High Karat Gold: The Complete Guide To Understanding Gold Quality

High Karat Gold: The Complete Guide To Understanding Gold Quality

Since 2006, as a leading e-commerce jewelry and loose diamond retailer, we’ve had the privilege of helping numerous customers deepen their understanding of gold jewelry.

From Karat to Carat, and the measurement of the purity of gold, it’s totally understandable they can all be confusing. Ready to learn more about high karat gold? Let’s dive right in!

Gold Jewelry

What is a Karat?

Karat is outlined as a measurement of the purity of gold. In the world of fine jewelry, understanding gold’s purity is essential.

Think of 24 karat (24K) gold as nature’s gold, untouched and pure with no other metals. While 18 karat (18K) gold is 75% of that pristine gold, blended with 25% of other fine metals. There’s also 14 karat (14K) gold, which contains 58.3% gold and 41.7% other alloys. Lastly, 10 karat (10K) gold, is often considered to be the least pure gold on the market for ‘gold jewelry’. Gold accounts for 41.7% of its composition, while other metals make up 58.3%.

At JamesAllen.com, we believe in precision and authenticity. While these percentages do vary slightly, it’s important to remember that this may be the case as jewelers perfect their craft finding the perfectly toned metal that works best for them. However, any gold jewelry labeled with a specific karat will closely align with the standards set by the millesimal fineness chart.

What’s the Difference Between Karat and Carat?

“Karat” and “Carat” are two terms that are often confused with one another. For a better understanding, keep scrolling.

Gold Terms to Know

Karat (K): A unit of measurement used to express the purity of gold in an alloy. Pure gold is 24 karats, while alloys are represented as fractions of 24.

Alloy: A mixture of two or more metals, often used in combination with gold to enhance its properties like strength and color.

Hallmark: A stamped mark on gold items that indicates their purity and authenticity, usually accompanied by the karatage (e.g., “18K”).

Assay: The process of analyzing the composition of a metal to determine its purity.

Fining: A process used to remove impurities from gold by melting it with substances like borax or saltpeter.

Malleability: The property of gold that allows it to be hammered, rolled, or shaped without breaking.

Gold Plating: The process of depositing a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal through electroplating.

Refining: The process of purifying raw gold through various chemical and physical processes to remove impurities.

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of High Karat Gold?

The allure of high karat gold is undeniable, but how does it fare in practical terms? Let’s unravel some of the advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages Disadvantages
Contains fewer alloy metalsGenerally more expensive
Has a rich and vibrant hue Prone to scratches and dents
Pure gold does not tarnish or corrodeUsually requires frequent polishing and reshaping due to its softness
Unlikely to cause allergic reactionsMore challenging to resize compared to lower carat jewelry pieces

How to Choose the Best Karat for You

When choosing your gold jewelry karat, it’s important to think about your style and the item’s function. For pieces such as engagement or wedding rings, you’ll want 18K gold at the very least due to the balance between its purity and durability. Since we use our hands on a daily basis, it’s easy for rings to be scuffed on a daily basis.

In contrast, when it comes to jewelry items that are less susceptible to damage, such as earrings or pendants, it’s entirely reasonable to indulge in 24K designs. These pieces usually rest gently on the body, minimizing the risks of scratches or dents.

What Is Gold Purity?

Gold purity refers to the proportion of actual gold content within a given item or alloy. It is an important metric in the jewelry industry that helps to indicate the quality and value of a gold piece.

This purity is commonly measured in two main ways: first through the karat system, which scales from 1 to 24 (with 24 karats indicating pure gold), and the millesimal fineness, which is measured in parts per thousand. For instance, in the karat system, 18K gold signifies that the alloy is made up of 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals.

Understanding gold purity helps consumers gauge the authenticity, value, and quality of their gold possessions.

What Is the Difference Between Pure and High Karat Gold?

Each piece of jewelry is characterized by its karat or the amount of pure gold used. Pure or 24-karat gold is 100% pure gold. And, high karat gold refers to any piece with more than ten karats of pure gold. Generally, high-end jewelry is made with at least 10K gold.

What Is the Highest Karat of Gold?

The highest karat of gold is 24K gold. 24-karat gold is 100% pure and does not contain any other metals. This makes it the purest gold available, meaning, it has zero impurities and is usually softer than lower karats such as 10K and 14K.

As we mentioned previously, gold comes in various karat levels, indicating its purity. The higher the karat, the less the metal is mixed with other metals during refinement. While 24K gold has the highest purity, its ability to bend restricts its use in jewelry pieces like wedding bands, especially when detailed designs or subtle curves are desired. On the other hand, 10K gold, comprising of 41.7% pure gold, is celebrated for its durability and is frequently chosen for crafting jewelry.

Does a Higher Karat Mean Higher Quality Gold?

You may have heard that 24K gold is the “highest” karat gold. But high karat doesn’t directly translate to higher quality. But let’s break it all down for you. It does mean that 24K gold has more actual gold in it compared to, say, 14K or 10K. That makes it more valuable, sure, but not always “better” for every purpose.

Here’s why: 24K gold is super soft. Imagine trying to make a sculpture with soft clay versus firm clay. The softer it is, the trickier it gets. That’s why you don’t see a lot of jewelry made from 24K gold. On the flip side, 18K gold hits that sweet spot. It’s both gorgeous to look at and strong enough for pieces like rings, earrings, and bracelets. Think of it as the MVP in the gold world – bringing both beauty and strength to the table.

How Can You Tell if Gold Is Real?

  • The best way is to take your gold jewelry to a reputable jeweler who can test it
  • Check to see if it has been stamped (real gold should be stamped somewhere with its karat measurement (usually 10K, 14K, or 18K).
  • Alternatively, fill a bowl or glass with water, and drop the gold into it. If it floats, it’s not real gold. It’s likely genuine if it sinks since real gold is quite heavy.

FAQs

Can I wear high-karat gold jewelry every day?

Yes, of course, you can wear high-karat gold jewelry every day! However, it’s important to note that due to its purity and softness, it is more susceptible to scratches and dents. Such jewelry should be handled with caution during activities that could damage it.

How do I determine the authenticity of karat gold jewelry?

To determine the authenticity of karat gold jewelry, firstly, you check for a hallmark or stamp indicating the gold’s purity, e.g., “14k” or “18k”. You can also make sure to buy from reputable sources or brands to ensure quality and authenticity. Otherwise, consider having your gold jewelry tested by a professional jeweler.

Does a Higher Karat Mean Higher Quality Gold?

Yes. In general, a higher karat indicates a greater percentage of gold in the alloy and, therefore, a higher degree of purity. For instance, 24-karat gold is considered pure gold, while 18-karat gold contains 75% gold. Quality is subjective; even though higher-karat gold is purer, it may be less durable in certain jewelry applications due to its softer nature.

What Are The Different Colors Of Gold?

Gold will forever be a timeless favorite for jewelry wearers. However, although gold is often mistaken for only being yellow, its beautiful and diverse shades and hues can sometimes be overwhelming.

What Are The Different Colors Of Gold?

Keep reading to find out all there is to know about the different colors of gold. Plus, we’ll assist you in finding out which color of gold color for your next piece of jewelry.

What Is Gold?

Gold is a valuable element steeped in a rich history of wealth and affluence. It is a dense precious metal labeled Au on the periodic table of elements. In its purest state, it gleams with a radiant yellow color and is highly durable and malleable. Gold is often naturally found in a pure form.

Embedded within the Earth’s crust, this precious metal is widespread within various igneous rock formations, although in relatively low concentrations.

What Is Colored Gold?

Since pure gold is highly malleable, it cannot be used for jewelry production by itself. To make practical jewelry that can withstand everyday wear, gold must be combined with other metals called alloys. Silver, copper, and palladium are the most common alloys used to solidify gold. When blended with varying proportions of gold, these alloys produce various shades and radiant hues.

Aside from its resilience, gold has many other valuable features. Here are just a few reasons why gold is the most popular choice for jewelry around the world:

  • It doesn’t tarnish
  • It’s durable enough to last a lifetime
  • Beautifully crafted
  • It has traditionally been associated with societal status and a symbol of wealth

Most people believe gold is only available in three colors – yellow, white, and rose. Although those are the most popular, did you know gold comes in many other hues, such as black, purple, and green?

What Are Karats Of Gold?

Karats, abbreviated as ‘k,’ is a measurement unit that marks gold’s purity (content) when alloyed with other metals. When gold is at its purest, it is labeled 24k. However, you’ll unlikely see this on jewelry as it’s too soft for practical use.

Knowing what each karat type means and how it affects the price tag is so important when purchasing gold jewelry. In different parts of the world, minimum karat requirements for gold-labeled jewelry vary, although there are no maximum karat requirements. For instance, in the United States, gold jewelry must be at least 10k, whereas, in the UK and France, the minimum is 9k.

Let’s take a closer look at the standard Karat measurements.

Karat measurement chart

The Origin of Gold

Colored gold dates back centuries, including early references to rose gold being used as far back as the first millennium. As the 19th century progressed, Carl Faberge, jewelry to the czars, popularized rose gold with his decorated Faberge eggs. Then during the early 1900s, rose gold was widely used by women of high social status for fine jewelry and engagement rings.

What Are The Different Shades of Gold?

Did you know that gold comes in various rainbow shades? While some gold colors are purer than others, the rare shades are available for your favorite jewelry pieces. Let’s take a look:

Common Gold Shades

Although each shade of gold varies in color subtly, eight main types of gold are used to make jewelry. Here is a closer look at each one.

  • Yellow gold is what most people think of when they imagine pure gold. Yellow gold comes in a variety of karats and price points. However, because pure gold is too soft to be used on its own, silver and copper are added in varying ratios to produce the yellow color seen primarily in jewelry.
  • White gold is actually a broad term that contains many colors of gold. White gold is produced by mixing pure gold with white metals such as silver, nickel, and palladium. White gold comes in a wide range of karats and, therefore, a variety of prices due to its diverse nature.
  • Rose gold is a gold-copper alloy closely related to red and pink gold. Differences are based on the ratio of gold to copper and whether or not silver is added. Since rose gold contains copper, it is not hypo-allergenic, so be sure you or the recipient will be comfortable wearing it.

Rare Shades Of Gold

  • Purple gold is a variation that results from mixing gold and aluminum. But it is less commonly used in jewelry due to brittleness.
  • Green gold is one of the most common gold shades, containing pure gold, copper, silver, and zinc. There are different shades of green gold varying from soft to deep green. This depends on the alloy used. Historically, green gold has had some incredible uses.
  • Blue gold is one of the less common gold shades that combines gold and indium, gallium, or iron.
  • Grey gold is a type of white gold created by combining pure gold with copper, manganese, silver, or iron.
  • Black gold is a shade created through various methods. For example, cobalt oxide involves mixing pure gold with cobalt and heating it at a specific temperature. Another way to make black gold is by electroplating, where gold jewelry is plated with a black finish – usually rhodium or ruthenium.

What’s The Best Shade of Gold?

The best shade of gold is completely subjective and depends on personal preference, which can be based on individual style and fashion sense. While some may prefer a rich hue, others lean towards a pale tone.

While white gold engagement rings have been very popular for many years, yellow gold engagement rings will always remain a classic and timeless choice. In addition, the romantic and modern charm of rose gold ring styles is a gorgeous yet unique choice too, especially when paired with beautiful gemstones.

Ultimately, the best shade of gold is the one that complements the wearer’s skin tone, and aesthetic preferences, creating a stylish and treasured jewelry piece.

How To Pick The Right Engagement Ring For Your Skin Tone

How To Pick The Right Engagement Ring For Your Skin Tone

Is it time to start engagement ring shopping? Congratulations!

With so many options available, making such a big decision can sometimes be overwhelming. Not sure where to start? That’s why we’re here! Learn how to pick the perfect engagement ring for your skin tone.

How To Pick The Right Engagement Ring For Your Skin Tone

One important factor to consider when shopping for your ring is your skin tone. Your skin tone can greatly impact how different metals and gemstone colors look against your skin.

The Importance of Skin Tone

Mixing metals is no longer a faux pas, but some hues bring out the best of your gorgeous, natural beauty. So, selecting the perfect piece of fine jewelry or metal for your dream engagement ring can’t be underestimated.

So, why does this matter? The reason is that different metals either clash or complement different undertones. As the metal surrounding your gemstones or diamond rests directly against your skin, it can significantly impact how well you look when wearing your jewelry.

How to Determine Your Skin Tone

A common misconception is that skin tone and skin color are one or the same thing. Even though they are quite similar, slight differences set them apart.

Let us explain: When you look at your skin, what you see is color, not tone. Your skin color only applies to the outer layer of the skin and is easily affected by weather or any environmental factor.

On the other hand, skin tone is the undertone that never changes. This is part of your biological or ethnic makeup, which is influenced by genetics.

How To Determine Your Skin Tone

Determining your skin tone is the first step in finding the right engagement ring. Most people fall into one of two undertone categories – warm or cool. A few of you may even be part of the neutral skin tone group. Here’s a simple test to help you see which type of skin tone you have:

Take a look at the veins on your wrist under natural light.

  • If your veins appear green, you likely have a warm undertone.
  • If your veins appear blue, you likely have a cool undertone.
  • You may have a neutral undertone if you have difficulty determining the color or your veins appear blue-green.

Now that you better understand your skin tone, let’s dive into the best engagement ring options for each category.

Warm Skin Tones

If you have a warm skin tone, you’re in luck! Warm skin tones are defined by red or pink undertones that look stunning with yellow gold and rose gold engagement rings. These metals enhance the warmth of your skin, creating a radiant and flattering effect.

Choosing the Right Metal

When selecting a metal for your engagement ring, consider the following options:

Yellow Gold: The warm tones of yellow gold beautifully complement warm skin tones. Its rich color adds a touch of luxury and elegance to your ring.

Rose Gold: Rose gold has a romantic and feminine appeal. Its subtle pink hue enhances the warm undertones of your skin, creating a beautiful contrast.

Mixed Metals: Combining different metals, such as yellow gold and white gold, can add depth and visual interest to your engagement ring.

Choosing the Right Metal

Consider the following metal options for your engagement ring:

White Gold: White gold is a popular choice for cool skin tones as it complements the cool undertones of your skin. Its sleek and modern appearance adds a touch of sophistication.

Platinum: Known for its durability and rarity, platinum is a luxurious metal that beautifully enhances the coolness of your skin tone. It also pairs well with various gemstone colors.

Silver: Silver is a versatile, affordable option that complements cool skin tones. Its bright and reflective nature adds a subtle sparkle to your engagement ring.

Neutral Skin Tones

If you have a neutral skin tone, you have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of metal and gemstone options, as your skin tone is easy to match. Both warm and cool tones can complement your skin, allowing you to experiment with different jewelry styles and colors.

Depending on your preference, you can opt for yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, platinum, or silver metals. Similarly, a variety of gemstone colors can beautifully accentuate your neutral skin tone.

Choosing the Right Metal

With a neutral skin tone, you have the freedom to explore various metal options. Consider the following:

Yellow Gold: Yellow gold adds warmth and radiance to your engagement ring. It creates a classic and timeless look that complements the neutral undertones of your skin.

Rose Gold: Rose gold has a romantic and soft appearance. It complements the balanced undertones of neutral skin tones, creating a harmonious and elegant look.

White Gold: White gold offers a modern and sophisticated look that works well with any skin tone. Its versatility allows you to experiment with different styles and gemstone colors.

Choosing the Right Gemstone

Thinking of adding a gorgeous gemstone to your dream engagement ring? Did you know that in the world today, there are roughly varieties of gemstones? So, having some knowledge about them before embarking on the shopping trip will most definitely help.

Now comes the part of matching your skin tone to the gemstone.

  • Diamonds look great on any skin tone. The same is true for black diamonds, white topaz, and moissanite.
  • Warm skin tones complement earthy or bright colors like green, orange, and yellow. Topaz, yellow diamonds, or emeralds should be your go-to choice. Consider other options like brown diamonds, morganite, and citrine to complement your skin tone.
  • Cool skin tone looks great with blue, red, or purple. You should choose gemstones like amethysts, opal, tanzanite, pearls, garnets, or blue sapphires.

FAQs

Can I wear any metal with my skin tone?

Absolutely! While certain metals may be more complementary to specific skin tones, there are no hard and fast rules. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and what makes you feel beautiful and confident. Remember, the most important factor in selecting an engagement ring is that it reflects your personal style and makes you happy.

How does skin tone affect the choice of metal for an engagement ring?

Different metals complement different skin tones. For instance, yellow gold tends to look best on warm skin tones, while white gold or platinum often suits cool skin tones. Rose gold can work well with both warm and cool skin tones.

Can I mix metals in my engagement ring?

Certainly! Mixing metals can add visual interest and create a unique and personalized look. Many engagement rings feature a combination of metals, such as a two-tone band or a white gold setting with rose gold accents. Mixing metals allows you to incorporate different colors and textures into your ring, making it truly one-of-a-kind.

Which engagement ring metal colors are recommended for dark or deep skin tones?

Dark or deep skin tones pair beautifully with bold and contrasting metal colors. Platinum and white gold create a striking contrast against the skin, while yellow gold adds warmth and richness. Experimenting with colored gemstones can also be an excellent choice to enhance the ring’s appearance on darker skin tones.

What diamond color should I consider for my skin tone?

Consider the following when choosing a diamond color for your engagement ring based on your skin tone. However, keep in mind that your individual taste and the overall aesthetic of the engagement ring should also play a significant role in your decision-making process.

  • For cool skin tones, diamonds in the near-colorless range (G, H, I) or a slight hint of blue (Fancy Blue) can complement your skin tone.
  • For warm skin tones, diamonds in the near-colorless to slightly yellow range (G to M) or with a slight hint of yellow (Fancy Yellow) can create a beautiful contrast.

Men's Wedding Rings

Finding the right ring size is crucial when shopping for a men’s wedding band. A well-fitting ring not only ensures comfort but also adds to the overall appeal of the ring. This men’s wedding ring size guide will provide simple and effective methods to measure men’s ring sizes at home.

To ensure a perfect fit, follow the steps provided by our experts whether you are planning to surprise your partner or buy the ring for yourself.

Why is Ring Size Important?

Before we delve into how you can measure your ring size at home, let’s understand why having an accurately sized ring is so important.

Wearing a wedding ring that fits perfectly not only enhances. In addition to comfort, it also ensures the ring won’t slip off or become too tight. It’s essential to strike a balance between snugness and ease of movement.

Step-by-Step Guide to Measuring Your Ring Size

Follow these easy steps to get the most accurate men’s ring size:

How To Measure Ring Size With A Tape Measure

A measuring tape is the best and most accurate method to determine your ring size. Give yourself enough space to accommodate your knuckles for the best results. In addition, you should measure the finger on which you plan to wear the ring, as your left and right hands may have different finger sizes.

STEP 1:

Place the measuring tape over your finger and pull it around into a circle.

STEP 2:

Ensure that the circle fits comfortably over your knuckles by adjusting its size.

STEP 3:

Take note of the measurements in millimeters or inches and use the comparison chart if needed.

How To Measure Ring Size With A String

This next may be a little tricky, especially if you’re shopping for someone else. If you’re measuring your own size – great! This will be easier than you think. All you need to do is take some string or a piece of ribbon and wrap it comfortably around your ring finger.

Make a mark at the point where the string overlaps your finger once it has been wrapped around it. For an accurate result, try to make the smallest mark possible. Then, measure the string against a ruler or measuring tape. Enter your measurements here in either millimeters or inches. We’ll do the math for you; voila, you now have your ring size.

Still unsure? Check out this video for more information.

Tips for Accurate Measurements

To ensure the most accurate men’s ring size measurement, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Measure your ring size at different times of the day, as fingers can fluctuate in size due to temperature changes or swelling.
  • Avoid measuring your ring size when your fingers are cold, as they tend to be smaller. So measure when your hands are at a normal, comfortable temperature.
  • Measure the finger on which you plan to wear the ring, as each finger may have a slightly different size. Some experts recommend measuring the ring on your dominant hand.
  • Take multiple measurements to verify consistency and accuracy.

FAQs

How Do I know If I’m Measuring My Ring Size Correctly?

To ensure accurate measurements, follow the instructions provided in our men’s wedding ring size guide. Double-check your chosen sizing method and use a reliable ruler or ring size chart for reference. Measuring your ring size at different times of the day is always a good idea to account for any swelling or temperature changes that may affect finger size.

Are There Any Tips For Getting An Accurate Ring Size At Home?

Yes! Here are a few tips to help you get the most accurate ring size measurement at home:

  1. Measure your ring size when your fingers are at their average temperature.
  2. Avoid measuring your ring size when your fingers are cold, as this can result in smaller measurements.
  3. Consider measuring your finger size at the end of the day when your fingers are slightly larger due to natural swelling.

What If My Ring Size Falls Between Two Sizes On the Chart?

If your measurement falls between two sizes on the ring size chart, choosing the larger size is generally recommended. This ensures a more comfortable fit, especially if your finger size fluctuates due to temperature or weight changes.

Can I Use Online Ring Size Charts To Measure My Ring Size At Home?

While online ring size charts can be a helpful reference, it’s important to remember that different charts may vary slightly. It’s always best to use a specific chart provided by the jeweler or manufacturer you intend to purchase the ring from. If in doubt, consult the jeweler or consider ordering a ring sizer tool for precise measurements.

What Is The Average Ring Size For Men?

The average men’s ring size is 9. A wider ring band is recommended for men with bigger hands and long fingers. While men with smaller hands or shorter fingers, a wider band may not be the best choice. Then again, this also depends on your personal style and how much of a statement you want to make.

We’re Here To Help

James Allen offers a simple and practical guide to measuring your ring size at home so you can shop for the ideal men’s wedding ring. If you or your significant other are like most traditional men who have never worn a piece of jewelry except for maybe a watch, then a wedding ring might be the first meaningful piece of jewelry they own. A Brief History

While wedding rings, in general, have been around for many decades, it is believed that the earliest men’s wedding ring was called “Gimmel Rings.” Engagement and wedding rings also symbolized everlasting love and devotion during Ancient Egyptian times.

During World War II, many men who fought on the front line began wearing wedding rings as a keepsake or memory of their wives and families back home.

The same custom was carried through WWII, so it is presumed that during the 20th century, men started wearing wedding rings to symbolize their marital status. In recent years, we have seen a spike in popularity and focus on the groom. And today, we could not imagine a wedding ceremony without the classic ring exchange, right?

Men’s wedding rings are a tradition that is here to stay and a beautiful token of the love and commitment two people share.

Select A Metal Type

When deciding on a metal for your wedding ring, there is indeed a range of options. You may also want to ask yourself a few questions before the big purchase.

  • Are you allergic to any materials?
  • Do you and your partner want matching rings?
  • What kind of lifestyle do you lead?
  • What best suits your complexion?

You don’t want to make a hasty decision when making such an important purchase.

Yellow Gold Wedding Rings

Although yellow gold wedding rings are the most popular choice for men, there are other gold hues that are available too. Generally, men who are the conventional type tend to opt for the traditional gold ring.

This classic metal gives off a warm, subtle glow and is best suited for people with warm skin tones. Another great advantage of opting for yellow gold is that it does not tarnish easily. We stock both 14K and 18K yellow gold rings.

White Gold Wedding Rings

Another very popular metal is white gold. Rings made of white gold have a silvery radiance that makes their appearance classic and contemporary. This option is not only an affordable one but is lightweight and is also an easy-to-wear metal. These rings are also ideal for those who want to add delicate detailing or engraving to create the perfect unique men’s wedding band.

Rose Gold Wedding Rings

One of the less common choices among the metals is rose gold. However, this beautiful hue is rising in popularity and becoming very trendy for both men and women. Rose gold wedding rings are perfect for grooms wanting a more daring and distinctive look.

Platinum Wedding Rings

If these metals have not yet grabbed your attention and you much prefer a completely conventional ring. Then perhaps a platinum wedding ring is what you need. Now, you may think that platinum is the same as white gold, but actually, this is incorrect!

Although the two are very similar, they have some differences too, including the cost, appearance, and structure. Platinum is ideal for those who frequently work with their hands or are exposed to activities that result in friction against the ring surface. Considered to be the most durable metal, platinum is also one of the many hypoallergenic metals.

We understand that with all the choices available, the overall process of searching for the perfect “one” can become overwhelming. Here is a list of some of our most popular styles along with some details to make things a little simpler.

Classic wedding rings commonly feature an all-metal band that is either smooth or has a slight texture. Timeless and traditional rings are one of the most popular choices amongst customers. Our classic wedding rings are available in platinum, yellow, white, and rose gold.

Thankfully JamesAllen.com stocks a wide selection of male wedding bands featuring diamond accents that are a great way to add that extra bit of personality to your ring.

Ring Finishes

A ring’s finish describes the surface texture of the metal. A large part of the appeal of wedding rings for men lies with the texture, or finish, of the metal. We believe that most wedding rings owe their handsome appearance in large part to the texture, or finish, of the metal. This is why our wedding rings are available in a variety of different finishes, including polished, satin, brushed, matte, and hammered. Take a look at the different finishes to see what you prefer.

Polished – this classic finish is considered a traditional choice and the most common, specifically for wedding rings. This describes a band that features a smooth, reflective finish.

Satin –  although a satin finish is also known to have a smooth surface, it is not reflective like a polished finish. A satin finish is generally more appealing to men who prefer a contemporary design.

Hammered – this style gets its name from the tiny “dents” featured around the band created using a specialized jewelry hammer.

Brushed – similar to a satin finish, a brushed texture on a band resembles slight brush strokes. It has a similar soft shine to a matte finish. For men who lead active lifestyles,  a brushed finish is the best choice as it can hide scratches better than other finishes.

Keep Your Lifestyle In Mind

Once you’ve gone through all the details you need to look at before purchasing a wedding ring, it’s also important to consider your lifestyle.

As you or your partner will be wearing the ring every day, or at least we hope so, the ring you choose needs to perfectly match your Keep in mind how much time you spend with your hands throughout the day. You don’t need to be hesitant about wearing a wedding ring while working but. If for example, you are a construction worker, athlete, or even a nurse,

One of the biggest things to consider is how much you work with your hands during the day. For example, if you play sports or have a career as a mechanic or chef, a ring that is durable, scratch resistant, and has maximum comfort is crucial.

On the other hand, if his (or your) day-to-day life is less demanding on his hands, something more detailed and stylish is a perfect choice. But, always remember to also keep his personal style in mind.

When it comes to wedding rings, there are no hard and fast rules. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to help you create a unified look.

  1. Consider the shape of your engagement ring: If your engagement ring has a unique shape or design, it’s important to choose a curved wedding band that complements it.
  1. Choose the same metal: To create a cohesive look, opt for a curved wedding band made from the same metal as your engagement ring. However, there are no rules. You can, of course, choose what you love best!
  1. Think about the size of the stones: If your engagement ring has large diamonds or even a halo design, a curved wedding band with smaller diamonds or a more subtle curve can balance the look. On the other hand, if your engagement ring has a simpler design, a curved band with larger stones or a more dramatic curve can add some extra sparkle.
  1. Try them on together: The truth is that the best way to see if a curved wedding ring is right for you and if it perfectly complements your engagement ring is to try them on together. This will give you a better picture of how they look and feel on your finger and if they create the cohesive look you are looking for.

White-Gold-vs-Silver-What-You-Need-To-Know

White Gold vs Silver What You Need To Know

In the world of precious metals, white gold and silver are two of the most popular choices. For people who love the look of pure silver or white gold, both these metals add a certain zest to many types of jewelry. Something that is very different from other metal hues such as rose or yellow gold.

White Gold vs Silver What You Need To Know

While both white gold and silver are beautiful and versatile metals, they do have some advantages and drawbacks that are worth considering before deciding on your next piece of fine jewelry. We have put together a detailed comparison of silver and white gold to help you decide which metal is best for you. Here is everything you need to know.

What is White Gold?

White gold is a type of gold that is mixed with other metals, such as nickel, palladium, or silver, to create a white-colored alloy. As a final step, rhodium is plated over the resulting metal to enhance its luster and durability. The purity of white gold is measured in karats, with 14K and 18K being the most common options for jewelry. A classic, timeless look makes white gold a popular choice for engagement rings, wedding bands, and other fine jewelry pieces.

Pros and Cons Of White Gold

There is no universal rule that white gold is better than silver or vice versa. Depending on your needs, each metal has its advantages. While some people prefer white gold for certain pieces, others may opt for silver. Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of white gold.

PROS CONS
VersatileMay tarnish over time
Durable, strong, and perfect for everyday wearScratches easily
Good investment & maintains its value for a long timeMay contain nickel, which can cause allergic reactions in some people.

What is Silver?

Silver is a naturally occurring precious metal that has been used in jewelry for centuries. It has a soft, lustrous appearance and is loved for its affordability. While silver is beautiful on its own, it is often alloyed with other metals, such as copper, nickel or zinc, to increase its durability and strength The most common type of silver used in jewelry is sterling silver, which has a purity of 92.5%, with 7.5% made up of other metals.

Pros and Cons Of Silver

Just like with white gold, silver has both advantages and disadvantages. So what are they? Let’s find out.

PROSCONS
HypoallergenicTarnishes quicker
More affordable and budget friendlyRequires frequent cleaning and polishing
It can also be polished to maintain its shineSome think it has an “cheaper” look
Softer than white gold

How To Tell The Difference Between Silver And White Gold

Because of their similar appearances, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish white gold from silver. However, there are a few key differences that can help you tell them apart.  While at first glance silver and white gold may appear to have a similar hue, silver has a grayish-white hue, whereas white gold has a distinctly white shade.

Color:

Remember that the composition of white gold includes yellow gold and an alloy metal like nickel that gives gold its white hue. It is then plated with rhodium, which provides it with an elegant, mirrored finish.

On the contrary, silver carries a grayish-white hue with a brighter, more reflective color than white gold. Even though the difference may be subtle, it is often noticeable when the two metals are compared side by side.

Markings:

Both silver and white gold are typically stamped with tiny markings that indicate their purity, but it’s important to know that the markings will be different on each metal. Silver is usually stamped with a hallmark that indicates its percentage of purity (e.g. “925” for sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver), whereas white gold is usually stamped with its karat (e.g. “14K” for 14 karat white gold, which is 58.5% gold).

Tarnish:

Silver tarnishes over time, developing a dark patina. However, it can be polished off with a silver polish or a home remedy that will quickly restore your jewelry. White gold, on the other hand, does not tarnish, but it can become dull over time and may need to be polished by a trusted jeweler to restore its shine.

Price:

White gold is usually more expensive than silver because it contains gold and has a higher density. On the other hand, silver is among the most affordable types of metal for fine jewelry, especially for earrings and bracelets. But it’s important to note that the extra durability of white gold does increase the price tag of the metal.

White Gold vs Silver - The differences

FAQs

Is white gold or silver better for engagement rings?

Both white gold and silver can make beautiful engagement rings, but white gold is generally considered to be a more durable option. However, if you are looking for a more affordable option, silver can be a great choice.

Which metal is more expensive, white gold or silver?

White gold is typically more expensive than silver because of its composition. Pure gold is a precious metal and is more expensive than silver, and the additional metals mixed with the gold in white gold also contribute to its higher cost.

Are you able to distinguish white gold from silver just by looking at them?

White gold and silver can look similar at first glance, but there are some differences that can help you distinguish between them. White gold has a brighter, shinier appearance than silver, which has a softer, more matte finish. Additionally, white gold may have a slightly yellowish or grayish tint due to the gold content, while silver is pure white.

Can I wear white gold and silver jewelry together?

Yes, of course! You can mix and match white gold and silver jewelry to create a unique, layered look. However, it’s important to be aware that sterling silver and white gold don’t necessarily look exactly the same, so you can’t always style to match perfectly. But combining the metals creates a beautiful and harmonious mix of modern jewelry styles

Final Thoughts

Picking out a metal is a very important element in any jewelry purchase. With so many different types of metals it can be challenging to find the perfect metal type for your next piece of gorgeous jewelry. Ultimately, choosing between silver and white gold comes down to a few factors: preference, budget, and of course the jewelry type you want to wear. Both metals are beautiful and popular choices, but which one is right for you?

A Beginner’s Guide to Art Deco Engagement Rings

Are you searching for an engagement ring that combines vintage charm with contemporary flair? A statement-making Art Deco engagement ring is sure to impress. This style is becoming increasingly popular as modern brides choose it for its unique flair and well-crafted design.

A Beginner's Guide to Art Deco Engagement Rings

Perhaps you’ve heard the term “Art Deco” but are unsure what it means? Today on the blog, we’re discussing the Art Deco engagement ring that combines elegance and sophistication in the most gorgeous vintage manner. Keep reading to get all the details and get ready to say “yes” to a vintage-inspired engagement ring.

Art Deco Engagement Rings: A Brief History

The Art Deco era was a prominent jewelry style during the 1920s and continued into the 1930s. This was a great time of change and people were eager to embrace “the new”. The rapid changes and transformations influenced this style in culture, fashion, and social conditions.

Inspired by ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome, Art Deco was characterized by bold geometric shapes, intricate details, and rich, bold colors. Art Deco jewelry became popular among the wealthy elite, who prized its sophistication and glamour.

Vintage Art Deco engagement rings are a reflection of this era’s design aesthetic, with their unique features and timeless beauty. It is also believed that this style reflected this desire for progress, with its bold, streamlined designs that celebrated the machine age.

Characteristics of Art Deco Engagement Rings

There are a number of design elements that set Art Deco rings apart from other styles. As we mentioned, the Art Deco style is characterized by bold geometry and abstract designs that paid homage to advancement, including sharp angles, straight lines, and symmetry. Chevrons, triangles, rectangles, squares, baguettes, and other sharp shapes are all showcased in Art Deco jewelry, giving Art Deco pieces distinctive flair and instantly recognizable features.

Colorful gemstones are another beautiful feature of Art Deco engagement rings from this era, often highlighting sapphires, rubies, emeralds, amethysts, and other stunning gemstones, in addition to diamonds.

Antique Cut Diamonds

Diamonds were the gemstone of choice during the Art Deco era, however, unique cut diamonds have always been majorly popular in Art Deco jewelry. The most prominent included, baguettes, trapezoids, emerald cut, kite, and Asscher cut diamonds. Although these stones often have larger faceting with a softer look, they tend to be less sparkly. It’s said that these diamonds were meant to be viewed in candlelight for romantic tones and optimal glow.

Modern takes on Art Deco also include oval and round cut diamonds set in milgrain-style bezels alongside geometric elements.

Vibrant, Colorful, Geometric Design

Art Deco-inspired styles are characterized by bright, crisp lines and geometric shapes. Additionally, vibrant color gems were a signature style. Most Art Deco rings featured color diamonds or gemstones such as sapphires, emeralds, amethysts, and rubies.

Platinum & White Gold

From the start, vintage Art Deco engagement rings were created in platinum rather than yellow gold, due to their strength and resistance to tarnishing. White gold was born to battle the rising expenses of platinum is seen as a more accessible and affordable choice for many who were after a vintage-style engagement ring.

Milgrain Detail

Another beautiful style that characterizes Art Deco rings is milgrain detailing. Milgrain is a decorative technique used in the setting process where small beads of metal are used to create borders. It usually creates an ornate border that adds an antique touch to the design.

Bezel Setting

The Art Deco innovation led to new engagement ring settings that arranged stones close together to create eye-catching gem mosaics. The bezel is characterized by a ring of metal that holds the stone in place. This setting has remained very popular for years and is also known as the oldest setting of the Art Deco era. One of the advantages of a bezel setting is that it securely keeps fragile diamonds and precious stones in place.

Tips On Shopping For An Art Deco Engagement Ring

Nowadays, modern brides-to-be are shopping for timeless engagement rings. And nothing says that better than vintage, right? There is something so exquisite about Art Deco engagement rings which shows why the demand for vintage designs has taken off these past few years. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect Art Deco ring:

  • Do your research: Before you start shopping for an Art Deco engagement ring, it’s important to educate yourself on the style. Look at examples of Art Deco jewelry and familiarize yourself with the different design elements, such as filigree work, geometric patterns, and the use of color. This will help you to recognize an authentic Art Deco ring and make an informed decision.
  • Choose a reputable jeweler: It’s important to choose a jeweler specializing in antique and vintage jewelry, particularly Art Deco rings. Look for a jeweler with a good reputation and extensive experience in this area. They should be able to provide you with a certificate of authenticity for the ring and answer any questions you may have about the piece.
  • Only buy a certified diamond or gemstone: At JamesAllen, we offer both earth and lab created diamonds. A lab created diamond is definitely worth considering if you’re looking for more value for your money.
  • Be mindful of style: Although Art Deco rings are known for their timeless elegance, they may not suit everyone. Always consider personal style and taste before making a purchase. An Art Deco engagement ring may not be the best choice if you or your partner prefer modern, minimalist designs.

How To Wear A Wedding Ring Set

There are no hard-and-fast rules in the world of how to wear wedding and engagement rings. As you’ll soon see, even the most “universal” traditions are subject to variations. It all depends on the ring wearer’s particular culture and style.

So what should YOU do? Read on to find out.

Pear shaped engagement ring

Now that you’ve started thinking about the perfect way to stack on your bands, you might be wondering how exactly to wear engagement and wedding rings together. It’s easy to feel confused about wedding rings or bridal sets. There is no right or wrong way. It’s all completely up to you!

It is impossible to define a ‘traditional’ manner of wearing a wedding ring set, but there are a variety of popular ways of wearing them. And yes, some do follow various traditions. Still unsure? We’re here to help. Keep scrolling to learn everything you need to know about how to wear a wedding ring set.

What’s The Right Way To Wear A Wedding Ring?

When it comes to the “right way” to wear a wedding ring, there are a few options. However, it’s important to keep in mind that it generally comes down to comfort and your personal style.

However, in many Western cultures, the wedding ring finger is traditionally said to be the fourth finger on the left hand. But, the “ring finger” is not the same in all cultures and countries. It also may depend on local tradition, religion, and personal preference.

What’s The Difference Between A Wedding Ring And An Engagement Ring?

First, let’s talk about the rings. Though there are a few key differences between a wedding ring and an engagement ring, one of the main features that sets these two rings apart is when they’re given. An engagement ring is typically given during the proposal, while wedding rings are exchanged during the marriage ceremony between both partners.

And while an engagement ring typically features a prominent center stone, a wedding ring does not have a particular focal point. They sometimes feature rows of smaller stones or a clean solitaire band.

The Best Wedding Ring Styles

Experts recommend that you don’t just buy a wedding ring simply because it’s currently trendy. These are rings you’ll be wearing every day for the rest of your life, so it’s important that the design and style reflect your personality.
Say ‘I do’ and begin yours forever with a distinctively beautiful James Allen wedding ring. Choose from our large selection of gorgeous ring styles, including classic wedding rings, diamond wedding rings, and eternity rings.

Classic Wedding Rings

Classic wedding rings complement any engagement ring. The simplicity of a classic metal band directs all the attention to your engagement ring. So if you’re struggling to find a matching wedding ring or simply want to highlight your engagement ring, a classic wedding ring could be the perfect style.

Curved Wedding Rings

If your engagement ring has a distinct shape, your wedding ring can curve to accommodate your center stone. This gives your wedding set a unique interlocking quality. As an added bonus, a curved wedding ring’s complimentary shape reduces friction on your skin by preventing unnecessary slippage.

Eternity Rings

In some cultures, it’s a custom to wear circular eternity rings. In this case, eternity rings are considered to symbolize eternal love. A meaningful expression between a couple on their journey of everlasting love – a promise of lifelong commitment. Even though traditionally, eternity rings are gifted to mark a special milestone within a relationship, nowadays, they are often worn as wedding rings as they pair so beautifully with many different engagement ring designs.

Which Hand Should You Wear Your Engagement & Wedding Ring On?

Your wedding ring set can be worn on either hand, and there is no right or wrong way to do it. It differs worldwide and is often not the same in all countries and cultures. But there are at least 3 common ways to wear a wedding set.

On The Right Hand

How a person wears their engagement and wedding band may determine the area they are living in or the cultural traditions they are accustomed to.

In certain Northern and Eastern European countries, wearing these rings on the right hand is customary. This tradition actually comes from an ancient Roman belief that the left hand was untrustworthy. As a matter of fact, the Latin word for “left hand” shares the same root as the modern-day word “sinister.”

On The Left Hand

The most common choice for most people is to wear their engagement and wedding rings on their left hand. The tradition of wearing a wedding ring, specifically on the fourth finger, originated from the belief that this finger has a vein running directly to the heart. As this idea has been passed down for many generations, people still enjoy the symbolism of wearing their wedding rings closest to their hearts, showing how important marriage is.

In addition, many people prefer to wear the engagement and wedding rings together on the same finger (on the left hand). Generally, the wedding ring is placed on the finger first so that it is positioned with the engagement ring following on the outside. For this reason, numerous gorgeous wedding rings and bridal sets are specifically designed to match each other. And many couples choose this option when they plan their engagement and wedding rings.

However, another option that some people choose is to wear their wedding ring on top of their engagement ring to keep it secure on the finger.

On Different Hands

The engagement ring and wedding ring don’t necessarily have to be worn on the same hand. Some women wear their wedding ring on the left ring finger and their engagement ring on the right ring finger. Whether you uphold a time-old tradition or create your own is entirely up to you.

How Do I Match A Wedding Ring To An Engagement Ring?

The answer: however you’d like. As the bride-to-be, you can choose to express yourself in whatever way you wish. There are few, if any, customs regarding how you pair your wedding ring with your engagement ring. So what does this mean for you? You have three main elements to mix and match: metal, stones, and style.

Match By Metals

As we’ve mentioned before, there are truly no wrong answers when it comes to engagement rings and wedding bands. While you may prefer to have a perfectly matching set of rings, others might prefer a mix of metals. All ring metals look great together as long you love what you’re wearing! At JamesAllen.com, we provide you with four beautiful metal options: yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, and platinum.

Match By Stones

Diamonds are definitely marriage material, but so are gemstones. Gemstones are a gorgeous alternative for those who prefer a twist on the classic wedding ring. Don’t be shy to choose a wedding ring with the right stones to make you smile.
The beauty of gemstone wedding rings is that there is a huge selection!

From sapphires and rubies to opals and emeralds…these can make the most perfect, personalized piece. Whether you choose a particular stone for its beauty or you want to embrace a certain stone’s meaning, the options are endless! For instance, you may wish to have a unique wedding ring set that features a respective birthstone.

Match By Ring Setting Style

Finding the perfect wedding ring set can be tricky as there is a diverse range of styles to choose from.

Of course, style often comes down to personal taste and preference. But luckily, at James Allen, you can perfectly match your wedding ring to your engagement ring or go with something completely unique. The beautiful settings options are plentiful, and range in style and design, from stunning pavé wedding rings to rose gold stackable rings – you’re guaranteed to find the one.

Platinum Round Split Band Diamond Halo Engagement Ring

What Should You Do If You Can’t Wear Your Wedding Ring The Traditional Way?

Remember that tradition is purely just a suggestion.

  • If you can’t wear your wedding ring on the “right” finger, wear it on another one!
  • If you are unable to wear it on your hand, slip it onto a chain and wear it as a pendant necklace.
  • If your wedding ring doesn’t fit with your engagement ring, wear them on separate fingers.
  • If you don’t like rings, bracelets can be excellent substitutes.

What matters most is that it’s your wedding, your marriage, and your ring. Regardless of how you choose to wear it, it’s completely up to you!

Final Thoughts

Your wedding ring set is more than a beautiful set of jewelry. It’s also a symbol of your love, devotion, and bond as a couple. And just as your love is unique, how you want to wear your wedding ring set is just as special.

How To Shop For The Perfect Oval Diamond Engagement Ring

How To Shop For The Perfect Oval Diamond Engagement Ring

Shopping for an engagement ring is exciting but can be a daunting task, especially when you’re looking for something that is unique and special.

How To Shop For The Perfect Oval Diamond Engagement Ring

One of the most popular choices right now is an oval diamond engagement ring as it is both classic and modern. It also features the perfect blend of sparkle and sophistication. Still not sure how to find the perfect oval diamond engagement ring? Keep scrolling.

What Are Oval Cut Diamonds?

An oval cut diamond is a popular choice when it comes to engagement rings. It is similar to the round brilliant cut diamond, but it has a more elongated shape that makes the stone appear larger. Diamonds with an oval cut are typically cut to maximize their carat weight and brilliance, and they have a unique sparkle that is very striking.

The oval cut diamond is also a versatile option, as it can be used in both classic and modern designs. Whether it’s an engagement ring or a piece of jewelry, oval cut diamonds can make the perfect statement.

What Does An Oval Engagement Ring Symbolize?

An oval engagement ring is a beautiful and timeless symbol of love and commitment. But did you know that the shape has a special meaning? The term oval is derived from the Latin words ov or ovum, which means egg.

Traditionally, the shape has been associated with rebirth, fertility, and immortality since ancient times. Additionally, the oval is said to represent the never-ending cycle of life, love and eternity. An oval engagement ring is a beautiful way to begin a new life together.

Pros & Cons Of Buying An Oval Engagement Ring

The oval cut engagement ring is definitely a stunning option, but, as with all settings, there are advantages and disadvantages. So what are the pros and cons of buying an oval engagement ring? Let’s find out.

Pros & Cons Of Buying An Oval Engagement Ring

Ultimately, choosing an oval engagement ring will depend on your preferences. But, it’s also a good idea to weigh up the pros and cons before making a final decision, to see if it’s the right diamond ring for you.

What Does An Oval Engagement Ring Cost

If one of your goals is to shop for an affordable engagement ring, then an oval engagement ring is a great choice, as many options fit various budgets.

It’s important to understand that several factors affect the cost of an oval engagement ring, such as the type of metal used, the complexity of the setting, and of course, the color, carat, and clarity of the diamond or gemstone.

For example, a simple oval engagement ring with a smaller size diamond and a plain metal band could cost anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000. On the other hand, a more detailed oval engagement ring with a large diamond and intricate setting design could cost approximately $10,000 or more.

Oval Diamonds Compared To Round Diamonds

Both oval and round diamonds are popular engagement ring choices, but they differ in several ways.
Shape
The most obvious difference between oval diamonds and round diamonds is their shape. Oval diamonds are elongated and have an oval shape, while round diamonds are perfectly round. If you love both diamond shapes but can’t decide, an oval cut is the perfect twist on a round cut diamond.
Appearance
Oval diamonds can create the illusion of longer, more slender fingers, while round diamonds tend to have a more classic and traditional appearance. Diamonds with oval shapes have a larger surface area than round diamonds of the same weight, which makes them look bigger as well as more sparkling.
Brilliance
As a result of their symmetrical shape and the way they reflect light, round cut diamonds are known for their exceptional brilliance. Diamonds with an oval cut are also quite brilliant, but their elongated shape sometimes produces a bowtie effect – a dark area at the center.
Price
Generally, oval diamonds are less expensive than round diamonds of the same carat weight and quality. This is mainly because round diamonds are more sought after, they require more cutting and polishing to achieve their symmetrical form.

FAQs

What jewelry do men wear most?

It’s safe to say that the most common piece of jewelry that men wear is a watch. However, rings generally come in second place.

What kinds of necklaces should guys wear?

As most guys have thicker hair (and they shave) on their necks, finding a chain that won’t pinch and pull hair isn’t a big deal. But if this is something you’re worried about it, opt for ball chains, box chains, curb chains, or a Figaro chains just to be extra safe. Additionally, the thickness of a chain truly depends on its purpose, but the most practical and versatile necklaces for men are those that are 4–5 mm thick.

Which ring should guys wear?

Although there are no set rules, when it comes to an engagement or wedding ring, nearly all men opt for a simple yellow or white gold band. In terms of metals for men, rose gold is one of the less popular choices. There are a number of different styles and designs of rings available for men nowadays. These include diamond rings, signet rings, alternative rings and black wedding bands for men.

Lab Grown diamond rings

Lab Grown Diamond Rings: Everything You Need To Know

When shopping for the perfect diamond engagement ring, you have most likely come across all types of diamonds. You may have also come across lab-grown diamonds and wondered what they were. Well, you’ve come to the right place. Here is everything you need to know about lab-grown diamonds to help you decide which sparkler puts that twinkle in your eye.

Lab Grown diamond rings

What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are optically and chemically identical to earth created diamonds. The only difference is their origin. A diamond seed is placed in conditions identical to those in underground mines. Then, a carbon coating is added to help the diamond crystallize as it grows.

The crystalline form of carbon we call “diamond” can be attained only through intense heat, constant pressure, and a good amount of time. Nowadays, lab grown diamonds can be fully formed in a few weeks rather than millions of years. The result is a lab grown diamond that differs from a mined diamond in name only.

If you were to look at both types of diamonds through a professional jeweler’s loupe, or if you were to inspect both diamonds on a molecular level, you would see no difference. The same result was achieved through very different processes.

How Is A Lab Grown Diamond Made?

A lab grown diamond is produced by replicating the natural process that diamonds are subjected to when their earth created counterparts are grown. Carbon is exposed to high temperatures and high pressure in a controlled environment (laboratory) thus creating a diamond.

Lab created diamonds can be made using two different methods. The first is known as the HPHT method, where a small diamond seed is placed into a piece of carbon. The carbon is pressurized and exposed to high temperatures. Finally, the pressure and heat then melt the carbon allowing a diamond to form around the initial seed.

The second is the CVD method, which also requires a diamond seed. The seed is placed into a sealed chamber that is heated and filled with carbon-rich gasses. These gasses are ionized into plasma using advanced technology that breaks down the gasses’ molecules and allows pure carbon to stick to the seed, forming a new diamond.

Fun fact: It typically takes a lab created diamond less than a month to grow. A 1-carat white diamond takes around two weeks to form, whereas fancy color diamonds like yellow and blue diamonds take between 5-10 days to form.

Pros and Cons of Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Rings

Lab created diamonds are graded and certified using the same process as mined diamonds. So what are their pros and cons when it comes to lab grown diamond engagement rings? Let’s find out.

What to Look for in a Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring

Price

Modern-day consumers will be happy to hear that lab grown diamonds are generally more affordable than earth created diamonds. Meaning,  lab grown diamonds often cost 40 to 65% less. Experts suggest that as new technologies develop, these prices will drop even further. Want to know why? Well, the diamond-growing process is less resource-intensive than the diamond-mining process. It simply costs less to grow a diamond in a lab than it does to mine a diamond from the earth, and those savings are passed along to diamond shoppers.

Color & Quality

The color of a lab grown diamond is everlasting. The lab created diamond you buy today will look exactly the same when your grandchildren inherit it from you. Additionally, lab grown diamonds are assessed and graded according to the 4Cs: color, cut, clarity, and carat (just like mined diamonds).

Did you know you can also shop lab grown diamonds by color? Choose your perfect diamond and view it in 40x superzoom & 360° HD to start designing your dream engagement ring today. Fancy color lab grown diamonds are available in yellow, blue, pink, purple, green, red and orange.

Sustainability

As lab grown diamonds are not mined, their popularity is growing. Not to mention this diamond choice is guaranteed to come conflict-free. It is also easy to track the origin of lab grown diamonds.

How to Care for Your Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring

Your lab grown diamond ring needs to be frequently cleaned, just like a traditional diamond ring. Depending on your ring style, definitely consider regular maintenance of your ring to check for loose stones and wear-and-tear of prongs. But on a regular basis, simply follow our step-by-step infographic to maintain your lab grown diamond engagement ring’s radiance.

How-To-Clean-Jewelry

Where Should You Buy A Lab Grown Diamond Ring?

Lab grown diamonds are not available at every jeweler. But fortunately, at JamesAllen.come, we stock a tremendous inventory of lab grown diamonds along with premier engagement and wedding rings. Explore your desired diamond in 360° HD views and up to 40x magnification so you can truly design your dream engagement ring.

FAQs

Are lab grown diamonds less expensive than natural diamonds?

Typically lab grown diamonds can cost roughly 40 to 65% less than a natural, mined diamond. This means customers can easily get a high-quality diamond or a larger stone with a significantly less expensive price tag. Want to know why? The difference is due to supply. Natural diamond supply is sparse, due to the hundreds of years it takes for nature to create a diamond. Yet with man-made diamonds, there is no cap on the supply, which drives the price lower and lower as supply goes up.

Are lab grown diamonds actual diamonds?

Yes, yes, and yes! Lab grown diamonds are just as real as diamonds mined from the earth. There are no optical or chemical differences between the two diamonds, plus they have the same shape, size, color and clarity grades. In fact, the only real difference is in their formation.

Are lab grown diamonds considered a good investment?

It is very common for people to mistakenly assume that lab grown diamonds are not worth anything or a good investment. However, they are diamonds and possess value, even though they are manufactured.

Can you insure lab created diamonds?

Yes! Just like mined diamonds, lab grown diamonds can be insured.

Do lab diamonds pass the diamond tester?

The answer is yes! Lab diamonds have the same carbon composition as natural diamonds. Therefore, they have the same thermal conductivity. The test results are positive when exposed to the diamond tester, since the diamonds have the same physical and chemical properties as natural mined diamonds.

Final Thoughts

So is a lab grown diamond for you? Ultimately, only you can decide the answer to this question. But if you’re looking to maximize your budget without compromising on quality, then a lab grown diamond engagement ring may be calling your name.

Pear Shaped Engagement Rings: How To Pick The Perfect Teardrop

Choosing who you want to spend the rest of your life with may be a no-brainer, but choosing the engagement ring that you or your future spouse will wear may not be an easy task.

Pear Shaped Engagement Ring

Today on the blog, we’re focusing on the pear shaped diamond. There’s no denying that pear shaped engagement rings are experiencing a major comeback, and it’s easy to see why.

These stunning teardrop-shaped pieces are not only timeless and eye-catching but they can also be easily customized because they have so many distinguishing characteristics.

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about this unique yet gorgeous diamond shape.

What Is a Pear Shaped Engagement Ring?

Pear shaped diamonds have graceful curves and a flattering, elongated teardrop shape. Essentially, this diamond shape is a combination of a marquise and a round diamond.  Also sometimes called “teardrop engagement rings,” pear engagement rings have one rounded end and one pointed.

The teardrop diamond first originated in Belgium during the early 1400s. Created by Lodewyk, van Berquem was also responsible for the placement of facets in modern diamond cuts and for the use of symmetry in diamond cutting. Unfortunately, at the time, the pear shaped diamond was not so popular.

However, today, there are pear shaped engagement rings for every aesthetic, from minimalistic solitaires to vintage-inspired styles with captivating colorful gemstones. Even famous celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Elizabeth Taylor, Emily Ratajkowski and Cardi B rock out-of-this-world pear-shaped engagement rings.

Pear shape diamonds: Pro and Cons infographic

What to Look for in a Pear Shaped Engagement Ring

When searching for your perfect pear shaped diamond, there are a few important characteristics to keep in mind! Remember to look for…

  • Even Shoulders & Perfect Symmetry

Diamonds with pear shapes should have even rounded edges when viewed from above. In an instance where one edge is slanted more than the other, the value of the diamond decreases. Additionally, the point of the teardrop should lie directly between the two rounded edges. In other words, if you fold the diamond in half lengthwise, the point of the diamond should be right on the folding line

  • Proper Sparkle

As these types of diamonds are modified round brilliants, they should retain all of the sparkle and magnificence of the round brilliant diamond. Diamonds occasionally display a dark “bow-tie” shape within the diamond’s facets (center) that can be seen at a certain angle. It’s important to make sure that your pear-shaped diamond does not have this imperfection!

  • Good Length To Width Ratio

The length-to-width ratio of your pear-cut diamond will impact how wide or narrow the diamond will look. This ration also refers to how long a diamond is in comparison to how wide it is. If the width of the pear shaped diamond is 1, it is generally agreed upon that the ideal length is about 1.5 to 1.7 times that. Using this ratio, you’ll be able to create the perfect ring shape for your engagement ring.

  • A Setting to Protect the Pear Shape

We have five different yet ideal types of settings that will perfectly protect your pear-shaped engagement ring from damage.

  1. Prong setting – this refers to the metal claws that hold a diamond in place. Not only does this allow for maximum light reflection and a beautiful display of the diamond, but a prong setting offers a large amount of protection for the diamond. This is ideal for smaller pear diamonds and offers excellent protection for the point.
  2. Halo setting – glamorous and stylish, the halo setting offers protection all around the diamond. Edges are kept secure while adding an extra sparkle to the stone.
  3. Bezel setting – offering the best possible protection for any diamond cut. The entire diamond is beautifully wrapped in metal and kept in place. Contemporary, trendy with a minimalistic look, are also perfect for fancy-color pear diamonds.

How To Wear A Teardrop Engagement Ring

There are no rules when it comes to the ‘right’ way to wear a pear shaped engagement ring. But the most common way to wear a pear shape is to have the tip pointing upwards to your fingertips, with the round bottom towards the hand. This gives it the upright figure of a falling teardrop or pear standing up.

What Wedding Rings Go With Pear Shaped Engagement Rings

Choosing a stand-out engagement ring style can make it a little trickier to pair it with a wedding band, so we’ve put together some of our favorite ideas to help you style your dream ring.

While the simplest way to pair your fancy-shaped engagement ring might be with a straight wedding band, you can also jazz it up with an unusual wedding ring style. For example, a curved or contoured wedding ring will beautifully follow the curve of your pear shaped ring and accentuate its size.
One of the most beautiful ways to ensure your engagement and wedding rings perfectly match is to opt for a bridal set. In a bridal set, both rings are designed to fit seamlessly together. As teardrop engagement rings are often a unique style, you’re guaranteed that your rings will complement one another perfectly.

FAQs

  1. What does a pear shaped ring symbolize? A pear-shaped ring often represents the strong will, empowerment, independence, and unique style of its wearer. It is believed that these stones also symbolize tears of joy or wedding tears, both appropriate choices for an engagement ring.
  2. Are pear shaped diamonds more expensive? Generally, pear-shaped diamonds are less expensive than round diamonds of the same carat and quality. Since pear-shaped diamonds produce less waste when cut from raw diamonds, they are usually less expensive to cut. Additionally, pear-shaped diamonds will look larger than round diamonds of the same carat weight.
  3. Are pear shaped rings pretty? If you’re looking for an elegant, unique shape that’s different from the rest, a pear-shaped engagement ring is perfect for you! Pears give great sparkle, look larger than rounds of the same size, and are rarer than many other shapes. They’re a beautiful engagement ring choice!
  4. Do pear shaped diamonds sparkle? Yes! Pear-shaped diamonds are “brilliant” cut diamonds which are faceted in triangular and kite shapes. In other words, they sparkle like crazy!

Top Engagement Ring Tips From the Experts

Is it time to start ring shopping? Congratulations! Buying an engagement ring and gearing up for the proposal is truly an exciting time. Don’t know where to start? Scroll down for expert advice!

Top Engagement Ring Tips

We sat down with Sarah, one of James Allen’s senior customer service reps, to talk about some common questions she encounters on a daily basis from customers. Whether it’s about buying an engagement ring or making proposal plans, read on for her top engagement ring tips and more!

1. Shape Your Thoughts

When you’re just getting started, we recommend thinking about shape preference. ‘A round center stone is never going to go out of style, and it is by far the most popular shape,’ explains Sarah. If you don’t know where to begin, play it safe and go for a round center stone. Oval cut and pear-shaped diamonds are a great choice if you prefer something a bit more trendy.

2. Timing Is Everything

When you’re thinking about the proposal, consider timelines and how long it takes to make your ring. ‘I always remind our customers to allow themselves enough time because all our rings are made to order,’ adds Sarah. So, remember, whatever you choose, give yourself a few weeks before getting your hands on these gorgeous pieces.

3. Let’s Talk Budget

You may have heard about the ‘three-month salary rule’, but we believe you should determine how much you can comfortably spend overall. There are no set rules when it comes to how much money you should spend on an engagement ring. Keep in mind that the price tags of an engagement ring can vary significantly, so it’s important to choose one that fits your budget.

‘Once we know what style the customer wants, the best-sellers are a good reference,’ adds Sarah. We have a wide selection of stunning options for every kind of budget and won’t break the bank.

Looking to sparkle and save? We teamed up with proposal expert Stacy Stahl to cover all your ring budget questions, including:

  1. How much should you spend on a ring?
  2. Does bigger mean better?
  3. How can you save money?
  4. What’s the average amount spent?

Listen to her tips in the video below to find the best bling for your buck:

4. A Two-Way Street

Engagement ring shopping is usually a two-way street. ‘You should always keep your partner in the loop and follow their lead’ advises Sarah. Your partner is going to be wearing the ring every day, so make sure they love it! If your significant other hints at something other than a classic solitaire, try something different like these vintage-inspired engagement rings.

FAQs

What is most important when picking an engagement ring?

The most important characteristics you should pay attention to when buying an engagement ring are the diamond’s cut, color, weight, and clarity. A diamond’s price and appearance depend on these characteristics.

How can I make my engagement ring special?

There are many different and beautiful ways to make an engagement ring special. At JamesAllen.com we offer you the opportunity to design your dream ring using our Ring Studio.  And for an extra personal touch, you can also engrave a meaningful message (for free) on the inside of your engagement ring.

How do you properly wear an engagement ring?

Despite there being no right or wrong way to wear an engagement ring, engagement rings are usually worn on the left ring finger. This is the most common choice, and in many western cultures, the wedding ring finger is traditionally said to be the fourth finger on the left hand. However, the “ring finger” is not the same in all cultures and countries.

What should you not do when buying an engagement ring?

When it comes to engagement ring shopping, many people often make the same mistakes. To make sure both the engagement ring and the proposal moment are close to being perfect, it’s so important to keep these in mind:

  • Set a budget
  • Do your homework and get all the information you can
  • Check your partner’s ring size partner
  • Consider your partner’s personal style.
  • Plan the proposal

How To Measure Your Ring Size

How To Measure Your Ring Size

Whether you’re searching for the perfect fit for your dream engagement ring or surprising your fiance’ to be, our ring size guide will point you in the right direction. Let’s see how you measure up.

How To Measure Your Ring Size

Wedding and engagement rings have long been a symbol of love and devotion. The circular ring has neither a start nor a finish, which is emblematic of an everlasting union. With such rich meaning and symbolism, designed to last a lifetime—so it makes sense that the ring size needs to be spot on.

If you’re not sure how to measure ring size, you’re in the right place.

How To Measure Ring Size At Home?

You may be asking yourself, how is this even possible? It’s true, James Allen can help you figure out your ring size all from the comfort of your own home. Take a look at our free online ring sizer

Alternatively, you can simply request a free ring sizer that will be delivered to your home.

Nervous that you’ve ordered the incorrect ring size? Don’t fret! We will resize your ring once, for free up to 1 year after the purchase.

Different Ring Size Conversions

While you may wear one size in the U.K., your sizing in the states may be completely different. Thankfully, though, conversion charts are available to ensure you order the right size regardless of which country the ring was sized in, which ensures complete accuracy.

Ring sizes in the United States and Canada range from 3 to 13, which includes half and quarter sizes. A ring’s size is determined by its diameter or circumference and is measured in inches or millimeters. The diameter measures the inside length of the ring, whereas the circumference measures the length of the entire band.

International ring sizing involves the same measurement process, but the numbered sizes run on different scales, which vary by country. Australia and the United Kingdom actually use an alphabetical letter sizing system.

How To Measure Ring Size With A Tape Measure

Using a measuring tape is considered to be the best and most accurate method to determine your ring size. Give yourself enough space to accommodate your knuckles for the best results. Also, you should measure the finger where you plan to wear the ring, since the finger size on your left and right hands may differ.

STEP 1:

Place the measuring tape over your finger and pull it around into a circle.

STEP 2:

You should adjust the size of the circle, move it over your knuckles, and make sure it fits comfortably.

STEP 3:

Take note of the measurements in millimeters and use the comparison chart if needed.

How To Measure Ring Size With A String

This next method is simple and works well for those who don’t have a ring nearby. All you need to do is take some string or ribbon and wrap it comfortably around your ring finger.

Once the piece of string is around your finger, carefully mark the spot where the string overlaps. For an accurate result, try to make the smallest mark possible. Then, take the string and measure it against a ruler or measuring tape. Enter your measurements here in either millimeters or inches. We’ll do the calculations for you and, voila, you now have your ring size.

Still unsure? Find out more by watching this video.

More Ring Sizing Tips

  1. Measure your finger in the evening – For best results, measure your finger at the end of the day. In the morning, your fingers are colder and therefore smaller than usual.
  2. Measure a few times – Be sure to measure your finger size a few times to make sure your calculations are accurate.
  3. Use non-stretchable material – If you’re measuring your finger on your own, you want an accurate measurement! Good materials: ribbon, twine, even paper.
  4. Measure your finger close to your knuckle – This is where the ring will usually sit, so you want it to be comfortable.
  5. Measure your finger in the middle of the day – Our fingers tend to swell overnight, so it is recommended not to take your measurement in the morning as you wake up.
  6. It’s also recommended to not measure your finger, When the weather is either too hot or cold, after an intense workout or if you are sick.

Tips for Buying a Ring as a Surprise:

  1. Ask people If you don’t know your partner’s ring size, ask their close friends or family members to assist. Tell them to keep it hush-hush so that they don’t accidentally ruin the surprise!
  2. Borrow a ring that fits Borrow their ring (from the correct finger!) and use James Allen’s virtual ring sizer to determine the ring’s size.
  3. Shop for the ring on a private device And log out of all your shared accounts! You don’t want your partner running across your cookie trail.

Other Ways To Find The Ring Size

Taking an existing ring to a jeweler

Even though you won’t be shopping for a ring in the store, this is still one of the most professional ways to find your ideal ring size. Head over to your local jewelry store and have the jeweler measure your ring size. In addition to their nifty gadget, consider trying on a few of their engagement or wedding rings to ensure comfort and a perfect fit.

Find your ring size

What Is The Average Ring Size For Men?

The average size of a men’s wedding band is 9. For men with bigger hands and long fingers, a wider ring band is recommended. While men with smaller hands or shorter fingers, a wider band may not be the best choice. Then again, this also depends on your personal style and how much of a statement you want to make.

What Is The Average Ring Size For Women?

According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the average ring size for a woman is a size 6. However, they also add that depending on their lifestyle, on average most women tend to fluctuate in weight, so adding a quarter size to the ring is often recommended. Fingers also tend to swell during seasons such as summer, so keep that in mind as well when measuring your ring size.

James Allen Ring Sizer Tools

You don’t have to worry about sizing a ring. James Allen’s Virtual Ring Sizer can help you determine your ring size online for free. There are two options available, you can either measure your finger, or you can measure a ring you already own to discover your ring size. Both are accurate and will give you your exact ring size.

What Happens When My Ring Is Resized?

During the resize process, small amounts of metal will be added or removed to increase or decrease the size as needed. As a result, your ring may be slightly thicker or thinner when completed. This is a minor difference and is often invisible to the naked eye.

Your resized ring will be inspected by quality assurance to ensure that our high standards are met and that your ring has been fitted to the size that you need.

What If I Order The Wrong Ring Size?

It’s worth noting that approximately 40% of rings end up being resized. But don’t worry, as we know that this is something that can happen when you’re buying a ring online, we offer free ring sizing for up to 1 year after purchase

Rings That Can’t Be Resized

Unfortunately, some rings are not able to be resized. This may be because of the specific design or material that has been used. Rings made from unconventional materials such as resin, ceramic, jade, or wood cannot be resized because there’s no way to cut and bend the ring- its composition isn’t amenable to the process,

These include:

FAQs

How will I know if I have the right size?

A good ring size should fit snug around the base of your finger without bulging or leaving any indentations. However, the ring should also be loose enough to slide over your knuckle. Check if your ring fits right by pushing it up from underneath and making sure there is a small space between it and your finger. This means there is enough room.

Does band thickness affect size?

Yes, band thickness can affect your ring size. The more a ring covers your finger, the tighter it will fit. In addition, stacking many types of bands, such as a wedding ring set, will increase your ring size. We recommend measuring your ring size with a sizer that’s close to the thickness of the ring that you’ll be wearing.

How to secretly find someone’s ring size?

Planning a surprise romantic and creative proposal? You can easily find out your partner’s ring size without them knowing. One of the easiest options is to simply ask their family or friends. Another way to measure your partner’s ring size secretly is by measuring a ring they already wear.

Are men’s and women’s rings measured using the same scale?

Yes, women’s and men’s ring sizes are measured on the same scale. The average size of men’s hands tends to be larger than that of women’s, so they will fall into the larger category.

Where Is The September Birthstone Found?

Sapphire is found in only a handful of locations around the world. The three most well-known and important sources for the September birthstone are Kashmir, Myanmar (formerly Burma), and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, in particular, boasts the world’s most sought-after sapphires because of their rich, shimmering blue hues. However, sapphires from Sri Lanka are among the most expensive.

More recently, mines and significant quantities of the September birthstone have also been found in Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Madagascar, India, and the United States (Montana), among other countries in Asia and Africa. In fact, Madagascar is fast becoming one of the world’s leading countries of stunning sapphires.

September Birthstone Jewelry Gifts

From elegant necklaces to bold sapphire earrings, the JamesAllen.com September birthstone jewelry collection is complete with various styles, designs, and colors. Making it perfect for those looking to make the ultimate style statement. September birthstone jewelry makes an excellent gift for a number of reasons:

  • Celebrating a special occasion? Sapphire jewelry is a traditional symbol for the 5th and 45th year’s anniversary.
  • That special someone in your life who is born in September
  • Looking for a stunning piece of “something blue” jewelry?
  • Is Blue your favorite color? Go on and treat yourself to a piece of beautiful fine jewelry you’ll cherish forever.

Now, when it comes to celebrities, blue sapphire engagement rings in particular are very popular and have also been associated with the royal family for centuries.

This trend began during the early 80s when Prince Charles gave Lady Diana Spencer a magnificent Sapphire engagement ring which, of course, came with a hefty price tag. The non-traditional and very unique engagement ring caused major controversy, as not everyone in the British royal family approved of the bold gemstone.

Princess Diana’s sapphire blue engagement ring may be one of the most recognizable pieces of jewelry in history and it seems many other stars like Victoria Beckham, Penelope Cruz, and of course, Kate Middleton have followed suit.

Sapphire Birthstone Care & Cleaning

Jewelers use a tool called the Mohs Hardness Scale to rate a gemstone’s general resistance to scratching. Gemstones are ranked from 1 to 10 on the scale, diamonds are the hardest at 10, while pearls are the softest at an average of 3. It’s important to note that higher gemstones are more durable while lower gemstones need a little more protection and care.

Sapphires are ranked 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, meaning the gemstone is highly durable and is not prone to cracking, chipping, or breaking. Furthermore, you do not need to be overly careful when cleaning them.

But, this does not mean you can get away from caring for and cleaning your sapphire jewelry. Keep in mind that at least twice a year, you should check your sapphires to ensure the gemstone is not loose in its setting. Additionally, experts recommend storing your sapphire jewelry separately in its own container or in a soft bag to avoid being scratched.

The Mohs Scale of Hardness

Sapphires can also easily be cleaned at home. Even though you can use ultrasonic cleaners and steam with no problem, soap and water will do the trick.

All you’ll need is:

  • A small bowl
  • Soft-bristled bristled toothbrush
  • Warm water
  • Mild soap

Steps to clean your diamond:

  1. Add warm water into a small bowl with some mild soap.
  2. Soak your sapphire jewelry for ± 20 minutes. If your jewelry seems extra dirty, let it soak longer.
  3. Next, brush the gemstone with a soft-bristled toothbrush and rinse the jewelry with clean water.
  4. It’s very important to dry the gemstone with a soft towel thoroughly.
  5. DO NOT allow the water to stay sitting on the gemstone.

Fun Facts About Sapphires

  • Princess Diana’s engagement ring featured a whopping 12ct oval cut sapphire surrounded by diamonds.
  • The Star of Adam is an oval-shaped blue star sapphire, currently the largest star sapphire in the world. Discovered in Sri Lanka in August 2015, it weighs 1,404.49 carats.
  • Sapphires are often considered one of the Big 3 gemstones, accompanied by Emerald and Ruby.
  • Color changing sapphires exist. Yes, we are just as intrigued as you are. These types of sapphires exhibit different colors in different lighting, shifting from blue in the daylight to a bluish purple in the nighttime under incandescent light.
  • Sapphires and the Ruby gemstone have a lot in common, and many refer to them as ‘relatives’. Both rubies and sapphires form the same mineral corundum, a crystalline form of aluminum oxide. Red corundum is called ruby, while all other gem-quality forms of corundum are called sapphires.

10 Best Simple Engagement Rings for 2023

Ah, the beauty of a simple engagement ring! If you do it right, you don’t have to go over the top. After all, diamonds are the only way to achieve incredible sparkle. Simple engagement rings come in a huge range of designs. You can be assured that less is more.

What makes an engagement ring “simple”? For the most part, it means that it’s free of the more glitzy ring features such as pavè, engraved designs, halos, and multiple accent stones. Simple engagement rings are all about clean lines while also incorporating a limited amount of diamonds and gemstones.

This is the fun part: there are SO MANY types of simple engagement rings! Check them out below, and don’t forget to add your favorite to your wishlist on JamesAllen.com

Back To Basics

The Benefits of Minimalist Engagement Rings

  1. Maintaining fewer diamonds is easier

More diamonds mean more sparkle but also more maintenance. Accent stones trap dirt and require regular cleaning, and the multiple prongs require tightening by a jeweler twice a year. The bottom line is: simple engagement rings are perfect for the no-fuss wearer.

  1. All eyes on your diamond

Go all in on an eye-popping center stone. It will take center stage! There’s little to distract from your sparkling stone. Plus, with the money you save on accent stones, you can invest to the fullest in your dream diamond.

  1. Your wedding ring has more pairing options

A simple engagement ring complements absolutely any style of a wedding ring. Your wedding set will look fabulous no matter which wedding ring to choose. Keep it simple? Glitz it up? Add gemstones? Play with diamond shapes? Yes yes yes yes. Flex your creativity!

  1. Easier on the wallet

Less overall glitz means that there’s less upfront cost. There’s no need to spend a large part of your ring budget on a diamond-studded band. This frees you up to invest the lion’s share of your money in an incredible center diamond or gemstone! Pro tip: go for a lab created diamond to get a 30% larger diamond while staying in-budget!

We’ve put together a walk-through of our best and most creative simple engagement ring styles.

Solitaire Engagement Rings

Everyone loves the classics. And with good reason! Solitaire engagement rings are said to be the most simple engagement rings yet they remain perfectly elegant and timeless. The rings highlight the single-center diamond or gemstone like no other.

Gemstone engagement rings aren’t a new trend. In fact, for centuries, we’ve seen the most glamorous royals and celebrities styled in all kinds of gemstone jewelry. Unlike diamonds, unique gemstones come in a variety of colors, so regardless of the setting or style, gemstones make stunning center stones. Ever considered a sapphire engagement ring?

Split Shank Engagement Rings

Looking for a simple, yet unique engagement ring? You’ve come to the right place! There are various types of split shank engagement rings, but the most common is where the shank (band) splits into two. This creates two separate metal pieces that stem from the center diamond.

Its sophisticated look has won over many A-list brides including Beyoncé, Megan Fox, and Blake Lively.

Swirl And Twisted Bands

A simplistic design but not too basic. These bands aren’t packed with diamonds, but they are packed with plenty of personality! Swirl and twisted bands typically feature a prong setting where the metal band is crafted in a way that gives off a half-circular “swirl” effect around the center stone.

The result is a modern, unique look boasting a highly secure setting.  Whether you’re looking for a striking and minimalistic engagement ring or a thin dual band elegantly twisted together to achieve a natural “woven” look, the options are endless.
