Your Guide To Morganite Jewelry & Engagement Rings

Find out everything you need to know about morganite engagement rings and fine jewelry, from the stone’s history to its romantic symbolism.

Morganite Jewelry

What Is Morganite?

Morganite is a pink semiprecious stone and belongs to the beryl family, along with emerald and aquamarine. This stone is a stunning diamond alternative and comes in hues from orange to coral to salmon to subtle pink, although you’ll notice light peachy pink is the most common.

This stone is relatively free of inclusions, given its desirable clear appearance. Morganite is essentially colorless, but the presence of magnesium creates its pink effect while the presence of iron impurities gives a slight yellow or orange hue, combining for the iconic peachy color.

Morganite Origin & History

Morganite was first discovered on the coast of Madagascar in the early 1900s. It is currently mined mainly in Afghanistan, Brazil, and Madagascar. It was first named pink beryl- but later renamed by a famous gemologist, George Frederick Kunz who wanted to honor his patron, John Pierpont Morgan.

Morganite Characteristics

Morganite owes its beautiful salmon pink color to the presence of manganese. Usually, Morganite is eye clean, which means that no inclusions are visible to the naked eye at a distance of about 15 cm.

Primarily subtle and pale in color, some of the larger specimens demonstrate deeper saturation. Skilled cutters can also elicit richer colors by cutting the stones a little deeper than the norm.

When he first discovered it, George Kunz conducted several different experiments with morganite to examine all of its unique properties. One such characteristic is its intense red fluorescence upon exposure to x-rays.

Morganite Symbolism

With its soft pinkish hue, morganite is often associated with innocence, sweetness, romance, and love. In general, morganite is connected to the heart and is attuned to the heart chakra– talk about a perfect engagement ring center stone. Morganite is believed to bring healing, compassion, and promise to those who wear it.

Morganite is said to open its wearers to unconditional love while dissolving the ego. Though not an actual birthstone, morganite is said to be an excellent stone for fine jewelry and non-traditional engagement rings.

How Valuable is Morganite Jewelry?

Morganite fine jewelry is often scarce, which is why many avid collectors are on the lookout for high-quality morganite pieces.

A morganite carat can cost between $200 and $400 and remains an affordable option for couples who want this stone as the center of their dream engagement ring.

When shopping for morganite fine jewelry or your morganite engagement ring online, remember that cut, color, carat, and clarity are essential for consideration.

Morganite Necklaces

A morganite pendant necklace will be a stunning gift for anyone who has a refined sense of style. This gemstone’s peachy radiance is even more captivating when paired with a sparkling halo setting.

Should You Buy a Morganite Engagement Ring?

Morganite has become a popular choice for brides looking for an alternative to the traditional diamond. Of course, the primary allure of morganite is its pink and peachy hues. If you’re attracted to color gemstones, it comes as a refreshing alternative to a colorless diamond or a beautiful and affordable alternative to a pink diamond

Morganite stones offer intense brilliance and sparkle and are low-cost which makes them perfect as budget-friendly engagement ring options. Because the gemstone is fairly soft, it’s important to have your morganite stone set in a four or six-prong setting to avoid unwanted chipping.

Your Guide To Rose Gold Engagement Rings

Ever wondered, “what is rose gold”? Read on for everything you need to know about rose gold engagement rings—plus, some of our favorites you can shop right now only at JamesAllen.com.

Rose Gold Engagement Rings

Rose gold engagement rings are a unique alternative to traditional metal ring options like classic white gold or yellow gold rings. They’re the ideal choice for brides who want a ring that is elegant yet gorgeously distinctive.

Rose gold engagement rings and wedding bands for women have been climbing the popularity ranks for quite some time now, especially among many celebrities like Blake Lively and Leighton Meester. It’s no wonder rose gold rings are finding their way onto the wishlists of more non-traditional brides everywhere around the world.

What Is Rose Gold?

Let’s start with the basics. Rose gold is a blend or alloy of gold, copper, and silver. It is the copper that gives rose gold its gorgeous, characteristic pink hue. The more copper in the alloy, the pinker it looks. While there is a common misconception that rose gold is not “real gold” because it’s a mix of metals, in reality rose gold is real, but it’s just not 100% gold.

The History Of Rose Gold

It is believed that during the 19th century, rose gold was first used by czar jeweler Carl Fabergé when he was tasked with creating ornate Easter eggs as gifts for Russian tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II’s families.  At the time, rose gold was known as Russian Gold because of its historical importance. However, this unique pink-hued metal didn’t become fashionable until around 1924, when Cartier used rose gold in his iconic trinity ring. So yes, rose gold is not new to the jewelry world.

Are Rose Gold Rings More Expensive?

One of the most common misconceptions of rose gold is that it tends to be more expensive than yellow or white gold. But the truth is, this is not the case. Just like an engagement ring, rose gold engagement rings vary in price. Essentially, it all comes down to the carat size, weight of the gold content in your ring, gemstones and diamonds and other details such as the setting or complexity of its design. Rose Gold is made with the same purity of gold as Yellow and White Gold, so the color of the metal of your ring will definitely not affect its overall price.

Besides Diamonds, What Gemstones Suit Rose Gold?

Apart from stunning, radiant diamonds there are also many colored gemstones that look amazing with rose gold engagement rings. These include, morganite and pink sapphires.

The warm, pink hue of the precious metal complements the feminine shades of pink. And if you’re looking for something extraordinary, a gemstone and diamond combination often works very well too.

What Type Of Bride Would Rose Gold Be Most Suitable For?

If you’re an adventurous bride-to-be looking for an engagement ring that is not just unique but also features a feminine, soft and romantic touch then opting for a rose gold metal is exactly what you need to stand out from the crowd. An engagement ring should not just be a symbol of your love but also needs to be a reflection of your personal style.

Whether you’re after something vintage or a ring more chic and contemporary, rose gold has the flair to complement any kind of setting and style. While tradition suggests that yellow gold best suits ‘cool’ skin and white jewelry suits ‘warm’ skin tones, the rosey pink hues rose gold looks equally beautiful on every skin tone.

Are Rose Gold Engagement Rings A Popular Choice?

The answer is, YES! Rose Gold has become more and more popular throughout the years. With a variety of styles and designs to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find your perfect dream ring. The blushing pink hues and the warm romantic feel have captured the hearts of many brides to be. Plus, if you’re wanting a metal that is a lot more subtle than yellow gold, rose gold is exactly what you need.

Rose Gold Symbolism

Rose gold is delicate, whimsical, and full of deeper meaning, and its color is unlike any other jewelry metal. It is often associated with passion and is considered to be a symbol of love and romance because of its lavish pink shade. The warm and rich metal also portrays a sense of style and elegance but also shows off your sense of fashion. The pinkish tones also signify femininity, although rose gold is not only intended for women.

How Do I Clean My Rose Gold Engagement Ring?

Caring for rose gold jewelry is very straightforward and easy to clean. Because of its copper content, rose gold doesn’t tarnish and instead develops what’s called a patina. A patina is a sheen that develops on certain metals over time due to oxidation, which gives the metal a gorgeous vintage look. Essentially, rose gold will stay beautiful with very little maintenance.

To care for your rose gold diamond engagement ring, you can simply soak it in warm water with a mild soap for a few minutes before giving it a light scrub with a very soft toothbrush or a cloth. To avoid damaging your ring please do not use any type of vinegar solution.

Use a mixture of lukewarm water and a small amount of dish soap to soak the ring for 1-2 hours. After that, gently use a toothbrush to clean the crevices and dry with a clean towel.

Is Rose Gold Durable?

While pure gold is soft, rose gold is slightly different when it comes to durability as it contains copper. Jewelry experts maintain that copper is one of the most durable metals, so adding it to gold makes for a sturdy alloy that can easily withstand daily wear. There is a good reason as to why it’s used in industrial construction and engineering – this is tough stuff! So, rest assured, rose gold is long-lasting and will look beautiful in years to come.

What Diamond Shape Is Best For Rose Gold?

Just like all metals, the type of diamond you choose for your rose gold engagement ring is important. Experts believe that diamonds such as emerald and Asscher cut should generally be avoided with rose gold bands. These diamond shapes tend to draw light from the bottom of the diamond, meaning, a rose gold band could easily make a colorless diamond appear to have a rosy tint.

Of course, there are restrictions when it comes to diamond shapes for rose gold rings but the most preferred shapes tend to be round, pear, heart and oval shaped diamonds

Unique Engagement Rings for the Non-Traditional Bride

Unique Engagement Rings for the Non-Traditional Bride

Although you can never go wrong with a classic solitaire engagement ring, there are many brides who dream of an engagement ring that screams unique. We along with many brides-to-be are completely smitten with the non-traditional engagement rings trend, and we think it’s here to stay!

Unique Engagement Rings for the Non-Traditional Bride

Diamonds may be some girls’ best friends, but the truth is they’re not for everyone. Like your personal style, many women want to stand out with a unique or unconventional engagement ring. Although you can never go wrong with classic solitaire or pavé band, today those wanting to veer off the traditional path have no shortage of gorgeous engagement rings to choose from.

As we are loving the move toward gemstone engagement rings and alternative options, we’ve pulled together some of our favorite non-traditional diamond engagement ring styles. From contemporary settings to dazzling gemstones and everything in between, these rings will definitely be the statement you’re looking for.

Shape Shifters

Did you know that diamonds come in a variety of beautiful shapes? While round and princess cut diamonds are amongst the most popular shapes for engagement rings, this may not appeal to every person but luckily there are many other shapes that are stunning and full of sparkle.

If you’re thinking of going for something super unexpected with a ring with an extreme wow-factor you can choose from diamond shapes like pear, emerald, cushion, marquise, heart, Asscher, or even radiant cut.

Your “Something Blue”

Thanks to old traditions that have been passed down many generations, the color blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. It is believed that a bride should have  “something new, something borrowed, and something blue” to bring her good luck on the big day.

Luckily nowadays there are so many lovely ways to incorporate this custom into any wedding. Whether it be a small headpiece, beautiful nail polish, statement shoes, or an elegant blue James Allen engagement ring.

If your desired shade of blue is sapphire, you will be guaranteed a one-of-a-kind engagement ring as no two sapphires are alike. Not only are sapphires commonly associated with royalty but they also have a symbolic meaning. Known as the ‘wisdom stone’, sapphires are said to protect against negative energies, attract blessing and indeed enhance wisdom.

So, why not be bold and different and choose a sapphire engagement ring? The perfect balance between classical beauty and contemporary expression

Another fabulous blue hue is Topaz. With its dazzling array of colors and luxe clarity, Topaz is also becoming an increasingly popular choice for engagement rings. Also known as the December birthstone, blue topaz is often perceived as a gift of eternal and committed love. It is also believed to symbolize loyalty, deep emotional attachment, and communication.

Blue topaz engagement rings are not only feminine, contemporary, and great for everyday wear, but they are also more affordable than diamond engagement rings.

Vintage

Vintage engagement rings capture the perfect mix of “something old” and “something new”. No matter the style or design that captures your heart, vintage-style engagement rings certainly make a stunning, non-traditional choice. With intricate detailing and distinctive elegance, you as a non-traditional bride will be guaranteed a timeless engagement ring.

A Pop Of Color

Colored gemstones can be a gorgeous alternative to a classic diamond engagement ring. In fact, gemstone engagement rings have been popular amongst many celebs and royalty for quite some time.

Not only do we love this magnificent trend, but stars like Elizbeth Hurley, Megan Fox, Kate Middleton, and Victoria Beckham are rocking beautiful gemstone engagement rings. In fact, colored gemstones have re-emerged as a popular choice for the modern bride.

At James Allen, we stock a stunning selection of gemstone engagement rings to choose from.

The Look: Girl With a Pearl

Much like other unique engagement rings, pearl engagement rings carry a lot of symbolism and meaning. Pearls are believed to signify purity, generosity, knowledge, and sincerity which are all important in a relationship with your partner.

Pearl engagement rings are now being worn by women of every age as they are not just a beautiful choice but are also totally timeless and chic. Whether you choose an exquisite antique design or a modern ring setting, there is definitely a variety of gorgeous choices when it comes to pearl engagement rings.

Stand Out From The Crowd

Choosing an engagement ring that matches your one-of-a-kind personality is actually a lot more simple than many people think. Another alternative for non-traditional brides is opting for a different metal type, such as rose gold. Rose gold engagement rings are not only trendy and super popular right now but they are also available in a variety of styles and designs that are sure to make a distinctive statement.

Ring Anatomy 101: All You Need To Know

Looking to buy an engagement ring but not sure what all the different bits and bobs of a ring are? Let us walk you through the anatomy of a ring so you can find the one that fits you best!

Various loose parts of engagement rings

The beginning of your engagement ring shopping doesn’t need to feel daunting. Maybe you’ve already got a clear idea of what you want, and you’re just unsure of all the ring terminology. Or, you have no idea which ring style is best for you or your partner and you need some help from the experts. Whatever side of the equation you’re standing on, we’re here to guide you.

There are many different ring settings to choose from, and each setting has multiple design features. The good news is that once you know what these settings are, the ring buying process will be that much easier and, dare we say, exciting. Knowing the difference between these parts can help you and your partner understand exactly what you want, not to mention, that if you’re going to custom design the ring yourself, you’ll need a little lesson in ring anatomy 101.

Worried you might still be confused? We’ve got plenty of fun infographics to help pinpoint each area of a ring’s anatomy. Let’s get started!

Engagement ring styles

The Different Parts Of A Ring

Center Stone

The center stone of the ring refers to the diamond or gemstone that sits at the center of the ring setting. The center stone is usually the largest stone on the ring and traditionally features a round-cut diamond or gemstone. However, each engagement ring can be fitted with the center stone of your choice, not excluding fancy-shaped diamonds or gemstones like oval, pear, emerald, princess, and marquise cuts.

Basket

A basket is a prong setting that has traditional prongs extending up from the base of the metal band and a horizontal band that connects the prongs to provide enough tension to hold the center stone in place. This creates a basket shape for the diamond or gemstone to sit in.

Bridge

The bridge of a ring refers to the area underneath the head of the ring that sits on the wearer’s finger. This area typically needs to be comfortable with no sharp edges. It’s hardly seen once the ring is on, however, it can feature a small diamond or gemstone accent, or patterned engraving.

Gallery

A functional and decorative feature, the gallery of a ring is located between the basket and bridge on the ring’s head. The traditional engagement rings often featured open galleries, allowing the bottom part of the center stone to be visible. However, on 3 stone rings the gallery might also include these added accents.

The setting refers to the entire ring and the way added stones have been set on the ring. You’ll find there are various setting types to suit your unique style. But not all settings are created equal. Some settings are simple while others are more complex. Whichever setting you choose will determine how the final look of your ring, but more importantly, your chosen setting will affect the cost and maintenance of it, too. Let’s dive into the different types of settings.

  1. Solitaire

Simple and timeless is how we’d describe a solitaire setting. It’s effortless in design, as a plain or two-toned metal band with a single center stone. Solitaire engagement rings can feature a variety of different prong settings and the band itself isn’t limited to a single design either.

  1. Pavé

The French word pavé, meaning to pave stones, might help you to remember this ring setting. A pavé setting refers to small stones featured along the line of the band, like cobblestones. It’s a delicate and often favored setting because it offers the ring-wearer some extra sparkle to complement the center stone.

  1. Channel Set

Channel set settings are side diamonds embedded into a grooved channel of the band. Think of it as if the rows of diamonds are cemented between two walls of metal. Light can still reflect off the diamonds but they’re as exposed as side diamonds on pavé settings.

  1. Three Stone

A three stone setting usually features a center stone with two diamonds or gemstones sitting flush on either side of it. What’s fun about this setting is that the two additional stones don’t necessarily need to be the same diamond shape as the center stone.

  1. Side-Stone

More sparkle for your center stone is how we like to think of side stone settings. A side-stone setting can include any number of additional stones along with the band of the ring. These stones can be cut and placed in any number of beautiful ways and truly bring out the brilliance of the center stone.

  1. Tension

Looking for a setting that can be admired from a mile away? That’d be a tension setting. This setting uses compressions to hold the center diamond in place, giving the appearance that the diamond is suspended in midair. The setting is usually made from a thick metal band and is sure to stand out in a crowd.

  1. Halo

The halo setting is one that typically encircles the center stone with round pavé or micro-pavé diamonds. The small accent stones can make the center stone appear larger. A halo setting can take on the same or a different shape than the center stone.

  1. Bezel

A bezel setting uses no prongs and instead is designed with a rim of metal holding the center stone. The surrounding metal only leaves the upper portion of the diamond or gemstone visible. This setting is perfectly designed to keep the center stone safe and secure.

Prongs

The prongs on a ring’s head are small metal projections or claws, either rounded, pointed, or v-shaped. Prongs extend up the ring’s basket and are used to secure the center stone in place and hold it there. There are various types of prong settings, the most popular for engagement rings being four or six prongs – enough to leave the diamond visible and able to reflect light and sparkle.

Side Or Accent Stones

Side or accent stones are the stones that flank the sides of the center stone and are attached to the shoulders or the shank of the setting. Accent or side stone can encircle the entire ring in an eternity style or just decorate a small position of the ring. These accents aren’t limited to diamonds but can be tiny gems, too, of any fancy shape.

Shoulder

Naturally, the shoulder helps to keep the head of the ring up. It’s the area where the shank and the ring setting meet and can be adorned with small diamond or gem accents.

Shank

Shank is more commonly known as the circular metal band that goes around the entire finger. A ring’s shank can take on many unique designs, from, twisted, curved, flat, and even split shank. As with most of a ring’s anatomy, the shank can also feature small diamond or gemstone accents. When choosing a ring it’s important the shank is comfortable and amplifies the appearance of the ring itself.

Our Top Engagement Rings For Same-Sex Couples

When it comes to popping the question, anything goes. But what about the ring? Something as personal as an engagement ring needs some extra thought, and that’s where we come in. Join us as we explore the perfect engagement ring duos for same-sex couples!

Engagement Rings For Same-Sex Couples

We’re grateful that love is anyone’s game, and each player gets their own unique story. What better way to express your personal love story and style than with your engagement ring?

But first, the usual questions. Who proposes to who? Are you both jumping on the trend of wearing engagement rings together? If yes, are you going the cute route with matching rings?

Overwhelmed? Don’t stress. There’s really no right answer on how to propose or what engagement ring to get. All we can do is inspire you.

Here’s a look at our top engagement rings for same-sex couples.

Engagement Rings For Same-Sex Couples

Same-Sex Engagement Rings For Women

Now, it’s important to remember that anything goes with your unique proposal and the same should be said about your engagement ring. Here are a few categories we’ve outlined about engagement rings for same-sex partners.

Traditional

For a classic proposal, one person would have a desire to be proposed to while the other would like to be the one who pops the question. If you and your partner fall into this category you’ll both appreciate the more traditional approach.

Traditional rings are anything but boring. Classic solitaire engagement rings are a style that will be around forever. What we love about these rings is that you can pair this setting with just about any diamond shape and metal color. You can also opt for different prong settings to suit your individual style.

Solitaire engagement rings with different metal colors and styles

In the past, it was customary for women to wear the engagement ring as men would be the ones who typically proposed. However, for same-sex couples, there are really no hard and fast rules about this.

If you’d like to keep it within the traditional standard then your partner to whom you proposed to will be the one sporting the diamond ring you picked especially for them. Then you will get your wedding band once you’re married.

Side stone engagement rings

Dual Proposals

In today’s society, it’s super normal to have the marriage talk as a couple and to decide together that it’s time to get engaged. That being said, it’s not completely uncommon for same-sex couples to propose to one another. In fact, it’s a growing trend that both partners will wear an engagement ring and we’re absolutely loving it!

So what kind of engagement ring should you and your partner choose if you both plan to propose and be proposed to?

We’ve got two answers. First, you could always do matching rings to make the moment even more memorable. Picking out matching rings is a process the two of you won’t easily forget. Also, knowing your partner has a ring exactly like yours will always remind you of them when you catch a glimpse of your sparkler.

If you don’t want to match completely, you can always keep them similar by choosing the same type of ring setting and then adding in your preferred center stone of choice.

Two pavé engagement rings with different styles

Second, you can both buy rings that showcase your significant other’s personal style and preferences. Going with this option means that you both have more options to choose from in terms of ring styles and also customization. Say you love halo engagement rings but you’d prefer a gemstone center stone instead of a traditional diamond- your partner can make that happen by designing your ring online.

P.S. If you love the idea of creating a customized ring from scratch, try out our ring studio for the ultimate ring designing experience.

Women's gemstone engagement rings

Same-Sex Engagement Rings For Men

Men’s engagement rings are a little more tricky than womens since they’re only just now becoming increasingly popular. That’s not to say they aren’t a thing yet, because they very much are on the rise. It’s more of a question of their style and what that’s supposed to look like.

Do men’s engagement rings keep up the concept that a diamond or gemstone needs to be involved in the ring’s design, or does anything go?

We’d like to think it’s up to the individual. And for same-sex couples, the sky is the limit to the type of engagement ring style you wish to present your partner with. If you want to keep it traditional- diamonds really are for everyone! One of the most popular styles are comfort fit rings with added diamond or gemstone accents.

Men’s Eternity Rings

Diamonds already symbolize love, commitment, and above all, strength. Now when they’re fitted in an eternity ring, your partner will know you’re in it for the long haul!

Eternity rings can be customized to suit your significant other’s personal style, from diamond cut preference to favorite metal color choice. The best part, they’ll be shining from every angle.

An eternity ring is also the perfect style for matching same-sex couples’ engagement rings as they represent not only the time you’ve already spent together, but the long life you’ll enjoy together as a married couple.

Men's diamond and gemstone engagement rings

Alternative Metal Men’s Engagement Rings

Gold may be the most popular metal but alternative metals like tantalum offer a more rich and masculine color which is extraordinarily appealing.

Tantalum rings for same-sex couples offer durability, comfort, and it’s a low-maintenance metal. This metal is also a budget-friendly option as it’s cheaper than platinum and hypoallergenic. As an engagement ring option, they’re perfect for easy customization.

  1. Which hand do we wear our rings on?

Same-sex couples have been known to wear their rings in a number of different ways. From the traditional way with the ring worn on the left hand, to both partners wearing their rings on their right hands. In the end, you should decide on the hand that is most comfortable for you.

  1. Should we shop together for engagement rings?

You can shop together if you’ve both planned the style of your engagement rings or you’d like to be there to choose your own. Of course, if you want it to be a surprise you can always drop a hint to your partner and hope for the best.

The Best Engagement Ring For Each Diamond Shape

Have your eye set on a particular diamond shape and you are looking for the best mounting to make it shine? Read on for the best engagement ring setting for any diamond shape.

5 different shapes of Diamond engagement rings

Over time, popularity shifts between which diamond shapes are going to offer the most finger space coverage and sparkle. No matter your preference, there’s a unique diamond for everyone and yearly engagement ring trends to help sway you.

You can choose one of two ways to design your custom engagement ring at James Allen: 1) you can start with a setting and then choose a diamond to match, or 2) you can start with a diamond and then choose a complementary setting.

If you’re the latter, this is your how-to guide. Each diamond shape has its own unique qualities and it’s crucial to know how to best show them off.

Deciding Your Diamond Shape

If you’re looking for an elongated shaped diamond for your favorite engagement ring setting, it’s sure to provide two elegant optical illusions.

Because these shapes look larger than they really are, they are quite easy on your wallet. You can definitely spend less and still get a sizable diamond to flaunt. In fact, a 1-carat oval diamond has 10% more facets than a 1-carat round brilliant diamond. And the more facets your diamond boasts, the more it glitters.

  1. These diamonds look larger than their carat weight.
  2. They seem to lengthen the wearer’s finger.

How should you complement the length of a marquise, pear, or oval shape in your ring setting? Tapering.

Ring shanks that widen and taper into the diamond, whether via split bands or side stones, provide an elegant transition that also emphasizes the stone’s breadth.

Marquise Cut

The pointiest diamond shape of them all isn’t for the faint-hearted. This boat-shaped diamond is bold and growing in popularity as a must-have for 2022. Marquise cut diamonds are known for their historical heritage and go back centuries — once being modeled by royalty.

This cut is not only perfect for most diamond engagement rings but compliments other gems like sapphires, rubies, and emeralds.

Our recommendation: Marquise cut diamonds shine their brightest when centered in a bypass shank pavé setting.

Bypass Pavé Kite-Set Engagement Ring

“if the value of the ring was measured in beauty alone it was worth every penny” -Adam S.

Pear Cut

Go asymmetrical! This shape combines the best of two worlds: round brilliant and marquise. The curve of a round diamond gradually leads into the pointed elegance of a marquise. A pear cut diamond can offer more finger coverage and give the added illusion of a larger diamond than a round cut diamond with the same carat weight.

Our recommendation: Pear cut diamonds are best set in a north-south orientation and receive that “wow” factor when complemented by side-stone ring settings.

Laurel Leaves Engagement Ring

14K Rose Gold Laurel Leaves Diamond Engagement Ring

“I am really happy with how my ring turned out. This band is dainty and classic looking. It pairs perfectly with my pear diamond.” -Elvia D.

Oval Cut

Oval cut diamonds are a popular shape with many advantages.

  1. They have no sharp corners, meaning they’re less prone to catching on clothes.
  2. They have all the beauty of the classic round diamond with the perks of a lengthened shape.
  3. Each diamond has a unique length-to-width ratio, meaning you can find a unique shape that suits your style.

Ovals that are longer are considered more elegant, while wider shapes display less of a bow-tie effect. Generally, the appearance of a bow-tie shadow in an elongated shape is considered less desirable, but it’s really up to the personal taste of the wearer. Finally, this diamond has no sharp corners, making it a better investment if you’re afraid of chipping.

Our recommendation: 2022 has deemed oval cut diamond solitaire engagement rings a fan favorite. Hop on this growing trend and slip on a classic in yellow or rose gold.

Classic Split Shank Solitaire Engagement Ring

14K Yellow Gold Classic Split Shank Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring

“This ring is comfortable, the band is thin and petite just how I wanted it. The diamond is SOOOOO SHINEY!!!! Of course the pictures cannot do it justice. Pure perfection here.” – Kylee B.

Square Shaped Diamonds For Engagement Rings

Squarish shapes are some of the oldest diamond shapes, and they still hold that classic charm. The following four shapes benefit from angular settings that mirror their straight edges.

Lines, squarish side stones, and edged bands all enhance their angular facets.

Princess Cut

Princess cut diamonds, like round cuts, typically contain 58 facets that function to maximize light dispersion for optimal fire and brilliance. All of these facets pack a massive amount of light into a neat little square.

Our recommendation: Princess cut diamonds are for the bold and royalty needs a strong entourage— so the only setting worthy of this firey brilliance is a side-stone setting with stunning diamond accents.

Blossom Tree Engagement Ring

14K Rose Gold Blossom Tree Diamond Engagement Ring

“The rose gold blossom band is wonderful and with the diamond they all glitter and sparkle together so much, that it can’t help but draw everyone’s attention!” -Stephen L.

Emerald Cut

An emerald cut diamond’s limited facets tend to reveal inclusions, making it the perfect cut for flaunting a diamond’s clarity. Aim for an emerald cut stone with minimal inclusions. Emerald cut diamonds also reveal color more easily than other shapes do, so choose a high color grade if you’re setting your diamond in white metal.

However, setting a “warmer” diamond in yellow or rose gold will make the diamond appear more colorless; you can opt for a lower color grade and invest your money in clarity.

Even though an emerald cut diamond is squared, it’s also elongated. This means that its length creates the optical illusion of elegantly “lengthening” the wearer’s fingers.

Our recommendation: Emerald cut diamonds make a statement on their own and so we say keep it simple with a small twist. Set your emerald diamond at an east-west orientation in a timeless solitaire setting.

East-West Knife Edge Engagement Ring

14K Yellow Gold East-West Knife Edge Cathedral Solitaire Engagement Ring

“Would highly recommend this unique east-west setting. I love it!” -Julia W.

Radiant Cut

Made up of a staggering 70 facets on their pavilion and crown, radiant cut diamonds can disperse more light than other square and rectangular-shaped stones. Practically, this translates into way more brilliance and fire than is found in traditional step cut diamonds.

Radiant diamonds tolerate a good amount of inclusions; in fact, when it comes to clarity they’re pretty much the opposite of emerald cut diamonds. If you’re thinking about purchasing a radiant diamond, save money on clarity and invest in the most colorless diamond you can.

Our recommendation: Radiant cut diamonds have a softer side than most square-shaped diamonds. You can make sure your diamond is the center of attention by having it set in an unforgettable channel setting.

Bow-Tie Channel Set Engagement Ring

“It was one thing to be impressed enough on the online shop with how the ring would look, but when it arrived and I saw it with my own eyes I was lost for words!” -Baxter W.

Asscher Cut

The Asscher cut is the even-sided cousin of the emerald cut. It’s all the beauty of an oblong emerald cut, concentrated into a squared shape. The many, close-set concentric facets give off a “hall of mirrors” effect which is undeniably eye-catching.

These stunning diamonds are clear and bright, often sparkling the way they do because of their centralized facets.

They won’t give the same finger coverage as a pear or oval shape, but their unique pattern is enchanting for anyone looking to wear vintage glamor.

Our recommendation: Asscher cut diamonds are the embodiment of art deco making their ideal ring setting a vintage design or a channel setting for the minimalist wearer.

Thin Channel Set Engagement Ring

14K Yellow Gold Thin Channel Set Round Shaped Diamond Engagement Ring

“I don’t know what I can say. The product in my hand is way better-looking than the model picture.” -Mattias R.

Round Shaped Diamonds For Engagement Rings

Rounded diamonds are some of the most agreeable shapes in that they suit nearly every setting. Their soft edges work well in a range of styles, but they’re the best set off in settings that hug their curves. Go for halos and other settings that surround your main diamond with accent stones.

Cushion Cut

A squarish shape with rounded corners, the cushion cut diamond has been beloved for over a century! It’s a descendent of one of the first widely popular cuts from the 18th century, the old mine cut.

However, cushion cut diamonds contain more delicate facets and a lower crown. This shape is experiencing a resurgence in popularity as couples throwback to the classics.

Their soft pillow-like appearance is a pleasant contrast from our other favorite fancy shaped diamonds, which sport sharper edges. We highly recommend this shape if you’re looking for a delicate temperament diamond.

Our recommendation: Cushion cut diamonds look exceptional in halo settings which will, without doubt, create an enchanting display of glittering brilliance.

Cushion Outline Pavé Engagement Ring

18K White Gold Cushion Outline Pavé Engagement Ring

“The cushion frame, the diamonds on the top and around its edge, really gives it originality and intriguing appeal. It showcased my diamond’s brilliance while adding a lot of pop to my fiancé’s finger.” -Ryan L.

Heart Cut

This romantic shape isn’t for the faint of heart. Heart shaped diamonds put a modern twist on the classic round brilliant cut. With a round diamond’s beloved facet pattern, and a cheeky heart shape, these stones are made for ring shoppers who have no problem progressing tradition.

Our recommendation: There’s no denying that a heart cut diamond makes a statement no matter the chosen ring setting. However, a halo setting is the only way to truly amplify this unique diamond shape.

Shared Prong Marquise Halo Engagement Ring

14K White Gold Shared Prong Marquise Halo Diamond Engagement Ring

“Amazing shopping experience and a beautiful selection. My fiancé loves her ring!” – Joseph L.

Round Cut

Boasting 58 glittering facets and in a perfectly symmetrical cut, the round brilliant diamond is, by far, the best-selling diamond shape on the market. After all, how do you improve on perfection? Its peerless charm suits every ring setting.

There’s a reason it’s the most popular center stone for engagement ring buyers. You will never go wrong with a timeless round cut diamond in any ring setting you choose because it shines just as bright in a simple solitaire setting as it would be surrounded by side stones or adorned in a pavé halo.

Our recommendation: If you choose to go with a round center stone, you’ll give yourself the best opportunity to pick any ring setting that truly speaks to your unique personality and style.

Pavé Rope Engagement Ring

14K White Gold Pavé Rope Engagement Ring

“Simple elegance. My now fiancée wanted something that was not just a ring, but that would not overtake her finger!” -Adolfo L.

Halo Engagement Ring

The Ultimate Halo Engagement Ring Guide

The definition of classy, halo engagement rings are one of the most popular ring styles out there. Keep reading to learn more about these timeless beauties!

Finding the ideal engagement ring can be quite the task! With countless beautiful engagement ring styles to choose from, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. If you are on the hunt for a simple, sophisticated, and classy engagement ring, then the halo setting may be the perfect fit! Halo engagement rings have been in style for centuries, and are likely to continue shining for years to come!

What Is The Halo Setting?

With all this talk of settings and styles, you may be asking one simple question: What exactly is a halo setting? The halo setting features a ring of sparkling accent stones (typically pavé diamonds) that surround or encircle a larger center stone. Halo settings can either be the same shape as the center stone or completely different. This makes the halo setting a versatile feature of any engagement ring.

Pros & Cons Of A Halo Setting

Pros

  • More bling for your buck! This setting can create the illusion of a larger center stone
  • The accent stones add texture and dimension to the center diamond
  • The accent diamonds can protect the center diamond from bumps and scratches
  • Halo settings come in various shapes and forms, making it a truly versatile setting

Cons

  • Due to a low-sitting halo, it can be hard to evenly wear a wedding band with your halo engagement ring
  • Halo settings are often harder to clean than other settings, such as solitaire rings
  • Smaller halo stones can sometimes dislodge and fall off if they’re hit

What Are The Most Popular Diamond Shapes For Halo Engagement Rings?

As previously mentioned, the classic halo setting offers many options for diamond shapes! From oval to emerald, there’s really something for everyone.

Oval Halo Engagement Rings

Oval halo engagement rings offer a classic look with a twist. The elongated center stone, surrounded by striking accents, results in a brilliant display of shine. Oval halo rings often make the finger look slimmer and more elegant.

Cushion Cut Halo Engagement Rings

Known for its soft shape and vintage look, the cushion cut halo engagement ring makes an alluring option. If you like both round halo rings and princess cut halo rings, the cushion cut makes the perfect middle option.

Round Halo Engagement Rings

Round halo engagement rings have been in style for ages and will probably be around for years to come! This is a timeless and classic look that will make any fiancé look glamorous.

Platinum Cathedral Pavé Halo Diamond Engagement Ring

Princess Cut Halo Engagement Rings

The princess cut halo engagement ring has been a go-to choice for years. This style of ring is loved for its sharp and angular sides that bring out extra sparkle.

Emerald Cut Halo Engagement Rings

The emerald cut halo engagement ring offers an eye-catching balance between tradition and modernity. While this style has been around for ages, it remains a popular option for any engagement.

Hidden Halo Rings

Wearing a hidden halo ring is an elegant way to show off your diamonds. The halo is hidden because when facing it front on, you won’t see the accent diamonds. Only at an angle will they shine with all their brilliance.

How to Care for Your Halo Engagement Ring

For many women, their engagement ring is the first piece of fine jewelry that they’ll wear every day. It’s natural to look down at your ring and wonder how to keep it sparkling! Here are a few steps you can follow to keep your ring looking as eye-catching as ever:

  1. Fill a shallow bowl with warm water
  2. Mix the water with a few drops of soap or mild dishwashing detergent
  3. Gently place your ring inside and let it sit there for a few minutes
  4. With a soft-bristled toothbrush (or jewelry cleaning brush), scrub the diamond, rinse it, and pat it dry.

And then you’re done! Make sure you clean your ring at least once every few weeks to keep it bright and shiny!

Tips On Shopping For Halo Engagement Rings

Deciding on a halo engagement ring is the easy part- now you just have to purchase one! Here are some tips on shopping for a halo engagement ring.

What Is The Average Carat Size For An Engagement Ring?

Shopping for an engagement ring is a wonderful yet stressful time. Once you have decided it is the right time, you need to pick out a ring. But not just a ring, you need to choose a diamond, which comes with its own set of factors. Arguably the biggest (yes, pun intended) thing to consider is the carat size of your diamond.

What is the average size and is that the right size for you? Read on to learn what you need to know when choosing the right diamond.

What Is the Average Carat Size for Diamond Engagement Rings?

The average carat size for a diamond engagement ring varies widely depending on a number of factors such as location, cultural norms, and personal preferences. According to recent studies, the average carat size for a diamond engagement ring in the United States is approximately 1.2 carats.

It’s worth mentioning, though, that this figure can be affected by factors such as the age and income of the individuals involved and regional differences. Additionally, the trend towards alternative engagement rings featuring gemstones or smaller diamonds has become more popular in recent years.

Ultimately, the size of the diamond in an engagement ring is a personal decision and will depend on individual tastes, preferences, and budget.

Various Diamond Rings

How to Find the Right Carat Size for You

When it comes to finding the right carat size for an engagement ring or any other piece of diamond jewelry, there are several factors to consider. Here are some things you’ll want to keep in mind:

Budget

It’s important to establish a budget early on. This will ensure you avoid overspending and focus on diamonds within your budget. The size of the diamond you can afford will depend on multiple factors, primarily the 4Cs. (More on that below).

Personal Preference

Bigger does not always mean better. Some people prefer larger diamonds, while others prefer smaller ones. The setting you choose can be an important factor. Certain settings will amplify your diamond, making it appear bigger than its actual carat weight. Make sure to choose a diamond that matches your style and personality because after all, this diamond IS forever.

Not sure about your style? Try before you buy! Testing out different styles, whether in-person or virtually, will help you get an idea of what style of engagement ring and diamond you prefer.

Finger Size

The size of your finger also impacts how your diamond will look on your hand. A larger diamond may overwhelm a small/short finger, while a small diamond may not have as much impact on a larger/wider finger.

Lifestyle

If you lead an active lifestyle or work with your hands, a larger diamond (as well as certain diamond shapes) may not be practical or comfortable to wear daily. If you plan to wear your diamond engagement ring all day, everyday, then your day-to-day lifestyle is an important factor to keep in mind.

Quality Over Size

As we said before, bigger is not always better. A smaller diamond of higher quality can often be more impressive than a larger diamond of lower quality. Remember the 4Cs? Cut, color, and clarity are all things to consider, in addition to a carat weight, i.e. size.

Ultimately, the right carat size for you is a personal decision that should be based on a combination of these factors. Take your time, do your research, and work with a trusted jeweler who can help guide you in your selection process.

How to Change Your Diamond’s Carat Size

Changing the carat size of a diamond is not a simple process, and it may not always be possible depending on the setting and other factors. Here are a few things to consider if you’re looking to change the carat size of a diamond:

  1. Resetting the diamond: if the diamond is currently set in a ring or other piece of jewelry, it may be possible to have it reset in a new setting that can accommodate a larger or smaller stone. This can be done by a professional jeweler.
  1. Upgrading or downsizing the diamond: if you’re looking to upgrade the size of your diamond, you can trade in your current diamond to purchase a larger one. If you want to downsize, you can sell your diamond and purchase a smaller one. Some jewelers offer diamond upgrade and buyback programs.

Keep in mind, if the diamond you are looking to change is currently set in a piece of jewelry, there may be a fee to remove/reset it.

  1. Re-cutting the diamond: it may be possible to re-cut the diamond to change its carat weight, but this is a complex and expensive process that should only be done by a skilled diamond cutter.

It’s important to remember that changing the carat size of a diamond can be costly and may impact the overall value of the diamond. Before making any changes, consider consulting with a trusted jeweler to explore your options and determine the best course of action.

Which Diamond Cut Looks Biggest?

When it comes to diamond cuts, certain shapes can appear larger than other shapes with the same carat weight. This is thanks to how they are cut and how they interact with light. Here are a few diamond cuts that can look bigger than their carat weight suggests:

Oval: The elongated shape of an oval cut diamond can make it appear larger than a round shaped diamond of the same carat weight. Its elongated shape can also make the finger appear slimmer.

Pear: The pointed end of a pear cut diamond can create the illusion of an elongated finger, while the rounded end can make the diamond appear larger.

Marquise: The elongated shape of a marquise cut diamond can make it look larger than a round cut diamond of the same carat weight. The pointed ends can also create the illusion of an elongated finger. Compare the oval and pear shapes to the marquise below:

Princess: The square shape of a princess cut diamond can make it appear larger than the popular round cut diamond of the same carat weight due to its square face up appearance.

It’s important to keep in mind that a well cut diamond, regardless of the shape, will maximize its brilliance and fire, making it more visually stunning. Ultimately, the diamond that fits your size and sparkle needs is the best one for you.

How Much Should You Spend on an Engagement Ring?

The amount you should spend on an engagement ring can vary widely depending on factors including your budget and personal preferences. It’s important to remember that there is no set rule for how much you should spend on an engagement ring, and ultimately, the amount you spend should be based on what you and your partner are the most comfortable with.

It has been suggested that you should spend anywhere from two to six months’ salary on an engagement ring, but this is just a guideline and should not be taken as a hard and fast rule.

An important recommendation is to spend an amount that you can comfortably afford without going into debt or compromising your financial goals. On average, most couples budget for anything from $1000 to $6000.

How to Get the Best Value Diamond For Your Budget

If you’re looking to get the best value diamond for your budget, here are a few tips to consider:

Prioritize the 4 Cs

The 4 Cs of diamond quality are cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. While carat weight is often the most visible factor, cut quality has a very high impact on a diamond’s sparkle and brilliance too. Don’t forget to prioritize cut, in addition to a carat weight, and aim for a diamond with a good balance of all 4 Cs.

Consider Shape

Different diamond shapes can be priced differently, with round cut diamonds often being the most expensive. Consider looking at other shapes, such as oval or pear, which can offer more value for your budget.

Choose a Lower Clarity Grade

While a diamond with a high clarity grade is desirable, choosing one with a lower clarity grade can offer more value for your budget. And a lower grade does not mean poor quality. In fact, multiple categories of diamonds are part of the “flawless or “near flawless” families.

Consider a diamond with a clarity grade of SI1 or SI2, part of the “slightly included” family, which can offer a good balance of quality and affordability.

Pro Tip:
The important factor in a diamond’s clarity is what is visible to the naked eye. Unless your betrothed-to-be carries around a jeweler’s loop or a magnifying glass, you can focus on diamonds that appear flawless when viewed normally.

Shop Online

Online diamond retailers often offer better value for your money (we can’t argue there!) than traditional brick-and-mortar retailers due to their lower overhead costs. Be sure to do your research and choose a reputable online retailer that offers certified diamonds.

Ultimately, the best way to get the best value diamond for your budget is to do your research, prioritize your preferences and budget, and work with a reputable jeweler to find the best diamond that fits your needs.

FAQs

Is a 2 carat diamond considered to be big?

While big is in the eye of the beholder, a 2 carat diamond is about twice the size of the average engagement ring, which is around 1 carat.

Does carat size really matter?

Yes and no. A diamond’s carat size will be a significant factor in determining its cost. However, it is far from the only important consideration when choosing a diamond.

Is a 1.5 carat diamond too big?

Too big is relative. While a 1.5 carat diamond is larger than the average, what is considered “too big” is personal. If you prefer a more petite diamond of around 0.5 to 1 carat, then yes, it would be too big. However, if you are looking for a larger stone of 2 carats and up, then a 1.5 carat would be too small.

How much does a 2.5 carat diamond engagement ring cost?

There are many factors to determine the cost of any diamond engagement ring. A lab grown diamond will cost less than a diamond mined from the earth. A diamond with a higher cut, color, and clarity grades will be more expensive than diamonds with lower grades. On average, a 2.5 carat diamond engagement ring will start at approximately $10,000.

Don’t forget that the setting is a factor too! If you go for a sparkly setting, such as pavé or halo, cost more than a more simple setting, such as a solitaire.

Final Thoughts

Choosing an engagement ring can be a stressful process. Here at JamesAllen.com, we aim to make this as simple, easy, and fun as possible. Keep in mind your budget, your style, and the 4Cs. Do your research, work with a reputable jeweler, and remember that the right carat size is the one that works best for you and your partner.

How do you tell your partner exactly what engagement ring you want without sacrificing the element of surprise? We’ve got the pro tips you’re looking to drop a hint.

7 Ways to Drop A Hint and Get Your Perfect Engagement Ring

So your engagement is in the air! Maybe you’ve talked about it at length, maybe you just know that the time is nigh, but however you know – you need a ring to get it done

Many people, although they know exactly which ring they want, aren’t sure how to get the message across to their partner without spoiling the surprise. That “OMG!” face just can’t be faked, after all!

It’s a tricky tightrope to walk between planned and unplanned. On the one hand, it’s crucial that both partners are on the same page regarding wanting to get married. On the other hand, popping the question – as the phrase implies – is an exciting, explosive event. To many, it’s just as crucial to creating the toe-tingling, je-ne-se-quois atmosphere of an unexpected proposal.

Most of the below tips can be dropped subtly or obviously, and we’ll tell you how.

Or, you can simply copy the link and send it however you’d like.

  1. Create a JamesAllen.com account
  2. Browse ring candidates
  3. Click on the heart icon beside the “select this setting” button on any ring page to add that particular model to your wishlist
  4. Give your partner your JamesAllen.com password
  5. They see your wishlist and surprise you with one of your dream rings!

Use Pinterest To Drop A Hint

Good for when:

  • You’re an avid, organized researcher

Pinterest is an incredible tool for dropping a hint! There are two ways to use Pinterest to drop a hint:

  1. Save specific rings to your “Engagement Ring” Pinterest board, just as you would on your James Allen wishlist.
  2. Save engagement ring characteristics on different boards, and then let your partner choose the ring themselves.

Let’s focus on option #2. For each characteristic, make a titled board. For example, you may want a yellow gold solitaire engagement ring with a high, diamond-encrusted basket. In this case, you’ll make 4 boards: “Yellow Gold Rings,” “Solitaire Engagement Rings,” “Rings with High Baskets,” and “Rings with Diamond Baskets.”

Diamond Pave Basket Engagement Ring

“Beautiful, blindingly shiny! The pave on the basket is so unique, we love how it lets the solitaire diamond take center stage when viewing the ring from the top, but adds extra sparkle from the side.” – Joshua L.

“As it glistens on her hand, she smiles. This ring was everything she wanted, and it makes me happy to see her happy. Looks great, fits great, and putting it on for the first time is unforgettable.” -Marcus S.

Don’t forget to get your partner to follow you on Pinterest! Either tell them up-front what your profile name is, or get a good friend to tip them off.

Pro tip: For specifics on how to use Pinterest to the fullest, read up on Using Pinterest To Find Your Partner’s Dream Ring.

Drop A Hint On Instagram

Good for when:

  • You’ve got a good community on social media.

Are you and your partner both on Instagram? Or do you have a good friend who can pass along your messages? Whenever you see a choice engagement ring on IG, tag your special someone.

Pro tip: Here’s a good start: follow @jamesallenrings on Instagram. Every James Allen post includes the specific model name and number so your follower(s) know exactly what to look for.

Triple Diamond Engagement Ring

The Double Date

Good for when:

  • Your partner’s perceptive
  • You’ve got mutual friends with good taste.

Go out on a double date with engaged/married friends, preferably ones who are in on your drop-a-hint plan. Now it’s go time: strike up a conversation about engagement rings! Compliment the ring they chose, ask them what they like about it, and most importantly: talk about the specific elements of their ring that you love. Your partner will definitely get the hint.

Feel free to punctuate this conversation with heavy winks and emphatic throat-clearing.

Pro tip: this doesn’t necessarily have to be a date with an engaged friend. It also works with a mutual friend, so long as you talk about engagement rings in general.

Channel Set Engagement Ring

14K Rose Gold Channel Set Princess Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

Tell a friend

Good for when:

  • Your partner is well-meaning, but not so perceptive.

Enlist a good friend’s help to drop a hint! Tell them exactly what you want. Include links, photos, and celebrity engagement ring examples, as well as a sub-list of ring elements that you definitely don’t want in your ring.

Write a list

Good for when:

  • Your partner really doesn’t want to make a mistake!

Ok, so your partner needs a little help. Writing a list is a good way to drop a hint and let your partner know the nuances of your ring preferences. This is more than a simple collection of rings; writing a detailed list lets them know where they have a bit of wiggle room to be creative.

Elements of a good engagement ring list:

  1. Specific ring models. You can rank your list of preferences or let your partner know that you love them all equally. Either way, be sure to specify your level of desire for each ring.
  2. A list of must-have ring elements
  3. A list of must-NOT-have ring elements

Pro tip: Accompany your list with a little love note and get creative with how you deliver it; text, email, or a hand-written letter!  No miscommunications, no way.

Gemstone Engagement Rings: Things You Need to Know

Torn between diamond vs gemstone engagement rings? We’re breaking down our favorite reasons to take the plunge and invest in a colorful precious gemstone ring for your bride or groom-to-be.

Gemstone engagement rings

Picking an engagement ring is not a task done lightly. We understand the time and effort that goes into choosing and even creating the perfect ring for your partner. As far as engagement rings go, diamonds are usually the first choice given their sparkle, durability, and brilliance.

On the other hand, Gemstones make for equally stunning center stones on engagement rings of all styles and settings.

Gemstone engagement rings aren’t a new trend. We’ve seen for centuries the most glamorous royals and celebrities styled in gemstone jewelry. Unlike diamonds, unique gemstone rings come in any color across the spectrum and add something special to the ring.

Gemstone engagement rings can add sentimental value to the ring and also allow you to show your partner how well you know them. Whether it’s gifting them with a center stone gem that is their favorite color or one that holds a certain meaning to them. And trust us, gemstones of all kinds are filled with beautiful symbolism and unique characteristics, just like your future fiancé.

Take a walk with us as we explore the endless pros of getting a gemstone engagement ring.

Popular Gemstone Engagement Ring Types

The four most sought-after precious gemstones are diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and rubies. We’ll be taking a deep dive into the last three and explain why each of them have unique and worthwhile features that match the value of a diamond centerpiece.

Blue Sapphire Engagement Rings

Not sure if you’re into sapphires yet? Let’s count the many ways these precious gemstones will take your engagement ring to the next level.

Sapphires don’t just come in popular blue tones but can occur in nature from pink to violet. In fact, you can find any fancy sapphire and pick your favorite color from the rainbow. Like fancy-shaped diamonds, you’ll also find that your gemstone center stone can be cut to your desired shape.

These gems are also incredibly tough and durable. On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, sapphires score a 9 out of 10. That means that the only material strong enough to scratch them is a diamond. When you aren’t considering how stunning they are, it’s good to know that your gemstone engagement ring also has endless durability.

Yellow Sapphire Engagement Rings

Replacing a diamond center stone for a sapphire could increase the sentimental value of the engagement ring for you and your partner.

For example, we mentioned gemstone symbolism before, and it so happens that sapphires hold the perfect meaning for the start of a lifelong promise. Truth, peace, prosperity, and faithfulness are just some of the many special feelings this gemstone represents, making it quite fitting as an engagement ring choice.

Pink Sapphire Engagement Rings

Let’s put a spotlight on one of our favorite romantic gemstones. Sapphires are rare but the rarest of all are pink sapphires, commonly found in Sri Lanka. These gemstones range from a pinkish-orange color to bright pink and can add the perfect touch to your engagement ring.

Finally, if all the other impressive facts haven’t convinced you, we’ll play our final card. Did you know that sapphires are mystical gemstones that have the ability to change color throughout the day?

Yes, you heard right. Blue sapphires can take on a more purplish hue under incandescent light at night time, making them all the more alluring and unique, like your love.

Emerald Engagement Rings

When we think of emerald engagement rings, several A-list celebrities come to mind, from Jackie Kennedy to Halle Berry and the style icon that is Victoria Beckham.

Their rings are among the most famous gemstone engagement rings and there are plenty of reasons why emerald center stones are unforgettable statement pieces.

To begin with, high-quality emeralds are rarer than diamonds and have a lower density, making them appear larger than a diamond with the same carat weight.

While emeralds are softer gemstones, they can still be cut and polished to your preferred shape. No matter what size and shape your emerald is, you can count on it to be vibrant and eye-catching.

Ruby Engagement Rings

Ruby engagement rings come in shades of red, starting from pinkish hues to blood-red colored gemstones. They’re just as strong as sapphires, registering as 9 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, making them a resilient choice for center stones.

Rubies often come flawed, and those that are without imperfections are known as, “Burmese Rubies.” Even though there is no perfect ruby it’s hardly cause for concern, as they are the boldest and most breathtaking gemstones, in our humble opinion.

These unique gemstones symbolize richness, success, and romance, the perfect representation for an engagement ring. They pair well on three stone ring settings and shine brighter when they have diamonds alongside them.

Key Takeaways

Gemstone engagement rings are always there as an option and a colorful alternative to a diamond engagement ring. So, talk to your partner if choosing an engagement ring together is an option.

V2 Blog James Allen X Swns Engagement Ring Story Blog Cover

Are You A “Normal” Ring Shopper?

Want to know how you compare to other ring shoppers? We can tell you thanks to this survey collaboration with SWNS.

A picture of an engaged couple. The woman has her arms wrapped around his neck and is showing off her diamond ring.

When do I know I’m ready to get married?

Half of Americans in a relationship knew they wanted to marry their partner the moment they met. In fact, that statistic holds up across genders! 46% of women and 47% of men immediately knew that their partner was the one.

What about those who are skeptical of marriage? A third of respondents say that their current partner made them want to get married – that’s a quarter of women and half of men.

What does this mean for you? Well, there doesn’t seem to be much of a correlation between how long a couple dates and the strength of their marriage. Whatever feels right is right for you. It doesn’t particularly matter whether it takes months or years for you two to arrive at the altar. Your journey is your own, but the destination is the same for each married couple.

A statistic answering the question: "When do I know I’m ready to get married?"

After the wedding, should I wear my wedding ring, my engagement ring, or both?

If you’re asking yourself, “How should I wear my wedding ring set?” then we’ve got news for you: there are no absolute rules regarding how to wear your rings! After the wedding, most Americans wear their wedding ring closest to their knuckle, paired with their engagement ring just over it.

Other ring options:

  • Wear your full wedding set, but swap the order: the engagement ring closest to the knuckle, with the wedding ring further down on your finger.
  • Wear only your wedding ring

If you like your wedding ring best, or if your engagement ring tends to get in the way in your day-to-day life, then you may want to wear your wedding ring exclusively.

  • Wear only your engagement ring

Do you like your engagement ring more than your wedding band? Then leave your wedding band at home! You’re still celebrating your relationship, just with more emphasis on your sparkling center stone.

  • Wear your wedding ring and engagement ring on different hands

This can be a great choice for those whose wedding ring and engagement ring don’t sit flush. Or, on the other hand, your local tradition may dictate this. In Spain, for instance, the engagement ring usually goes on the left hand, while the wedding ring usually goes on the right.

  • Wear your wedding ring and engagement ring on different fingers

Other than for style reasons, this choice is common for those whose fingers have changed size, particularly post-pregnancy. If this strikes a chord, remember that James Allen offers free ring resizing either via mail or in select Jared jewelry stores.

  • Wear your wedding ring and engagement ring on the right hand

In some cultures, right > left. In fact, Catholic and eastern European tradition dictates that the wedding and engagement ring both be worn on the right hand.

All in all, only about half of respondents constantly wear their wedding rings and engagement rings together. The other half either wear only one ring or forgo wearing rings altogether.

The bottom line: you do you, boo.

How long should I save up for an engagement ring?

This is totally up to you. A quarter of Americans say they don’t believe there’s a set amount of time, while 65% of Americans believe you should save up for a year at maximum.

However, there’s no majority consensus. How do people determine how much a ring should cost?

  • You can set your ring budget by the amount of money you can save in a certain number of months
  • You can determine a budget independent of time constraints
  • You can find your dream ring and save up until you have enough to purchase it

The time necessary to save up money is heavily dependent on both your budget and the price of your desired ring. And if your budget is inflexible, here are some options for lowering the overall cost of your ring!

Important: James Allen offers special financing options if you can’t fully afford your ring right now, but still want to get engaged ASAP!

How much should my engagement ring cost?

Just 15% of Americans believe an engagement ring should cost over $5,000. Why is this important? It means you shouldn’t feel pressured to buy an expensive ring.

If you want to splurge on an impressive ring, go for it! You can always add more diamonds to the basket and shank, upgrade to a more pricey diamond, or choose platinum as your ring metal.

On the other hand, you should know that smaller budgets are extremely common. Additionally, many people’s dream rings fall well within their ring budgets!

If you’re operating within a smaller budget, have a look at our favorite affordable engagement rings. You and your wallet will fall in love!

Is it important to buy an expensive engagement ring?

71% of Americans don’t really care about the cost of the engagement ring.

What seems to be most important is that the ring suits the recipient. If your dream ring is priced higher than your current budget allows, there are plenty of ways to adjust your ring’s cost without compromising on appearance.

Ways to reduce the cost of your engagement ring:

  1. Choose a lab grown diamond, which can cost up to 50% less than a traditional natural diamond.
  2. Go for slightly under full carats. For instance, the price difference between a .95 carat diamond and a 1.00 carat diamond is significant, but the size difference is not noticeable to the naked eye.
  3. Choose an elongated diamond shape, which appears large for its carat weight.
  4. Want a white jewelry metal? Go for white gold rather than platinum.
  5. Compromise on color. The less colorless a diamond is, the more affordable it is. Save money on a diamond with a slightly yellow tint, then pair it with a yellow or rose gold setting. The warm jewelry metal will mask the diamond’s color and no one can tell the difference!
A statistic answering the question, "Is it important to buy an expensive engagement ring?"

Should we share the cost of an engagement ring?

4 out of 10 couples share the cost of their engagement ring. An engagement ring is a big purchase! Not only can sharing the cost be a practical decision (and perhaps one that would allow for a more expensive ring), but taking this important journey together can bring a couple closer to one another.

Whether or not you share the cost of an engagement ring, here’s why we recommend designing your ring together.

A statistic answering the question, "Should we share the cost of an engagement ring?"

Should I get a custom engagement ring or a pre-set engagement ring?

36% of ring shoppers prefer a customized engagement ring, while 26% would rather go with a pre-set ring.

Any of James Allen’s rings can be customized with your unique gemstone and jewelry metal. For additional customization with unique baskets, halos, and shanks, visit the Ring Studio.

A statistic answering the question, "Should I get a custom engagement ring or a pre-set engagement ring?"

What’s the perfect proposal?

Ring in the champagne glass? “Will You Marry Me?” written in the sky? An impromptu proposal at home?

71% of Americans prefer a traditional proposal, in which a partner gets down on one knee and pops the question. It’s traditional, but there are a thousand and one ways to do it! Customize your proposal to your hearts’ content.

Which proposal will suit the two of you?

  • Just the two of you vs. alongside friends and family
  • A destination proposal vs. a proposal at home
  • Simple vs. extravagant
  • Impromptu vs. planned

Hailey Bieber’s Engagement Ring: The Ultimate Guide

Hailey Bieber’s Engagement Ring

Hailey Baldwin met Justin Bieber when the two were youngsters backstage at one of his concerts. The two became fast friends and dated on and off before Justin proposed to Baldwin in the Bahamas in July of 2018.

After news traveled fast, Bieber posted a lengthy and heartfelt post, confirming their engagement and his clear devotion to his wife-to-be.

The next day, Hailey was seen sporting an impressive sparkler around the island, noticeable for its resemblance to another star’s engagement ring- Blake Lively- no surprise as Hailey had once retweeted a post that read, “If my ring isn’t as big as Blake Lively’s, I don’t want to get married.“ Clearly, the Biebs got the hint because the two engagement rings could be sister twins except for some minor unique yet stunning details.

Hailey Bieber knows how to work both her engagement and wedding rings. In these pictures, we see her and her now-husband posing at their wedding while showing off her blinged-out left hand, with her world-famous engagement ring and her curved pavé wedding ring

Hailey and Bieber's Engagement Ring

What Style Setting is Hailey Bieber’s Engagement Ring?

Hailey Bieber’s engagement ring appears to be a classic 18K yellow gold solitaire band with a hidden diamond halo basket elevating the oval center stone. The ring was a custom-designed piece by Jack Solow of Solow & Co. Inc Diamond Jewelers.

The solitaire setting is by far the most traditional style and speaks to classic elegance. With a solitaire setting, there are no added diamonds along with the band, but the band can be shaped to your taste. Styles like knife edge, comfort fit, etched rope, and cable solitaire are all trendy ways to add your personality to an engagement ring.

Yellow gold is the most common gold used for engagement rings and is considered the most traditional metal. This metal is easier to maintain than white gold, giving you that perfect vintage feel. It’s also more malleable, making it cheaper to resize.

What Diamond Shape is Hailey’s Engagement Ring?

Hailey Bieber’s engagement ring is set with a glowing oval cut diamond. This diamond cut has been recorded since the 1300s and is usually priced lower than round brilliant cut center stones.

Three different sized oval cut diamonds

Oval cut diamonds are considered to be “fancy-shaped” diamonds, with an elongated design that makes them appear larger than diamonds of the same carat weight.

This style is perfect for a wearer who prefers a longer-looking diamond and one that will make the fingers appear slimmer. Oval-shaped diamonds pair perfectly with almost every setting and work incredibly well with three stone and vintage styles.

How Many Carats is Hailey Bieber’s Engagement Ring?

Hailey’s massive oval cut engagement ring is estimated to be between 6-10 carats. The center diamond is colorless.

How Much Did Hailey Bieber’s Ring Cost? And What’s It Really Worth?!

Justin Bieber went all out when buying Hailey’s engagement ring. Experts say the ring costs around $500,000.

Looking at an ideal oval cut diamond with excellent specifications (F Color, VVS1 Clarity) at James Allen, the estimate seems accurate.

Hailey Bieber Engagement Ring Lookalikes

This piece is classic and refined and offers understated elegance and unsurpassed comfort while highlighting the oval-cut center diamond. Designed with smaller carat weight diamonds in mind, it is sophisticated and petite without sacrificing stability.

18K Yellow Gold 1.5mm Comfort Fit Engagement Ring

Who says affordability and beauty don’t go hand-in-hand? This diamond edge knife solitaire offers the best of both worlds with its classic appeal at a cost-effective price. Unlink Hailey’s ring; there is no diamond basket, and it has more traditional features.

18K Yellow Gold Presentation Solitaire (Six Prong)

This elegant solitaire engagement ring features a delicate pinched shank with an intricate wire basket that allows you to see the oval-shaped diamond fully. This engagement ring is just as polished as Hailey’s, with the same timeless appeal.

A Closer Look at Kourtney Kardashian’s Engagement Ring

Want to shine like a Kardashian? Join us as we explore Kourtney Kardashian’s stunning sparkler.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker smiling after the proposal.

Congratulations are in order for the newly engaged, pop-punk couple! Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker got down on one knee and proposed to the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, Kourtney Kardashian, in October 2021. Everything about the evening was nothing short of perfect and romantic. And we definitely can’t wait to see their wedding.

Rumors were confirmed at the beginning of 2021 after paparazzi footage of the two stars surfaced, the lovebirds were spotted enjoying each other’s company while out to dinner. However, while their relationship might seem relatively new to some, the pair have actually been longtime pals and neighbors.

Unlike her famous sisters who enjoy the spotlight, Kourt is usually pretty private about her love life. But this time around, she’s been doing things a lot different with her musician bae from many public displays of affection to new ink and more. Fans have loved watching their love blossom all over social media from the day they became ‘Instagram official’.

Kourtney Kardashian’s Engagement Ring Pictures

Naturally, everything about the proposal was absolutely breathtaking. From the heart-shaped display of red roses and candles at a beachfront hotel in California to the post-engagement dinner, where the couple was joined by their close friends and family. And of course, the spectacular ring!

After the news traveled around the world, Kourtney later confirmed the couple’s engagement on social media by posting one of their sweetest moments from the evening and captioned the post, “Forever”. Luckily for us, we got to get a closer glimpse of the romantic occasion when more stunning photos were posted, including Kourtney’s incredible rock on her left hand.

Insiders revealed that Travis Barker worked closely with a bespoke jewelry designer to create Kourtney’s gorgeous showstopper. Her ring includes an elongated oval-shaped solitaire diamond sitting upon a slim white-gold or platinum pavé band.

While the eldest Kardashian sister has always been about “less is more”, it’s no wonder that her engagement ring is both simple and clean.

And, since this is Kourtney’s first engagement, it goes without saying that this is a huge deal. Kardashian’s massive diamond sparkler is estimated to be between 10 and 12 carats and around $1M. But, you can now get a ring just like it (for a lot less) only at JamesAllen.com.

Oval diamonds

Oval engagement rings are a stunning choice and appeal to a variety of brides. One of the many reasons why oval-shaped engagement rings are becoming increasingly popular is because it not only lengthens the finger but also give the appearance of a larger diamond.

An oval cut diamond is actually very much underestimated even though they are versatile and distinctive, compared to other diamond shapes.

Oval-shaped diamonds pair perfectly with almost every setting and are perfect for the person who is looking for a timeless ring with a touch of individuality.

If you’re inspired by the future Mrs. Barker’s engagement ring and want to mimic her simplistic style, you’ve come to the right place! The ring is not a complicated one to replicate, due to its classic and sophisticated appearance.

At James Allen, we have designed a very similar and elegant diamond ring, highlighting the oval cut diamond. However, made with a smaller carat weight allowing the price to perfectly suit your budget.

This French Cut pavé diamond engagement ring has been designed to maximize the amount of light that hits the diamonds from all sides. The custom-tailored prongs are set into the ring’s shank, allowing a variety of bands to sit flush with the engagement ring. This ring is a very close match to what Kourtney has. However, you can also customize this ring in our ring studio with any diamond shape to suit your personal style.

This stunning ring is also available in various metal types (White Gold, Yellow Gold, Rose Gold And Platinum), and can be fitted with a lab-created or earth-created diamond.

5 Reasons Why Oval Cut Diamonds Are So Timeless And Trendy

Oval diamonds are not just brilliant and dazzling, they have many other advantages too. Let’s take a closer look at some of the reasons this shape is so popular.

  1. Contemporary – oval cut diamonds have indeed been around for centuries, however, it wasn’t until the late 1950s that the modern oval cut became an addition to diamond engagement rings. Invented by expert diamond cutter Lazare Kaplan of Russia, this cut elongates that traditional round shape. Oval cut diamonds lack sharp angles, which makes them less vulnerable to chipping, compared to other shapes.
  1. More Affordable – oval cut diamonds are considered to be one of the “fancy shaped diamonds”. This means that a fancy shaped diamond is any type of diamond that is not a round brilliant diamond. All fancy shaped diamonds, including oval diamonds, are more affordable than round diamonds.
  1. Another advantage of oval cut diamonds is their timeless, yet still eye-catching style. Oval diamonds are quite classic and sophisticated. Visually, they’re similar to round diamond gemstones, with their elegant, rounded shape. Yet, their elongated look is just different enough to give them a striking, unique look that makes them stand out.
  1. Versatile one of the reasons why oval diamonds have spiked in popularity, is due to the fact that the shape of the diamond suits a wide variety of ring designs. Whether you’re wanting to go for the minimalist solitaire setting on a delicate band or opt for a more romantic design that includes Pavé embellishments, the wide selection of styles truly allows for something for everyone.
  1. Unique did you know that the oval cut diamond is not just unique in design but also in cut? This is because every oval diamond possesses its own individual length and width. The length to width ratio ultimately reveals how long and thin or wide and round your oval diamond will be. Now, this may sound very complicated but in actual fact, it is only the length measurement of a diamond divided by its width. Many experts say that the ideal length-to-width ratio of an oval is 1.35-1.50. A diamond that falls within this range will not be too round, or too pointy! The perfect, elongated oval shape helps give the illusion of greater length on a finger.

Sofia Vergara’s Engagement Ring: The Ultimate Guide

Sofia Vergara smiling with her husband Joe on the red carpet.

Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello’s relationship is a classic tale of “when you know, you know.” The two stars got engaged a mere six months after they began dating, and their love is still going strong six years later.

The pair are often heard speaking fondly (and hilariously) of one another during their talk show appearances, and they’re not shy when showing off their wholesome and beautiful relationship on Instagram.

Joe proposed to Sofia in a stunning display of romance, promising her forever with the view of Hawaiian mountains in the background. Did we mention he did this all in her native language, Spanish? *Swoon*

Here’s all we know about Sofia’s humongous diamond sparkler and where you can find a ring just like it at JamesAllen.com.

We’re going to share the following fun facts with you:

  1. The style of Sofia’s engagement ring
  2. The diamond shape
  3. The diamonds carat size
  4. How much Sofia’s engagement ring cost
  5. Sofia’s engagement ring lookalikes

Sofia’s Vergara’s Engagement Ring Pictures

Sofia and Joe have had many public appearances together, but this one was by far the most jaw-dropping. The stunning couple showed up to the 2015 SAG Awards, dressed to the nines, and had all eyes on them with her showstopping diamond sparkler on full display.

What Style Setting is Sofia Vergara’s Engagement Ring?

Sofia’s Vergara’s engagement ring is a sparkling pavé halo setting with a cushion cut center stone, held firmly in place by four prong claws. The platinum band has intricate diamonds adorning it, a detail that only adds to the ring’s unique aesthetic.

Platinum Cathedral Pave Halo Diamond Engagement Ring

The halo setting is a highly popular trend right now for brides and grooms-to-be. This setting is ideal for anyone who wants to bring that extra sparkle to their engagement ring. A halo accent is also a sure way to make the center stone appear more striking than what it would on its own.

A halo setting is one way to make your ring all the more spectacular, but a band studded with tiny diamonds is one embellishment that suits modern and vintage engagement rings alike. The more diamonds you have, the more you’ll glow.

What Diamond Shape is Sofia’s Engagement Ring?

The center stone on Sofia Vergara’s engagement ring is a cushion cut diamond.

Cushion-shaped diamonds are ranked the third most popular diamond cut after the round brilliant and princess. Like round diamonds, they are incredibly versatile and fit perfectly in just about any setting. They’re especially liked for the illusion they give off, appearing like crushed ice.

Two different sized cushion cut diamonds sparkling on a gravel stone top.

Cushion cut diamonds tend to experience less damage because they don’t have any sharp edges. Their smooth outline makes it difficult for chipping to occur. Overall, this pillow-shaped diamond is an excellent investment and low maintenance.

Another fantastic bonus is that these diamonds are budget-friendly. They’re less expensive than round-cut diamonds and often produce the same fire and brilliance.

How Many Carats is Sofia Vergara’s Engagement Ring?

Sofia’s engagement ring is practically impossible to miss. Experts estimate her engagement ring to be between 5-7 carats.

The diamond seems to be at least an F or higher on the color scale.

How Much Did Sofia Vergara’s Ring Cost? And What’s It Really Worth?!

Sofia’s ring has been featured on many sites as one of the most expensive celebrity engagement rings. Joe is said to have paid around $500,000 for the engagement ring that could be mistaken for a miniature ice-rink.

Looking at an ideal cushion cut diamond with excellent specifications (E Color, VVS2 Clarity) at James Allen, the estimate seems accurate.

The Most Asked Questions About Engravings

Traditionally, engravings are done by machines that use a diamond tip instrument and a clamping technique. However, with the introduction of the latest technology, laser engravings, your choice of engravings on your wedding, anniversary, or engagement ring are now boundless.

What is Laser Engraving?

Laser engraving is performed using a machine equipped with a pencil-like laser that a person or artist controls. A laser beam allows the device to trace words, images, symbols, and patterns, to create the perfect custom engraved rings. Laser engraving can be done on just about any surface and works on all precious and alternative metals.

Fun fact: Laser engraving is different from machine engraving, as it allows for more accurate engravings with clear-cut and deeper lines. Plus, it’s not limited to any particular font either.

Matching Pavé Wedding Ring

“I FOUND LOVE 3-14-19”

Why is Laser Engraving Easier to Read?

Laser engraving is much easier to read than machine engraving because it has a higher precision rate. It doesn’t chip away at the metal, and there is no wear and tear from tool usage because it’s a laser.

The laser burns the metal, turning the messaging or imagery darker, making it easier to read. The laser is also more detail-driven and can produce the tiniest features, making unique personalized engraved rings or jewelry all the more appealing.

“YOU HAVE MY HEART”

Matching Filigree Wedding Ring

Platinum Matching Wedding Band

“I KNEW I’D MARRY YOU”

Will the Engraving Scratch off?

Our rings go through natural erosion the longer we wear them. Men’s wedding rings, for example, often need to be polished and mended for damage or breakage. The tougher your lifestyle, the more strain your ring will take long-term.

If you’re planning to make a personalized engraving on the outside of your ring, chances are, somewhere along the line, you may need to have the engraving redone. But, the durability of the engraving relies mainly on the durability of the metal itself.

Opt for stronger metals like tungsten or platinum when engraving on the ring’s exterior, as softer metals, like white gold, are more vulnerable to chips and scratches.

On a more encouraging note, engravings on the inside of a ring are likely never to wear away or become scratched, no matter the ring’s metal.

What’s the Cost for Engraving?

Laser engraved wedding bands are the most popular jewelry to receive personalized messages and details. Experts estimate that getting a ring engraved can cost between $25 for up to 30 characters, including spaces.

Here at James Allen, our customers can opt for a free engraving at checkout, on us! We offer you the choice between block or script fonts. You choose the engraving and we’ll take care of the rest.

Pro tip: choose the block font if your band is less than 2mm thick.

Beyoncé’s Engagement Ring: The Ultimate Guide

Beyoncé brushing back her hair while showing off her sparkling diamond engagement ring.

Beyoncé is more than a show-stopping performer; she’s a style icon for this generation and those to come. Her fans love to catch glimmers into her personal life and relationships. So, in 2004, when she and Jay-Z made their red-carpet debut as a couple, not only did their union make perfect sense to the world, but it made their fans ecstatic. Two masters of the arts joining together to become one of Hollywood’s power couples.

Their relationship has spanned over two decades, and while both of them love to put on a show for fans, their private life has always been just that – private.

It came as a huge surprise to fans when they announced their marriage in April 2008. The pair had given no indication that they had been engaged prior, and boy was it impossible to miss the magnificent rock she now wears on her hand.

Beyoncé’s engagement ring is almost as famous as she is, and we’re here to tell you all you need to know about the eye-catching diamond and where to find its lookalikes on JamesAllen.com.

We’re going to share the following fun facts with you:

  1. The style of Beyoncé’s engagement ring
  2. The diamond shape
  3. The diamonds carat size
  4. How much Beyoncé’s engagement ring cost
  5. Beyoncé’s engagement ring lookalikes

Beyoncé has been captured with her engagement ring on many glamorous occasions. Our first image, in particular, shows off the giant diamond sparkler perfectly in a zoomed-in shot. She can be seen brushing back her hair with her ring finger on full display.

The second image is of her at an awards ceremony. Here she’s gracefully lifting her hands to show off her diamond ring with a smile.

What Style Setting is Beyoncé’s Engagement Ring?

Beyoncé’s engagement ring is an emerald cut diamond, held in place with prongs that are set in a pavé split shank setting. The metal is said to be platinum, an unusual, yet fitting metal for the award-winning artist.

14K White Gold Pavé Split Shank Contour Diamond Engagement Ring

Pavé set diamonds on the band are perfect for extra sparkle and a touch of elegance. It goes beyond the classic solitaire and adds more flair to the ring. If you’re going for a larger center stone, as in Beyoncé’s case, a split shank band will provide additional support to the center diamond. This makes the setting more comfortable and secure for the wearer, particularly if you’re wearing your ring for extended periods of time.

Not only does a split shank band add more support, but it also highlights the glamour of the diamond center with an artful design. These settings can be subtle or dramatic, depending on your individual taste.

What Diamond Shape is Beyoncé’s Engagement Ring?

The center stone on Beyoncé’s engagement ring is an emerald-cut diamond.

A person holding a sea shell above crystal clear water while showing off her diamond engagement ring.

The emerald cut was first worn by royalty making it the perfect fancy-shaped diamond for Queen B. The style is bold and elegant and often gives the wearer the appearance of a slimmer finger because of the elongated cut.

Like other fancy shapes, emerald cuts are excellent at consuming much of the rough diamond’s carat weight. Their shape has trimmed corners, a small feature that brings out an old-school glamour that comes with wearing any emerald-cut diamond.

How Many Carats is Beyoncé’s Engagement Ring?

It’s no secret that Beyoncé’s diamond sparkler is far bigger than the average engagement ring. Jay-Z decided on an enormous 24-carat flawless emerald-cut diamond.

How Much Did Beyoncé’s Ring Cost? And What’s It Really Worth?!

Beyoncé’s engagement ring was designed by Lorraine Schwartz, who is a well-known jewelry designer for celebrities. She is notorious for using only top-quality stones. So it comes as no surprise that the center stone in Beyonce’s ring is a rare flawless diamond. It has no blemishes or inclusions, and the entire engagement ring costs an estimated $5 million.

For comparison, we have this emerald-cut diamond with excellent specifications (D Color, IF Clarity) at James Allen:

Jennifer Lopez’s Engagement Ring: The Ultimate Guide

Jennifer Lopez’s Engagement Ring and Arod

It’s no secret Jennifer Lopez has seen her fair share of over-the-top engagement rings, and every one of them has been drool-worthy. One, in particular, has been the envy of many. J.Lo’s most recent engagement ring, courtesy of now-ex, Alex Rodriguez, became Insta famous on March 9, 2019, when the couple announced their engagement.

The couple first began dating back in 2017 and gave us all the feels with their picture-perfect relationship. A-Rod popped the question during their vacation in the Bahamas with a classic sunset beach proposal. And to top it off, we got to see that beauty up close with a fantastic ring shot shared by them both online.

Here’s all we know about J.Lo’s gorgeous diamond sparkler and where you can find a ring just like it at JamesAllen.com.

We’ll share:

  1. What style J.Lo’s engagement ring is
  2. The diamond shape
  3. The diamonds carat size
  4. How much the engagement ring is worth
  5. Where you can find the lookalike

Jennifer Lopez’s Engagement Ring Pictures

The two shared this shot of them holding hands as they both show off J.Lo’s engagement ring, which is glowing as bright as the bonfire behind it. The second image is taken from a distance and manages to capture the dazzling diamond rock from afar.

What Style Setting is JLO’s Engagement Ring?

J.Lo’s sparkler is a three-stone setting featuring an emerald-cut diamond. The band is either white gold or platinum.

14K White Gold Tapered Baguette Three Stone Diamond Engagement Ring

Three-stone engagement rings are a sure way to make sure the center stone pops and shines with an intense sparkle. The two side stones not only sit flush against the center stone but truly bring out its magnificence and size.

For this particular engagement ring, A-Rod chose a three-stone setting. Three-stone rings feature two side stones that accentuate the size and brilliance of the center stone.

What Diamond Shape is JLO’s Engagement Ring?

The center stone on J.Lo’s engagement ring is an emerald-cut diamond.

Like other fancy shapes, emerald cuts are excellent at consuming much of the rough diamond’s carat weight. They’re cheaper than round-brilliant cut diamonds but require less manufacturing to be cut. That means they waste less raw material.

Emerald Cut Diamond - Viewable In 360° HD

The emerald cut has been worn, first by royalty, since the 1500s. It evolved from the table-cut and has become a preferred cut as it reduces the pressure during the cutting process, and as a result, prevents unwanted chips in the diamond.

A popular choice among celebrities, the emerald cut offers a powerful combination of understated light return and intense clarity.

This elongated shape is cut in such a way that it has a large surface area, making the wearer’s hand look elegant and slimmer, while the diamond beams from every angle.

How Many Carats is Jennifer Lopez’s Engagement Ring?

It’s clear Alex wanted his woman to have nothing but the best, and he accomplished this by getting her a massive 15-carat emerald-cut showstopper.

This diamond appears to be colorless and possibly to be collection grade quality, which is the highest diamond quality available.

How Much Did J.Lo’s Ring Cost? And What’s It Really Worth?!

While love doesn’t cost a thing in her books, J.Lo’s engagement ring certainly broke the bank. Experts estimate the diamond sparkler to have cost between $1 million to $3 million.

Looking at an emerald-cut with excellent specifications (D Color, IF Clarity) at James Allen the estimate seems accurate.

Jennifer Lopez Engagement Ring Lookalikes

This ring isn’t a complicated one to replicate, given its modest sophistication. Here are two budget-friendly, yet stunning lookalikes, that will have you looking and feeling like a star.

First, we have an almost identical match with James Allen’s tapered baguette three-stone diamond engagement ring. You can find it here

The Second is another three-stone emerald cut center but with an added flair of two more fancy-shaped diamonds. If you’re looking for something similar but not identical, then this three-stone pear-shaped J.Lo engagement ring lookalike could be the one!

Men’s Wedding Rings For Different Lifestyles

We’ve taken the time to break down all major considerations to help you find the perfect men’s wedding band to symbolize forever.

A man with white All Stars, rolling up his pant leg while showing off his wedding band.

We know how important it is to find a wedding ring that fits your unique lifestyle. There are men’s wedding bands that cater to just about any lifestyle and hobby we can think of. From classic yellow gold to stylish black wedding rings, dynamic metal options make it easier to enjoy your favorite activities without stress.

Whether you’re the kind of man who enjoys leisure or one who spends his time doing extreme sports, there is a metal and style that is the ideal fit for you. We’ve even considered that you might be both these men in one fun package – there’s a ring for that, too.

Take all your possible questions and worries, and allow us to confidently help you find the perfect wedding ring that will sit on your finger the day you say “I do.” Scroll down to see our six important factors to consider when buying the wedding ring your soon-to-be spouse will melt over. And if your partner is sitting right beside you now, remember they know best.

Make Yourself Comfy

Having a comfortable men’s wedding band is essential for any man who might be wearing this type of jewelry for the first time. A softer metal like white or yellow gold is the best option here. Men working with their hands or those in an office space will benefit most from this metal while looking great at the same time. Gold rings may need some minor buffing and polishing in the long term, but they’re a popular classic for a reason.

Both these metals are valuable and less expensive than platinum. White gold is slightly stronger with a cooler undertone, while yellow gold is more malleable and warm. One of the most comforting attributes of these metals is that they suit just about anyone and leave no room for insecurities or fuss.

Slightly Domed Comfort Fit Wedding Ring

Slightly Flattened Comfort Fit Wedding Ring

14K Yellow Gold 5.5mm Slightly Flat Comfort Fit Wedding Ring

Classy and elegant: two features that’ll never lead you wrong.

When we talk about comfortability, we’re also going beyond metal and venturing towards ring style. Familiarize yourself with the term “comfort-fit.” This term is generally used to describe a ring that has a domed interior. This style is perfect if you want to avoid irritants to your skin and uncomfortable cuts to your finger.

Titanium is also a softer metal that offers its wearer more comfort and is a lighter weight than steel. It’s perfect for family men who want a durable yet comfy metal that can survive everyday wear.

Durable For Your Lifestyle

Active lifestyles can mean anything from regular sports to high-intensity construction jobs. Investing in a ring with high durability is the only way to save yourself the grief and frustration of having to fix scratches or breaks on your wedding ring

Platinum is the first metal that comes to mind when we talk about durability. It’s rare and dense, making it suitable for rougher lifestyles. A bonus to look forward to when investing in this metal is the fact that it will likely last a lifetime while maintaining its beauty. Take it from us, this metal is perfect for men’s wedding bands and a smart buy as a future family heirloom.

Next, let’s dive into cobalt chrome™. This metal will maintain its original condition even under the most intense wear and tear. It’s lighter than platinum, making it easier to wear, and it comes in various styles.

Scratch Resistant Rings

No one enjoys seeing scratches on their property. Not on our phones, cars, and certainly not on our wedding bands. The issue is, no matter what we do, scratches appear out of nowhere regardless of what protective measures we take. This is especially true if you’re a man who enjoys the outdoors or works in an industry where bumping his ring is a given.

Fret not, we have a solution to your problem. Tungsten is, without a doubt, the most scratch-resistant metal that exists. Incredibly, the only material out there that would be able to scratch your wedding ring is a diamond. It’s a tough metal making it impossible to bend out of shape and, unfortunately, impossible to resize.

Another favorite is the metal tantalum. It’s an excellent choice for men’s engagement rings as it’s highly durable against scratching and breakage. It’s an oddly vibrant futuristic metal and is virtually indestructible. Like tungsten, this metal is perfect for men working in harsh conditions, especially fields with chemicals and heat.

Best Hypoallergenic Metals

Being active may cause your hands to sweat and develop ring rash but there are some metals that can prevent this extremely well. Keep this list of all the hypoallergenic metals in mind when you purchase your ring:

  • Tantalum and Cobalt Chrome™ (without nickel) are great for medical and chemical applications because it’s both hypoallergenic and bio-compatible.
  • Tungsten is also hypoallergenic and a great substitute for those allergic to yellow gold wedding bands.
  • Platinum is hypoallergenic and a perfect replacement for white gold men’s wedding bands because it has no traces of nickel.
  • Titanium is also safe to wear and anti-allergenic.
  • Platinum is 95% pure, making it the most hypoallergenic metal choice.
  • Ceramic contains no unwanted components in its composition.

Aesthetically Pleasing

Beauty is in the eye of the wedding band holder, and that’s why we can’t tell you which ring is the most handsome. We can, however, let you in on which of our rings frequently make the bestsellers list and those that have a little extra pizazz. After all, there’s no shame in wanting your ring to be an extension of your unique style and personality.

If you like being outside and active, it’s likely one of these metals will have a pattern that mirrors your hobby. If you prefer office life and are more easygoing, yellow and white gold, along with platinum are softer metals that can be engraved for a more personal and intimate touch.

Tantalum, Cobalt Chrome, Titanium, and Tungsten are high on the list of stylish wedding bands for men who want that extra appeal to their ring. While the classics are always timeless, these metals are making the rounds with their exciting designs and unique styles.

Affordable Quality

A wedding band isn’t an easy purchase or one you should take lightly. It’s a long-term investment in a piece of jewelry that you’ll not only be wearing forever but also represents your love and commitment. In short, it’s a pretty big deal.

Lifestyle plays a significant role in how much you’re willing to spend on your wedding band, and so let’s compare two scenarios. If you see yourself in a fast-paced, rough, and tough environment with the need for durable wear, then it’s obvious you’ll need something that is damage-resistant and low maintenance. In this case, your best option is cobalt chrome™. Its combination of affordability, durability, scratch resistance, hypoallergenic qualities, and general look makes it the best choice for very active lifestyles on a budget.

Our other scenario is that you’re the kind of man who is relatively active – not too intense – looking for a high-quality ring with extra shine and immortality. Your ideal wedding ring would be made from Platinum, the rarest metal that needs a bit of upkeep but holds great prestige.

Titanium Satin Finished Beveled Edge Wedding Ring

Fancy Shaped Diamonds: Discover Your Unique Style

Are you gearing up for that special proposal or perhaps ready to invest in new sparkle? Take a peek at our fancy shaped diamonds, and see our top picks!

Fancy diamond engagement ring

A fancy shaped diamond is a perfect choice for anyone who wants to dazzle with a trendy yet timeless diamond. If you’re not sure what these diamonds look like, don’t panic. We’ve taken the time to explain why we love our favorite diamond cuts and why you’ll fall head over heels for them, too.

We’ve covered just about any style, from elongated shapes like marquise and oval to square favorites like cushion and Asscher. Each diamond cut comes with its own pros and cons, but we’ll let you be the judge of what shape intrigues you most.

Over time, popularity shifts between which diamond shapes are going to offer the most finger space coverage and sparkle. No matter your preference, there’s a unique diamond for everyone and yearly engagement ring trends to help sway you. Keep reading to learn more about our top picks.

Oval Cut Diamonds

The oval cut is considered to be the second most popular fancy shaped diamond, after the classic round cut. This cut proves to be elegant in every way that matters and can often appear larger than it is because of its elongated shape.

Its slender body often helps to make the hand and fingers appear slimmer, a tidbit we surely can’t ignore, right, ladies? Finally, the diamond has no sharp corners, making it a better investment if you’re afraid of chipping.

Infinity Solitaire Engagement Ring

How to promise forever? With a sleek and timeless infinity solitaire engagement ring, of course.

Split Shank Ribbon Engagement Ring

14K Yellow Gold Split Shank Ribbon Engagement Ring

It’s the ribbon of pavé circling the center diamond for us.

Emerald Cut Diamonds

Emerald cut diamonds are a stunning choice for those who want clean-cut lines and symmetry. Stonecutters created this fancy shaped diamond by using the same cut as emeralds. This diamond, as a result, has a large surface area with pristine clarity, a feature that will make anyone wearing it the emerald green-envy of their friends.

One of the most famous emerald cuts sits on the hand of Queen B herself, and who doesn’t want to feel like they’re mirroring Beyonce’s style?

Petite Pavé Engagement Ring

14K White Gold Petite Pave Engagement Ring (Flush Fit)

This French cut pavé diamond engagement ring will make you shine bright from every angle with sparkling confidence.

Regal Frame Engagement Ring

18K Yellow Gold Regal Frame Diamond Engagement Ring

This engagement ring screams vintage romance.

Asscher Cut Diamonds

The Asscher cut is similar to an emerald cut, except it’s in square form with cropped corners. It pairs beautifully with smaller diamonds to create a three stone design with the asscher diamond at the center.

These stunning diamonds are clear and bright, often sparkling the way they do because of their centralized facets.

They won’t give the same finger coverage as a pear or oval shape, but their unique pattern is enchanting for anyone looking to wear vintage glamor.

Octagon Halo Engagement Ring

14K Rose Gold Octagon Halo Diamond Engagement Ring

Simple yet so expressive. This asscher-shaped center diamond, along with the pavé octagon halo, is the perfect blend of sparkle and sophistication.

Bezel & Pavé Engagement Ring

14K White Gold Antique Bezel And Pavé Set Engagement Ring

Looking for something with vintage boldness? This engagement piece is a knockout with its cleverly designed pavé and bezel accents.

Pear Shaped Diamonds

A shimmering delight is what you’ll get when wearing this pear shaped diamond. It shares a common structure with the marquise cut; the only difference is a pointed tip with a rounded edge on top. A pear cut is effortlessly graceful and never fails to get that ‘wow” reaction.

These diamonds come with a bow tie as a result of the stretching facets. As a fancy shaped diamond, this dark spot could be a stunning character feature of the piece or one that you choose to minimize by finding a long and narrow pear shape.

Prong-Set Engagement Ring

14K Rose Gold Prong Set Diamond Engagement Ring

There’s no escaping the appeal of this dynamic prong set which exposes the center and side diamonds to the most light possible to create a magical glimmer.

Laurel Leaves Engagement Ring

14K Yellow Gold Laurel Leaves Diamond Engagement Ring

A unique and earthy beauty. This piece is the perfect blend of elegance and nature and shines bright with four marquise diamonds surrounding the dazzling pear-cut diamond.

Marquise Cut Diamonds

We consider this boat-shaped diamond to be the most “fancy” as its historical heritage goes back centuries and was modeled by royalty. Known as the “navette” diamond, French for “little ship,” the marquise cut captures the eye with its point to point symmetry and Elvin sophistication.

This cut is not only perfect for diamond engagement rings but compliments other gems like sapphires, rubies, and emeralds.

Comfort Fit Solitaire Engagement Ring

14K Yellow Gold 2mm Comfort Fit Solitaire Engagement Ring (Six Prong)

Looking for a classic with a twist? This petite and elegant piece has spirit with a neat marquise cut diamond at center stage with a comfy yellow gold band.

Pavè Split Shank Engagement Ring

14K Yellow Gold Pavé Split Shank Contour Diamond Engagement Ring

Who doesn’t love a diamond-encrusted setting contouring a breathtaking marquise cut? We know we do.

Cushion Cut Diamonds

Cushion cut diamonds have a lot going for them. You’ll find these gorgeous beauties on the hands of celebrities from the likes of Gabrielle Union, to Sofia Vegara. Not only do they have a classic appeal with a rich history, but they’re overwhelmingly wholesome given their complexities.

Their soft pillow-like appearance is a pleasant contrast from our other favorite fancy shaped diamonds, which sport sharper edges. We highly recommend this shape if you’re looking for a delicate temperament diamond.

Two-Tone Solitaire Engagement Ring

14K Gold Two-Tone 2.0mm Comfort-Fit Cathedral Solitaire Engagement Ring

A two-toned ring band is a simple and fun way to wear a chic classic with a modern touch.

Three Stone Engagement Ring

14K White Gold Diamond Three Stone Ring

This engagement ring looks as durable as it does stylish. Each diamond is held in place with seamless weaving that only adds to the ring’s strapping features.
