The Diamond Altogether

If you’re on the fence about gemstones, remember this. All gemstones are rare, like diamonds, but more affordable per carat. They certainly put an alternative twist on a classic engagement ring, and they can be a more budget-friendly option compared to diamonds.

Gemstones can be set in ring settings with diamond accents or on their own in solitaire bands and still produce that show-stopping effect you want in your engagement ring.

If you want a larger yet inexpensive center stone on your ring, try a classic gemstone from sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and even morganite.

Trends Shaping Engagement Ring Spending

Engagement ring spending has changed significantly due to how millennials and older couples who are remarrying have shifted the dynamic of buying engagement rings.

Many individuals and couples choose to marry later in life after they’ve had their personal, professional, and worldly development. As a result, these people are more sure of what they want in an engagement ring regarding style, originality, price, ethics, and how they make their purchase.

These expressions of individuality and broader consumer awareness have manifested in several trends like unusual center stones, settings, colors, shapes, and styles. More couples opt for gemstones or lab grown diamonds because they are often more socially responsible, unique, and affordable.

Game, Set, Bling: Jewelry Inspired BY The French Open

The second Grand Slam of the year, the French Open held at the Roland-Garros tennis complex in Paris is known for its challenging red clay courts. The sport has long been known for its white outfits as classic as its namesake, the diamond tennis bracelet, yet just as tennis has evolved so has its looks….and its inspo.

Read on to find out how you can shine as bright as the La Coupe des Mousquetaires (The Musketeers’ Trophy).

Jewelry Inspired BY The French Open

Chris Evert & Her Flying Diamonds

Tennis legend and winner of multiple French Opens, champion Chris Evert is credited with popularizing the modern-day tennis bracelet. The accepted story is that in 1987 at the US Open, during a long volley, her diamond bracelet broke and flew across the court. Ever since they say, it has been known as the tennis bracelet.

While a fitting anecdote, it’s not quite true. The style has been around since the 1920s and the name since the 1970s. However, Evert certainly skyrocketed its popularity and familiarity, thanks to sporting one as she rose through the ranks to become an internationally known tennis star.

Beyond the court, it is no wonder tennis bracelets and necklaces have fast become a staple of fashion. A simple yet elegant, and timeless design, these pieces are made up of a string of diamonds in your chosen metal (platinum, rose gold, yellow gold, or white gold).

From royals to celebs, these diamonds can be seen everywhere! Perfectly appropriate for a black tie event yet just as stylish with a pair of jeans, there’s nothing diamond tennis bracelets (or necklaces) don’t go with! In fact, many brides sport this classic look on their wedding day.

No matter what style you sport on your special day, a diamond tennis bracelet will add those perfect sparkling touches. See below and go to JamesAllen.com for more options!

More Than Just Red Dirt

There are four types of tennis courts: fresh grass, artificial grass, hard courts, and clay. A clay court has multiple layers: thick gravel, crushed gravel, coal residue, crushed white limestone, and finally, red brick dust. It is this final layer that gives the courts of Roland-Garros their famous red color.

Clay is considered the most difficult surface to play on. While grass allows for fast tennis, the dirt of red clay courts is heavier, causing a slower, more tactical game. Likened to a game of chess, every move on a clay court carries that much more importance. One shot can affect the outcome four to five moves later!

Clay is also favorable to players who have a terrific topspin, a spectacular slice, or a dazzling drop shot. Players who master such skills often get to lift the Roland-Garros trophy as champion.

Want to style the color of these hallowed courts? Go for gemstones with red rubies or get yourself gorgeous garnets. Prefer a diamond? Choose a fancy red colored diamond! The gemstones from the fancy dark group are especially perfect. See below for inspo!

Who Was Roland Garros?

Roland-Garros is not only the tennis complex where the French Open takes place, its name is synonymous with the Grand Slam itself. Named after French aviator Roland Garros, the complex was built in 1928, originally for French players to defend their titles in the Davis Cup.

You might assume Garros was a tennis champion himself, or at least a tennis aficionado, even a great fan, but in fact, he was none of these things. Garros was an athlete in just about every sport besides tennis! So who was its namesake?

Roland Garros

In 1909, Garros went to an air show and it was love at first sight. Garros went on to buy a plane, become a self-taught pilot, was the first to complete multiple daring flights, and finally, became a war hero.

Not enough to have taught himself how to fly, Garros invented the first on-board machine gun in planes. A technology the Germans were able to co-opt to their advantage when he was shot down and captured without time to destroy his invention.

After escaping captivity, his health, including his sight, severely deteriorated, but Garros insisted on getting back in the cockpit. A decision that proved fatal as he was killed in battle in 1918. Years later, a university friend of Garros who was President of the Stade Français, successfully campaigned to have the tennis complex named after his old friend.

The complex’s logo is identifiable to even the most novice tennis fan, and its colors are not random. The green represents the lush trees and lawns around the courts, the white lettering is for the colors of the complex, and red-brown center marks the famous clay courts.

Check out these pieces that are perfect for any match.

Stars To Watch

The French Open is where the stars of tennis from all over the world come to shine. This challenging court brings out the best of the best. This year’s tournament is no exception, with Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Naomi Osaka who are just a few of the familiar names.

Rising stars to watch are Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and American Coco Gauff. Both are young, powerful, and considered to be dangerously talented. Alcaraz, who went pro at 18 and is the youngest player at 19 years old to reach the Madrid Open semi finals, beating fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal. Alcaraz went on to win the entire tournament.

With his whole career ahead of him and a streak as hot as fire, you will not want to take your eye off this young champion.

Right alongside Alcaraz is Coco Gauff. The American is the youngest ranked player at just 18 years old, she is ranked #10 for singles and #15 for doubles, all before she can legally have a drink! Gauff is most famous for beating tennis great Venus Williams when she was just 15 years old!

Gauff is ready to set the tennis world on fire, inspiring young girls everywhere! Want to feel like a champion? Or looking for the perfect gift for your future champion? Check out these options below!

The French Open is the premiere tournament on clay courts. In a complex named after a war hero, riddled with current and future tennis stars, it is a Grand Slam not to be missed! Whether you want to shine as bright as these tennis stars, luxuriate in the beauty of a tennis bracelet (or necklace!), or are looking for a championship-level gift, James Allen has what you need.

Eternity Rings vs. Anniversary Rings: What’s The Difference?

Jewelry that is given in the name of love always has extra sparkle. Eternity rings and anniversary rings definitely fall into this category. Symbolic of life-changing moments and epic love, these diamonds are not just your best friend but remind you of your best friend.

Eternity Rings vs. Anniversary Rings

Eternity Rings vs. Anniversary Rings: What’s The Difference?

While similarly popular, eternity rings and anniversary rings are different in both look and purpose. From the number of stones to the style of the band and the dates they are given, we explain the differences and clear up which ring you should buy and when.

Eternity rings are characterized by a band of uninterrupted diamonds, while anniversary rings feature a row of diamonds on the upper half of the band. Both consistently feature diamonds, which is not necessarily the case for wedding rings.

Whether you prefer sparkles so bright you need sunglasses, or something more muted, James Allen has the right ring for you.

What IS An Eternity Ring?

Eternity rings are available in a variety of diamond shapes and sizes, as well as different metal types, ensuring there is sure to be an eternity ring for you!

You might be wondering, can’t I just use an eternity ring for my anniversary or wedding ring? The answer is yes and no. Eternity rings have come to be given on very special occasions, and certainly, a wedding and an anniversary ARE special occasions!

Eternity rings are given on birthdays, landmark anniversaries (such as at the five, ten, and twenty-year marks), or even graduation!

Eternity rings shine bright with diamonds along with the entire band. The seemingly never-ending diamonds symbolize your never-ending love. And since your love is eternal, an eternity ring does not need an occasion! So feel free to profess your eternal love any day with an eternity ring!

These diamonds are your pledge to your partner. And since diamonds are ALWAYS in style, so will be your eternity ring. This piece of jewelry is not just a momentary trend, you can safely wear your eternity ring for well…eternity! And you will always be en vogue!

Eternity Rings: How To Wear Them

While there are no hard and fast rules, eternity rings are often worn next to the engagement ring and wedding ring sitting on the ring finger on your left hand.

When choosing an eternity ring, you want to keep in mind the style of the engagement and wedding rings. If your engagement ring and wedding ring are more subtle, then you may want to go for ALL the flash of an eternity ring.

And if your engagement and wedding rings are already blinged out, you may want to match that bling with styles such as a pavé or fishtail style, as seen below.

If you like a consistent look, then you’ll want to stick to the same diamond shape. So, if your engagement ring features an Asscher cut diamond, you’ll want to stick with that and choose an Asscher cut eternity ring.

Whatever style you choose, your eternity ring will certainly enhance the radiance not just of your ring finger, but of your whole hand!

If your engagement ring features a gemstone, then you will want to keep that color in mind when choosing the metal for your eternity ring. Not sure which metal goes best with which gemstone? Click here to learn about gemstone engagement rings!

Most importantly! When choosing your eternity ring KNOW YOUR SIZE! Eternity rings are VERY hard to resize due to the entire band being covered in diamonds. Often, it simply isn’t possible.

If the ring is a surprise, click here to get tips and tricks to get your partner’s ring size. Measure their finger in their sleep if you have to! We promise it is easier than trying to resize an eternity ring.

What IS An Anniversary Ring?

Anniversary rings are often given on the anniversary of your wedding and are meant to enhance your wedding ring. They feature diamonds, with a variety of settings, along with half the band, which is available in multiple metals. The metal of an anniversary ring is also chosen to compliment an existing wedding band.

Rings are a VERY popular choice for an anniversary gift. Traditionally, gold is the gift for your first wedding anniversary, so for this event, many couples will choose a white or yellow gold band as seen below:

Whether choosing a five, seven, or nine stone option, you can’t go wrong with an anniversary ring. Enough diamonds for those who want to look ballin’ but not so much for those who prefer a quieter glam.

Anniversary rings are the goldilocks of iced out rings. However many diamonds, whichever metal, James Allen has a ring your partner is sure to love.

How To Wear Your Anniversary Ring

So if your engagement ring and wedding ring are on your ring finger on your left hand, where do you wear your anniversary ring? Literally, any finger you want! One of the beauties of an anniversary ring is that there is no “traditional” finger to wear them on, so choose any finger you like!

Many people do choose to wear their anniversary ring on the ring finger on their right hand (the finger next to your pinky). This allows the ring to both compliment your engagement, eternity, and wedding rings, but stand out on its own as well.

You can also wear your anniversary ring on your left hand on a different finger, allowing your left hand to be dripping in diamonds. Or you can stack your anniversary ring with your engagement ring, wedding ring, and eternity ring, giving your left hand’s ring finger the appearance of a diamond-encrusted wand!

Wherever you decide to wear it, you are sure to enjoy the sparkle that came from a place of love.

Inspired By Nature: Celebrate Earth Day In Style

Earth Day is more important with each passing year. A time to stop and appreciate our planet and all its beauty. All the colors of the rainbow, all shades and textures can be found in every corner of the planet. Want to don jewels of all the hues of mother earth? Read on to see how!

Diamond engagement ring

Earthly Greens

The color green symbolizes nature and serenity. It is also said to bring good luck! Coming in a variety of shades, green can be as rich as freshly cut grass, as subtle as green tea, and as dark as a mighty evergreen tree.

You have multiple options if you want to dazzle in green. First gemstones, look no further than May’s birthstone, the Emerald. Harnessing more than just the luck of the Irish, sporting emeralds will give you a downright royal look!

However, May’s birthstone is not alone in rocking the lucky green! Fancy colored diamonds also come in this luscious color. Fancy green colored diamonds, which are thought to represent prosperity and abundance, are not only another great way to sport this look, but fancy green colored diamonds make beautiful, stylish, and unique engagement rings.

See options for emeralds and fancy green diamonds below!

Bringing to mind images of grassy knolls, tall trees, and commanding plants, green is a color that reminds us of the serenity and power of the earth. Such a dynamic color, you can also adorn yourself in green by wearing the gemstone peridot.

Practically screaming the freshness of a summer’s day, peridot gemstone jewelry is the perfect birthstone for August. Grab some peridot pieces today and always have that summer feeling.

Ocean Blues

Producing images of the sky above and the sea below, blue represents loyalty, wisdom, and sincerity. The color also brings to mind ideas such as freedom and intuition. Like water, which covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface, with ocean’s holding almost 100% of the Earth’s water, blue has a myriad of shades.

Some of blue’s many shades can be found in fancy blue colored diamonds, as well as the gemstones aquamarine, blue sapphires, blue topaz, and tanzanite. Its many shades allow it to create varied looks; from incredibly luxurious to sparkling fun, and everything in between.

The flexibility of blue’s multiple shades also allows it to pair well with yellow, white, and rose gold. Whatever shade, whatever metal, whatever stone, James Allen has a blue approved by mother earth, ready to add to your collection.

Sun Rays

When you think yellow you think sunshine, happiness, and warmth. Symbolizing youth, energy, and optimism, yellow can be found in the gemstone citrine, a fancy yellow colored diamond, and of course, yellow gold.

The sun provides solar energy and the light and heat that makes life possible. Showcasing the brightness of the sun, and the yellow of a sunflower, these citrine and yellow sapphire gemstone pieces, yellow pearls, and yellow gold fine jewelry are giving us life!

Fancy yellow colored diamonds are all the rage. It is no wonder more and more celebrities are being spotted sporting fancy yellow colored diamonds. With their timeless, gorgeous, and unique style, fancy yellow colored diamonds are a perfect choice to create a jaw dropping engagement ring.

Whichever your shade of yellow, James Allen has the piece for you to start shining like the sun!

Textures Of Nature

Planet earth is an amazing marvel, featuring every texture you could ever imagine. Tree bark, mud, mountains, and stone; the earth’s textures are something to be celebrated everyday. See how bamboo brings the feeling of tranquility and nature to these engagement and wedding rings.

Playing with texture is a great way to bring depth to your look, but textures are not limited to textiles! Inspired by the different textures of nature, James Allen has a plethora of choices for rich textures when it comes to rings, especially engagement and wedding rings.

The style of these rings allows them to work fabulously as fashion rings too!

And since more and more men are complimenting their looks with jewelry, options are more important here than ever! Through alternative metals and styled carvings, these rings bring the feeling of nature simply by slipping them on your finger.

In particular, alternative and carved rings for men showcase textures and patterns found throughout nature. Checkout some options below! Unsure if a textured look is right for you? See our pros and cons chart below to help you decide!

Textured & Alternative Rings

Pros

  • Unique, Non-Traditional Look
  • More Affordable
  • More Scratch-Resistant
  • Hypoallergenic

Cons

  • Problematic To Resize
  • Heavier Than Traditional Gold Rings
  • Can Be Problematic Around Water
  • More Susceptible To Cracking

Pollinated Perfection

One of the most beautiful and fascinating things in nature is pollination. This essential part of plant reproduction sees bees and other insects fertilizing flowers. This captivating process is crucial as it leads to the creation of fruit and other foods humans and animals eat, as well as numerous products we use.

In short, the earth would not survive without pollination. It also allows very cute insects to create very beautiful flowers 🌺 and gorgeous fine jewelry. These pieces will remind you of insects, flowers, and other critters, but without allergies!

Not into the insect look? Check out these adorable pieces that will give you a constant reminder about your furry best friend and other adorable animals.

Earthly Style

Our planet is filled with natural inspiration and Earth Day is a good reminder that it is our job to protect it. The textures, colors, and creatures are fascinating works of mother nature and beautiful influences on style.

The calming colors and rich compositions, combined with the meaningful symbolism makes all the workings of earth the ultimate style guide.

The Ultimate Guide To Buying Men’s Engagement Rings

So you’ve found “the one” and you’re ready to pop that magic question to the man of your dreams, but how will you find the perfect men’s engagement ring? Allow us to walk you through all you need to know about finding that perfect ring to seal the deal!

Mens engagement rings

Engagement rings for men are fast becoming the new normal, and we’re here for it!

For those of you who are thinking about popping the question to the man of your dreams, we’ve put together a guide on men’s engagement rings and how to find the perfect one for your partner.

Picking an engagement ring can be so much fun, all you need is your partner’s style in mind, your budget, and maybe one or two close family or friends’ opinions and support.

The History Of Men’s Engagement Rings

Believe it or not, there are many countries where men’s engagement rings are common and have been for some time. Despite this, for many in the United States, buying men’s engagement rings was a concept that simply couldn’t take off.

Fast forward to ten years ago, and we finally see the trend gaining momentum.

Why?

Societal practices and viewpoints have changed drastically and what used to seem odd is now a trend of the times. We love a man who wants to wear a symbol of his commitment. Trust us when we say there are more than a few fellas who are ready to wear their heart on their ring finger for all to see.

The history of men wearing wedding bands came about in World War II, and for no other reason than simply wanting to remember their special someone while they were away. Wedding bands became a symbol of commitment- a sentiment that’s now shared with engagement and promise rings

Celebrities like Karamo Brown and Michael Bublé have also raised awareness of the practice by proudly wearing their own engagement rings for all to see.

Celebrity Men’s Engagement Rings

Here are just a few of our favorite gents rocking their engagement rings.

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran proposed to his lifelong friend Cherry Seaborn in 2017 and the moment wasn’t exactly as he had planned. She’d been so shocked she asked him if he was joking. No jokes, she said yes and he was spotted soon after wearing a ring of his own on the red carpet. That alone sparked rumors that the two had wed but Sheeran shared that she had made his silver clay ring as a beautiful engagement gift.

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp proposed to actress Amber Heard with a vintage-style engagement ring and was then seen wearing it himself at a press conference. He referred to it as his “management ring.” We love that he took a ring that might not have been his fiance’s personal style and it kept it for himself. Engagement ring or management ring, we can get behind a man that loves a good diamond center stone and rocks it with confidence.

Brooklyn Beckham

Brooklyn Beckham is another A-list up and comer who is sporting this trend. The oldest of Victoria and David Beckham’s children proposed to his stunning girlfriend, Nicola Anne Peltz before being seen sporting his very own engagement ring. It’s safe to say the two are very in love and he is happy to wear his ring as a symbol of what’s to come!

Does An Engagement Ring Replace A Wedding Band?

The short answer is no, they don’t replace a wedding ring.

Why?

Engagement rings have different universal symbolism compared to wedding bands. One shows the intention of committing to a lifelong relationship with a chosen partner, while the other shows the joining of the two people together.

However, it’s really up to each individual. In history, women have worn both their engagement rings and wedding rings together. It’s also possible to wear one without the other depending on your mood or the occasion. Throw caution to the wind and wear your engagement ring on a different finger, if you want to wear both at the same time. The rules aren’t set in stone, so do what feels more comfortable for you.

What Is The Difference Between Men’s Engagement Rings and Men’s Wedding Rings?

One of the two key differences between wedding and engagement rings is their symbolism and when they’ll be worn. For wedding bands, it’s all in the name – typically wedding rings are first worn for the first time on the day of the actual wedding. These rings are usually given from partner to partner to symbolize the beginning of their married life together and recognition of a lifelong commitment.

An engagement ring receives a lot more hype and attention and is usually worn from the time of the proposal. An engagement ring, in every way, symbolizes intent and also creates excitement for the couple and their loved ones.

No matter where you go, engagement rings for men serve the same cultural purpose, perhaps only with a more masculine flair to their design.

Men’s Engagement Ring Styles

Men’s engagement rings are just as much an expression of personal style and unique characteristics as women’s engagement rings. To buy the right engagement ring for your partner, you need to take all of this into consideration.

What do your partner’s personality and tastes say about their unique style?

The Traditionalist: Classic Engagement Rings

If plain and simple suits your partner best, stick with the classic mental engagement rings. Simple bands made from precious metals will always be timeless. These are also the easiest bands to get engraved if you’re looking to add a refined personal touch to a classic ring.

Masculine Chic: Black Wedding Bands

Black wedding rings are the new talk of the town and can easily work as an engagement ring or fashion ring. The color black is often associated with power, strength, and authority. So if these represent your man’s style or character, a black band, or a band with black accents, could be the perfect fit.

A Little Sparkle: Men’s Diamonds Engagement Rings

Who said diamonds are only a girl’s best friend? Men’s diamond wedding bands are becoming increasingly popular. What we love about this trend is there are variations of these rings to suit each individual’s desire for a bit of sparkle. You can find a band with a single diamond or other diamond rings that have a small selection of stones on the band or circling the entire band.

Rough Around The Edges: Carved Bands For Men

A textured ring can give a classic metal band a little edge to it by providing some dimensions to an otherwise timeless design. These rings are perfect for men who like a clean look but don’t mind adding some layers to their unique engagement ring.

Different Metal Types For Men’s Engagement Rings

If you’re looking for a hypoallergenic metal, consider these metals for your partner:

  • Tantalum and Cobalt Chrome™ (without nickel) are great for medical and chemical applications because it’s both hypoallergenic and bio-compatible.
  • Tungsten is also hypoallergenic and a great substitute for those allergic to yellow gold wedding bands.
  • Platinum is hypoallergenic and a perfect replacement for white gold men’s wedding bands because it has no traces of nickel.
  • Titanium is also safe to wear and anti-allergenic.
  • Platinum is 95% pure, making it the most hypoallergenic metal choice.
  • Ceramic contains no unwanted components in its composition.

How To Clean Your Engagement Ring

  1. Warm water + dish soap + soft toothbrush.
Make your own ring cleaner by filling a bowl with warm (not hot) water, and then adding a few drops of dish soap. Put your jewelry in the mixture and let it sit for 15 minutes. Afterwards, take your ring out of the bowl and scrub it clean with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse, dry with a soft towel, and lay out on a soft surface to dry.
  2. Polishing cloth.
In a pinch, a normal microfiber cloth will do. However, specialty jewelers’ cloths are the best, since they contain particular cleaning compounds formulated to both polish and remove small scratches in your ring.

West Side Story Lookalike Engagement Rings

Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake is coming out in December 2021 and we are snapping with excitement! Although the 1961 original was historic, it’s undoubtedly time for an update. With critics raving about this sublime version, it’s time to weigh in with matching sparkle.

Marie from Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story

Classics persist through the ages and are reborn through the ages. West Side Story most definitely proves this rule, with the Broadway run re-envisioned in the 1961 movie, and now the 2021 cinematic remake. West Side Story itself is a modern reimagining of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

In West Side Story, love, tragedy, anger, class tension, and disenfranchised rage are put on display in a rumbling, technicolor flurry. A powerful production deserves worthy statement pieces. At James Allen, we were inspired by the gorgeous costumes, iconic soundtrack, and ageless story to hand-pick the perfect engagement rings for Broadway fans.

Read on for West Side Story-inspired lookalike engagement rings!

Maria’s Dress | Ruby and Diamond Sunburst Halo Engagement Ring

Perhaps the most iconic costume in West Side Story is the dress Maria wears to the neighborhood dance: a simple white dress accented with a bold red ribbon. We’ve got the perfect complement to her outfit: this white gold ring with a ruby center stone. An engagement ring is a perfect accessory for this outfit because 1) it’s at the dance that Tony and Maria have their first encounter, and 2) Maria’s outfit is made by Anita, her best friend, a talented wedding dress seamstress.

2021 Anita | Bird of Paradise Engagement Ring

In Spielberg’s version, Anita struts through the neighborhood dance in a gorgeous bright yellow dress with a red ruffled petticoat. There’s no better ring to match her twirling antics than this yellow gold bird of paradise engagement ring set with a beautiful ruby center stone. Round and marquise cut diamond dot its unique asymmetrical halo.

1961 Anita | Amethyst and Diamond Engagement Ring

In the 1961 movie, Anita, played by Rita Moreno, is instantly recognizable in her purple mermaid dress. She leads the pack in every dance, swirling her skirts in an unforgettable purple vision. This 1.8-carat emerald-cut amethyst will, like Anita, mesmerize a crowd.

Tony & Maria meeting | Intertwined Bypass Engagement Ring

Tony and Maria’s first meeting at the neighborhood dance is magical. Almost instantly, they lock eyes and are besotted with one another.

The Challenge Dance | Double Halo and Shank Pavè Engagement Ring

The Challenge Dance in the gym starts out as a get-together dance. Glad Hand sets the kids up in two circles: “Boys go on the outside, girls on the inside…when the music stops, each boy dances with whichever girl is opposite.” What better to wear to a Challenge Dance than a blingy double-halo engagement ring that resembles the dual-circled dance floor?

Puerto Rico in America | Red, White, and Blue Engagement Ring

Here you are free and you have pride! This patriotic ring’s red, white, and blue colors represent the national flags of both Puerto Rico and the United States. This white gold setting, rubies, and a stunning sapphire make this ring one that you’ll feel proud to wear throughout the country.

Rita Moreno’s Valentina | Vintage Navette Engagement Ring

In Spielberg’s remake, Doc no longer runs the local drugstore; rather, his place has been taken by his widow, Valentina. And Valentina is played by Rita Morena, who won the best supporting actress Oscar for playing Anita in the original 1961 film! We’ve chosen an intricate vintage ring to honor this timeless Hollywood legend. A beaded navette pattern gives off an effortlessly French air, and a pavè halo adds even more sparkle.

Maria and Tony’s Balcony Scene | Bypass Solitaire Engagement Ring

Oh, the world is wild and bright with this dual-leveled bypass ring. The center diamond’s offset mounting resembles the couple’s late-night meeting on the balcony: with Tony professing his newfound love from the alleyway to Maria, who lovingly looks down upon him from her second-floor apartment and responds in kind.

Sharks vs Jets | Half Bezel-Set Pavè Engagement Ring

This symmetrical half bezel-set ring brings to mind the confrontation between the Sharks and the Jets. The half-bezel setting is designed almost as if the side stones are pushing the pavè half-halo up and over the center diamond like a cresting wave.

West Side Story is all about simmering class tensions that can’t help but boil over when confronted with the love of a young couple, and this seemingly overflowing diamond engagement ring captures the story’s teeming emotions.

Something’s Coming, Something Good | Petite Pavè Engagement Ring

Like Tony, we can’t help but burst with optimism at this petite pave ring. It’s one of our most popular styles, with over 1000 five-star reviews! Its band twinkles thanks to its French Cut pavè settings, which feature tiny v-shaped slots along its edges that expose each diamond to even more light. And more light = more sparkle.

Anybodys | Two-Tone Solitaire Engagement Ring

A tomboyish outsider for most of the play, Anybodys tags along with the Jets until she’s officially welcomed into the gang after a post-rumble act of bravery. Anybodys is tough, persistent, and plucky, deserving of a unique engagement ring that can withstand Jet-worthy hijinks.

This two-tone ring, with white gold on the outside and yellow gold within, suits the code-switching Anybody’s comfort across the neighborhood’s borders. Sure, she says “I ain’t never gonna get married. Too noisy.” But everyone deserves some sparkle, and diamond rings aren’t only for engagements.

You’re up against an opponent whose curiosity knows no bounds. To pull this off, you’re going to need an airtight game plan and nerves of steel!

How To Shop For Your Engagement Ring In Secret

We’ve already discussed the benefits of shopping for a surprise ring versus collaborating with your SO. If you’re going the route of keeping the ring a secret, you’ll want to ensure you don’t leave a footprint – digital or otherwise – that could blow your cover.

Shopping For The Ring Offline

First, never use a joint bank account! One option is to set up a new account specifically for buying the ring (you can close it once they say Yes!). Or you can pay with an old credit card that only you know about. Oh, and don’t withdraw a large sum of money from the ATM; that’s a dead giveaway.

Shopping For The Ring Online

When ring shopping online, if you share computers/devices with your SO, make sure you sign out of all their accounts before starting to plan your surprise proposal. If you absolutely must print something out, don’t leave that smoking gun sitting in your printer tray.

The Best Places To Hide Your Engagement Ring

Normally there’s no safer place to store your ring than the ring box it came in. However, there’s no getting around the fact that it’s still a box that will draw curiosity, and unless your partner is already aware of the ring, you might want to consider switching the box for something less obvious.

The best places to hide your engagement ring

With Trusted Family/Friends

Storing the ring with a trusted friend or family member until you’re ready to pop the question is great because it literally keeps the ring off your property. They can’t find something that isn’t there! Just be careful not to choose anyone who would be tempted to “spill the beans.”

Hard-To-Reach Places

Every home has a nook and cranny your partner just can’t reach, or a dark closet they never go in. These can be great options! Just make sure there is NOTHING in there they will need to go searching for! Pick the deepest, darkest, least convenient place and you will be good to go.

In An Old Pair Of Shoes

Finally, those old shoes you never wear have a purpose! Make sure it’s a pear your partner never touches, would not clean, and would not throw out! (Can you imagine?!) Throw in some potpourri, so the shoe stink doesn’t transfer, put them in a secure place, and wait for that big moment!

At Work

If your office is secure or there is a secure option, your work can be a great place to store the ring! After all, even if your partner is visiting, they are not rifling through your office! And if they are, try a co-worker’s office, a safe, or similarly secure place at work.

In A Gym Bag

Whether you’re a gym junkie, a little league coach, or have a leftover gym bag from your high school glory days, this is another great option. Just make sure it’s not in a pocket where your partner might need something, say your water bottle or to get your gym towel for the laundry.

Hiding your engagement ring in a gym bag

In A Book

Make sure you are choosing a book that 1) your partner does not use (like a cookbook) or 2) was intending to read. 3) Make sure it is not a book they would recommend to a friend, and 4) choose a book you don’t mind cutting a ring-box size hole in!

How To Hide A Ring While Traveling

Whether going by car, train, plane, or even by foot, if you are planning to pop the question while traveling, you’ll want to review our tips below to ensure your partner gets the surprise of a lifetime!

How to hide an engagement ring while traveling

Pack the Ring in a Carry-On Bag

Pack the ring in your carry-on, never a checked bag. Unfortunately, bags get lost all the time. Don’t chance it. Make sure the ring is always with you!

Follow Airport Security Rules

Don’t let a TSA agent blow your surprise proposal! Make sure you know airport security rules and make sure it’s very secure. And, of course, follow all airline security rules to avoid being stopped and searched.

So pack it discreetly! Your bag may be searched and you don’t want your cover blown!  Consider using non-traditional packing in case this happens.

Look Into Engagement Ring Travel Insurance

Safety first! Another option is travel insurance for your engagement ring. James Allen has partnered with Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company to help you protect your ring with comprehensive coverage.

Anything can happen at any time, and this can be especially useful if you or your beloved are frequent travelers. Be sure to check if coverage is domestic, international, or both.

Find a Discreet Safe

Once you arrive at your destination, you need to keep the ring both hidden and secure. If you are staying at a hotel, find out in advance if there is a hotel safe you may store the ring in.

Another option is to keep the ring in an indiscreet spot in your suitcase. Once you have unpacked, slip the ring into a location your SO won’t be checking, and keep the suitcase tucked away until it’s time!

Keeping The Ring A Secret: Unboxing Your Engagement Ring

Unboxing your engagement ring

The Hidden Presentation Box

Only once you peel back the outer carton does it start to get more interesting.

The first thing you’ll notice is an elegant presentation box embossed with the James Allen logo. This doubles as a jewelry box and even has a drawer for keeping your diamond certificates, cleaning cloth, and whatnot. Nestled on top is a small red box that houses the main attraction: the engagement ring.

Keeping the Ring A Secret: Customer Service

If the logistics of keeping the ring a secret seem like Mission Impossible, our Customer Service reps are on hand to help. These masters of misdirection can be reached 24/7 via live chat, phone, and email. They know every trick in the book and can even suggest ways to distract your unsuspecting SO.

Keeping The Ring A Secret FAQs:

What if my partner receives the package?

It’s worth noting that our packages require a signature upon delivery. If you’re uncomfortable receiving yours at home or are worried that your partner or someone else might intercept it, we can help you find the best place to ship to.

What about the safe in the hotel room?

Don’t leave it in your hotel room safe if your SO is likely to use it; instead, ask the concierge if you can leave it in the safe at the front desk.

Is it safe to leave the ring unattended?

If you need to leave the ring unattended, just make sure it is safe. Invest in a VERY good lock, ensure it is a secure location, or leave it where someone is around 24/7 to guard it.

Final Thoughts

Perfect partner? Check! Fabulous ring, stashed safely? Double check! Now just wait for that big moment. They’ll say yes, start showing off the ring, and you can sit back and revel in a job well done! Let us know where you stashed your sparkler on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, or Twitter.

What Is a VVS Diamond?

Are you wondering what a VVS diamond is but not sure where to start? This handy guide will help you decide if a VVS diamond is right for you.

VVS Diamond

You’re probably here because you’re thinking about getting engaged – yay you! An engagement is an incredibly exciting milestone, but let’s be honest: Buying a diamond can feel overwhelming sometimes. If you’re in the market for an engagement ring, you might be asking yourself: “what is a VVS diamond and why in the world does it matter?”

1. Let’s Talk Basics: What Is A VVS Diamond?

To get a little technical: VVS is an acronym for “Very Very Slightly” – which refers to a diamond that is very, very slightly included. An “inclusion” is the official term for a diamond’s internal characteristics and a “blemish” is the term for a diamond’s external characteristics. These can include characteristics like feathers, crystals, twinning wisps, clouds and surface graining. They will determine how much light is able to pass through a diamond, which will in turn affect the stone’s light return – arguably, the best part of buying a diamond. Who doesn’t want a diamond that sparkles

On the clarity scale, VVS diamonds are one step below “flawless” diamonds. They are always clear of any imperfections to the naked eye and usually have no visible imperfections under 10x magnification. At James Allen, we use up to 40x magnification technology, so you can be sure you’re seeing each diamond with the same detail and ease as you would in a jewelry store.

2. VVS1 vs VVS2 Diamonds

VVS diamonds fall into two categories: Very Very Slightly Included 1(VVS1) and Very Very Slightly Included 2 (VVS2). VVS2s are slightly more included than VVS1s, and the nature of these inclusions is usually different. For example, VVS1 diamonds tend to have tiny imperfections towards the side of the diamond, as opposed to the center. Imperfections on the side are preferable to those in the center because they do not affect light performance as much.

VVS1 diamonds are generally more expensive than VVS2 diamonds. Because VVS diamonds fall just under flawless diamonds (FL and IF), they’re a great option for people who want a practically flawless diamond without a flawless price tag.

3. VVS vs Flawless Diamonds

One of the main reasons to choose a VVS diamond is that it often will look just like a flawless diamond but saves you a nice chunk of cash.

Let’s compare the two diamonds below. The one on the left is 1.02 carats, H color and IF clarity. The one on the right is 1.00 carat, H color and VVS1 clarity.

Can you spot any differences between the two diamonds?

Both diamonds are roughly the same size, as the .02 difference will not be perceptible to the naked eye. Both diamonds are the same H color, which faces up white. Neither has any fluorescence. Both have excellent symmetry and polish grades. Both are certified by GIA.

In short, the only real differences between these two diamonds are their clarity and price tags. There is roughly a $600 difference between them, which is a result of the clarity grade jump.

If you’re looking to maximize your budget for a high-clarity diamond engagement ring, VVS diamonds are a great choice. The difference in price could get you any of the following engagement rings:

14K White Gold 2mm Comfort Fit Solitaire Engagement Ring

Knife Edge Solitaire Engagement Ring

14K Rose Gold 2mm Knife Edge Solitaire Engagement Ring

Split Shank Solitaire Engagement Ring

Cable Solitaire Engagement Ring

4. Which jewelry pieces are most suitable for a VVS diamond?

VVS diamonds are great choices for higher carat diamond engagement rings (above 3 carats) and step cuts (emerald and Asscher, or square). They also allow you to buy a setting that really showcases the center diamond, as opposed to settings that are better at hiding inclusions (for example, this bezel setting). Settings that have fewer prongs, less metal, as well as  tension settings are ideal for showcasing VVS diamonds, like the ones below:

Petite Pavé Engagement Ring

14K Rose Gold Petite Pave Engagement Ring

Bow-Tie Channel Set  Engagement Ring

14K White Gold Bow-Tie Channel Set Diamond Engagement Ring

Spiral Tension Set Engagement Ring

Rope Solitaire Engagement Ring

14K White Gold Rope Solitaire Engagement Ring

Tapered Half-Bezel Engagement Ring

Pinched Bar Pavé Engagement Ring

14K Rose Gold Pinched Bar Pave Engagement Ring

If you’re looking for fine jewelry that features smaller diamonds, like tennis bracelets, there’s no need to go for VVS clarity. You can stick with SIs or VSs since inclusions are harder to spot in smaller diamonds.

5. Wrapping Up

A VVS diamond is a great choice for someone who is looking for a flawless-looking diamond, without the flawless price tag. VVS diamonds are intended to be the pièce-de-resistance of any engagement ring, so you might want to show off your stone with a setting that puts the diamond front and center.

Earth Created vs. Lab Created Diamonds: A Guide

Lab grown diamond or earth-created diamond? We’ve got all the info you need to live your best sparkling life with the perfect diamond for you!

fancy shaped diamonds sitting on a pink surface

Lab created diamonds have become increasingly popular and are pretty much the new kids on the jewelry block. Like many new unknowns, people are a little skeptical at first when they hear about lab grown diamonds, but rest assured, they make for a perfect alternative to earth-created diamonds. Let’s start with some basic facts so you can decide with 100% confidence which sort of sparkle sets a twinkle in your eye.

What Is A Diamond

Diamonds are carbon atoms. When they’re arranged in a very particular structure, you get the tough and beautiful stone we know and love. Producing this special carbon arrangement in nature demands conditions that are intense. We’re talking high heat and super-high pressure. Needless to say, very few places in the world are capable of producing earth-created diamonds.

A variety of loose fancy-shaped diamonds

The Key Difference Between Earth and Lab Created Diamonds

Earth created diamonds are sourced from below the earth’s surface, whereas lab created diamonds are created in simulated “below-ground” conditions in a lab.

To put it simply, their origin is the only difference between these two types of diamonds.

Technology has advanced to the point that we don’t always have to go digging for our precious stones; we can simulate the necessary extreme conditions in specialized pressure chambers in a lab.

Lab created diamonds are grown from tiny carbon “seeds” that develop in these chambers over months, as scorching gasses deposit carbon atom-by-atom onto the original seed. Lab created diamonds even develop their own unique characteristics (inclusions, clarity, etc.) along the way, and once they’re fully grown, they’re cut into the shape that suits their qualities best.

Factors To Consider When Choosing Your Diamond

Picking a diamond isn’t easy- there’s your budget to consider, your partner’s preference for cut, clarity, carat, and color, and its rarity factor.

Cost

One of the biggest upsides to lab grown diamonds is that they’re generally about 30% more affordable than earth-created diamonds.

Why?

The diamond-growing process is less resource-intensive than the diamond-mining process. It simply costs less to grow a diamond in a lab than it does to mine a diamond from the earth, and those savings are passed along to diamond shoppers. That means that for the same cost, you can purchase a lab created diamond that’s 30% larger than an earth-created one but just as dazzling.

Value

Earth-created diamonds are the classic choice. Lab created diamonds are the fresh choice.

There is no doubt that earth-created diamonds contain millennia of history, tradition, and romance. They are one of nature’s most incredible products. Drawn from deep within the earth, these sparkling treasures have been proudly flaunted by generations upon generations – paving the way for you to carry on the tradition.

Lab created diamonds, on the other hand, are the next step in diamond history. Technically speaking, they’re brand new. But traditionally speaking, diamonds are diamonds forever. Lab created diamonds give their wearer a unique chance to create new memories.

Both earth-created diamonds and lab created diamonds hold their sparkle forever, so they’ll be just as beautiful when you pass them on as heirlooms as they are when you wear them on a night out.

14K White Gold Three Prong Lab Created Diamond Tennis Bracelet (3.00 CTW - F-G / VS2-SI1)

Cuts & Colors

Both earth-created and lab created diamonds are available in nearly every shape and color – even fancy colors!

Colorful diamonds, like canary yellow ones, are quite rare. Their shocking hues are caused by trace amounts of non-carbon elements, like nitrogen. By adding these elements to a growing diamond in its pressure chamber, lab grown diamonds take on the same fancy colors as earth-created diamonds.

Good news: any diamond can be cut into any shape. When it comes to diamond cuts, you truly are spoiled for choice!

GIA Certified Lab Created Diamonds

Like all earth-created diamonds, lab grown diamonds also come with their very own birth certificate (GIA Certification).

Since lab-grown diamonds are optically and chemically the same as mined diamonds, they come with their own certification. Today, most lab created diamonds are certified by IGI, International Gemological Institute. Additionally, these diamonds are being accepted and certified by the GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, which has developed sophisticated devices that are used to screen and identify the difference between natural diamonds and lab grown ones.

Should You Get a Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring

The short answer is, why not? Here are 5 reasons to choose a lab-created diamond engagement ring:

1: Budget-Friendly

You’re able to maximize your budget and walk away with a bigger center stone for your engagement ring if you choose a lab created diamond. Furthermore, it might not even be about the size of the ring, but more about being able to get the diamond of your dreams for a third of the price.

2: The Ethical Choice

Lab grown diamonds are definitely the more ethical choice and guaranteed to come conflict-free. Their environmental impact is minimal at best, with zero ecological damage since they’re not mined.

3: Stress-Free Shopping Experience

Most online jewelry retailers with customization options, like our very own ring studio, allow you to choose your preferred center stone. That means you’re able to inspect your diamond options (often in real-time), and browse at your own pace.

4: Lab created diamonds are REAL

This can’t be emphasized enough, both lab-grown diamonds and mined diamonds have the same chemical, optical and physical properties. A lab created diamond is not a diamond alternative like moissanite, it’s the real deal.

5: Unique

Lab grown diamonds are unique in their own right. Not only can they be cut and shaped to your heart’s desire, but they can be cut to absolute perfection. Our True Heart™ diamonds are a premier collection of perfectly cut diamonds, known for their flawless internal symmetry and proportions.

Choosing the stone that suits your lifestyle is an important part of designing meaningful jewelry that will last you throughout your life. And if you choose to buy either lab created diamonds or earth-created diamonds, you can choose from 1000’s beautiful options at James Allen.
