What Is a VVS Diamond?

Are you wondering what a VVS diamond is but not sure where to start? This handy guide will help you decide if a VVS diamond is right for you.

VVS Diamond

You’re probably here because you’re thinking about getting engaged – yay you! An engagement is an incredibly exciting milestone, but let’s be honest: Buying a diamond can feel overwhelming sometimes. If you’re in the market for an engagement ring, you might be asking yourself: “what is a VVS diamond and why in the world does it matter?”

1. Let’s Talk Basics: What Is A VVS Diamond?

To get a little technical: VVS is an acronym for “Very Very Slightly” – which refers to a diamond that is very, very slightly included. An “inclusion” is the official term for a diamond’s internal characteristics and a “blemish” is the term for a diamond’s external characteristics. These can include characteristics like feathers, crystals, twinning wisps, clouds and surface graining. They will determine how much light is able to pass through a diamond, which will in turn affect the stone’s light return – arguably, the best part of buying a diamond. Who doesn’t want a diamond that sparkles

On the clarity scale, VVS diamonds are one step below “flawless” diamonds. They are always clear of any imperfections to the naked eye and usually have no visible imperfections under 10x magnification. At James Allen, we use up to 40x magnification technology, so you can be sure you’re seeing each diamond with the same detail and ease as you would in a jewelry store.

2. VVS1 vs VVS2 Diamonds

VVS diamonds fall into two categories: Very Very Slightly Included 1(VVS1) and Very Very Slightly Included 2 (VVS2). VVS2s are slightly more included than VVS1s, and the nature of these inclusions is usually different. For example, VVS1 diamonds tend to have tiny imperfections towards the side of the diamond, as opposed to the center. Imperfections on the side are preferable to those in the center because they do not affect light performance as much.

VVS1 diamonds are generally more expensive than VVS2 diamonds. Because VVS diamonds fall just under flawless diamonds (FL and IF), they’re a great option for people who want a practically flawless diamond without a flawless price tag.

3. VVS vs Flawless Diamonds

One of the main reasons to choose a VVS diamond is that it often will look just like a flawless diamond but saves you a nice chunk of cash.

Let’s compare the two diamonds below. The one on the left is 1.02 carats, H color and IF clarity. The one on the right is 1.00 carat, H color and VVS1 clarity.

Can you spot any differences between the two diamonds?

Both diamonds are roughly the same size, as the .02 difference will not be perceptible to the naked eye. Both diamonds are the same H color, which faces up white. Neither has any fluorescence. Both have excellent symmetry and polish grades. Both are certified by GIA.

In short, the only real differences between these two diamonds are their clarity and price tags. There is roughly a $600 difference between them, which is a result of the clarity grade jump.

If you’re looking to maximize your budget for a high-clarity diamond engagement ring, VVS diamonds are a great choice. The difference in price could get you any of the following engagement rings:

4. Which jewelry pieces are most suitable for a VVS diamond?

VVS diamonds are great choices for higher carat diamond engagement rings (above 3 carats) and step cuts (emerald and Asscher, or square). They also allow you to buy a setting that really showcases the center diamond, as opposed to settings that are better at hiding inclusions (for example, this bezel setting). Settings that have fewer prongs, less metal, as well as  tension settings are ideal for showcasing VVS diamonds, like the ones below:

Petite Pavé Engagement Ring

Rope Solitaire Engagement Ring

Tapered Half-Bezel Engagement Ring

Pinched Bar Pavé Engagement Ring

If you’re looking for fine jewelry that features smaller diamonds, like tennis bracelets, there’s no need to go for VVS clarity. You can stick with SIs or VSs since inclusions are harder to spot in smaller diamonds.

5. Wrapping Up

A VVS diamond is a great choice for someone who is looking for a flawless-looking diamond, without the flawless price tag. VVS diamonds are intended to be the pièce-de-resistance of any engagement ring, so you might want to show off your stone with a setting that puts the diamond front and center.

BRILLIANT TIPS FOR DIAMOND CARE

Take Care of Your Diamond Cleaning

No need to bring your diamonds in for cleaning – here are the DIY methods to keep your diamond engagement ring and diamond jewelry looking just like new:

1. Soak and Scrub

Everyone can use a good bubble bath, and your jewelry is no exception! Take care of your diamond rings and jewelry with a little TLC, making sure no gems come loose.

Soak your jewelry in a solution of mild dish soap and warm water for a few minutes. Afterward, carefully scrub the metal using a soft cloth, cotton swab, or gentle toothbrush, then rinse.

2. Get Intense Shine

For extra shine in your yellow gold, rose gold ring, or platinum jewelry, you can follow up the mild dish soap soak with window cleaner. Do not use window cleaner with white gold – the rhodium plating won’t be able to handle such harsh chemicals. Limit this soak to one minute at a time.

After the window cleaner, dip your ring into the mild dish soap solution, rinse it with warm water, then dry it completely.

3. Shield the Shade

You can use ionic cleaners to clean most diamond jewelry, but the electrical current may mess with the hue of certain gemstones. Consider other cleaning methods for colorful gemstone engagement rings and gemstone jewelry

Take Care of Your Diamond Insurance

1. Insure Your Diamond Jewelry

Better sparkly and safe than sorry! It might feel weird to prep for the worst when you’re still perfecting the filter on your ring selfie, but trust us – make sure to insure your jewelry right away in case it gets lost or stolen. Find out how much your homeowner’s and renter’s policies cover, then look into additional policies like Jewelers Mutual.

2. Choose the Right Policy

Make sure you know what you’re getting into! Here are some good questions to ask while you’re researching diamond jewelry insurance policies:

  • Do they offer a deductible or discount if you have a home security system?
  • Does the policy cover you fully if the item is damaged or lost overseas?
  • Is the diamond jewelry covered at the full replacement cost, and will they give you a cash settlement or a replacement item?
  • Which appraisal reports does the insurance company accept, and how often do you need to provide them?

When shopping for a diamond online, it’s a requirement to be able to examine the stone close up and from every angle. At JamesAllen.com, we take this a step further, allowing you to spin diamonds in 360° HD at up to 40x SuperZoom.

However, not every diamond shopper is a diamond expert. Even with the inspection tools at your fingertips, how do you know what you should be looking for?

That’s where our Real-Time Diamond Inspection comes in! Browse the diamonds you’re interested in alongside a professional by scheduling a free online diamond consultation with a non-commissioned certified gemologist. Ask questions, mark points of interest on the screen while chatting with your diamond expert in real-time, and review everything from the specs to the grading certificate together.

Our gemologists can:

  1. Find you the best diamond for your budget
  2. Point out important diamond qualities you might miss on your own
  3. Save you money
  4. Guide you toward the unique diamond that suits your lifestyle
diamond inspection stacy tasman

When Can I Use the Real-Time Diamond Inspection?

This feature is pretty much available around the clock. If you don’t see the blue “Real-Time Diamond Inspection” button on your diamond’s page, click the pink speech bubble icon in the bottom right corner of the page to start chatting with a representative. Then, request to use the inspection feature. In no time, you’ll be consulting with a professional about your specific diamond!

How Does the Real-Time Diamond Inspection Work?

We’ll go into more detail below, but here is the rough plan of action:

  1. Select a loose diamond from the gallery
  2. Click on “Real-Time Diamond Inspection”
  3. Inspect your diamond in extreme detail

That’s why we’ve created the first-ever Real-Time Diamond Inspection; a personalized consultation with a bona fide diamond expert. It’s hands-down the best way to get to grips with your diamond.

Step 1: Find Your Diamond

Before you embark on a diamond consultation, it’s important to narrow down your options. When you come with a few diamonds and questions prepared, you’ll get the most out of your conversation with a gemologist.

How should you go about it? If you’ve got a good idea of what you want, search JamesAllen.com for loose diamonds that catch your eye. If you’re unsure, check out our site for comprehensive information regarding the 4 C’s: diamond cut, diamond clarity, diamond color, and diamond carat weight.

If at any step in your research process you feel like you need some help deciphering the ins and outs of the 4 C’s, chat with one of our legendary customer service representatives!

Step 2: Start Your Diamond Inspection

To start your Real-Time Diamond Inspection, simply click the Diamond Inspection button next to any loose diamond on our site. If you don’t see the blue button, you can click the speech bubble icon to start chatting.

You’ll be instantly connected with one of our certified gemologists, who will share their screen with you. No scheduling, no additional software. Just you and your diamond consultant discussing everything you need to know. And because our experts don’t work on commission, you can be sure they’re giving you fair, impartial advice.

Step 3: View EVERYTHING About Your Diamond

  • View Your Diamond’s Inclusions

JamesAllen.com lets you inspect your diamond up close, but sometimes you need a bit of help interpreting what you’re seeing. To this point, our Diamond Inspection feature is particularly helpful when it comes to identifying inclusions.

If you’ve been doing your homework, you will probably have come across the term inclusions. These are the tiny imperfections that occur naturally in diamonds and can affect their overall beauty. While some inclusions are visible to the naked eye, others require up to 40x magnification to be seen. Using SuperZoom technology, our experts are able to pinpoint any inclusions and mark them directly on the image of the diamond.

  • View the Grading Certificate

When you purchase a diamond from JamesAllen.com, it comes with a certificate from one of the top three grading labs: GIA, AGS, or IGI. This document contains the diamond’s technical specifications as well as its grading information – all very important stuff.

Now, admittedly, all this technical jargon can seem pretty intimidating at first glance. I mean, what even are grading scales?!

Once our experts break it down for you, you’ll see how metrics such as cut, color, clarity, and carat determine a diamond’s quality and price. They can even show you how to tell two technically identical stones apart and identify which one is superior. In fact, the Diamond Inspection feature allows you to compare up to four diamonds simultaneously.

Step 4: Make Your Selection

Seen a diamond that merits closer inspection? Click the Diamond Inspection button next to any loose diamond on our James Allen site to begin your free consultation. Utilize More Ring-Shopping Tools!

Double Halo Engagement Rings: Twice the Ice

Why settle for a single halo when double halo engagement rings offer twice the sparkle?

When it comes to matters of sparkle, more is definitely more. More light play, more fireworks, more… POW! Double halos allow you to supersize your sparkle by creating the illusion of a larger stone. They use a pretty nifty trick of the light that could end up saving you $$$!

Highs & Halos: Double Halo Engagement Rings

If you’re unfamiliar, traditional halo engagement rings surround the center stone with an outer ring of smaller diamonds or gemstones. Light from these peripheral stones reflects off the center stone, creating a wonderful larger-than-life aura.

14K White Gold Triple Row Pavé Halo Engagement Ring

Double halo engagement rings, as the name suggests, are framed by not one but two outer rings of sparkle. This gives them twice the visual impact, much like the jaw-dropping beauty of a double rainbow.

Thanks to their seemingly larger appearance, double halos are a popular choice for the budget-conscious shopper who wants to wow without the ‘ow!’

Celebrity Doubles

Most celebs are used to seeing sparkle wherever they go. They see it in the camera lenses of overzealous paparazzi and they see it in the jewels they wear. Double halo engagement rings sparkle twice as hard as classic solitaires; enough to satisfy even the most fabulous of appetites.

Community star Alison Brie must’ve been seeing double when her then-boyfriend, Dave Franco, presented her with a dazzling double halo. The vintage-inspired sparkler, with its round center diamond, is one ring we hope the GLOW actress won’t be wrestling in!

Oscar winner Natalie Portman’s sparkler is as dramatic as her acclaimed turn in Black Swan. The antique round (old mine) cut diamond ring and a surrounding pavé-set double halo are ethically sourced and the platinum band is recycled metal, in line with Ms. Portman’s eco-friendly ideals. Get Closer to her style with an exquisite James Allen lookalike set with a certified conflict-free center diamond.

High School Musical alumna Ashley Tisdale graduated with double honors; a cushion-cut center stone framed by a double halo of micropavé diamonds. This showstopper of a ring features smaller diamonds along with the band, significantly upping the sparkle factor. Get twice the shine with the above James Allen lookalike.

You can choose to surround your center stone with two diamond halos or opt for contrasting colored gemstones. Finally, select a setting that matches the wearer’s personal style: solitaire bands offer a sleek, modern aesthetic, whereas decorated bands possess more of an old-world charm. If it’s the maximum shimmer you’re after, you can’t go wrong with a pavé band.

Choosing a Diamond: Be in the Glow

Precious advice for those who will soon be choosing a diamond for their engagement ring.

How to choose a diamond

We recognize that gleam in your eye! No, we’re not talking about the way you look at your SO (although that is adorable). If there’s one thing capable of making a person’s eyes light up like that, it’s diamonds. Those pretty little stones you know nothing about, but are determined to get a good deal on.

And where better to start than our men’s FAQ series? In this first installment, we look at choosing a diamond; from understanding the 4Cs to getting the most bling for your buck.

Choosing a Diamond: Foresee the 4Cs

It’s impossible to talk diamonds without mentioning the 4Cs: cut, color, carat, and clarity. Together, these all-important characteristics influence a diamond’s quality and value. They are your new best friends. Get to know them. Go have a beer with them. Whatever you have to do.

    • Cut – This refers to both the diamond’s shape and how effectively it returns light to the viewer’s eye.
    • Color – This is generally something you want to avoid in a diamond, unless it’s a fancy color diamond (more on that later).
    • Carat – This is the unit of measurement by which diamonds are weighed and sold.
  • Clarity – This refers to how clean a diamond is and whether it has visible imperfections.

When in doubt, start with a diamond cut. This is the one area you should never compromise on as it determines how sparkly the stone is.

“I want my ring to sparkle less.”
– No one, ever

If you have to compromise on anything, let it be diamond clarity. However, try to avoid going below a VS1 clarity grade; anything lower would be visible to the naked eye.

Choosing a Diamond: Appearances Can Be Gleaming

Let’s be real for a moment, shall we? No one buys a diamond engagement ring for their SO without wanting to impress their socks off. It’s the ultimate declaration of your love, so of course you’ll want to go all out and snag the biggest, most sparkly rock you can afford.

While celebs are known for flashing ridiculous amounts of sparkle, you don’t always need to pay top dollar to enjoy those megawatt flashes. If you’re on a budget, there are a number of ways to make even a modest diamond appear larger than it actually is. Sneaky, we know!

One way to get more bling for your buck is to opt for an undersized diamond. Now, that might sound counterintuitive – how can a smaller diamond appear the same size as a larger one to the naked eye? By choosing a diamond that’s just shy of the standard industry cutoff points, you could save yourself a pretty penny, without compromising on sparkle. Consider a 0.9 carat diamond and a 1 carat diamond with comparable specs. On the surface, both stones appear to be virtually the same size, but look closer at the price tags and you’ll see a considerable saving on the smaller stone. Similar carat weight, less cash. Booyah!

14K White Gold Round Split Band Diamond Halo Engagement Ring

Another way to appear more sparkly is to choose a setting style that accentuates the center diamond. Halo engagement rings, for example, surround the center stone with an outer ring of smaller diamonds or gemstones. These peripheral stones reflect light off the center stone, giving it a greater presence on the hand. Halo engagement rings come in single and double halo varieties, depending on how far you want to glow… er… go.

For more sparkle-maximizing tips, read up on how to make your diamond engagement ring look bigger.

Choosing a Diamond: Appraise Where It’s Due

Choosing engagement ring diamond appraisal

A diamond appraisal is necessary if you want to get your ring insured – which, btw, you totally should! It differs from the GIA or AGS diamond grading certificate that comes with your ring in that it provides a dollar estimate rather than the technical info.

At JamesAllen.com, we offer a complimentary insurance evaluation on any diamond engagement ring valued at $1,000 or higher. If you prefer, you’re welcome to get the diamond independently appraised as well.

Choosing a Diamond: Color Outside the Shines

James Allen's Yellow diamond

If your head isn’t already spinning at 360° like our diamonds, we’re about to throw another curveball at you: fancy color diamonds. While colorless diamonds have traditionally been the objects of our affection, their colorful cousins are steadily gaining popularity. And because stones at the vivid ends of the color spectrum are quite rare, they’re more valuable too.

When choosing a diamond, pay close attention to your partner’s personal style. If they’re the free-spirited, artistic type, a diamond in their favorite color could make for an exceptionally meaningful gift. Read more about fancy color diamonds.

Pear Shaped Diamonds with Fruitful Flare

Pear shaped diamonds the only part of your engagement you’ll want to go pear shaped!

Pavé Halo Shank Diamond Engagement Ring

Imagine if Eve had picked a pear in the Garden of Eden instead of that darn apple. She would’ve stood out from all the other women (had there been any other women) and been hailed a trendsetter. Still, it’s never too late to make amends and pear shaped diamonds are the perfect sparkle offering.

Love is in the pear!

Pear Shaped Diamonds: Ripe for the Picking

So, what makes a pear a pear? The unique shape is achieved by combining two other diamond cuts: round brilliant and marquise. At one end, you have the gentle curves of a round cut; at the other, the pointed charm of a marquise. Best of all, it retains much of the sparkle of a round cut, despite not conforming exactly to that shape.

Grab yourself a piece of this low-hanging fruit!

A Diamond Beyond Compear

If further pearsuasion is needed, choosing a non-traditional diamond shape like pear can actually save you money! That’s right; because the demand for pear is lower than for round brilliant, it tends to offer better value. A pear shaped diamond could save you as much as 25% compared to a round cut of the same size and quality. How sweet is that?!

Hot take: Pair your pear with a solitaire for a classic setting that’s both affordable and offers maximum light return through the top of the stone.

Pear to Spare

Thanks to their elongated lines, pear shape diamonds tend to look larger than other shapes of the same carat weight. On the other hand, they gently accentuate slender fingers and make shorter fingers appear longer and slimmer.

Who Rocks Pear Shaped Diamonds?

2018 is shaping up to be the year of the pear! Paris Hilton (or should that be Pearis Hilton?) got the party started back in January when she said yes to a juicy 20-carat pear shaped diamond engagement ring. Of course, she’s not alone in her penchant for pear. Other personalities include Ariana Grande, Kaley Cuoco, Cardi B, Sophie Turner, Victoria Beckham, Zoe Saldana, Katherine Heigl, and Margot Robbie.

Pavé Halo Shank Diamond Engagement Ring

What is a Pear Shaped Diamond?

When purchasing a pear shaped diamond, it helps to know which attributes to look out for. That way, you can avoid pulling an Eve and picking the wrong piece!

Cut To minimize the undesirable ‘bow tie’ effect commonly found in pear shaped diamonds, ensure the diamond cut is as symmetrical as possible. It’s more aesthetic plus it returns more light and sparkle back to your eyes.

Color The pointed end of the diamond doesn’t reflect light nearly as well as the round part, so it’s more likely to reveal the stone’s true color. To avoid those ‘warmer’ yellow tones, opt for a high grade on the color scale (no lower than G).

Clarity As with color, any inclusions are more visible if they occur at the pointed end of the diamond, where there are less sparkle and scintillation. You’re better off going for an ‘eye clean’ diamond with a clarity grade of VS2 or above.

Carat The carat weight you choose will largely depend on your budget, but this is not the be-all and end-all. An increase in carat size will often appear negligible, yet raise the price significantly. Far more important are cut, color, and clarity in determining a diamond’s overall beauty.

What to Know About Heart Shape Diamonds

Anyone who has cut out a paper heart knows that symmetry is essential to the heart diamond’s shape. For a diamond with a distinct heart shape, choose a gem with symmetrical halves as well as a sharp cleft in the cut.

Comfort Fit Engagement Ring

Heart diamonds also tend to show their shape better in larger sizes – if you want a more pronounced heart form, consider a larger carat size for your stone.

Antique Bezel Engagement Ring

Like other fancy shape diamonds (ex. pear and oval cut diamonds), heart shaped diamonds feature the “bow tie effect”: there is a space in the center of each heart shape diamond that does not reflect light. The better cut the heart diamond, the smaller the bow tie effect.

If eyes are the window to the soul, then marquise cut diamonds are the sparkly window dressing. These eye-shaped beauties, with their curved sides and pointed ends, give the appearance of a watchful guardian protecting the wearer from a life less lustrous.

Seize the marquise!

Marquise Cut Diamonds: Ahead of the Curve

Like the gentle outline of oval cut diamonds, but want to score some extra brownie points with your SO? Point your attention to marquise cut diamonds, which are blessed with not one but two points — one at either end.

Typically set in a ‘north/south’ orientation, the marquise cut makes fingers seem longer and more slender. Its elongated shape also creates the illusion of a larger stone, carat for carat, especially when set with round or pear-shaped side stones.

What to Know About Marquise Cut Diamonds?

Okay. So, you’ve set your heart on a magnificent marquise for your main squeeze. Now what? To ensure you’re getting the most attractive stone for your money, consider the following:

Go Deep as Your Love Choose a diamond that hasn’t been cut too shallow, otherwise light could leak through the stone diminishing its fire and brilliance.

Get Symmetrical Both endpoints of a marquise cut diamond should be perfectly aligned; otherwise, they can throw the stone off balance once it’s mounted in the setting.

Beware the Bow Tie Marquise cuts tend to produce a darkened area at the center of the gem that resembles a bow tie. A well-polished brilliant cut diamond should hide this undesirable effect.

Block Off the Old Chip Like any diamond cut with exposed corners, the ends of a marquise cut need securing. V-tip prongs are widely considered to offer the best protection from chipping.

How to find an engagement ring

How to Buy an Engagement Ring

You’re about to embark on one of the most important journeys of your life – proposing. But before you even think about proposing you have to first find the right engagement ring. This handy guide on how to buy an engagement ring will show you how it’s done, and our customer service team of dedicated diamond professionals is here to help you every step of the way.

Engagement rings for women

GUIDE: HOW TO BUY AN ENGAGEMENT RING

Step 1: Decide a budget

Love doesn’t have a price on it, but engagement rings do. You certainly don’t have to (and shouldn’t) abide by silly antiquated rules like spending 2 or 3 months’ salary on the engagement ring, but it is important that you decide on a price that you’re comfortable with. When advising customers on how to buy an engagement ring, we always tell them to know how much they wish to spend first. You can rest assured that you’ll be getting the best possible quality at James Allen for your budget, and we offer payment options to help you make the engagement ring purchase.

Step 2: Choose a metal type

The next step in our how to buy an engagement ring guide is choosing the metal type. There are four metal types to consider: Platinum, white gold, yellow gold and rose gold. They each have their advantages. You can learn about choosing the right metal type for your engagement ring here:

Step 3: Select an engagement ring setting

If you’d prefer, you can start with finding the diamond or gemstone instead – the choice is yours. Browsing through engagement ring setting options can seem overwhelming, but it’s not as difficult as it seems. Determining her personality type and style will help you decide what type of ring to look for (solitaire, halo, vintage, etc.).
