Bezel-Set Engagement Rings: Into the Groove

Sleek, modern, and practical, bezel-set engagement rings surround your diamond with the strength of your love.

Classic engagement ring

It’s official: bezel-set engagement rings have come full circle. This beloved blast from the past has been reimagined as a contemporary ring setting.

Bezel-Set Engagement Rings:
The Bezel’s in the Detail

Simple and durable, a bezel setting encircles your diamond in a fine metal frame. Not only is this aesthetically pleasing, but it also holds your stone firmly in place.

Princess-Cut Bezel-Set

“Absolutely gorgeous…
my engagement ring is dainty, delicate, and beautiful.
-Kelsey F.

If you lead an active lifestyle or work with your hands, bezel-set engagement rings are a smart choice. The bezel itself shields your diamond from getting chipped, scratched, or, worse still, coming loose and falling out.

Beaded Bezel-Set

14K White Gold Beaded Bezel Set Diamond Engagement Ring

The setting is a versatile one; it can accommodate most diamond cuts including round, princess, and cushion. The bezel conforms to the shape of the diamond, providing a snug fit every time.

If you’d rather keep your options (and diamond) somewhat open, you can go for a ring with a semi-bezel, half-bezel, or open bezel. Obviously, these offer varying degrees of protection, depending on the completeness of the bezel.

Folded Half-Bezel

“The bezel is sleek and gorgeous, totally unique compared to other rings I see out in the world.”
-Karoline

Bezel-Set Engagement Rings: Famous Frames

Diamonds, like their celebrity owners, spend much of their lives trying to get in the frame. But which famous stones have actually made it inside the burnished borders of a bezel-set engagement ring?

Carrie Underwood: from Idol to “I do

14K White Gold Trellis Halo Diamond Engagement Ring

Trellis Bezel-Set Halo

Carrie Underwood went from Idol to “I do” after receiving a gorgeous canary diamond engagement ring from her fiancé. The striking yellow center stone is accentuated by a halo of white diamonds, and the shanks are lined with pavé diamonds.

Want to snag her sparkly look? This trellis engagement ring, with its clean lines and bright cut pavé halo, puts a vintage twist on a modern design. Venus, take the wheel!

Julia Stiles: “O” Wow

14K Yellow Gold Bezel Set Diamond Engagement Ring

There are ten things we love about Julia Stiles’ engagement ring, and her bezel setting is one of them. A classic round-cut solitaire on a yellow gold band gives the ring an understated elegance reminiscent of the actress herself. Stiles by name, styles by nature. (Sorry, we had to!)

Save the last dance for James Allen’s lookalike ring, which has a sleek, tailored design and timeless appeal.

The 10 Hottest Halo Engagement Rings

Our customers prefer to glow big and go home with these handcrafted halo engagement rings.

Halo Engagement Ring

All Hail Halo Engagement Rings!

If you’ve been following our blog, it should come as no surprise that halo engagement rings are our most-reviewed setting style. And for good reason.

Halo settings surround the center stone with an outer ring of smaller diamonds or gemstones that reflect light off the center stone, making it appear larger. This is especially useful if you’re on a tight budget and want to “supersize” the sparkle of your center stone without breaking the bank.

Halo Engagement Rings: A Galaxy of Glam

Like the rings of Saturn, halo engagement rings shine bright and can be seen from a great distance. Check out the 10 heavenly bodies our customers have been gravitating toward:

1. Cushion Outline Pavé Halo

Can’t decide between a cushion-cut or round center stone? This halo engagement ring lets you have the best of both worlds: the nostalgic outline of a cushion-cut halo as well as the brilliance of a round center diamond.

14K White Gold Cushion Outline Pave Engagement Ring
  • “My ring is amazing. I have received tons of compliments. The sparkle catches people’s eyes from a distance.” – Brian G.
  • Beautiful is truly an understatement to how perfect this ring is.” – Anthony T.

2. Falling Edge Pavé Halo

This diamond halo ring is quite literally brimming with sparkle. The pavé cascades over the edges of the shank in an impressive display of fireworks.

14K White Gold Falling Edge Pave Diamond Engagement Ring
  • “The diamond looks huge on her finger, which is a big plus! She’s received so many compliments on it.” – David G.
  • “Our ring exceeded all our expectations and was simply magnificent.” – Alexander T.

3. Pavé Halo Split Shank

This super-luxe pavé split shank ring exudes a sparkling majesty from its pavé undergallery and halo to the pavé-set diamonds along both shanks.

14K White Gold Round Split Band Diamond Halo Engagement Ring
  • “I can tell how much she loves this piece of art and enjoys all the compliments she gets every day from random people.” – Nguyen T.
  • “The ring is absolutely stunning and my fiance was (and still is) stunned by it. It’s a head-turner for sure.” – John C.

4. Classic Pavé Halo

A thin halo of pavé-set diamonds surrounds the round center diamond, making it stand out from the sleek, slight cathedral-shaped shank.

14K White Gold Pave Halo Engagement Ring
  • “It brings so much more sparkle than a normal solitaire ring while still being classy.” – Phillip H.
  • “I am so mesmerized by this ring! Such a perfect blend of elegant and simple. Modern and vintage.” – Sarah S.

5. Petite Pavé Halo

The epitome of modern elegance, this single-row pavé halo setting features an open V-bar undergallery and a single-row pavé shank.

14K White Gold Petite Diamond Halo Engagement Ring
  • “This ring is an absolute beauty that simply takes your breath away.” – Darryll T.
  • “This ring is relatively thin and delicate but pops with the halo. The halo adds that much more to the rock in the center. The way everything sparkles when the light hits it is amazing.” – Samuel L.

6. Embellished Gallery Pavé Halo

This knockout pavé setting was created with maximum light and brilliance in mind. It features a custom-designed halo that perfectly conforms to the center diamond.

Diamond Stud Earrings: Make Your Ears Pop!

Friends, romantics, customers; lend us your ears! 👂

As the first points of sparkle a person sees when they look at you, you’ll want to make sure your lobes are suitably lustrous. And there are no more elegant ear accessories than diamond studs, which make for a dazzling first impression.

Thanks to their ear-hugging design, these earrings appear to float on the earlobe as if weightless in space. Whether you opt for the classic basket or super-trendy martini style setting, you’re bound to be flushed with finesse.

Stud-y up on diamond stud earrings with our essential guide.

Diamond Stud Earrings: So Right and Yet So Prong

Diamond studs come in a choice of fab settings including pavé, martini, and basket, each offering varying degrees of comfort and style, as well as durability. To help you decide between them, let’s take a closer look at two of the more popular setting styles.

BASK IN A BASKET SETTING 🧺

Traditional four or six-prong basket settings afford a reasonably good fit. In these diamond studs, the diamond is set low in the frame, so it sits flat against the earlobe.

Four-Prong Earring Settings

18K White Gold Four Prong Stud Earrings

Timeless and stunning, round-cut diamond stud earrings add a classic elegance to any occasion.

Princess-Cut Stud Earrings

14K Yellow Gold Princess Cut Diamond Stud Earrings

Another classic pair, these stud earrings feature a princess-cut diamond set in a light four-prong wire basket.

Scallop Basket Diamond Earrings

14K Yellow Gold Scallop Basket Diamond Stud Earrings

Designed to accent the beauty of the round brilliant diamond, these earrings feature six prongs and a scalloped basket.

Bezel-Set Diamond Stud Earrings

14K Yellow Gold Bezel Diamond Stud Earrings

Well, well, well. Bezel-set diamond studs are sleek, clean, and oh-so-sturdy. They really are the perfect choice for wearers that lead active lifestyles: the bezel setting won’t snag on any fabric, and it’s arguably the most secure setting. Plus, it’s cute AF.

Pear-Shaped Diamond Stud Earrings

14K White Gold Pear Shape Diamond Stud Earrings

Gorgeous, elegant, and unique – pear-shaped diamonds are taking over the jewelry scene. These shining droplets stand out from the crowd of more common diamond shapes, especially when poised perfectly on your lobes.

Oval Diamond Stud Earrings

14K Yellow Gold Oval Shape Diamond Stud Earrings

The trendiest diamond shape of the past few years is also one of the most flattering shapes for diamond stud earrings. Its curved edges and elongated form compliment every face shape and every wardrobe.

Emerald-Cut Diamond Stud Earrings

14K White Gold Emerald Cut Diamond Stud Earrings

The emerald cut is an in-your-face shape that shows off your diamond’s crystal clarity. It’s one of the earliest established diamond cuts. As such, these emerald-cut diamond studs boast an undeniable royal feel: bold, elegant, and confident.

MARTINI SETTINGS:
SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED 🍸

Named for their conical shape, which resembles a martini glass, martini settings are very in right now due to their super-flush fit. Their narrow bottom means that the diamond can be set even closer to the earlobe than standard basket-style settings. Not only do you get a well-balanced and comfortable fit, but the low profile reveals less metal and more diamond.

Three-Prong Martini Style Earrings

18K Yellow Gold Three Prong Martini Style Stud Earrings

These martini settings are constructed to the exact size of the center diamonds, ensuring that the stones sit perfectly flush with the settings.

Double Prong Diamond Stud Earrings

14K Yellow Gold Double Prong Diamond Stud Earrings

The prong setting is a total classic. And the double prongs on these slices of bling add an understated pop of flair to a traditionally beloved setting. The minimalist prongs allow light to hit your diamond’s facets from nearly every angle.

Diamond Pavé Halo Frame Settings

14K White Gold Halo Lab Created Diamond Stud Earrings

Not your everyday diamond stud, this design combines the three-prong martini with a diamond pavé frame.

As a rule of thumb, the snugger the diamond is against the ear, the better. Besides looking more elegant and refined, a flush setting protects the diamond from undue wear and tear.

Finding Her Engagement Ring Style: A Wink & A Smile

Whether you’re a secret agent or a straight shooter, check out our pro tips for finding her engagement ring style.

finding her engagement ring style cover

Everyone has a personal style. Some are more understated than others and, therefore, harder to discern. Your job as Buyer of Rings, Proposer of Marriage, is to hone in on that style by whatever means necessary. Put on your detective hat and do some snooping around or straight up ask your partner what she’d like. Either way, finding her engagement ring style needn’t be a chore with our handy guide. Just pop on some good music and get sleuthing.

Finding Her Engagement Ring Style: Cut to the Chase

finding her engagement ring style cut to the chase

Let’s start by clearing something up: the ring doesn’t have to be a complete surprise.

There, we’ve said it.

These days, it’s perfectly acceptable – preferable even – to bring your partner into the design process. No one knows the wearer’s style better than the wearer herself, so why not involve her in the decision making? Goodness knows you’ll need all the help you can get when confronted with terms like pavé, halo, and tension! (That last one’s a setting style btw, not a headache.) By promoting your partner to Chief Ring Adviser, you’ll come across as the sensitive and considerate human being you are while eliminating much of the guesswork. It’s a win-win.

Now, the direct approach won’t work for everyone, mind you. Some customers – proposer and proposee alike – have their hearts set on a solo ring selection, culminating in the Big Reveal. To those irrepressible romantics, we say… read on!

Finding Her Engagement Ring Style: A Spy on the Wall

finding her engagement ring style spy on the wall

Like all good detectives, you’ve been waiting for the right case to come along; a case worthy of your powers of deduction. Finding her engagement ring style is right up there with #WhoBitBeyoncé and that whole Yanny vs Laurel thing – except the odds of you solving this one are far higher!

Seriously though, your partner’s online and offline activity might give away key clues about her ring preferences. If she has a Pinterest account, it’s worth checking to see if she’s created any boards with sparkle-related titles or pinned any specific rings. Assuming you have access to her Facebook account, check her profile and activity log for any ring posts she’s liked or shared.

What’s the Buzz?

Even if she’s been careful not to leave a digital trail, she may have confided in her best friend or sibling. Once you’ve got a sparkly bee in your bonnet, it’s almost impossible to keep it to yourself! Listen for subtle hints that might come up when she’s chatting with her inner circle, especially if the topic of celebrity engagement rings comes up.

Finding Her Engagement Ring Style: How She Rolls

finding her engagement ring style how she rolls

When finding her engagement ring style, it often helps to draw on your own personal experience. Presumably, you’ve spent a fair bit of time with your SO and have gleaned an insight or two about her day-to-day.

What kind of lifestyle does she lead? If she has a job or hobby that requires her to wear gloves, she’d be better off with a setting that doesn’t have exposed diamonds on the band. Solitaire and channel-set rings are both practical options as they minimize the risk of the diamonds getting caught or falling out. A less hands-on lifestyle would allow for more exposed diamonds on the band – pavé being the obvious example.

If your girl is more Devil Wears Prada than Devil Wears Nada, you might consider a more daring setting. Pay close attention to her wardrobe. If she dresses to impress and won’t touch anything unless it’s by a top designer, go for something with character, such as a vintage engagement ring or hyper-modern tension ring.

14K White Gold Presentation Solitaire (Six Prong)
Six Prong Presentation Solitaire Engagement Ring

If none of the above tips speak to you, no one would fault you for playing it safe and going with a classic style such as a solitaire. This is essentially a single center diamond mounted on a plain setting. Solitaires are considered classics for a reason: they work with practically any individual style and never go out of fashion.

Once you’ve figured out your setting style, it’s time to consider the diamond shape. If you have even the slightest doubt about what shape to get, you can’t go wrong with a round cut. Round-cut diamonds are by far the most popular shape for engagement rings, owing to their perfect geometry and abundant sparkle. These timeless classics are tried and true, but if it’s a little more edge you’re after, a princess or cushion-cut diamond should suffice.

Our last stop takes us to Kingston, Jamaica and the aptly named Hope Gardens, where churchgoers Karamo and Renee got engaged. Karamo told a blindfolded Renee they were going out for a surprise dinner and drove around in circles to disorient her. In fact, he was planning to pop the question in a part of the sunken garden that he and his friends had decorated. Not even a few brief rain showers could dampen the mood of this joyous occasion. Double Halo Engagement Rings: Twice the Ice

Why settle for a single halo when double halo engagement rings offer twice the sparkle?

double halo engagement rings cover diamond split shank pavé ring

When it comes to matters of sparkle, more is definitely more. More light play, more fireworks, more… POW! Double halos allow you to supersize your sparkle by creating the illusion of a larger stone. They use a pretty nifty trick of the light that could end up saving you $$$!

Highs & Halos: Double Halo Engagement Rings

If you’re unfamiliar, traditional halo engagement rings surround the center stone with an outer ring of smaller diamonds or gemstones. Light from these peripheral stones reflects off the center stone, creating a wonderful larger-than-life aura.

14K White Gold Triple Row Pavé Halo Engagement Ring
Triple Row Pavé Halo Engagement Ring

Double halo engagement rings, as the name suggests, are framed by not one but two outer rings of sparkle. This gives them twice the visual impact, much like the jaw-dropping beauty of a double rainbow.

Thanks to their seemingly larger appearance, double halos are a popular choice for the budget-conscious shopper who wants to wow without the ‘ow!’

Celebrity Doubles

Most celebs are used to seeing sparkle wherever they go. They see it in the camera lenses of overzealous paparazzi and they see it in the jewels they wear. Double halo engagement rings sparkle twice as hard as classic solitaires; enough to satisfy even the most fabulous of appetites.

Community star Alison Brie must’ve been seeing double when her then-boyfriend, Dave Franco, presented her with a dazzling double halo. The vintage-inspired sparkler, with its round center diamond, is one ring we hope the GLOW actress won’t be wrestling in!

Oscar winner Natalie Portman’s sparkler is as dramatic as her acclaimed turn in Black Swan. The antique round (old mine) cut diamond ring and a surrounding pavé-set double halo are ethically sourced and the platinum band is recycled metal, in line with Ms. Portman’s eco-friendly ideals. Get Closer to her style with an exquisite James Allen lookalike set with a certified conflict-free center diamond.

High School Musical alumna Ashley Tisdale graduated with double honors; a cushion-cut center stone framed by a double halo of micropavé diamonds. This showstopper of a ring features smaller diamonds along with the band, significantly upping the sparkle factor. Get twice the shine with the above James Allen lookalike.

You can choose to surround your center stone with two diamond halos or opt for contrasting colored gemstones. Finally, select a setting that matches the wearer’s personal style: solitaire bands offer a sleek, modern aesthetic, whereas decorated bands possess more of an old-world charm. If it’s the maximum shimmer you’re after, you can’t go wrong with a pavé band.

Engagement Ring Shopping: Collaboration Vs. Surprise

Breaking with tradition, many couples are engagement ring shopping together, leaving the element of surprise for the proposal.

engagement ring shopping cover

The question of whether to surprise your SO with a ring or include them in the selection process is as old as time.

Well, that’s not strictly true.

It actually came about rather recently, with online engagement ring shopping offering a far more collaborative experience than traditional stores. But back to the question at hand: to surprise or not to surprise? That will largely depend on whether your SO is more of a romantic or a realist.

If they’re the type to swoon at the end of romantic movies, chances are they’re holding out for a sparkling surprise of their own. Then again, if your SO is the risk-averse type, they will probably prefer to be consulted on an item of such personal significance.

Engagement Ring Shopping: Surprise and Shine

engagement ring shopping falling edge pavé diamond
Falling Edge Pavé Diamond Engagement Ring

If your SO leaves the engagement ring shopping entirely up to you, they’re taking the jewelry equivalent of a trust fall. That is, they’re trusting you to choose what is sure to be their most prized possession; an accessory they’ll be wearing every day of their life. This might seem daunting at first, but it’s actually quite an honor and an opportunity to demonstrate how perceptive you are. If you have a tendency to notice small details, you’ll easily pick up on the trail of sparkly clues your partner has left behind

See what happens when couples try to design their partners’ dream engagement ring (spoiler alert: hilarity ensues!).

Can You Take a Hint?

engagement ring shopping can you take hint

If only there was some way to read the inner workings of your partner’s mind… to understand what they really mean when they say, “I’m marrying you, not the ring.” While that technology may still be a few years off, we do have a nifty drop-a-hint feature on JamesAllen.com. It’s a subtle way for your SO to let you know exactly what they want without the awkwardness of them having to say it.

Of course, there are other tried-and-tested ways to drop a hint that you should be on the lookout for. “Forgetting” to close the browser is a classic, but they may share their Pinterest boards with you or casually comment on a friend’s or celebrity’s engagement ring.

Engagement Ring Shopping: Band Together

engagement ring shopping band together

A recent study by The Knot found that roughly one third of couples collaborate on the engagement ring with their mates. People are starting to realize that the proposee is every bit as qualified to make the Big Decision as the proposer – if not more so. If your SO has expressed an interest in being involved beyond mere hint dropping, you’d be wise to take them up on the offer. After all, who better to advise you on ring style than the ring wearer herself?

Without a doubt, the best way to know your partner’s ring preferences is to have an open and honest conversation with them. If all goes well, try engagement ring shopping together and make mental notes of their ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs.’ Even if they do have a hand in selecting their ring online, they won’t know how it looks IRL until the big unveiling. With a bit of clever subterfuge, it’s still possible to throw your SO off the scent.

Help Is at Hand

engagement ring shopping help is at hand

If you’d rather collaborate with someone other than your SO, our Customer Service team is there for you 24/7 by live chat, phone, and email. They’ll help you pick out the ideal ring based on your partner’s particulars (don’t worry, you already know all the answers to their questions!). You can even request a Real-Time Diamond Inspection with a certified gemologist who will be happy to walk you through the finer points of your sparkler. And if you still want some face-to-face expert advice, visit our Georgetown, DC location.

Engagement Ring Shopping: Trust Your Instincts

The bottom line is that your shopping experience should be as comfortable as the ring on your true love’s finger. Go with whichever option feels right to you as a couple and then make it as gosh darn romantic as you possibly can!

Catch up on our proposal series, which covers everything from choosing the perfect sparkler to planning the magical moment itself.

choosing engagement ring diamond

Choosing a Diamond: Be in the Glow

Precious advice for those who will soon be choosing a diamond for their engagement ring.

How to choose a diamond

We recognize that gleam in your eye! No, we’re not talking about the way you look at your SO (although that is adorable). If there’s one thing capable of making a person’s eyes light up like that, it’s diamonds. Those pretty little stones you know nothing about, but are determined to get a good deal on.

And where better to start than our men’s FAQ series? In this first installment, we look at choosing a diamond; from understanding the 4Cs to getting the most bling for your buck.

Choosing a Diamond: Foresee the 4Cs

It’s impossible to talk diamonds without mentioning the 4Cs: cut, color, carat, and clarity. Together, these all-important characteristics influence a diamond’s quality and value. They are your new best friends. Get to know them. Go have a beer with them. Whatever you have to do.

    • Cut – This refers to both the diamond’s shape and how effectively it returns light to the viewer’s eye.
    • Color – This is generally something you want to avoid in a diamond, unless it’s a fancy color diamond (more on that later).
    • Carat – This is the unit of measurement by which diamonds are weighed and sold.
  • Clarity – This refers to how clean a diamond is and whether it has visible imperfections.

When in doubt, start with a diamond cut. This is the one area you should never compromise on as it determines how sparkly the stone is.

“I want my ring to sparkle less.”
– No one, ever

If you have to compromise on anything, let it be diamond clarity. However, try to avoid going below a VS1 clarity grade; anything lower would be visible to the naked eye.

Choosing a Diamond: Appearances Can Be Gleaming

Let’s be real for a moment, shall we? No one buys a diamond engagement ring for their SO without wanting to impress their socks off. It’s the ultimate declaration of your love, so of course you’ll want to go all out and snag the biggest, most sparkly rock you can afford.

While celebs are known for flashing ridiculous amounts of sparkle, you don’t always need to pay top dollar to enjoy those megawatt flashes. If you’re on a budget, there are a number of ways to make even a modest diamond appear larger than it actually is. Sneaky, we know!

One way to get more bling for your buck is to opt for an undersized diamond. Now, that might sound counterintuitive – how can a smaller diamond appear the same size as a larger one to the naked eye? By choosing a diamond that’s just shy of the standard industry cutoff points, you could save yourself a pretty penny, without compromising on sparkle. Consider a 0.9 carat diamond and a 1 carat diamond with comparable specs. On the surface, both stones appear to be virtually the same size, but look closer at the price tags and you’ll see a considerable saving on the smaller stone. Similar carat weight, less cash. Booyah!

14K White Gold Round Split Band Diamond Halo Engagement Ring

Another way to appear more sparkly is to choose a setting style that accentuates the center diamond. Halo engagement rings, for example, surround the center stone with an outer ring of smaller diamonds or gemstones. These peripheral stones reflect light off the center stone, giving it a greater presence on the hand. Halo engagement rings come in single and double halo varieties, depending on how far you want to glow… er… go.

For more sparkle-maximizing tips, read up on how to make your diamond engagement ring look bigger.

Choosing a Diamond: Appraise Where It’s Due

Choosing engagement ring diamond appraisal

A diamond appraisal is necessary if you want to get your ring insured – which, btw, you totally should! It differs from the GIA or AGS diamond grading certificate that comes with your ring in that it provides a dollar estimate rather than the technical info.

At JamesAllen.com, we offer a complimentary insurance evaluation on any diamond engagement ring valued at $1,000 or higher. If you prefer, you’re welcome to get the diamond independently appraised as well.

Choosing a Diamond: Color Outside the Shines

James Allen's Yellow diamond

If your head isn’t already spinning at 360° like our diamonds, we’re about to throw another curveball at you: fancy color diamonds. While colorless diamonds have traditionally been the objects of our affection, their colorful cousins are steadily gaining popularity. And because stones at the vivid ends of the color spectrum are quite rare, they’re more valuable too.

When choosing a diamond, pay close attention to your partner’s personal style. If they’re the free-spirited, artistic type, a diamond in their favorite color could make for an exceptionally meaningful gift. Read more about fancy color diamonds.

All about November Birthstone with James Allen’s tips

Citrine, the November birthstone, is one of the top-selling yellow gemstones. Here’s why.

14K Yellow Gold Cushion Cut Madeira Citrine Checkerboard Leverback Earrings

If you’re a lover of citrus fruit and earth tones in general, you’re in for a real treat with this month’s birthstone. Introducing citrine, the vitamin C of gemstones. Citrine gets its succulent-sounding name from its lemon-yellow coloration.

Wearers of the November birthstone are said to experience enlightenment, optimism, warmth, and clarity, as well as a decrease in negative energy. It’s also thought to aid in healing the physical self.

Like amethyst, citrine is a variety of quartz – one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s crust. Its yellow-to-orange hues are caused by trace amounts of iron in its crystal structure.

Don’t worry, you won’t be tested on any of this!

November Birthstone: Few and Far Citrine

Given the abundance and variety of quartz, you’d be forgiven for thinking that citrine, too, is a common gemstone. However, natural yellow citrine is actually quite rare.

Nevertheless, the November birthstone is relatively affordable, so you can get a much larger, more ornate stone for your dollar. Citrine’s value is not determined by size, but rather by the intensity of color. The more intense the color, the more expensive the stone.

Pro tip: Citrine is often mistaken for the more valuable gemstone topaz, which has a similar appearance. Make sure you’re not overpaying for citrine mislabeled as topaz.

Kate Middleton may officially go by The Duchess of Cambridge, but we know her simply as the Queen of Citrine. Her ring is estimated to be around five to seven carats, yet surprisingly light on the purse strings.

Another celeb to say Hello to the November birthstone is Adele. The Grammy Award winner swears by citrine and won’t perform without it. She goes so far as to attribute the success of her live shows to the crystal’s supposed powers.

Pear Shaped Diamonds with Fruitful Flare

Pear shaped diamonds the only part of your engagement you’ll want to go pear shaped!

Pavé Halo Shank Diamond Engagement Ring

Imagine if Eve had picked a pear in the Garden of Eden instead of that darn apple. She would’ve stood out from all the other women (had there been any other women) and been hailed a trendsetter. Still, it’s never too late to make amends and pear shaped diamonds are the perfect sparkle offering.

Love is in the pear!

Pear Shaped Diamonds: Ripe for the Picking

So, what makes a pear a pear? The unique shape is achieved by combining two other diamond cuts: round brilliant and marquise. At one end, you have the gentle curves of a round cut; at the other, the pointed charm of a marquise. Best of all, it retains much of the sparkle of a round cut, despite not conforming exactly to that shape.

Grab yourself a piece of this low-hanging fruit!

A Diamond Beyond Compear

If further pearsuasion is needed, choosing a non-traditional diamond shape like pear can actually save you money! That’s right; because the demand for pear is lower than for round brilliant, it tends to offer better value. A pear shaped diamond could save you as much as 25% compared to a round cut of the same size and quality. How sweet is that?!

Hot take: Pair your pear with a solitaire for a classic setting that’s both affordable and offers maximum light return through the top of the stone.

Pear to Spare

Thanks to their elongated lines, pear shape diamonds tend to look larger than other shapes of the same carat weight. On the other hand, they gently accentuate slender fingers and make shorter fingers appear longer and slimmer.

Who Rocks Pear Shaped Diamonds?

2018 is shaping up to be the year of the pear! Paris Hilton (or should that be Pearis Hilton?) got the party started back in January when she said yes to a juicy 20-carat pear shaped diamond engagement ring. Of course, she’s not alone in her penchant for pear. Other personalities include Ariana Grande, Kaley Cuoco, Cardi B, Sophie Turner, Victoria Beckham, Zoe Saldana, Katherine Heigl, and Margot Robbie.

See which other non-traditional diamond shapes are in with celebs right now.

What is a Pear Shaped Diamond?

When purchasing a pear shaped diamond, it helps to know which attributes to look out for. That way, you can avoid pulling an Eve and picking the wrong piece!

Cut To minimize the undesirable ‘bow tie’ effect commonly found in pear shaped diamonds, ensure the diamond cut is as symmetrical as possible. It’s more aesthetic plus it returns more light and sparkle back to your eyes.

Color The pointed end of the diamond doesn’t reflect light nearly as well as the round part, so it’s more likely to reveal the stone’s true color. To avoid those ‘warmer’ yellow tones, opt for a high grade on the color scale (no lower than G).

Clarity As with color, any inclusions are more visible if they occur at the pointed end of the diamond, where there are less sparkle and scintillation. You’re better off going for an ‘eye clean’ diamond with a clarity grade of VS2 or above.

Carat The carat weight you choose will largely depend on your budget, but this is not the be-all and end-all. An increase in carat size will often appear negligible, yet raise the price significantly. Far more important are cut, color, and clarity in determining a diamond’s overall beauty.

If eyes are the window to the soul, then marquise cut diamonds are the sparkly window dressing. These eye-shaped beauties, with their curved sides and pointed ends, give the appearance of a watchful guardian protecting the wearer from a life less lustrous.

Seize the marquise!

Marquise Cut Diamonds: Ahead of the Curve

Like the gentle outline of oval cut diamonds, but want to score some extra brownie points with your SO? Point your attention to marquise cut diamonds, which are blessed with not one but two points — one at either end.

Typically set in a ‘north/south’ orientation, the marquise cut makes fingers seem longer and more slender. Its elongated shape also creates the illusion of a larger stone, carat for carat, especially when set with round or pear-shaped side stones.

What to Know About Marquise Cut Diamonds?

Okay. So, you’ve set your heart on a magnificent marquise for your main squeeze. Now what? To ensure you’re getting the most attractive stone for your money, consider the following:

Go Deep as Your Love Choose a diamond that hasn’t been cut too shallow, otherwise light could leak through the stone diminishing its fire and brilliance.

Get Symmetrical Both endpoints of a marquise cut diamond should be perfectly aligned; otherwise, they can throw the stone off balance once it’s mounted in the setting.

Beware the Bow Tie Marquise cuts tend to produce a darkened area at the center of the gem that resembles a bow tie. A well-polished brilliant cut diamond should hide this undesirable effect.

Block Off the Old Chip Like any diamond cut with exposed corners, the ends of a marquise cut need securing. V-tip prongs are widely considered to offer the best protection from chipping.

When planning a romantic getaway, three L’s come to mind: Location, Location, Location. This makes sense as without a suitable destination, you’d still be, well, at home! But there’s a fourth L that no travel checklist is complete without: Luster. As in, how to keep your engagement ring looking at its lustrous best while you and bae are off galavanting around the world.

Engagement Ring Care: Precious Cargo

18K White Gold Floral Halo Engagement Ring

The first thing to do before taking your sparkler on vacation is to make sure it’s covered by your insurance policy. You do have one, right? Good. Just checking. Whether it comes under your home insurance or its own separate policy, make sure that you’re covered for theft, loss, or damage while away. If not, you may need to adjust your policy to include overseas travel. It’s advisable to take proof of ownership with you on your trip in case you’re stopped at customs. A copy of the receipt or the insurance policy should suffice.

Engagement Ring Care: Off with the Ring!

When you finally receive the ring of your dreams, it’s hard to imagine ever wanting to take it off. But there are certain situations when it’s necessary to de-jewel.

Handle with Care

14K White Gold Pavé Halo Diamond Engagement Ring (Oval Center)
Pavé-Set Halo Engagement Ring

Unless you’re Mariah Carey, traveling often involves hauling your own luggage around. The stress this puts on your ring can stretch the band and even bend or break the delicate prongs. That’s why you should take extra care when lifting anything heavy.

Swimming in Sparkle

engagement ring care swimming in sparkle

Although the beach is a romantic destination for newly engaged couples, it’s less than ideal for the engagement ring itself. If the sea is cold enough to shrink your fingers, your ring could slip right off. If you stay on dry land, grains of sand could get caught between the ring setting and the diamond. This won’t harm the stone per se, as diamonds are pretty tough, but that doesn’t mean you should put it through needless wear and tear.

What about putting your engagement ring in an airtight plastic bag, I hear you cry? This might seem like a clever hack, but the lack of oxygen together with the heat from the sun may cause the metal to fuse with the plastic. You’d be much better off leaving your diamond ring in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, such as your hotel room safe.

Losing your ring in a swimming pool is less risky than the open sea as it would most likely turn up once the pool has been drained. However, harsh chemicals in the water like chlorine can severely discolor/corrode gold and silver over time. Only platinum is durable enough that it can withstand most chemicals.

Sunscreen. Great for your skin, not so great for your bling. By all means, slather it all over yourself (sunburn is not a sexy look), but for the love of sparkle, remove your ring first! The same goes for lotions and perfumes, which can cause your precious stone to cloud up.

Fake It, Don’t Break It!

If the thought of taking your engagement ring on vacation seems too daunting, why not switch it with a fake one? Get one that closely resembles your sparkler’s setting style and diamond cut for a fraction of the price. It’s a relatively inexpensive solution that could end up saving you sleepless nights and potential financial loss.

Men’s Wedding Bands: The Complete Guide

Know what to look out for when shopping men’s wedding bands.

A guy with a bow tie and with a wedding ring for men

Men’s wedding bands often get outshined by the sparkle-fest that is the engagement ring. But these boy bands are more than mere one-hit wonders. They’re likely the single most important piece of jewelry you’ll ever own. You owe it to yourself to explore all your options before settling down with your lustrous loop.

Wedding Rings for Men: Test Your Metal

First thing’s first: decide on a metal. If you’re the conventional type, you can’t go wrong with a traditional gold or platinum wedding ring. Gold rings are known for their distinct character; yellow gold’s warm glow, white gold’s snowy purity, and rose gold’s unique vintage look. Men’s platinum wedding bands, while similar in appearance to men’s white gold wedding bands, are very rare and exceptionally hardwearing.

When choosing a metal for your wedding band, there’s more to consider than cost alone. Think about how it will look next to your partner’s ring. Do you want them to match or do you prefer a contrast? How much maintenance is required? (The ring, not your partner!) Are you allergic to any of the materials? The last thing you want to do is make a rash decision about such an important purchase.

If you’re more of a trendy non-conformist, an alternative metal such as titanium or cobalt chrome might float your boat. Men’s titanium wedding bands are a popular option as they’re durable enough to withstand the rigors of daily life, yet surprisingly lightweight.

Black Titanium Comfort Fit Ring

Crafted from aircraft-grade titanium, this Black wedding band for men is sophisticated and undeniably eye-catching.

Cobalt chrome is another solid choice. Literally. It’s four times harder than gold and has a non-corrosive, scratch-resistant surface. Like titanium, cobalt is a hypoallergenic metal, making it suitable for those with sensitive skin (we’re looking at you, tough guy!).

Cobalt Chrome Comfort Fit Ring

This Cobalt Chrome Comfort Fit Ring features a natural and long-lasting high luster that won’t fade or discolor over time.

Wedding Rings for Men: A Broad Band

The width of your wedding ring is entirely a matter of personal style. However, as a general rule of thumb, those with larger hands are better off going with a thicker wedding ring, and vice versa. Because wider rings require more precious metal, they tend to be more expensive. Pro tip: Offset the cost of a larger ring by choosing a more affordable metal. White gold, for instance, looks very similar to platinum but costs less.

Wedding Rings for Men: The Finishing Touch

Wedding rings for men owe their handsome appearance in large part to the texture, or finish, of the metal. James Allen wedding rings come in all different finishes including high polish, satin, and hammered. A high polish finish is considered a traditional choice whereas satin might appeal more to lovers of contemporary design. If you’re looking for something that’s off the beaten path, the hammered look is bound to get your heart pounding.

Wedding Rings for Men: The Bevel’s in the Detailing

Wedding rings for men have come a long way in recent years, shedding their bland band reputation in favor of more daring designs. These days, it’s not uncommon to see rings sporting diamond or gemstone accents.

Wedding Rings for Men: Make Your Mark

If you want to make your wedding ring extra meaningful, why not personalize it with a loving inscription? James Allen offers free engraving on most of its wedding bands. Have your SO’s name or initials etched in the metal, a song lyric or inside joke, or the date of your wedding. Now there’s no excuse for forgetting your anniversary!

Emerald cut, not to be confused with the vivid green gemstone of the same name, is a diamond cut known for its beauty and precision. An increasingly popular shape for engagement rings, emerald cut has charmed its way onto our fingers and into our hearts.

Emerald Cut Diamonds: Why the Long Facet?

It’s not hard to see the appeal of emerald cut diamonds. Elegant long lines give them a look of subtle sophistication, while beveled corners add a touch of timeless glamour.

Step Up Your Game

The emerald cut diamond is so named because this style of cut was originally reserved for — you guessed it — emeralds. It’s created using a step cut, which is most commonly associated with square or rectangular diamonds. Unlike brilliant cut diamonds, which are distinguished by triangular and kite-shaped facets, step-cut diamonds have rows of long, narrow facets that resemble a staircase.

Celebrity engagement ring trends show that emerald cut has overtaken oval as the fashionable go-to among celebs. Those flashing the cut include Liv Tyler, Kristen Bell, Sarah Jessica Parker, Anne Hathaway, Hayden Panettiere, and Amal Clooney.

What to Know About Emerald Cut Diamonds

If you’re in the market for an emerald cut diamond, you should take the following points into consideration:

  • Flaws, or inclusions, are more noticeable in step-cut diamonds, so it’s well worth investing in a high clarity grade.
  • Pay attention to diamond color, which tends to be more prominent in less sparkly stones.
  • Emerald cut diamonds can be set vertically or, for a more original look, turned ninety degrees on their side (this is known as the “east-west” setting).
  • Step-cut diamonds will usually cost less than their brilliant-cut cousins.

Shape Series: Radiant Cut Diamonds

We reveal why radiant cut diamonds are something squarish you’ll want to cherish.

Pavé-Set Engagement Ring

If the adage “opposites attract” could be summed up in one diamond cut, it would have to be radiant. This sparkling cut marries an angular shape with brilliant cut facets, creating a look that’s at once classic and complex.

Find your radiant cut diamond.

Why Radiant Cut Diamonds?

Radiant cut diamonds are the sparkly love child of round brilliant and emerald cut diamonds. They are faceted like the former and shaped like the latter, giving you the best of both worlds.

18K Yellow Gold Twisted Pavé Shank Contemporary Diamond Engagement Ring

Disclaimer: No corners were cut in the polishing of this stylish solitaire (at least not in the figurative sense!).

Made up of a staggering 70 facets on their pavilion and crown, radiant cut diamonds can disperse a good deal more light than other square and rectangular-shaped stones. As such, they provide way more brilliance and fire than you’d find in traditional step-cut diamonds.

Platinum Octagon Halo Diamond Engagement Ring

What of color and clarity?

The radiant cut is something of a chameleon when it comes to color. It has that rare ability to alter a diamond’s hue, making it appear lighter or darker when viewed from above. In terms of clarity, radiant cut has a higher tolerance for inclusions than, say, emerald cut, which demands a much higher level of clarity.

Who Rocks Radiant Cut Diamonds?

Chicago Cubs infielder Javy Baez recently proposed to his girlfriend Irmaire Marquez with this stunning James Allen ring, complete with a 3-carat radiant cut diamond:

But he wasn’t the only Cubs player to go down the radiant route. First baseman Anthony Rizzo gifted his girlfriend Emily Vakos with a radiant cut diamond engagement ring, much like this one:

Let’s Get Salient About Radiant

If you’ve read this far, it’s probably safe to assume that radiant cut diamonds are squarely on your radar. Here are some important things to consider when picking out a stone.

  • A well-proportioned radiant cut diamond with centered culet and even sides will appear larger than it really is.
  • Radiant cut is more durable than other diamond cuts as there are no brittle corners left exposed — perfect if you lead an active lifestyle.
  • Thanks to their incredible depth and evenness of color, radiant cut diamonds are often graded as fancy color diamonds, which only adds to their appeal.

Don’t forget — you can view all of the radiant cut diamonds on JamesAllen.com in glorious 360° HD at up to 40x SuperZoom.
