Summer Proposal: Message in a Bottle

Summer proposal
Summer proposal

This summer proposal is for beach lovers or just all around romantics.

There are so many different ways to propose – each proposal story is unique, from the reaction of the person being proposed to, to the look on the face of the person proposing.

What’s important is that the one asking the ‘Will you?’ finds unique ways to personalize their proposal for the girl (or guy) they want the ‘YES!’ from. (Read this for more proposal tips.)

That’s exactly what Rob did, for Char.

SUMMER PROPOSAL ON THE BEACH – June Engagement Moment of the Month

Char & Rob from Parker, Colorado

“I have a deep love for the ocean and wanted to spend as much time there as possible.” – Char

Leading up to the summer proposal

Char and Rob had been together ever since they met in 2007 in Hawaii on a public bus (see, you really can meet your soulmate anywhere!).

Fast-forward years later, they travelled to New Jersey from their home in Colorado, for Rob’s cousin’s wedding. They drove to Rob’s family’s shore house the day before the wedding. Being the beach lover she is, Char of course decided to take a walk down to the beach.

Proposal story

“He pointed down to a beautiful glass bottle with a note rolled up inside.” – Char

Char was merrily walking along the beach with Rob and taking photos, when all the sudden something in the sand caught her eye. It was a bottle with a rolled-up note! She excitedly scooped up the bottle and began photographing it. Rob told her to open the bottle.

She opened the bottle and untied the ancient looking, worn note. On it was written, “To my Angel…” And that was it. She looked up and saw Rob on his knee. Rob began telling Char what for sure were beautiful words, but her state of shock prevented her from actually hearing them!

“I also remember feeling the sun on my back while he was proposing, thinking the clouds had parted for our special moment!” – Char

Rob then pulled out a shiny red James Allen ring box with a stunning yellow gold solitaire twisted yellow gold ring. A simple engagement ring that didn’t need anything more than a gentle twist to add to its brilliance. Char began to cry and jumped up onto Rob with her legs wrapped around him. He placed the beautiful engagement ring on Char’s finger, and continued their day as an engaged couple, with the ring glistening up at Char and the sun shining down on them.

What makes this proposal story extra special is that Rob tailored it to Char; he knew of her love for the ocean, so he made sure to incorporate that into his proposal.

Surprise Proposal Story – What Ends in Olitaire?

surprise proposal

Have you ever been surprised by someone, and thought afterward, “how in the world did I not see it coming?!” Despite all of the pretty obvious clues, the surprise was somehow not ruined for you. When we really want something, we can trick our mind into ignoring things it doesn’t want to see, and to only focus on what really works for us.

This phenomenal mind control was exercised perfectly by Gabrielle – nothing could stop her from being surprised by her boyfriend, Tyler.

Read on for the full surprise proposal story.

A SURPRISE PROPOSAL – ENGAGEMENT MOMENT OF THE MONTH

Gabrielle & Tyler from St. Petersburg, Florida

“He asked me to marry him, and though I did nearly pass out from sensory overload – I said yes!”

surprise proposal - Gabrielle & Tyler from St. Petersburg, Florida

It was an ordinary workday for Gabrielle. Her boyfriend Tyler, whom she had been with for six years, sent her a text message, like any other day. The text included a photo with a receipt titled “OLITAIRE.” Gabrielle, who, like most girls in long-term relationships, was no stranger to engagement ring setting types, gasped. After all, what could end in “olitaire” other than the most popular engagement ring choice – the solitaire ring?

Gabrielle asked Tyler what the picture was all about. Tyler explained that he had invested in a company ending in “olitaire,” and he had accidentally sent her the receipt. Gabrielle so didn’t want any potential surprise to be ruined, that she believed him! I’m sure Tyler let out a sigh of relief when he saw that Gabrielle hadn’t caught on to the sparkling surprise that he had surely been planning for months.

A few weeks went by, with no mention of anything solitaire, or even olitaire. Gabrielle and Tyler arrived at the Don Cesar hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida, for a weekend away with close friends. Gabrielle had some slight suspicions, but she wasn’t sure if this would be the weekend.

When they checked in, the high school sweethearts Gabrielle and Tyler mysteriously received a room upgrade to an amazing suite with a magical view of the beautiful beach and the hotel grounds, complete with enchanting buildings reminiscent of pink castles.

While getting ready for dinner, Gabrielle hoped that maybe Tyler would propose that evening – after all, what could be a more romantic setting? However, when Tyler received a call from their friends telling them to come to meet for drinks at a rooftop bar before dinner, Gabrielle disappointedly assumed that there would be no proposal for her that night; she thought that Tyler would never have changed their dinner reservations last minute if he was planning on proposing, and she knew that a ring box could never fit in the pocket of his tight pants. Sadly, Gabrielle told herself to just enjoy the night, “another evening as an un-engaged human,” as she put it.

On their way to the hotel rooftop, Gabrielle noticed some of the staff staring at her, and began to get nervous. When they reached the rooftop, she was blown away by the sight of hundreds of red rose petals forming an aisle to a romantic table with champagne, a massive bouquet of flowers and what could be none other than a shiny red engagement ring box. A dazed Gabrielle listened to Tyler explaining that the glittering water behind them was the very water that they grew up on, and the city in front of them was where they would come to call home. He then asked her to marry him, and of course, she said yes!

diamond ring

The newly engaged couple then went down to the beach, where there were 200 more red roses in the sand, framing a blanket that was set out for them. On the blanket were candles surrounding a scrapbook Tyler made for this moment, with pictures of their relationship, from their high school years until the present.

The bride and groom-to-be danced in the white sand to the song they had danced to for the first time in high school. Gabrielle then saw their friends and both of their families coming towards them, with tears in their eyes.

A Winter Proposal – Meghan and Ian’s Proposal Story

winter proposal story

The Perfect Winter Proposal

There’s just something about the snow that brings out the inner romantic in us. Who can resist gazing out the window at the ground blanketed with dazzling white snow, or at an individual spectacular snowflake as it falls gracefully into your palm? A snowy day seems to go hand-in-hand with cuddling up with a cup of hot cocoa next to the fireplace.

Meghan and Ian are one couple who has been taking full advantage of the snowy New England weather.

Read on for their winter proposal story.

ENGAGEMENT MOMENT OF THE MONTH

Meghan & Ian from Newmarket, New Hampshire

“I could not have imagined a more magical and more ‘us’ proposal.” – Meghan

winter wedding

Meghan and Ian’s love story began back when they were in high school. The high-school sweethearts, although for sure having caught one another’s eye previously, got together not long before their senior prom.

They had been dating for five and a half years and living together, when one day, they went to enjoy a snow-filled weekend at Meghan’s parents’ house. Meghan, perfectly cozy and content watching movies in her sweats, could not be easily persuaded by Ian (who had a secret plan in mind) to go for a walk outside in the bitter cold. Finally, they reached a compromise: they would go sledding in the backyard, one of Meghan’s favorite pastimes growing up.

After paving a path together in the thick, powdery snow, and sledding down the hill a few times, Ian told Meghan that he’d give her a prize if she beat her own distance. Meghan, happy with her two prizes (a kiss and a hug), wanted to sled down the hill once more before heading back inside – it ended up being the day’s best run. She turned around to go back inside, when Ian called after her, telling her she forgot her prize.

When she turned to him, she saw him down on one knee in the snow, holding a shiny red James Allen box. Inside it was a perfect, sparkling solitaire ring. A teared up Meghan then put her brand new ring on and went to tell her mother her exciting news. Turns out, her mother already knew – she’d been watching from the window the entire time.

A Grand Canyon Proposal – James and Verity’s Proposal Story

proposal story

A Grand Canyon Proposal

A proposal at the Grand Canyon is great. A proposal at the Grand Canyon including a video of the couple’s love story, with a song written and performed by the proposer, is omigod-am-I-living-in-a-fairy-tale fantastic.

Read on for an incredible love story culminating in a dream proposal, and find out what the couple has been up to since!

Engagement Moment of the Month

James & Verity from Neath, Wales

James and Verity’s story began on holiday in Spain (did anyone else just get the Counting Crows’ song “Holiday in Spain” stuck in their heads?), in 2009. Although they are both from Neath, a small town in Wales, it took travelling to another country with their separate groups of friends for them to meet.

“As soon as I saw her at the airport on that trip, I knew I was going to marry her.” – James

Having been together for six years, James waited for just the right moment to propose, after months of planning. After extensive research on diamonds and help from the James Allen team, he was ready. He would do it on their trip to America’s Wild West. For the proposal he had planned, it was a must that he receive the ring at their Las Vegas hotel on an exact day – you can imagine how nervous he was that something would go wrong. However, his nerves relaxed when he saw the ring.

“I need not have worried. Once I hid myself away in the bathroom of the hotel and unwrapped the box to get my first glimpse of the ring, I was blown away. It was everything I had wanted and more.” – James

Now let’s get to the proposal.

After a long drive to the Grand Canyon, they stopped to take in the breathtaking view and take photos. While Verity was busy admiring the canyon, James called her over to look at something, and took out his headphones. She didn’t understand what could be so important to show her right then.

James plugged both of their headphones into the phone. With the beautiful canyon in front of them, they sat and watched a video. Verity noticed a shot of their house in the beginning of the video – it was then that she realized that something big was happening. The video continued on to show their lovable dog Wilson and a song began playing – James was singing! The song told the story of a boy who felt alone until he met a girl on a trip. Overcome with emotion and tears, Verity saw the video end with James holding a sign, instructing her to look at him. She turned around, and there was James, offering her a beautiful James Allen ring in a shiny red box. Of course, she said yes!

Life since the proposal

When couples head off into the sunset, we don’t usually get to hear about what happens after the proposal – what we sometimes forget is that life goes on after the proposal! Let’s hear from James a bit about their lives now.

“Life since our engagement has brought so many wonderful moments, the most special of which being the birth of our first baby! We welcomed our little boy, Ari into the world on the 3rd November this year, and we are so in love with him!

We have also started planning another trip to America, which will incorporate a visit to Yosemite (where we would love to get married!). We are so excited by everything that has happened in the last year and are even more excited for all the adventures that lie ahead for us as a family.”

Welcome to the world, Ari Fox Blake!

From Textbook to Storybook – Customer Proposal Story

Proposal story

How often do we miss out on opportunities that are right under our noses? Sometimes the one thing we’ve been looking for all this time has been right in front of us, or in Benjamin and Candice’s case, in the same classroom. While our heads are stuck in our smartphones (or textbooks!), there’s a whole world happening around us that we may be missing.

Read on for a proposal story that will make you want to pay closer attention to your surroundings.

ENGAGEMENT MOMENT OF THE MONTH

Benjamin and Candice from Manila, Philippines

Benjamin and Candice were law school classmates who had barely exchanged two syllables with each other – Candice at the front of the class, Benjamin at the back – until one day, not long before their graduation; thanks to Walgreens, Facebook and a brother, the two would finally speak. Candice’s younger brother needed a mysterious object that only Walgreens carried. While helping her brother search for ways to bring the product (I’m as curious as you are what that special product was!) to the Philippines, a post of Benjamin in Chicago popped up on Candice’s Facebook newsfeed. She then wrote to Benjamin asking him to bring it back with him, and, as Candice fondly remembers, “the rest, as they say, is history!” It didn’t take long for their law school acquaintance to turn into storybook love.

Upon graduation, the two love-struck lawyers-to-be struggled with the question of whether they should continue dating while the upcoming Bar, which required their sole focus, was looming. Candice then did something straight out of a romantic movie; she gave Benjamin a copy of her graduation picture, with a bible verse written on the back: “God has made everything beautiful in its time (Ecclesiastes 3:11).”

The proposal:

Fast-forward years later, Benjamin lead his girlfriend, Candice one Saturday night into a beautiful cabana and handed her that very same graduation picture (now crumpled with time). He looked into her eyes and asked her to be his wife. “It’s time,” he said. The sparkling James Allen pavé halo engagement ring he proposed with was inscribed with ECC 311.

“The person I have learned to so passionately love and care for held my hand and led me inside a beautiful cabana, and with just the two of us there, he looked straight into my eyes, […]and asked me to be his wife, because ‘it’s time.’” – Candice

Candice said yes, with tears streaming down her face, while the photographers Benjamin had hired were surreptitiously sneaking shots of the proposal.

After their private engagement moment, Candice was further surprised by all of their friends and family, who joined them to celebrate.

6 Wedding Proposal Ideas That Will Wow Your Partner

proposal

Guys – you’ve decided she’s the one and are ready to put a ring on it. That’s all fine and dandy, but how in the world are you supposed to ask her? There are about a gazillion different proposal ideas floating around there on the internet, and you’re also getting confused by having each friend you’ve consulted with telling you conflicting advice…

Well, here’s a new piece of advice – CALM DOWN! It’s her we’re talking about… and she adores you. The most important thing is that you be yourself. The rest is just logistics. Then again, a little advice never hurt anyone. If you’d like to hear from proposal experts, you’ve come to the right place. At James Allen, we know everything proposal. Just take a deep breath, follow these steps, and you’ll be fine.

And ladies, help your man out and send him these proposal ideas – he’ll thank you for it!

Proposal Tips

Proposal Tip #1: Don’t Wing It

Proposal Ideas: Don't Wing It

She may know you love her, but she still needs you to show her every so often. To most women, there’s nothing we appreciate more than when you make an effort. And that could mean anything from picking up your dirty socks from the floor, to take us on a fun date night, to planning the proposal of our dreams. So go ahead, put your thinking cap on and get to work!

Proposal Tip #2: Have Fun With It

Proposal Ideas: Have Fun With It

Just because you’re about to ask her to make an enormous decision which will change your lives as you know it (no pressure or anything), that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a little bit of fun with the proposal. After all, one of the things she loves about your relationship is that you know how to make life fun, in your own, unique way.

Proposal Tip #3: Make it Memorable

Proposal Ideas: Make it Memorable

Nobody forgets their own proposal. That would be weird. But still, make it something that will bring a dreamy look to her eyes whenever she looks back on it. Make it something that she’ll be proud to tell her friends and grandchildren about – something that’s worthy of writing a story about for James Allen’s Engagement Moments. How do you do this? Sorry, you’re on your own for this one. That’s where Step No. 1 (put effort into it) comes in handy. As long as you do that, it’s going to be memorable.

Proposal Tip #4: Value Tradition

Proposal Ideas: Value Tradition

Some of us make a big thing about not conforming to society and paving our own way. However, when it comes down to it, show me one girl in love who wouldn’t like her boyfriend (or girlfriend) to get on one knee and ask her to marry him. It shows respect, and that you’re taking this commitment seriously. We are all connected to the past, to the people who came before us, to the men who knelt down before their brides-to-be and asked the anticipated question, to the women who were taken aback when hearing that question (even if they knew it was coming) and said yes. The very idea of proposing itself is a tradition, as is the engagement ring.

Proposal Tip #5: Enchant Her

Proposal Ideas: Enchant Her

Keep in mind that this is the moment she has been waiting for since, well, pretty much ever. She acted out proposal scenes with her Barbie and Ken dolls, she imagined finding her own Prince Charming when watching Cinderella walk to the carriage in her wedding gown (why do you think Disney Proposals are such a popular choice?)… and now she finally found the one who could give her her very own fairy tale. So it’s your job to give her that magical feeling she deserves – embrace the romantic inside you and sweep her off her feet!

Proposal Tip #6: Be Yourself

Proposal Ideas: Be Yourself

You’re the one she’s going to say yes to – not the proposal. Do something that feels like you, and you’ll both be more comfortable. Don’t try to compare your proposal idea to other people’s proposals – while you should take a look at other proposal stories for inspiration, at the end of the day, it’s you who she fell in love with, and she’ll adore whichever direction you choose to go in.

Now that you’re ready to plan the proposal, it’s time to choose the ring!

She Said “Yes, Sir” – Damaris & Sean’s Proposal Story

Proposal Story

Damaris & Sean’s Proposal Story

People often warn against long distance relationships, claiming that they never work out. Damaris and Sean, however, prove that distance really does make the heart grow fonder. It’s people like them who teach us that love can conquer all.

Read on to get inspired by this exceptional military proposal story.

Moment of the Month

Damaris & Sean from Rockland County, New York

military proposal

Damaris and Sean were college sweethearts. They met in their teens while working at a retail store, and ended up going to the same college as well. They dated for a couple of years, but bad timing and life kept them apart after that.

During their time apart, Sean joined the Marines and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan – a whopping 8,000 miles away from Damaris. The two did not keep in touch… until Sean decided to follow Damaris on Instagram. They began exchanging messages and fell in love again – neither had ever gotten over the other, and distance and destiny (and social media!) ended up bringing them closer together.

“The universe somehow seemed to put us on the same path again, and in a cheesy way we knew it was destiny!” – Damaris

One day, Damaris traveled to Okinawa to visit Sean. Under the guise of an award ceremony, she was escorted to meet Sean in front of his platoon, all information. Sean had cleverly told Damaris that she would be pinning him with a new medal. Instead of a medal, however, Sean’s commanding officer gave him a shiny red box. Sean got down on one knee, beside a shocked Damaris, opened the box to reveal a stunning James Allen ring, and asked her to be his wife.

Damaris said yes, of course, and Sean carried her off into the sunset.

Disney Proposal

Magical Disney Proposal Ideas

Disney Proposal Ideas
white gold vintage infinity diamond engagement ring

Our marriage proposals are meant to be one of the most magical moments of our lives. It’s no wonder why so many lucky ladies these days are asked those 4 magnificent words (“Will you marry me?”) in front of the castle which epitomizes all of the fairy tale enchantment we’ve dreamt of ever since we heard Cinderella sing “so this is love” at the ball, ever since we began imagining meeting our true love, once upon a dream.

For most of us ladies, the fascination with princesses, chivalrous romance and kingdoms never really dies with our advancing age – the wonder that Disney movies ingrained in our little hearts at a young age stays with us forever; there is no erasing the spell that Walt Disney, through his beautiful princesses and handsome princes, cast upon us.

When we are finally blessed with our own Prince (or Princess) Charming, we can’t help but acknowledge that fairy tales do indeed come true (though in a more realistic, often wonderfully messy way). Getting engaged at the place where the powerful allure of fairy dust all began, at the place which makes you feel like magic is alive and anything is possible – at Disney World – is the happily ever after that so many of us wish for.

Read on for some Disney proposal ideas from James Allen customers.

For the past couple of years, however, they weren’t able to keep up with the tradition. On their 6th anniversary, Sergio had a surprise planned for Jeannine. When she reached the final clue, Jeannine’s friend picked her up and took her to get her nails done. Sergio then headed to Disneyland to get ready for his meticulously planned Disney proposal. When Jeanine was brought to Disneyland by her friend, she thought that must be the end of her wonderful anniversary surprises. However, there was much more to come! Should I Propose? 4 Questions to Ask Yourself

Questions proposal

Should I Propose?

So you’ve been in a serious relationship for some time now, and started imagining what the future might entail and asking yourself “Should I propose?” Before you pull the proposal trigger, here are 4 important questions worth mulling over.

1. DO WE WANT TO GET MARRIED?

This may sound like an obvious one, but it can be so easy for couples to get caught up in other people’s expectations – often times without even realizing it – that they forget to ask themselves such a fundamental question.

Notice the phrasing – it doesn’t say, “Do I want to get married?” “Do you want to get married?” or “Do our families want us to get married?” – the operative word here is we. If both of you can’t agree on this question, then think carefully about your next steps.

Should I propose? DO WE WANT TO GET MARRIED?

2. WHERE DO I STAND ON ENGAGEMENT RINGS?

You’re wondering “Should I propose?” But before popping the question, you should clearly define your engagement ring budget. Remember that there is no such thing as a “right amount” to spend on an engagement ring – you can find stunning rings at every price point, from under $100 to upwards of $100,000. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you are the only person who can decide what’s right.

Second, you should think about how you want to pick out the engagement ring. Some people prefer to choose a ring without the help of a partner, whereas others love the idea of making it a shared affair. The good news is there are no rules: just as many people are picking out rings together as a couple as they are alone.

Should I propose? WHERE DO I STAND ON ENGAGEMENT RINGS?

3. WHAT KIND OF RING DOES YOUR PARTNER WANT?

An engagement ring breaks down into two major parts: the center stone plus the band and prongs (aka the engagement ring setting that holds the diamond). The center stone is most often a colorless diamond, though yellow and other fancy color diamonds and gemstones have become more common over time.

Ring settings can vary greatly – from a simple band designed to showcase the center stone, to an ornate setting featuring side stones. There is also a wide array of metals to choose from – white gold, yellow gold and platinum are most common, and rose gold has made a comeback in recent years.

As you’re thinking about rings, you should take a few things into consideration. What does your partner do for work? If, for example, a person is highly active or works with their hands, you might consider choosing a stone and a metal that can withstand more than the usual wear and tear.

Should I propose? WHAT KIND OF RING DOES YOUR PARTNER WANT?

4. WHAT KIND OF PROPOSAL DO YOU AND YOUR PARTNER WANT?

Here at JamesAllen.com, we love hearing our customers’ proposal stories. Whether a remote setting in Iceland or a plane ride over the midwest, your proposal is a chance to celebrate the start of a new and beautiful journey. Before you propose, though, you should know both of your comfort zones with regard to public versus private proposals.

Does she love being the center of attention? Do you mind the spotlight? Would she swoon at a homemade dinner proposal but freak at a flash mob proposal? If you’re unsure, ask her friends and family to chime in – they’re sure to have valuable insight to help strike the right balance between your preferences and hers.

But most importantly, remember this: a proposal is a unique and special unifying moment – make sure you both enjoy it!

And the proposal story of this wonderful couple Alyssa and Tom proves it.

And guys, if you’re planning on proposing, you won’t want to skip this story – use it for proposal inspiration and start planning!

Get out the popcorn, sit back and live vicariously through this worthy engagement tale!

Moment of the Month

Alyssa & Tom from Townsville, Australia

engagement story - Alyssa & Tom from Townsville, Australia

Tom began planning the proposal months in advance, making sure to plan each and every detail carefully. 3 months before the proposal, he sent Alyssa 3 roses. The next month she received 2, and finally one month prior to the big moment, a single rose. Alyssa, completely unsuspecting, didn’t notice the date, and went about her daily routine at work. It was then that her coworker handed her a card from Tom, which told her he had arranged for her to take the day off, and instructed her to get a manicure, buy a new bathing suit (he had put money in her account), and get home by 1:00.

Alyssa excitedly followed Tom’s mysterious instructions. She arrived home at 1 to a candlelit bedroom – their passports and suitcases were on the bed, along with a bottle of Moët chilling on ice. With no hint as to what their destination was, Alyssa packed her luggage and the two headed off to the airport. They were going to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!

They followed Tom’s organized itinerary, and on the last night the couple enjoyed a romantic boat ride complete with beautiful scenery – fireflies lit the trees and brightened their magical night. Surprised that Tom didn’t propose that night, Alyssa supposed there wouldn’t be a proposal on this trip. The next morning, however, after they packed and arrived at the airport (they were meant to be flying home), Alyssa found out that there were more surprises to come – Their trip wasn’t over yet! Next stop: Malé, a beautiful island in the Maldives!

Alyssa had never even heard of Malé and had no idea what to expect. They arrived at breathtaking waters in the Maldives and a resort at Lily Beach, where their bungalow overlooking the water had petals arranged in a heart shape on their bed.

It was then that Tom asked Alyssa to come outside to enjoy the view. When she did, she saw ‘Alyssa, will you marry me?’ spelled out with rocks at the bottom of their private pool. Tom then got down on one knee, showed her the sparkling James Allen ring, and asked a happy-tear-filled Alyssa to be his wife. She said yes, of course, and their fairy tale romance continued on.

The Surprise Proposal that Never Ends: Ben & Danny’s Proposal Story

Proposal

Who said surprises end with the proposal? For Ben and Danny, the proposal day was full of surprises. It wasn’t enough for Ben to just plan the proposal – he wanted to make sure the celebrations would continue.

A Surprise Proposal

Moment of the Month

Ben & Danny from Washington, D.C.

Danny wasn’t expecting anything, since their engagement had been postponed for a while as a result of financial issues.

Unsuspectingly, Danny went to New York for some family time, while Ben was busy planning a surprise proposal. When Danny arrived back to what he thought would be an empty home, he saw that their place had been set up with romantic surprises – Roses, champagne, and a Feyoncé t-shirt to boot! Ben then came out of the bedroom with the sparkling James Allen engagement ring in hand, got down on one knee, and asked Danny to spend the rest of their lives together.

But, the surprises didn’t end there. Shortly after the proposal, the couple arrived at a Baltimore Orioles game for a friend’s birthday. Meanwhile, while the two were celebrating at the game, the rooftop of their apartment building was being prepared for a surprise engagement party!

Ben and Danny no doubt will continue to have many fabulous surprises ahead!

Hawaii Proposal

Hawaii Bound – Donald & Alexis’ Engagement Story

Hawaii Engagement

A Hawaii Engagement Story

How do you plan a proposal to someone who never gets surprised? That’s the question which Donald had when he was brainstorming proposal ideas.

Turns out the answer lay in their ordinary daily life during a lazy summer day in their backyard.

Take a look at their romantic Hawaii engagement story.

Moment of the Month

Donald & Alexis from Kailua, Hawaii

Donald was at a loss for extravagant ideas that would catch his girlfriend Alexis off-guard. As she was usually the one who planned things in their relationship, he couldn’t take her away to somewhere special without her expecting a proposal.

He ended up deciding on something simple and utterly romantic, involving their future plans. Sometimes the simplest things are the sweetest. Donald and Alexis were planning to move to beautiful Kailua, Hawaii, which gave him the perfect idea…

Inviting her to sit outside in the summer sun, he casually brought the Hawaii Lonely Planet book with him. He told her to open the travel book to Kailua, their future home. When she did, she saw that he had carved out a section in the Kailua chapter and placed the sparkling James Allen ring inside the careful cut-out section. The four most beautiful words “Will you marry me?” adorned the page, along with the adventures that were to come.

Taken aback, of course Alexis said “YES!” The happily engaged couple is now “living the dream” in Hawaii.

Kelsey & Drew from Charlottesville, Virginia

proposal stories - Kelsey & Drew from Charlottesville, Virginia

Kelsey and Drew were drawn to each other straight from the start, but the timing wasn’t right. Finally, one lucky St. Patrick’s Day in 2011, they ran into each other and decided it was time to give dating a try.

Their first date was an unforgettable one, at a peanut-filled University of Virginia baseball game. They were hooked. Dating was so fun and easy.

On Labor Day weekend in 2015, Kelsey and Drew headed out to Johnson City, Tennessee, Drew’s hometown. Kelsey was unaware what was in store for her. Kelsey, Drew, Drew’s mother, stepfather and 2 bulldogs all piled into the truck to Drew’s grandfather’s “secret” farm.

After a relaxing cow-filled afternoon and a stroll along the riverbank complete with Grandpa’s anecdotes, Kelsey suddenly heard their song playing – the Avett Brothers’ “Swept Away.” She turned around and saw Drew on one knee.

He asked her to take his last name, and the rest was history.

Best Proposal Reactions: 23 Times She Almost Couldn’t Say ‘Yes’

She Said Yes

The Best Proposal Reactions

Chances are, you’ve been dreaming of some variation of that moment since you were in pigtails and braces – the moment he gets down on one knee and asks you that magical question which makes you believe that all the Disney fairy tales are based on true stories.

What’s harder to imagine is how you’ll actually react when the time comes. How can you imagine how it will feel and how you will react, if most find it hard to even put their emotions into words? It seems that everyone is in a state of shock when they’re being proposed to, often left in speechless disbelief.

This is one of the things which makes it all so exciting – no matter how many proposal stories we read, how many romantic comedies we watch, fairy tales we’ve grown up with, nights we’ve spent dreaming of him to ask us, nothing can really prepare us for our own, unique proposal moment. We can get a taste of what it will feel like from other people’s stories, but we’ll never know how it will really feel until it’s happening to us.

Check out 23 times our ecstatic customers have struggled to get out an almost breathless ‘yes.’

Christmas Proposal Ideas

Christmas Proposals

Some call it “holiday season”, but here at James Allen we call it “Proposal Season.” One of the most popular times of the year to propose is Christmas; it’s a magical day which centers around being with the ones you love and giving. What better time to start a forever with the one you love?

If you’re looking for some Christmas proposal ideas, you’re in the right place. Get inspired by a few of our favorite James Allen Christmas Proposals:

Christmas Proposal Idea #1: Let There Be Gifts!

Max & Anna from Othello, Washington

christmas proposal ideas

Max proposed to Anna in an insanely adorable way. Spoiler Alert: It involved gifts and several love letters! Now there’s a Christmas proposal idea!

“…here we are a month away from spending forever with my best friend!”

She said:

“A very simple, yet extremely sweet and thought-out proposal.

Max came over to my house early on Christmas Eve to exchange gifts before he headed off to his parents for Christmas. He came in with four small gift bags. He had a very particular order in which I was to open them. We took turns opening gifts – I made him go first and then I went.

My first gift had a letter inside telling me different traits and qualities I had that made him love me. Of course, I thought it was the sweetest thing and didn’t suspect anything about a proposal. It wasn’t until the next two gifts (which each had letters in them that got deeper) that I was sure the last gift was a ring! He was proposing!!

As I was opening the last gift, I had started to shake and get really nervously excited. I opened it and it was a bottle of perfume! I remember thinking to myself: can he not catch a hint?! Needless to say I was a bit disappointed, yet still excited about the gift. I remember Max getting up off the couch and going outside. He came back in with this massive box and told me to get in front of the tree. This is when he read a huge letter proposing to me, and when he got down on one knee. 🙂 Of course I said YES! Now here we are a month away from spending forever with my best friend!

Thank you James Allen for the perfect ring!”

Christmas Proposal Idea #2: A Fake Out

Tom & Marie from Parlin, New Jersey

christmas proposal ideas

Proposal fake-outs are an interesting way to go if you want a sure surprise!

“She was in such a state of shock; it literally took five minutes for her to say ‘YES.”

He said:

“It was December – Marie and I had been talking about getting engaged. She knew that I had ordered the ring. Thanks to Angie at James Allen, I knew the ring would be a home run.
After consulting her friends, I was warned that a big public proposal would not be appreciated, and to propose on Christmas or New Year’s might be to cliché. I teased her several times with fake proposals so she would be off guard when the day finally came.

I happened upon a customized Christmas ornament. We had picked up a Christmas tree for her place but didn’t get a chance to decorate it. We were having a party the following weekend and we were busy preparing for it. When she came home from work, I told her I got an ornament for the tree. I walked up and hung it. Marie came closer and stared at it…..and continued to stare at it. I asked her if she noticed the date. She said ‘okay…’ I pointed out that the date on the ornament is today. Still nothing but silence… So, I got down on one knee and proposed.

She was in such a state of shock; it literally took five minutes for her to say “YES”. I asked her what she was thinking when she was staring at the ornament. She was thinking about how awkward the upcoming party would be because all her friends would see this ornament and think we were engaged, but I hadn’t proposed yet. It didn’t dawn on her that I was proposing at that moment.

The real fun part was getting to announce our engagement at the party!”

Christmas Proposal Idea #3: Get Santa Claus in on the Fun

Lorelei & Kevin from Mount Olive, New Jersey

christmas proposal ideas

An engagement ring from Santa himself!

“Christmas once again became a magical holiday for us.”

She said:

“Kevin and I have been together for five years. Our favorite time of year has always been the holidays – especially Christmas time. When our daughter was born in 2012, we started up our visits to Santa, and Christmas once again became a magical holiday for us.

This past Christmas, like many before, Kevin and I decided to take our daughter to visit Santa. We went to one of our favorite places, Johnson’s Farm in NJ. As we were in line to see Santa, I could see the excitement on our daughter’s face; she was two years old and truly believed in the magic of Christmas. As she sat on Santa’s lap, she smiled and looked up at him while we took pictures.
Before she walked down off of the sleigh, Santa said to my daughter, ‘I have a little gift for you, since you have been such a good girl this year.’ Our daughter walked down and handed the small wrapped box to my boyfriend at the time. As he started to unwrap it, he said ‘I think it is for mommy.’

Right then and there my heart dropped and I could not think of a better moment. Kevin got down on one knee and asked me to marry him that night in front of our daughter and the magic that Christmas truly is. I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with this man, and still to this day cannot thank him enough for making our engagement so unbelievably special. It truly was worth the wait.”

Christmas Proposal Idea #4: Make it Personal to the Two of You

Amanda & Brad from Murray, Kentucky

christmas proposal ideas

Two single parents joining families together…

“We just seemed to click. We want the same things in life.”

She said:

“After my divorce, I just started praying that God would send me my soul mate. I was a single mom and just wanted a family. I wanted a good Christian father figure for my son. So I would pray The Lord would send me someone to love my son and me.

Brad & I met four years ago, on a blind date. We had an instant connection; me a single mom & him a single dad. Our kids are one year apart in age.

We just seemed to click. We want the same things in life.

We have had good times & bad just like every couple. Argue, fight, breakup and always get back together. We talked about getting married but always wanted to wait until we could afford it…….

Every couple has ‘their restaurant.’ So do we. We would always take one night and it would be a ‘date night.’ Brad and I were going to ‘our restaurant’. Brad picked me up at my apartment. As we were pulling out of my driveway he said, ‘I forgot my money bag. I have to go back and get it.’ (Brad always carries around a bank bag with money.) I said ‘Oh, just use your credit card. Don’t drive all the way back to your house.’ He said ‘No!’ So we did. We get to his house and I said ‘I’m just going to wait here in the car.’ I didn’t want to go in since we were already running late for our dinner reservations. Brad runs into his house and comes back out a few minutes later telling me ‘Come in and help me look! I think Mariah hid my money bag from me!’ Mariah is his daughter. I laughed and said ‘Ok!’

He ran inside before me and I walked in the door through the garage, turned and there in the living room were candles lit spelled out in rose petals ‘Will you marry me?’ and Brad on one knee. I was so SHOCKED! I screamed!!

Brad could never keep a secret! He would tell me what he bought for my birthday or Valentine’s Day or if I was getting roses) and he KEPT a SECRET!!!! The best secret!!!! I walked up to him and he was holding a rose bud still on one knee. He said, ‘Mandy, we have been through some good times and bad…. And we have always worked it out. We always will. I love you. I promise to always take care of you and Jake. I promise I will never leave you. Will you marry me????’

I’m just crying and in the rose bud was my ring and I screamed ‘YESSSS!!!!!’ We kissed and hugged!!! It was so perfect! He placed my beautiful ring on my finger. I said ‘Brad, this is the best night ever! I love you so much! I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you!’ We went to dinner and we just had the best night. I kept taking pics of my ring. It just sparkled!! It is just beautiful. We plan for a beach wedding….. Thank you for designing the perfect ring! I absolutely love it!!!!!!”
