The September Birthstone: Discover Sapphire

The September Birthstone: Discover Sapphire

Who can escape the fascinating appeal of Sapphires? With its perfect balance of classical beauty and contemporary expression, it’s no wonder this gemstone is so prevalent amongst many royal families.

The September Birthstone: Discover Sapphire

September brings seasonal changes and ushers in the start of the beautiful fall season. The month of September is not only one of the most popular months for weddings around the world, but it also possesses a largely favored gemstone too.

Although the color that comes to mind for most people when they think of sapphire is deep royal blue, in reality, no two sapphires are alike because of the many variations of colors and shades. This guarantees a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry with a beautiful and symbolic meaning.

Keep reading to learn more about one of our favorite birthstones.

What Are The Three Birthstones For September?

As a matter of fact, there are several gemstones that represent September besides sapphires. The month of September actually boasts three unique and magnificent gemstones as its birthstone. They include Sapphire, Lapis Lazuli, and Carnelian.

Even though sapphires are the most common gemstone choice for September, zircons come in second place. But don’t let that stop you from adding any of the less popular gemstones to your jewelry collection.

What Is The September Birthstone Color?

The beautiful rich blue of Sapphire makes it one of the most desirable birthstones. But did you know that Sapphires come in a kaleidoscope of colors too? While the most popular hue is royal blue, the gemstone’s colors can vary from pink, green, orange, purple, and yellow. From our point of view, no matter what you choose as your favorite shade, it still counts as a September birthstone.

September Birthstone History & Symbolism

The word ‘sapphire’ comes from the Latin word ‘saphirus’ and the Greek word ‘sapheiros, both meaning blue. Did you know that the unique meaning behind every gemstone is informed by its history and tradition? The historic and much-desired gemstone is customarily connected with royalty, nobility, and spirituality.
To date, royals believe that the September birthstone brings protection, good fortune, healing, and wisdom. But many also believe that sapphires represent virtue, good fortune, and sincerity, which are all important qualities in a marriage. Sapphire engagement rings have long been a symbol of devotion and sincerity, making them a perfect choice for brides.

Where Is The September Birthstone Found?

Sapphire is found in only a handful of locations around the world. The three most well-known and important sources for the September birthstone are Kashmir, Myanmar (formerly Burma), and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, in particular, boasts the world’s most sought-after sapphires because of their rich, shimmering blue hues. However, sapphires from Sri Lanka are among the most expensive.

More recently, mines and significant quantities of the September birthstone have also been found in Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Madagascar, India, and the United States (Montana), among other countries in Asia and Africa. In fact, Madagascar is fast becoming one of the world’s leading countries of stunning sapphires.

September Birthstone Jewelry Gifts

From elegant necklaces to bold sapphire earrings, the JamesAllen.com September birthstone jewelry collection is complete with various styles, designs, and colors. Making it perfect for those looking to make the ultimate style statement. September birthstone jewelry makes an excellent gift for a number of reasons:

  • Celebrating a special occasion? Sapphire jewelry is a traditional symbol for the 5th and 45th year’s anniversary.
  • That special someone in your life who is born in September
  • Looking for a stunning piece of “something blue” jewelry?
  • Is Blue your favorite color? Go on and treat yourself to a piece of beautiful fine jewelry you’ll cherish forever.

Now, when it comes to celebrities, blue sapphire engagement rings in particular are very popular and have also been associated with the royal family for centuries.

This trend began during the early 80s when Prince Charles gave Lady Diana Spencer a magnificent Sapphire engagement ring which, of course, came with a hefty price tag. The non-traditional and very unique engagement ring caused major controversy, as not everyone in the British royal family approved of the bold gemstone.

Princess Diana’s sapphire blue engagement ring may be one of the most recognizable pieces of jewelry in history and it seems many other stars like Victoria Beckham, Penelope Cruz, and of course, Kate Middleton have followed suit.

Sapphire Birthstone Care & Cleaning

Jewelers use a tool called the Mohs Hardness Scale to rate a gemstone’s general resistance to scratching. Gemstones are ranked from 1 to 10 on the scale, diamonds are the hardest at 10, while pearls are the softest at an average of 3. It’s important to note that higher gemstones are more durable while lower gemstones need a little more protection and care.

Sapphires are ranked 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, meaning the gemstone is highly durable and is not prone to cracking, chipping, or breaking. Furthermore, you do not need to be overly careful when cleaning them.

But, this does not mean you can get away from caring for and cleaning your sapphire jewelry. Keep in mind that at least twice a year, you should check your sapphires to ensure the gemstone is not loose in its setting. Additionally, experts recommend storing your sapphire jewelry separately in its own container or in a soft bag to avoid being scratched.

The Mohs Scale of Hardness

Sapphires can also easily be cleaned at home. Even though you can use ultrasonic cleaners and steam with no problem, soap and water will do the trick.

All you’ll need is:

  • A small bowl
  • Soft-bristled bristled toothbrush
  • Warm water
  • Mild soap

Steps to clean your diamond:

  1. Add warm water into a small bowl with some mild soap.
  2. Soak your sapphire jewelry for ± 20 minutes. If your jewelry seems extra dirty, let it soak longer.
  3. Next, brush the gemstone with a soft-bristled toothbrush and rinse the jewelry with clean water.
  4. It’s very important to dry the gemstone with a soft towel thoroughly.
  5. DO NOT allow the water to stay sitting on the gemstone.

Fun Facts About Sapphires

  • Princess Diana’s engagement ring featured a whopping 12ct oval cut sapphire surrounded by diamonds.
  • The Star of Adam is an oval-shaped blue star sapphire, currently the largest star sapphire in the world. Discovered in Sri Lanka in August 2015, it weighs 1,404.49 carats.
  • Sapphires are often considered one of the Big 3 gemstones, accompanied by Emerald and Ruby.
  • Color changing sapphires exist. Yes, we are just as intrigued as you are. These types of sapphires exhibit different colors in different lighting, shifting from blue in the daylight to a bluish purple in the nighttime under incandescent light.
  • Sapphires and the Ruby gemstone have a lot in common, and many refer to them as ‘relatives’. Both rubies and sapphires form the same mineral corundum, a crystalline form of aluminum oxide. Red corundum is called ruby, while all other gem-quality forms of corundum are called sapphires.

Perfectly Trendy: Get On Board With Paper Clip Jewelry

Remember when you were bored in homeroom and you strung together with paper clips from your pencil case to pass the time. Or maybe you gave them to your friends to cement your friend clique. Either way, paper clip jewelry has come a long way! They are now THE trend so get on board! Whether a single strand or layering, paper clips have reached a new level of chic.

Paper clip jewelry

National Paper Clip Day

There truly is a day for everything and paper clips are no different. Created back in the 1800s and popularized in the early 1900s to the shape we know today, the paper clip was originally created to attach tickets to the fabric. Its use to keep paper together was soon discovered and thus it got its current name.

The man who popularized the paper clip’s current shape, Johan Vaaler, was mistakenly thought to be Norwegian. This led students at Oslo University to wear the paper clip during World War II as a symbol of resistance, unity, and national pride. The non-violent symbol was chosen because it represented binding things together.

National Paper Clip Day came into existence in 2015 and continues to be celebrated annually. Join James Allen as we celebrate National Paper Clip Day with our collection of paper clip fine jewelry.

Paper Clip Jewelry: Style Revamped

Whether this trend takes you back to homeroom or makes you nostalgic for the style of the 80’s, the paper clip necklace may be trendy but is anything but new. Created by Coco Chanel and made famous by none other than Jackie O herself, paper clip jewelry is actually a classic masquerading as a trend.

Paper clip necklaces have come a long way since you strung them together as a kid. Available in both yellow and white gold, as plain paper clip chains, and even accented with pearls, paper clip pieces need to be part of your fine jewelry collection. After all, if Jackie O and Coco Chanel approve, how can you go wrong?!

Join these style icons with a paper clip necklace from James Allen:

Why We Love The Paper Clip Jewelry

This industrial-chic style utilizes anywhere from one to multiple strands of paper clips in both slim and chunky styles. You can also jazz it up with a locket or something similar to close the piece, wear it in white or yellow gold, and pair it with both casual and fancier looks.

Traditionally, paper clip jewelry has been necklaces, but now you can find them as bracelets and earrings too! We love the versatility of this little piece of office equipment turned fine jewelry!

This fashion statement works great on its own but we love that it pairs effortlessly with diamond and gemstone jewelry. Any color, any shape, any size, it all works because the paper clip is so adaptable. Grab your own magnificently malleable paper clip pieces today!

How To Wear Paper Clip Jewelry

You already know this style is so amazing that you can wear it alone, layered, and with multiple other styles! But another reason to love this style is that it looks good in both short and long lengths. So whatever your height or body type, there is a paper clip necklace that is right for you! Are you taller? Go for a longer necklace to accentuate your height.

Are you all about that bass?  Go for a necklace that stops just below your neckline. But truly, the right length for you is the one you love best! No matter which length you choose, the paper clip is sure to flatter.

And if you’re thinking, well I can only pair this with other modern pieces, think again! The paper clip look goes great with both modern, classic, and even vintage pieces. You truly have the freedom to express your personal style with this staple.

Layered or a single strand, around your neck, around your wrist, or hanging from your ears, paper clip jewelry is a look that continues to top the trendy charts. It is no wonder that everyone, including countless celebs, are loving this look.

Paper Clip Trivia

The world’s largest paper clip is currently a stainless steel creation standing approximately 30 feet high in Miass, Russia. Before this, a red paper clip memorial in Kiplin, Saskatchewan, stood as the largest paper clip in the world.

The red paper clip stood as a monument to Kyle MacDonald, who traded his way from a single red paper clip to a house. Prior to this, the world’s largest paper clip was in Sandvika, Norway, standing five meters tall as a national monument and a reminder of the paper clip’s role in the country’s history.

Paper Clip FAQs

  1. Is it spelled paperclip or paper clip?

You can actually spell it both ways, but the more common way to spell it is as two words: paper clip

  1. What is the paper clip theory?

Some philosophers have hypothesized that if AI or artificial intelligence were tasked with creating paper clips, it could cause an apocalypse! This is because more and more resources would be diverted to this effort and the AI would ultimately rebuff attempts to be turned off.

Better be safe and stick to paper clip jewelry instead!

  1. What is a paper clip used for?

Paper clips were originally created to attach tickets to fabric and then became famous for what we know today, holding papers together.

Yet they do so much more! Forms of the paper clip are used to hold bags of unfinished chips together, fresher is better for that extra crunch! Or to hold fabric while a seamstress takes in that dress, or as a symbol to attach a document to an email.

The essential technology of the paper clip is unchanged. It is both as classic in its technology as it is in fashion.

Gold paper clip chain necklace
  1. What can I use instead of a paperclip?

You can use various clips, versions of the paper clip, rubber bands, or other binders. Instead of paper clip jewelry you can wear classic style chains or ball chains.

Clip That Paper

As the world moves in a more and more paperless direction, the paper clip continues to remain relevant. The paper clip emoji or symbol is used to indicate there is an attachment or as an indication that you can attach a relevant document or picture by clicking on the symbol.

While paper clips have many uses, our favorite is of course fine jewelry. Holding papers together is well and good, but completing an outfit is the best! So celebrate National Paper Clip Day every day with one of our fabulous pieces and always be on trend.

Game, Set, Bling: Jewelry Inspired BY The French Open

The second Grand Slam of the year, the French Open held at the Roland-Garros tennis complex in Paris is known for its challenging red clay courts. The sport has long been known for its white outfits as classic as its namesake, the diamond tennis bracelet, yet just as tennis has evolved so has its looks….and its inspo.

Read on to find out how you can shine as bright as the La Coupe des Mousquetaires (The Musketeers’ Trophy).

Jewelry Inspired BY The French Open

Chris Evert & Her Flying Diamonds

Tennis legend and winner of multiple French Opens, champion Chris Evert is credited with popularizing the modern-day tennis bracelet. The accepted story is that in 1987 at the US Open, during a long volley, her diamond bracelet broke and flew across the court. Ever since they say, it has been known as the tennis bracelet.

While a fitting anecdote, it’s not quite true. The style has been around since the 1920s and the name since the 1970s. However, Evert certainly skyrocketed its popularity and familiarity, thanks to sporting one as she rose through the ranks to become an internationally known tennis star.

Beyond the court, it is no wonder tennis bracelets and necklaces have fast become a staple of fashion. A simple yet elegant, and timeless design, these pieces are made up of a string of diamonds in your chosen metal (platinum, rose gold, yellow gold, or white gold).

From royals to celebs, these diamonds can be seen everywhere! Perfectly appropriate for a black tie event yet just as stylish with a pair of jeans, there’s nothing diamond tennis bracelets (or necklaces) don’t go with! In fact, many brides sport this classic look on their wedding day.

No matter what style you sport on your special day, a diamond tennis bracelet will add those perfect sparkling touches. See below and go to JamesAllen.com for more options!

More Than Just Red Dirt

There are four types of tennis courts: fresh grass, artificial grass, hard courts, and clay. A clay court has multiple layers: thick gravel, crushed gravel, coal residue, crushed white limestone, and finally, red brick dust. It is this final layer that gives the courts of Roland-Garros their famous red color.

Clay is considered the most difficult surface to play on. While grass allows for fast tennis, the dirt of red clay courts is heavier, causing a slower, more tactical game. Likened to a game of chess, every move on a clay court carries that much more importance. One shot can affect the outcome four to five moves later!

Clay is also favorable to players who have a terrific topspin, a spectacular slice, or a dazzling drop shot. Players who master such skills often get to lift the Roland-Garros trophy as champion.

Want to style the color of these hallowed courts? Go for gemstones with red rubies or get yourself gorgeous garnets. Prefer a diamond? Choose a fancy red colored diamond! The gemstones from the fancy dark group are especially perfect. See below for inspo!

Who Was Roland Garros?

Roland-Garros is not only the tennis complex where the French Open takes place, its name is synonymous with the Grand Slam itself. Named after French aviator Roland Garros, the complex was built in 1928, originally for French players to defend their titles in the Davis Cup.

You might assume Garros was a tennis champion himself, or at least a tennis aficionado, even a great fan, but in fact, he was none of these things. Garros was an athlete in just about every sport besides tennis! So who was its namesake?

Roland Garros

In 1909, Garros went to an air show and it was love at first sight. Garros went on to buy a plane, become a self-taught pilot, was the first to complete multiple daring flights, and finally, became a war hero.

Not enough to have taught himself how to fly, Garros invented the first on-board machine gun in planes. A technology the Germans were able to co-opt to their advantage when he was shot down and captured without time to destroy his invention.

After escaping captivity, his health, including his sight, severely deteriorated, but Garros insisted on getting back in the cockpit. A decision that proved fatal as he was killed in battle in 1918. Years later, a university friend of Garros who was President of the Stade Français, successfully campaigned to have the tennis complex named after his old friend.

The complex’s logo is identifiable to even the most novice tennis fan, and its colors are not random. The green represents the lush trees and lawns around the courts, the white lettering is for the colors of the complex, and red-brown center marks the famous clay courts.

Check out these pieces that are perfect for any match.

Stars To Watch

The French Open is where the stars of tennis from all over the world come to shine. This challenging court brings out the best of the best. This year’s tournament is no exception, with Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Naomi Osaka who are just a few of the familiar names.

Rising stars to watch are Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and American Coco Gauff. Both are young, powerful, and considered to be dangerously talented. Alcaraz, who went pro at 18 and is the youngest player at 19 years old to reach the Madrid Open semi finals, beating fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal. Alcaraz went on to win the entire tournament.

With his whole career ahead of him and a streak as hot as fire, you will not want to take your eye off this young champion.

Right alongside Alcaraz is Coco Gauff. The American is the youngest ranked player at just 18 years old, she is ranked #10 for singles and #15 for doubles, all before she can legally have a drink! Gauff is most famous for beating tennis great Venus Williams when she was just 15 years old!

Gauff is ready to set the tennis world on fire, inspiring young girls everywhere! Want to feel like a champion? Or looking for the perfect gift for your future champion? Check out these options below!

The French Open is the premiere tournament on clay courts. In a complex named after a war hero, riddled with current and future tennis stars, it is a Grand Slam not to be missed! Whether you want to shine as bright as these tennis stars, luxuriate in the beauty of a tennis bracelet (or necklace!), or are looking for a championship-level gift, James Allen has what you need.

Eternity Rings vs. Anniversary Rings: What’s The Difference?

Jewelry that is given in the name of love always has extra sparkle. Eternity rings and anniversary rings definitely fall into this category. Symbolic of life-changing moments and epic love, these diamonds are not just your best friend but remind you of your best friend.

Eternity Rings vs. Anniversary Rings

Eternity Rings vs. Anniversary Rings: What’s The Difference?

While similarly popular, eternity rings and anniversary rings are different in both look and purpose. From the number of stones to the style of the band and the dates they are given, we explain the differences and clear up which ring you should buy and when.

Eternity rings are characterized by a band of uninterrupted diamonds, while anniversary rings feature a row of diamonds on the upper half of the band. Both consistently feature diamonds, which is not necessarily the case for wedding rings.

Whether you prefer sparkles so bright you need sunglasses, or something more muted, James Allen has the right ring for you.

What IS An Eternity Ring?

Eternity rings are available in a variety of diamond shapes and sizes, as well as different metal types, ensuring there is sure to be an eternity ring for you!

You might be wondering, can’t I just use an eternity ring for my anniversary or wedding ring? The answer is yes and no. Eternity rings have come to be given on very special occasions, and certainly, a wedding and an anniversary ARE special occasions!

Eternity rings are given on birthdays, landmark anniversaries (such as at the five, ten, and twenty-year marks), or even graduation!

Eternity rings shine bright with diamonds along with the entire band. The seemingly never-ending diamonds symbolize your never-ending love. And since your love is eternal, an eternity ring does not need an occasion! So feel free to profess your eternal love any day with an eternity ring!

These diamonds are your pledge to your partner. And since diamonds are ALWAYS in style, so will be your eternity ring. This piece of jewelry is not just a momentary trend, you can safely wear your eternity ring for well…eternity! And you will always be en vogue!

Eternity Rings: How To Wear Them

While there are no hard and fast rules, eternity rings are often worn next to the engagement ring and wedding ring sitting on the ring finger on your left hand.

When choosing an eternity ring, you want to keep in mind the style of the engagement and wedding rings. If your engagement ring and wedding ring are more subtle, then you may want to go for ALL the flash of an eternity ring.

And if your engagement and wedding rings are already blinged out, you may want to match that bling with styles such as a pavé or fishtail style, as seen below.

If you like a consistent look, then you’ll want to stick to the same diamond shape. So, if your engagement ring features an Asscher cut diamond, you’ll want to stick with that and choose an Asscher cut eternity ring.

Whatever style you choose, your eternity ring will certainly enhance the radiance not just of your ring finger, but of your whole hand!

If your engagement ring features a gemstone, then you will want to keep that color in mind when choosing the metal for your eternity ring. Not sure which metal goes best with which gemstone? Click here to learn about gemstone engagement rings!

Most importantly! When choosing your eternity ring KNOW YOUR SIZE! Eternity rings are VERY hard to resize due to the entire band being covered in diamonds. Often, it simply isn’t possible.

If the ring is a surprise, click here to get tips and tricks to get your partner’s ring size. Measure their finger in their sleep if you have to! We promise it is easier than trying to resize an eternity ring.

What IS An Anniversary Ring?

Anniversary rings are often given on the anniversary of your wedding and are meant to enhance your wedding ring. They feature diamonds, with a variety of settings, along with half the band, which is available in multiple metals. The metal of an anniversary ring is also chosen to compliment an existing wedding band.

Rings are a VERY popular choice for an anniversary gift. Traditionally, gold is the gift for your first wedding anniversary, so for this event, many couples will choose a white or yellow gold band as seen below:

Whether choosing a five, seven, or nine stone option, you can’t go wrong with an anniversary ring. Enough diamonds for those who want to look ballin’ but not so much for those who prefer a quieter glam.

Anniversary rings are the goldilocks of iced out rings. However many diamonds, whichever metal, James Allen has a ring your partner is sure to love.

How To Wear Your Anniversary Ring

So if your engagement ring and wedding ring are on your ring finger on your left hand, where do you wear your anniversary ring? Literally, any finger you want! One of the beauties of an anniversary ring is that there is no “traditional” finger to wear them on, so choose any finger you like!

Many people do choose to wear their anniversary ring on the ring finger on their right hand (the finger next to your pinky). This allows the ring to both compliment your engagement, eternity, and wedding rings, but stand out on its own as well.

You can also wear your anniversary ring on your left hand on a different finger, allowing your left hand to be dripping in diamonds. Or you can stack your anniversary ring with your engagement ring, wedding ring, and eternity ring, giving your left hand’s ring finger the appearance of a diamond-encrusted wand!

Wherever you decide to wear it, you are sure to enjoy the sparkle that came from a place of love.

St. Patrick’s Day: Get Your Green Glitz On

St. Patrick’s Day: Get Your Green Glitz On

Tradition says that we wear green on St. Patrick’s Day, but it does not say that green can’t sparkle and shine! You do not have to be from the Emerald Isle in order to rock these fabulous pieces. From engaging emeralds to radiant earrings, celebrate with the utmost luxury and style.

Who Was St. Patrick?

There are many legends around this 4th-century saint: that he drove snakes out of Ireland and explained religious doctrine using a shamrock. This slave turned saint was first celebrated in Ireland with religious services.

However, immigrants to the United States transformed this holiday into a largely secular celebration. St. Patrick’s Day is now famous for its fun celebrations, marked by parades and the color green, where both Irish and non-Irish participate in this sparkling shamrock fest.

Going Green

The entirety of March is often dedicated to going green for St. Patrick’s Day. Events can be found all over the country, marked by this signature color.

Green is associated with St. Patrick’s Day for many reasons. Green is a color of nationalism on the Irish flag, it is the color of the shamrock, an Irish symbol, and many believed that wearing green made you invisible to leprechauns.

Wearing green would protect you from these mythical creatures who would pinch anyone NOT wearing the color.

Leprechaun asking are you wearing green?
Dancers for St. Patrick's Day in Boston

Celebrants have come to pinch anyone not wearing green, to remind them of their risk of being pinched by these supernatural beings of Irish folklore.

Green is also the color of spring and the shamrock, and for the last several decades, the Chicago River on St. Patrick’s Day.

Learn more about May’s birthstone and see celebrity-inspired ways to wear the gem here!

The Emerald Isle

Ireland is revered for its lavish green landscapes, earning it its famous nickname. The perfect green hue of emeralds matches the rolling hills of the Irish countryside; it is also quite symbolic.

Green emeralds symbolize spring, rebirth, renewal, wisdom, and are even thought to have healing properties for eyes, ears, and skin. The gemstone is also thought to represent love, faithfulness, and eloquence.

Emeralds are also thought to improve wealth, intelligence, and creativity. Emerald engagement rings symbolize the love that will last forever. It is no wonder this sparkling lush gemstone is the choice of many for their engagement rings.

Trailblazing Women Creating Historic Style

Trailblazing Women Creating Historic Style

Timeless Influence

For a long time, women’s contributions to jewelry were overshadowed, shelved, or ignored. Yet, as in all things, women persevered and their contributions to this wearable art form have shaped and shifted the jewelry landscape.

These brave women rejected the normative ideas of beauty and style and on International Women’s Day, we take this opportunity to honor some of these great women and how they changed the face of this artform.

Bringing Elegance To Everyday Life

Renée Puissant was an heiress in the jewelry world. While her parents, Alfred Van Cleef and Esther Arpels, of the famed Cleef and Arpels, gave her a remarkable foundation, Renée forged her own path and changed the face of jewelry forever.

Acting as the artistic director of this famed house and working with key designers, Puissant wed elegance and practicality, to bring everyday life into the design of fine jewelry.

Noted for her innovation, Puissant was the first to think to have an “end-of-year” sale, offering jewelry at prices less expensive than their normal collection, making jewelry more accessible and “ready-to-wear.”

Every time a diamond necklace is paired with jeans, whenever gemstones adorn leisure wear, and wherever designs as practical as a paperclip are highlighted in fine jewelry, Puissant’s contributions can be seen.

Get yourself some of these Puissant-inspired pieces from James Allen:

Going Global

Carolina Bucci was born and raised in Italy, educated in the United States, and has partnered with celebrities and retailers all over the world. Similar to Puissant, Bucci was born into the business. A 4th generation jeweler, Bucci brought her own style, pushing the boundaries of tradition for her collections.

Despite her heritage, Bucci bravely cut her own path, creating jewelry that has been described as having “effortless elegance” and a modern “sense of luxury.” This boldness helped get her pieces on celebs like Salma Hayek, who famously wore a Bucci piece on her UK Vogue cover in 2003.

Carolina Bucci

Bucci’s influence has helped reinvent how jewelry can be worn. Using bright colors and textures, Bucci’s mark on the jewelry world has only just begun. See below for Bucci-inspired pieces available at James Allen:

Award Winning Legend

Coreen Simpson’s long and storied career did not start in jewelry. This pioneer began as a photojournalist covering everything from politicians to musicians to athletes. As one of a few female photographers regularly covering Fashion Collections in Paris and New York, Simpson got noticed, but not JUST for her photography.

When not on assignment, Simpson designed and created jewelry pieces she could not find. She wore her original pieces featuring black cameos while covering these Fashion Collections.

It was not long before designers started requesting pieces. What followed was Simpson’s signature collection, “The Black Cameo,” an antique-inspired collection featuring black cameos.

Simpson has been honored for her various talents, including her contributions to jewelry and design by the Smithsonian Institute.

Check out these pieces inspired by the coloring and style of Simpson’s signature collection:

Reviving A Golden Artform

Bai Jingyi has been designing jewelry by hand for over 50 years. Born and raised in China, Jingyi has become a master of the ancient art form of imperial filigree inlay, reviving it to create stunning gold pieces.

Jingyi uses her understanding of the ancient masters of this art in order to create new and innovative ways to utilize the technique. Jingyi also teaches others this skill, which has a history of over 2,000 years, because she feels a responsibility to keep this ancient art form alive.

So what exactly is this style? Filigree inlay, a fine metal workman’s technique, weaves and piles gold which has been pulled into thin threads and divided into small sections. It is then organized into a design, using the various sections.

Jingyi loves working with gold because, as she has said, its color is dignified and radiant like the sun, unmatched by any other metal. Filigree inlay demands the highest quality, resulting in luxurious and elegant designs.

Want to shine like the sun? Check out these golden pieces from James Allen:

The Boss Babes Of James Allen

Puissant, Bucci, and Simpson are not alone. They are amongst a myriad of women in jewelry who have broken barriers to create the landscape we know today. From color, to design, to push the accepted boundaries of style, women have and continue to impact the world of jewelry in numerous ways.

Here at James Allen, we are inspired by the great women who lead us every day; from co-founder Michele Sigler, to CMO Shannon Delaney, Art Director Leehe Bok, and Daniela Tarantino, James Allen’s Director of Jewelry.

Along with Tali Gur, our Senior Vice President of Finance and Accounting, and Emmanuelle Glazier, our Digital Product Manager; these amazing women are amongst the army of women at James Allen who inspire every day.

Their leadership and talent help to ensure James Allen fulfills its mission of offering the most prized diamonds and the best selection, using the newest technology.

Fine Jewelry Trends To Look Out For In 2022

Is 2022 the year to reinvent your personal style? We’re taking a good look at what fine jewelry our favorite stylists, celebs, and customers are rocking with confidence. Some of the new trends may surprise you, while others are a blast from the past. Let’s get inspired!

Different fine jewelry pieces laid out on a white surface

Fashion is forever changing, giving us the chance to explore different avenues of our unique style and allowing us the opportunity to leap out of our comfort zones and try something new.

So what boundaries will you be pushing in 2022? Well, we’ve kept a close eye on what fine jewelry designs are growing in popularity and what to watch out for this year! From contemporary takes on classic styles to some beloved trends that are making a comeback, we’re going to show you what’s in and how to rock these jewels right.

Get ready to explore all-new designs in stacking and layering necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets. We’re highlighting the end of minimalist style and saying a happy hello to fine jewelry pieces that go together to create the most amazing impressions of your individual style.

Trend 01: Layering Necklaces & Pendants

In 2022, layering your favorite necklaces and pendants is more about adding different styles, metal colors, and a mix of diamonds and gemstones than it is about adding varying chain lengths.

This trend is also about making your look more personalized. Take your favorite medallion, pendant, or themed necklace, and layer it with other items like solid gold chains to complement your main piece. Take your go-to diamond shape and dare to play around with different diamond cuts this year.

Elongated diamond shapes like oval and marquise appear to be the ones to look out for in 2022, and rightly so, they simply look good on everyone.

Style tip: Pairing a diamond or gemstone pendant with a thin gold chain, along with a clustered necklace or simple medallion is one way to achieve a layered look with colorful and textured dimensions.

Trend 02: Sleek Gold Bracelets

Whether you like yellow gold or not, this traditional metal is here and ready to make your 2022 fine jewelry experience extra golden. Sometimes life can get a little hectic, and keeping your style fresh and playful requires those easy-to-slip-on jewelry pieces. Our recommendation: more is more with a yellow gold layered wrist.

Choose from a variety of uniquely designed cuffs, paperclips, chains, and tennis bracelets, and pile up your wrist to your heart’s content. Stacked bracelets aren’t for everyone, so take the time to work out where your limits are and which bracelets work best for your comfortability.

Not loving yellow gold on its own? Don’t be afraid to mix and match your other metals with your chosen yellow gold pieces. Adding different metal colors is a great way to brighten up your look and showcase your unique style.

Style Tip: Combine multiple cuff bracelets with a gemstone tennis bracelet or dainty diamond bracelet on one hand. Balance out the look with a tennis bracelet or unity bracelet on the other hand.

Trend 03: Hoops & Earring Stacks

This one is a definite favorite. Whether you’ve got multiple piercings on each ear or single piercings, we’ve got two fun ways to get this year’s ideal stacked ear look.

If you’re one of the former, play around with drop earrings or some bold hoops and place them in your lowest piercing. From there, you can get creative and either move up the ear with some cute huggie hoops or studs– remember to play around with different sizes and shapes.

For those of you with single piercings, you can start with hoops or drop earrings and then move up the ear with single cuffs and crawlers.

Style Tip: Put pavé or plain metal hoops in your lowest piercing, followed by diamond or gemstone studs in your second piercing. Stack single or even triple cuffs higher up the ear to complete the layered look.

Trend 04: Stackable Rings

Stacking rings is one trend we see flowing with ease from one year to the next. The exciting part is seeing all the new ring styles, of course. In 2022 we’ve seen chic signet rings grow in popularity and we can see why. These stackable rings aren’t only bold and fun but they’re made to be personal.

From zodiac signs to customized initials and personal motifs, getting your hands on your very own signet ring is one trend you’ll want to hop on, and soon!

Eternity or infinity bands are also making the rounds this year as a fine jewelry favorite, and why not? Who doesn’t love to shine from every angle? Last but not least, don’t forget to add one or two gemstone rings to your collection for those looks that need just a pop of color.

With stacked rings, there are two ways to go about the trend. First, you can choose to stack a single finger with different plain metal bands or other rings of your choice. This works particularly well if you want to add a little more sparkle to your engagement ring

Or, you could achieve that stacked look by taking your favorite ring styles and wearing one on every other finger. We suggest wearing your chunkier rings on one hand and having your more dainty rings on the other to create that ideal balance.

Style Tip: Start with a signet ring on one hand and balance it out with several plain metals or eternity rings on the other. For a single stacked finger, start with a birthstone ring and pair it with plain metal bands or dainty gold rings with diamond accents.

Aquamarine Jewelry feat. the March Birthstone

Hey, what are you waiting for? Aquamarine jewelry, that’s what! Learn more about the meaning behind these March birthstone jewelry pieces and find the perfect aquamarine gift for a March birthday.

March Birthstone

What Is The March Birthstone?

Aquamarine, the March birthstone, evokes the clarity and serenity of ocean waters – literally. Its name comes from the Latin “aqua marinus,” which means “water of the sea.” Aquamarine is a blue variant of the beryl family, which includes other distinctly colored gemstones like pink morganite, golden heliodor, and green emerald. Why the spectrum of hues?

Each color variation is thanks to specific trace mineral and metal content; in the case of aquamarine, iron ions (Fe2+ and Fe3+, to be precise) tint the otherwise colorless beryl to a clear, watery blue. This blue gemstone ranges in color across the spectrum, from pale to deep azure. What’s consistent, however, is this gemstone’s exceptional clarity.

Aquamarine Birthstone Symbolism And History

What better way to celebrate the first month of spring than with a slice of clear blue sky? Aquamarine jewelry symbolizes tranquility, serenity, and good luck. Ancient Greek sailors used to carry aquamarine aboard their ships to ensure smooth journeys at sea – and protect them against drowning. Nowadays, it’s still a symbol of protection, with many people carrying it with them for good health. They’re perfect for those days when you need to shout, “SERENITY NOW!” That’s because the March birthstone has historically been worn in order to soothe the wearer’s temper and to nurture love.

What Is The March Birthstone Color?

Aquamarine naturally occurs in hexagonal facets, which catch a spectacular amount of light. Its blue is exceptionally bright. Plus, it’s a 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, making it a perfect choice for strong, durable birthstone jewelry that stands up well to daily wear. So whether or not you’re a March baby, the aquamarine is a stunning blue gemstone that deserves to be a centerpiece of any jewelry collection.

Celebrity Aquamarine Jewelry

And don’t forget about the celebrity endorsements. Celebs have been rocking aquamarine jewelry since – forever! Lucille Ball flaunted a 40-carat multi-faceted aquamarine ring from Desi Arnaz. Jessica Biel’s now-husband Justin Timberlake proposed with a whopping 6-carat center diamond accented with two aquamarine side stones. And Princess Diana was an ardent fan of the March birthstone. She had a jaw-dropping collection of aquamarine jewelry, whose standouts included pear-cut aquamarine earrings, a huge emerald-cut aquamarine ring, and a pearl and aquamarine bracelet.

Aquamarine is a beautiful accent stone, but it deserves to take center stage in its own right. At James Allen, we believe people don’t wear aquamarine enough! Its “pale blue” hue, despite its name, is anything but lackluster. It’s radiant! Aquamarine’s distinct color, combined with its characteristic light-grabbing hexagonal faces, means that this bright and vibrant jewel is perfectly suited to be worn as a center stone.

So here are just a few of our most eye-catching, aquamarine-forward pieces. Happy March!

Aquamarine Rings

Infinity Aquamarine
Birthstone Ring

This simple aquamarine ring makes for an exceptionally sweet gift for your favorite March birthday. It leans into the marine theme with a rippling white gold band. Can you even look at this birthstone ring without dreaming of ocean surf crashing on a white sand beach? No, no you can’t.

East-West Aquamarine
and Diamond Ring

This ring is the definition of understated glitter. An elegant oval-cut aquamarine is set in the sideways “east-west” position, which though less common than a vertical setting, is not at all less lovely. Two tiny diamonds, nestled in the crooks of the split shank, beautifully set off the brilliance of the center aquamarine.

Yellow Gold Aquamarine
Birthstone Ring

There’s a reason that the simple pleasures in life are enjoyed more often. And this simple pleasure comes in yellow gold! This is a piece that’s classic enough to match with any of your existing rings, perfect for stacking, and will handle anything your life throws at it. The double-floored basket allows light to hit this 0.25-carat round-cut aquamarine center stone from every angle: top, side, and bottom. Meaning, this delicate blue gemstone will positively glow on your finger.

Slender Aquamarine
Birthstone Ring

Place this slender, goes-with-anything 0.10-carat aquamarine birthstone ring on your finger for some extra confidence before you head out the door in the morning. Its thin band makes it ideal as a stacking ring. Mix and match it up with other metals, stones, and styles for an impressive ring stack.

Aquamarine Stud Earrings

Aquamarine and
Diamond Stud Earrings

These round 0.5 carat aquamarine studs get their extra pop of sparkle from two delicate diamond pavé halos. Their rounded-back lotus mountings are extremely comfortable, allowing you to look fabulous all day without even noticing you’re wearing them.

Aquamarine Birthstone
Stud Earrings

These earrings bring out the sparkle in any eye, especially baby blues and gorgeous greens. The gentle blue of the gemstones perfectly complements cool-toned eyes. Wear aquamarine on your lobes whenever you want to bring out the marine undertones of your irises.

Aquamarine Necklaces

Oval-Cut Aquamarine
Birthstone Necklace

This necklace is all aquamarine. Simply set in white gold, this oval-cut gemstone is the star of the show. And simply put, aquamarine jewelry makes for an unforgettable March birthday gift. This pendant’s split bail ensures that its center stone lies flat around the wearer’s neck. Pretty and stable, this necklace is utterly wearable.

Aquamarine Floating
Halo Necklace

Why be shy about it? Your aquamarine is stunning and you know it. This necklace shows off this blue gemstone as it deserves to be seen – front-and-center and surrounded by a floating halo of diamonds! This is a pendant necklace that’s covered in sparkle. And it’s not afraid to flaunt it.

Ocean Blues

Producing images of the sky above and the sea below, blue represents loyalty, wisdom, and sincerity. The color also brings to mind ideas such as freedom and intuition. Like water, which covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface, with ocean’s holding almost 100% of the Earth’s water, blue has a myriad of shades.

Some of blue’s many shades can be found in fancy blue colored diamonds, as well as the gemstones aquamarine, blue sapphires, blue topaz, and tanzanite. Its many shades allow it to create varied looks; from incredibly luxurious to sparkling fun, and everything in between.

Sun Rays

When you think yellow you think sunshine, happiness, and warmth. Symbolizing youth, energy, and optimism, yellow can be found in the gemstone citrine, a fancy yellow colored diamond, and of course, yellow gold.

The sun provides solar energy and the light and heat that makes life possible. Showcasing the brightness of the sun, and the yellow of a sunflower, these citrine and yellow sapphire gemstone pieces, yellow pearls, and yellow gold fine jewelry are giving us life!

Fancy yellow colored diamonds are all the rage. It is no wonder more and more celebrities are being spotted sporting fancy yellow colored diamonds. With their timeless, gorgeous, and unique style, fancy yellow colored diamonds are a perfect choice to create a jaw dropping engagement ring.

The February Birthstone: Amazing Amethyst

Don royal purple with the February birthstone: amethyst! This unusually-hued gemstone will make any wearer into an instant queen.

February Birthstone

Amethyst jewelry is the go-to purchase for February birthdays and Valentine’s gifts. The February birthstone is stunning yet graceful, rewarding those bold enough to wear it with plenty of turned heads!

What is the Birthstone for February?

It’s amethyst! Amethyst is a violet type of quartz, the crystalline mineral silicon dioxide. This is a great jewelry gemstone, as it’s not only gorgeous, but also sufficiently resilient to withstand day-to-day wear. It rates a 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, indicating that it’s pretty difficult to scratch. Amethyst is a jewel that’s ready to keep up with your active lifestyle.

The History of Amethyst

Amethyst isn’t only good in the form of birthstone jewelry. This gemstone takes its name from the ancient Greek belief that it could protect its bearer from poison and drunkenness: a- (not) + methysko (intoxicating). Not only was amethyst worn as talismanic jewelry, but it was also carved into cups to prevent over-tipsiness.

With all due respect to the ancient Greeks, we disagree. Amethyst is positively intoxicating!

How to Style Amethyst

Purple can be a tricky color to style, and a trickier one to style well. When it comes to amethyst, it looks best when paired with certain colors of clothes.

  • similar shades of purple
  • neutral shades: black, white, gray, silver or gold.

As for who can wear amethyst, everyone’s in luck. Amethystian purple hedges both cool and warm tones, and as such it complements any complexion. Jewelry-wearers of the world, rejoice! This is your sign to rock amethyst jewelry.

Who Wears Amethyst?

Perhaps because of its royal connotations, but most certainly because of its beauty, amethyst is a solid favorite among red carpet celebrities. And as you can see, stars like Diane Kruger and Zoe Saldana are also fans of pairing their jewels with purple fabrics.

Diane Kruger- Amethyst February Birthstone
Zoe Saldana - Amethyst February Birthstone

The Value of Amethyst Birthstone

Amethyst is valued primarily by the quality of its color rather than its carat weight. Meaning that you can score a heftily-sized gemstone for a much more reasonable price than other jewels.

Amethyst Stone Meaning

The February gemstone is also rife with meaning. In the past, Tibetan Buddhist monks considered it holy and carved prayer beads from it and English royalty reserved it for themselves due to its sacred properties. And amethyst became the February birthstone thanks to the legendary St. Valentine, who donned an amethyst ring as he performed illicit marriages; this eventually led to the modern-day practice of gifting amethyst jewelry on Valentine’s Day. Modern-day lore claims that it is a powerful protective stone with cognitive and emotional stimulating properties.

Amethyst Rings

Deck your digits with a purple ring or two (or three), so you can punctuate every gesture with lavender. Choose a small stone for everyday wearing and stacking, or pump up the purple and go crazy with an oversized amethyst cocktail ring.

Petite Amethyst

“Perfect in every way. I chose this for my 9 year old daughter, and she was beyond bedazzled with it. The metal and the gemstone are beautiful.”
– Johanna T.

Picture It: Inspired Looks From the Golden Girls

The Golden Girls were ahead of their time in every way! From the subject matter to the guest stars to the fashion, Rose, Blanche, Dorothy, & Sophia were the hippest grandmas on the block!

The golden girls

There are so many reasons why the Golden Girls was both a critical and commercial success. The surprisingly progressive show, which earned 11 Emmys (out of almost 70 nominations), resonated with viewers because it always felt real and relatable.

Whether it was Sophia’s stories that reminded you of your grandmother, Dorothy’s exasperation at always being the responsible one, Blanche’s outlandish outfits and sexual escapades, or Rose’s Midwestern innocence; the Golden Girls were the grandmother, mother, sister, and friend everyone wanted.

Thank You For Being A Friend

The Golden Girls laughed together, cried together, annoyed each other, and most importantly, ate pound after pound of cheesecake. Everyone remembers the ladies gathered around that infamous table in the kitchen, eating late into the night, helping each other through their problems and learning lessons, with the help of each other and, of course, a nice rich cheesecake.

No matter how big the fights, no matter how serious the problem, there was always a cheesecake, and a story, there to guide the women to the right solution. What started as roommates, became deep friendships, and were ultimately, a family.

The golden girls around the table

Jewelry as timeless as Sophia’s stories, as individual as the characters, and that shines as bright as the actors:

“Let me tell you a story. Picture it, Sicily…” — Sophia

14K Rose Gold Cushion Halo Morganite And Diamond Necklace (6x6mm)

“We have Maalox and estrogen. How many junkies have gas and hot flashes?” — Dorothy

18K White Gold Diamond And Cultured South Sea Pearl Art Deco Drop Earrings (11-12 Mm)

“It’s like we say in St. Olaf: hergenbargenflergenflurfennerfen.” — Rose

14K White Gold Beaded Amethyst Necklace

“Crying is for plain women. Pretty women go shopping.” — Blanche

Emmy Worthy

The show won 11 Emmys in its lifetime, in no small part to its progressive subject matter. The show tackled everything from ageism, medical gaslighting, addiction, LGBTQIA issues, and much much more! The show was not afraid to go there, which is why it still resonates with us today.

The actors and the show, rightly earned each Emmy and nomination. Almost 30 years since it went off the air, the Golden Girls continue to make us laugh, make us cry, and show us that no matter what life throws at you, you can get up and thrive.

Sophia showed us coming back stronger and more sarcastic than ever after her stroke, Dorothy finally found happiness after suffering a cheating husband for years, Blanche learned that she is more than just her sexiness, and Rose learned that she is not just a naive Midwestern mouse.

Emmy worthy - The golden girls

Shine as bright as Rue, Bea, Betty, and Estelle…and their Emmys, with these fabulous gold necklaces:

14K Yellow Gold Mini Elephant Necklace

“My mother used to say: the older you get, the better you get. Unless you’re a banana.” — Rose

14K Yellow Gold Bead Dangle Necklace

“People waste their time pondering whether a glass is half empty or half full. Me, I just drink whatever’s in the glass.” — Sophia

14K Yellow Gold Triple Strand Puffed Heart Necklace

“Nobody ever believes me when I’m telling the truth. I guess it’s the curse of being a devastatingly beautiful woman” — Blanche

14K Yellow Gold Interlocking Rings Necklace

“[To Sophia] You’re a furry little gnome and we feed you too much.” — Dorothy

Who WERE The Golden Girls?

Each of the women was famous in their own right before coming to the groundbreaking program. Betty White, better known as the “First Lady of Television,” had her own show on NBC, appeared on numerous game shows, starred in the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and appeared in numerous movies and TV shows. An avid animal lover, White was married to longtime love Allen Ludden, for almost 20 years before his untimely death.

Bea Arthur won a Tony for her role in the Broadway musical Mame, had her own TV series: Maude, and made multiple appearances in TV shows, movies, roasts, and plays. Arthur embraced her role as an LGBTQIA icon and was long considered an LGBTQIA rights activist.

Rue McClanahan worked with Arthur on Maude; she also appeared on Mama’s Family, alongside White. Prior to her roles on television, McClanahan was a stage actress. McClanahan was also socially conscious and was an activist promoting animal rights and vegetarianism.

Estelle Getty was a stage actress for many years, gaining experience in the Yiddish theater and attempting standup in what was then-known as the borscht belt, before finally achieving success at age 62. Showing younger actors that success is always possible, and to never give up, Getty was a fighter both on and off the stage, working as an activist for LGBTQIA issues, AIDS causes, and senior issues.

Who were the golden girls?

In the picture above, each actor and character’s individual personality shine through.

Sophia’s trademark pearl earrings are a staple at any age:

Timeless Life Lessons from the Golden Girls

The Golden Girls were a group of women whose circumstances led them to be roommates, unlikely friends, and closer than family. They showed us there is nothing that a good cheesecake can’t fix.

The many lessons of the show continue through today; whether it’s Blanche’s confidence, Sophia’s honesty, Rose’s kindness, or Dorothy’s selflessness, the show, like the actors themselves, was ahead of its time. And of course, the women taught us that as you age, you only shine brighter.

Cool Blue Topaz: The December Birthstone

Shine through the winter with blue topaz, the December birthstone.

Celebrate the month of December with its icy blue birthstone. Though topaz comes in a range of colors, the blue variety is the wintry birthstone. From pale blue to a deep, sapphire-like azure, topaz’s tones are perfect for any December birthday or simply any cool-hued adorer.

December Birthstone: Blue topaz

What is Topaz?

Topaz is a silicate mineral that in its purest state is totally colorless. It’s the trace minerals that give it such a vibrant range of colors, from deep blue to pink, orange, and even purple.

The index of refraction for topaz is somewhat low (around 1.62), meaning that their many facets sparkle less than gemstones with a higher rating. Topaz tends to look best in oblong cuts that complement its naturally-occurring columnar shape. For that reason, topaz often appears in jewelry in baguette-, pear-, and oval shapes.

Topaz is an ideal jewelry stone thanks to its high rating on the Mohs Hardness Scale. It scores an 8, which is near the maximum solidity of 10 (a grade claimed by the rock-hard diamond). Practically, this means that topaz is quite impervious to daily wear in all situations. There’s no need to fret about scratching or chipping topaz; it will accompany you throughout your day, no worries.

One of the cooler characteristics of Topaz is its pleochroism: depending on the angle that light hits topaz’s facets, the gemstone may appear to vary in color. This gives blue topaz an incredible variety of aquatic shades.

The History of Topaz

In the past, the most famous variety of topaz was actually yellow. The Bible mentions topaz; although it probably referred to a different yellow stone, the name topaz went on to refer, generally, to any yellow semi-precious stone. Eventually, in the mid-1700’s, topaz started referring to the mineral we now know and love.

The most popular type of topaz nowadays is the blue variety. Though blue topaz occurs naturally, the popularity of blue skyrocketed in the 1970’s when gem treatments were developed. Gemologists discovered that they could take colorless topaz, expose it to certain types of radiation, and then heat it up. The result was a gorgeous blue gemstone whose popularity immediately shot through the roof.

Famous Topaz

By far the most famous topaz in existence is the Marbella Topaz, a whopping 8,225 carat faceted blue topaz currently owned by the Spanish government. Yep, that’s a comma – not a full stop. How big is 8,225 carats, you ask? Well, it’s akin to wearing a grapefruit on your finger. A bit heavy, but oh-so breathtaking.

Cate Blanchett has been known to sport blue topaz on the red carpet – a gemstone that perfectly highlights her icy blue eyes. By wearing her topaz jewelry as close to her eyes as possible in the form of earrings, she maximizes the blue-on-blue effect.

And onto another (C)Kate! Kate Middleton’s circular topaz and diamond earrings have made multiple high-profile appearances, and seem to be one of her favorite pieces. The cool tone highlights her green eyes, and the bright white jewelry metal pops against her paler skin.

How to wear topaz

Blue is a beautiful catch-all. If you love blue, topaz is for you, since it comes in every shade – from pale aquamarine to a dark sapphire, topaz has it all.

Pale complexions: if you have a pale complexion, dark blue topaz will look stunning on you. Especially topaz set in white jewelry metal like white gold or platinum.

Dark complexions: complement your dark complexion by choosing an eye-popping pale topaz set in warm gold.

Blue & green eyes: Choose topaz in the same shade as your irises to make your baby blues (or green) really pop.

Outfit coordination: topaz looks lovely when paired with its complementary color, orange. Practically, this means you can increase topaz’s visual impact by wearing golden or amber-color fabrics alongside your gemstone.

December Birthstone Gifts:
Blue Topaz Rings

Blue topaz jewelry is perfect for December birthday gifts, 4th, and 19th wedding anniversary presents. Not only is it more affordable than other blue gemstones like sapphire, but it also features a unique variety of hues. And why blue topaz rings? They’re easy to wear, will stand up to anything you put them through, and will always be close at hand for you to admire.

December Birthstone Gifts:
Blue Topaz Earrings

Topaz has a history of mind-strengthening powers. Well, at least according to a host of old European folklore. An English superstition states that topaz can cure insanity, while in the Middle Ages it was worn to protect against the evil eye and mind-weakening curses. If you agree with our predecessors, wearing blue topaz earrings close to your noggin will keep you up to speed.

December Birthstone Gifts:
Blue Topaz Necklaces

Statement pieces? Oh yes. Topaz’s relative affordability means that you can go big on the carat weight without going over budget. Plus, a blue topaz pendant completes any outfit with a vivid burst of color. Whether you give it as a present, or you adorn and adore yourself, topaz is a winning December purchase.

Gorgeous Garnets: The January Birthstone

Time to be well-red! Find the perfect jewelry gift with garnet, the January birthstone.

January Birthstone

Start the new year off by shining in garnet red. Garnets get their name due to their resemblance to pomegranate seeds, the name derives from the Latin granatum, meaning seed. While garnet comes in multiple hues, red is the most popular color, and perfect for a January birthday…or any birthday!

What Is The January Birthstone?

Garnets can be found in mines and streams, where the water has worn away the rock and exposed the gem. Garnets can be found in green, yellow, and even colorless, but its vibrant and deep red is the most popular color.

While the garnet we are most familiar with is the gemstone found in fine jewelry, it can also be mined for its industrial abrasive version, which is used to polish glass and metal.

Garnet Birthstone Facts

The sparkle from garnets is so extraordinary it is often described by gemmologists as fire. The best sparkle can be seen in soft, romantic lighting, such as candles.

The hardness of garnets is not as impressive as their sparkle and should be handled with care. Rating between 6.5 and 7.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, out of a maximum of 10, garnets are still quite strong.

Garnet Birthstone Symbolism

Garnets are thought to bring blessings, love, wellness, friendship, and devotion to those lucky enough to be born in January. It certainly worked for Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.

Prior to marrying her now-husband, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, Kate was gifted a gorgeous ring with her garnet birthstone, as well as pearls, her now-husband’s birthstone. The ring was a sign of the Prince’s commitment to his now-wife.

Garnets are always a great choice because as the epitome of affordable luxury, they make for a great birthday gift….or anniversary, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, or just a day ending in a day!

Kate Middleton isn’t the only celebrity sporting garnet, check out some other famous faces wearing this gorgeous gem! Kristen Bell and Sofía Vergara have both rocked luxurious garnet earrings.

Garent Birthstone History

Once believed to offer protection from poison and even nightmares, garnets have a long and storied history.

Garnets have been found in the tombs of pharaohs in Egypt and in ancient Persia, where only kings were allowed to own or wear the gem.

In ancient Rome, garnets were typically worn by noble patriarchs, in the form of carved signet rings. They also believed the gem provided protection to travelers and that sparkles were a sign of impending danger.

Children in ancient Greece thought they were protected from drowning by the gem and in ancient China, it was believed that the gems were the incarnation of a tiger’s soul. The Navajo use the gem to bring luck and protection. Navajos also believe, similar to ancient Romans, that garnets bring protection to travelers.

Numerous famous historical figures are thought to have been adorned by this famous gem, including Plato and the King of Saxony, who is said to have had a garnet of over 465 carats!

How to Wear Your Garnet

The deep red brilliance of garnets makes it a beautiful choice to wear as earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets. They can glamorize an easy-going day look, accessorize a night on the town, or compliment a black-tie outfit.

The hues of garnet are complementary to all skin tones, allowing everyone to achieve that royal look.

Garnets look exceptionally spectacular when paired with black or white outfits, however, they also go great with more neutral tones like deep greens and browns.

January Birthstone Gifts: Garnet Rings

Garnets are the perfect January birthstone. As the gem of love, they are an ideal romantic prelude to Valentine’s Day. Garnets are often given as signs of intimacy and romance, and their rich color makes them a meaningful and gorgeous gift to receive.

January Birthstone Gifts: Garnet Earrings

Garnets are said to have healing properties, in addition to their protective ones. Many people believe that the gems bring peace, passion, and can help cleanse and balance energy. These are just some of the many reasons that garnets have retained their popularity, from ancient times to today.

January Birthstone Gifts: Garnet Necklaces

Garnets affordable luxury and fiery red color make them a popular choice. This gem, which can symbolize both love and friendship, makes a considerable and personal gift to a romantic partner, good friend, or family member.
