Our marriage proposals are meant to be one of the most magical moments of our lives. It’s no wonder why so many lucky ladies these days are asked those 4 magnificent words (“Will you marry me?”) in front of the castle which epitomizes all of the fairy tale enchantment we’ve dreamt of ever since we heard Cinderella sing “so this is love” at the ball, ever since we began imagining meeting our true love, once upon a dream.
For most of us ladies, the fascination with princesses, chivalrous romance and kingdoms never really dies with our advancing age – the wonder that Disney movies ingrained in our little hearts at a young age stays with us forever; there is no erasing the spell that Walt Disney, through his beautiful princesses and handsome princes, cast upon us.
When we are finally blessed with our own Prince (or Princess) Charming, we can’t help but acknowledge that fairy tales do indeed come true (though in a more realistic, often wonderfully messy way). Getting engaged at the place where the powerful allure of fairy dust all began, at the place which makes you feel like magic is alive and anything is possible – at Disney World – is the happily ever after that so many of us wish for.
Read on for some Disney proposal ideas from James Allen customers.
“He made [me] the happiest girl in the world, and in that moment [I] realized that dreams do come true. You only need faith, trust and pixie dust.” – Maria
Maria and Ricardo both had big dreams for themselves; Maria moved from Guatemala to Florida to study computer animation; Ricardo moved from Mexico to Los Angeles to work at a movie studio. They met during a marketing production of Metanoia’s film ‘Little Boy,’ and fell in love. They had a long distance relationship for a year, with not one month going by without a visit. When Valentine’s Day came around, Ricardo took Maria to her favorite place on Earth – Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World – and asked her to marry him in front of the castle.
“ […] in front of Cinderella’s Castle in Magic Kingdom, my very own American Prince Charming got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. And I said YES!!!” – Chelsea
Chelsea was in the US for business when she met Ryan, a handsome American man, at his family’s hotel in Cape Cod. She knew right away that he was someone special. When her business trip came to an end and it was time for her to head back to the UK, they exchanged numbers and Facebook details, and vowed to keep in touch. Ryan flew to England to take Chelsea on a date a few weeks later, and the 2 continued to see each other for at least a week every month, not letting distance get in the way… and one magical day, Chelsea’s “American Prince Charming” knelt in front of the Magic Kingdom and proposed.
“After what seemed like eternity, I got an awestruck affirmation. Best day ever! I have yet to wipe the smile off her face.” – Sergio
Sergio and Jeannine met at Disneyland and had a long-standing tradition of going back to their magical meeting place on their anniversary each year. For the past couple of years, however, they weren’t able to keep up with the tradition. On their 6th anniversary, Sergio had a surprise planned for Jeannine. He had created a scavenger hunt for her, filled with bouquets and even a message in a bottle – a poem! When she reached the final clue, Jeannine’s friend picked her up and took her to get her nails done. Sergio then headed to Disneyland to get ready for his meticulously planned Disney proposal. When Jeanine was brought to Disneyland by her friend, she thought that must be the end of her wonderful anniversary surprises. However, there was much more to come! They watched a beautiful water show called Fantasmic, and then, just as the fireworks began, Sergio knelt on one knee, showed her a sparkling, customized James Allen ring, and asked Jeannine to spend the rest of her life with him.
“I was extremely in shock and I didn’t know what to make of everything. So I just hugged him very tight and kissed him.” – Stephanie
Moises took Stephanie to Disneyland for what she thought was his birthday celebration. Little did she know what else was in store for her. Moises casually suggested that they get a caricature portrait of themselves drawn. As the artist drew, a crowd started gathering around them – Stephanie wasn’t sure what was happening. When the artist finished the drawing, Stephanie went to look at it and saw a beautiful drawing of themselves with a thought bubble that said “Will you marry me?” Dumbfounded, she then turned around and saw Moises on one knee, asking her to be his wife.
The Engagement Ring – to Surprise or Not to Surprise
Proposals are still, much more often than not, a surprise. The engagement ring, however, does not need to be. Today, many couples are opting to choose the engagement ring together, and they venture into the ring buying process as a team. Perhaps it’s because women are stronger and fiercer than ever today, and they want to speak their minds and say what exactly they want. Or maybe too many women had been disappointed in the past, receiving a ring that needed to be exchanged for another ring more to their liking and society learned its lesson that the ring could be chosen together by both partners.
Of course, there is a certain timeless romance in having no idea what’s to come and being completely surprised by both the ring and the proposal. Usually, any ring that’s received is adored, as it’s a symbol much more than a material thing. It’s really up to the couple and their particular personalities.
There are several factors to consider:
If you’re the one proposing:
How well do you know your girlfriend’s ring style? Do you think she would be happy with a complete surprise, or has she hinted at her ring preferences? Maybe ask her best friend what they think.
If you’re the one being proposed to:
Do you have a particular setting in mind, or are you open to whatever your fiancé-to-be chooses for you? Do you want the ring to be a surprise, or does the idea of not loving it worry you? If the thought concerns you and you’d like to go ring shopping together, just tell your significant other straight out. You’ll still be surprised by the proposal!
Take a look at this BuzzFeed video of couples who try to design their partners’ dream rings, and decide for yourself if you’d like the ring to be a total surprise or if you’d prefer for it to be a joint effort.
All us ladies grew up with that fairy tale image of romance in our heads. Chick flicks like Pretty Woman and Bridget Jones’s Diary had us dreaming of our own movie love. Whether you’ve yet to find that fairy tale romance or failed past relationships have made you think life isn’t a movie … you’ll be pleased to know that fairy tales DO indeed exist. And the proposal story of this wonderful couple Alyssa and Tom proves it.
And guys, if you’re planning on proposing, you won’t want to skip this story – use it for proposal inspiration and start planning!
Get out the popcorn, sit back and live vicariously through this worthy engagement tale!
Tom began planning the proposal months in advance, making sure to plan each and every detail carefully. 3 months before the proposal, he sent Alyssa 3 roses. The next month she received 2, and finally one month prior to the big moment, a single rose. Alyssa, completely unsuspecting, didn’t notice the date, and went about her daily routine at work. It was then that her coworker handed her a card from Tom, which told her he had arranged for her to take the day off, and instructed her to get a manicure, buy a new bathing suit (he had put money in her account), and get home by 1:00.
Alyssa excitedly followed Tom’s mysterious instructions. She arrived home at 1 to a candlelit bedroom – their passports and suitcases were on the bed, along with a bottle of Moët chilling on ice. With no hint as to what their destination was, Alyssa packed her luggage and the two headed off to the airport. They were going to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!
They followed Tom’s organized itinerary, and on the last night the couple enjoyed a romantic boat ride complete with beautiful scenery – fireflies lit the trees and brightened their magical night. Surprised that Tom didn’t propose that night, Alyssa supposed there wouldn’t be a proposal on this trip. The next morning, however, after they packed and arrived at the airport (they were meant to be flying home), Alyssa found out that there were more surprises to come – Their trip wasn’t over yet! Next stop: Malé, a beautiful island in the Maldives!
Alyssa had never even heard of Malé and had no idea what to expect. They arrived at breathtaking waters in the Maldives and a resort at Lily Beach, where their bungalow overlooking the water had petals arranged in a heart shape on their bed.
It was then that Tom asked Alyssa to come outside to enjoy the view. When she did, she saw ‘Alyssa, will you marry me?’ spelled out with rocks at the bottom of their private pool. Tom then got down on one knee, showed her the sparkling James Allen ring, and asked a happy-tear-filled Alyssa to be his wife. She said yes, of course, and their fairy tale romance continued on.
Who said surprises end with the proposal? For Ben and Danny, the proposal day was full of surprises. It wasn’t enough for Ben to just plan the proposal – he wanted to make sure the celebrations would continue.
A Surprise Proposal
Moment of the Month
Ben & Danny from Washington, D.C.
Danny wasn’t expecting anything, since their engagement had been postponed for a while as a result of financial issues.
Unsuspectingly, Danny went to New York for some family time, while Ben was busy planning a surprise proposal. When Danny arrived back to what he thought would be an empty home, he saw that their place had been set up with romantic surprises – Roses, champagne, and a Feyoncé t-shirt to boot! Ben then came out of the bedroom with the sparkling James Allen engagement ring in hand, got down on one knee, and asked Danny to spend the rest of their lives together.
But, the surprises didn’t end there. Shortly after the proposal, the couple arrived at a Baltimore Orioles game for a friend’s birthday. Meanwhile, while the two were celebrating at the game, the rooftop of their apartment building was being prepared for a surprise engagement party!
Ben and Danny no doubt will continue to have many fabulous surprises ahead!
Turns out the answer lay in their ordinary daily life during a lazy summer day in their backyard.

Moment of the Month
Donald & Alexis from Kailua, Hawaii
Donald was at a loss for extravagant ideas that would catch his girlfriend Alexis off-guard. As she was usually the one who planned things in their relationship, he couldn’t take her away to somewhere special without her expecting a proposal.
He ended up deciding on something simple and utterly romantic, involving their future plans. Sometimes the simplest things are the sweetest. Donald and Alexis were planning to move to beautiful Kailua, Hawaii, which gave him the perfect idea…
Inviting her to sit outside in the summer sun, he casually brought the Hawaii Lonely Planet book with him. He told her to open the travel book to Kailua, their future home. When she did, she saw that he had carved out a section in the Kailua chapter and placed the sparkling James Allen ring inside the careful cut-out section. The four most beautiful words “Will you marry me?” adorned the page, along with the adventures that were to come.
Taken aback, of course Alexis said “YES!” The happily engaged couple is now “living the dream” in Hawaii.

Moment of the Month
Kelsey & Drew from Charlottesville, Virginia
Kelsey and Drew were drawn to each other straight from the start, but the timing wasn’t right. Finally, one lucky St. Patrick’s Day in 2011, they ran into each other and decided it was time to give dating a try.
Their first date was an unforgettable one, at a peanut-filled University of Virginia baseball game. They were hooked. Dating was so fun and easy.
On Labor Day weekend in 2015, Kelsey and Drew headed out to Johnson City, Tennessee, Drew’s hometown. Kelsey was unaware what was in store for her. Kelsey, Drew, Drew’s mother, stepfather and 2 bulldogs all piled into the truck to Drew’s grandfather’s “secret” farm.
After a relaxing cow-filled afternoon and a stroll along the riverbank complete with Grandpa’s anecdotes, Kelsey suddenly heard their song playing – the Avett Brothers’ “Swept Away.” She turned around and saw Drew on one knee.
He asked her to take his last name, and the rest was history.
Chances are, you’ve been dreaming of some variation of that moment since you were in pigtails and braces – the moment he gets down on one knee and asks you that magical question which makes you believe that all the Disney fairy tales are based on true stories.
What’s harder to imagine is how you’ll actually react when the time comes. How can you imagine how it will feel and how you will react, if most find it hard to even put their emotions into words? It seems that everyone is in a state of shock when they’re being proposed to, often left in speechless disbelief.
This is one of the things which makes it all so exciting – no matter how many proposal stories we read, how many romantic comedies we watch, fairy tales we’ve grown up with, nights we’ve spent dreaming of him to ask us, nothing can really prepare us for our own, unique proposal moment. We can get a taste of what it will feel like from other people’s stories, but we’ll never know how it will really feel until it’s happening to us.
Check out 23 times our ecstatic customers have struggled to get out an almost breathless ‘yes.’
1. Marcus & Grace Chicago, Illinois
“When Grace turned around, Marcus was on one knee. The details from there are blurry on all accounts, but one thing we know is she said ‘OF COURSE!’”
“He started by telling me how happy he was with our relationship, and then I blacked out from there. I don’t even remember him getting on his knee or saying yes, but according to the pictures it really happened.”
“He then said he had a surprise for me and took me back into the band stand out of the rain and got down on one knee, pulling this amazing twinkly ring out of his pocket – all I could do was cry and smile! Asking me the one question every girl wants to hear, of course my answer was yes ;)”
“I went through the whole video until the end, thinking he was just being mushy. But then I saw the song titles at the end spelling out “Marry Me?” and I was just speechless. When I turned around, I couldn’t even think of the word ‘Yes.’ But, he couldn’t find the words either because he couldn’t speak through the tears!”
“After the song got through the chorus a few times, which felt like a lifetime, he finally got down on one knee and popped the question. I was crying and nodding yes before he even finished asking. It is the best box I unpacked, ever.”
“In that moment, he got down on one knee with the most beautiful ring in my favorite color box (red, of course) and asked me to marry him! I was so shocked that it took me a minute to get words out; it was like time stood still in that moment and all I could see was a beautiful ring and my best friend staring back at me.”
“I realized he was down on one knee. For the next three minutes, the smile on my face was huge and I remember nothing from what he said. Two weeks on, I am still glowing and I cannot believe my fairy tale proposal happened.”

“That is when he got down on one knee with the ring. I don’t remember much after that – what he said, or what I said. All I remember was jumping up and down, crying and shaking, and saying, yes I will marry you!!!”
“When we arrived, he got down on one knee in the freezing snow and proposed to me. I saw the ring and nearly fainted. During the whole drive back, I had the windows down (in 20 degree weather) because I was in shock from the moment, and every time I looked down at my ring it would sparkle in my face and fill me with so much happiness I thought I was going to faint.”
“When I came out, written in the bottom of our pool was ‘Alyssa, will you marry me?’ I burst into tears of happiness! Tom got down on one knee, showed me the most beautiful ring and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes!”
“Once we neared the bushes, he called my name and I turned around and he was down on one knee. He said ‘Will you,’ and I screamed and said ‘Are you serious right now!! lol.’ Then I started crying tears of joy, and through the tears I said ‘Yes, baby, yes,’ and he put this beautiful ring on my finger.”
“Then when we got up to leave he got down on one knee and said, ‘Before we leave I have to ask you something very important,’ and then he pulled the ring out of his pocket and asked ‘Will you marry me?’ I was SO ecstatic that the man that I am so deeply in love with was asking me to marry him! Of course I said, ‘YES!’ and practically tackled him to the ground hugging him so hard.”
“He starts to play one of my favorite songs, ‘A Thousand Years’ by Christina Perri and then gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him!!! Of course, I instantly start to cry and within a few seconds say YES!!!!!”
“I saw him on one knee but to be honest, I didn’t hear a word of what he said because I was so surprised that I ran out of the room twice, laughing! And the third time I went back to the room, I said yes! It was an amazing evening. Very intimate yet sweet :)”
“He dropped down on one knee, in his hand, the most beautiful diamond ring propped in a box that was a little wet from the beach. Nothing could have prepared me for this moment. I was in complete shock and disbelief. Speechless, my heart racing, I fought back tears as he told me how much he loved me, and how he wants to marry his best friend and be with me forever. I still didn’t know if this was real. I cried like a baby with my hands clasped over my face until he laughed and asked me if I wanted to try it on — I was so overwhelmed with emotion that I almost forgot about the ring!”
“I began to sing to her and she has a bewildered look wondering why I am singing and I get on one knee to ask her for her hand and marriage. At first there was silence because she was very shocked and then she said yes.”
“He is down on one knee with the ring box opened and he says ‘Victoria, Will you marry me?!?’ My first instinct was to kiss him, which I did, then I said ‘YES!’ He stood up and put the ring on my finger and I CRIED, boy did I cry!! For a good 10-15 minutes, every time I looked at my hand and the gorgeous ring I had and was reminded of the commitment Michael had just made to me I would start crying (tears of happiness, obviously).’”
Some call it “holiday season”, but here at James Allen we call it “Proposal Season.” One of the most popular times of the year to propose is Christmas; it’s a magical day which centers around being with the ones you love and giving. What better time to start a forever with the one you love?

Christmas Proposal Idea #1: Let There Be Gifts!
Max & Anna from Othello, Washington
Max proposed to Anna in an insanely adorable way. Spoiler Alert: It involved gifts and several love letters! Now there’s a Christmas proposal idea!
“…here we are a month away from spending forever with my best friend!”
“A very simple, yet extremely sweet and thought-out proposal.
Max came over to my house early on Christmas Eve to exchange gifts before he headed off to his parents for Christmas. He came in with four small gift bags. He had a very particular order in which I was to open them. We took turns opening gifts – I made him go first and then I went.
My first gift had a letter inside telling me different traits and qualities I had that made him love me. Of course, I thought it was the sweetest thing and didn’t suspect anything about a proposal. It wasn’t until the next two gifts (which each had letters in them that got deeper) that I was sure the last gift was a ring! He was proposing!!
As I was opening the last gift, I had started to shake and get really nervously excited. I opened it and it was a bottle of perfume! I remember thinking to myself: can he not catch a hint?! Needless to say I was a bit disappointed, yet still excited about the gift. I remember Max getting up off the couch and going outside. He came back in with this massive box and told me to get in front of the tree. This is when he read a huge letter proposing to me, and when he got down on one knee. 🙂 Of course I said YES! Now here we are a month away from spending forever with my best friend!
Proposal fake-outs are an interesting way to go if you want a sure surprise!
“She was in such a state of shock; it literally took five minutes for her to say ‘YES.”
“It was December – Marie and I had been talking about getting engaged. She knew that I had ordered the ring. Thanks to Angie at James Allen, I knew the ring would be a home run. After consulting her friends, I was warned that a big public proposal would not be appreciated, and to propose on Christmas or New Year’s might be to cliché. I teased her several times with fake proposals so she would be off guard when the day finally came.
I happened upon a customized Christmas ornament. We had picked up a Christmas tree for her place but didn’t get a chance to decorate it. We were having a party the following weekend and we were busy preparing for it. When she came home from work, I told her I got an ornament for the tree. I walked up and hung it. Marie came closer and stared at it…..and continued to stare at it. I asked her if she noticed the date. She said ‘okay…’ I pointed out that the date on the ornament is today. Still nothing but silence… So, I got down on one knee and proposed.
She was in such a state of shock; it literally took five minutes for her to say “YES”. I asked her what she was thinking when she was staring at the ornament. She was thinking about how awkward the upcoming party would be because all her friends would see this ornament and think we were engaged, but I hadn’t proposed yet. It didn’t dawn on her that I was proposing at that moment.
The real fun part was getting to announce our engagement at the party!”
Christmas Proposal Idea #3: Get Santa Claus in on the Fun
Lorelei & Kevin from Mount Olive, New Jersey
An engagement ring from Santa himself!
“Christmas once again became a magical holiday for us.”
“Kevin and I have been together for five years. Our favorite time of year has always been the holidays – especially Christmas time. When our daughter was born in 2012, we started up our visits to Santa, and Christmas once again became a magical holiday for us.
This past Christmas, like many before, Kevin and I decided to take our daughter to visit Santa. We went to one of our favorite places, Johnson’s Farm in NJ. As we were in line to see Santa, I could see the excitement on our daughter’s face; she was two years old and truly believed in the magic of Christmas. As she sat on Santa’s lap, she smiled and looked up at him while we took pictures. Before she walked down off of the sleigh, Santa said to my daughter, ‘I have a little gift for you, since you have been such a good girl this year.’ Our daughter walked down and handed the small wrapped box to my boyfriend at the time. As he started to unwrap it, he said ‘I think it is for mommy.’
Right then and there my heart dropped and I could not think of a better moment. Kevin got down on one knee and asked me to marry him that night in front of our daughter and the magic that Christmas truly is. I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with this man, and still to this day cannot thank him enough for making our engagement so unbelievably special. It truly was worth the wait.”
Christmas Proposal Idea #4: Make it Personal to the Two of You
Amanda & Brad from Murray, Kentucky
Two single parents joining families together…
“We just seemed to click. We want the same things in life.”
“After my divorce, I just started praying that God would send me my soul mate. I was a single mom and just wanted a family. I wanted a good Christian father figure for my son. So I would pray The Lord would send me someone to love my son and me.
Brad & I met four years ago, on a blind date. We had an instant connection; me a single mom & him a single dad. Our kids are one year apart in age.
We just seemed to click. We want the same things in life.
We have had good times & bad just like every couple. Argue, fight, breakup and always get back together. We talked about getting married but always wanted to wait until we could afford it…….
Every couple has ‘their restaurant.’ So do we. We would always take one night and it would be a ‘date night.’ Brad and I were going to ‘our restaurant’. Brad picked me up at my apartment. As we were pulling out of my driveway he said, ‘I forgot my money bag. I have to go back and get it.’ (Brad always carries around a bank bag with money.) I said ‘Oh, just use your credit card. Don’t drive all the way back to your house.’ He said ‘No!’ So we did. We get to his house and I said ‘I’m just going to wait here in the car.’ I didn’t want to go in since we were already running late for our dinner reservations. Brad runs into his house and comes back out a few minutes later telling me ‘Come in and help me look! I think Mariah hid my money bag from me!’ Mariah is his daughter. I laughed and said ‘Ok!’
He ran inside before me and I walked in the door through the garage, turned and there in the living room were candles lit spelled out in rose petals ‘Will you marry me?’ and Brad on one knee. I was so SHOCKED! I screamed!!
Brad could never keep a secret! He would tell me what he bought for my birthday or Valentine’s Day or if I was getting roses) and he KEPT a SECRET!!!! The best secret!!!! I walked up to him and he was holding a rose bud still on one knee. He said, ‘Mandy, we have been through some good times and bad…. And we have always worked it out. We always will. I love you. I promise to always take care of you and Jake. I promise I will never leave you. Will you marry me????’
I’m just crying and in the rose bud was my ring and I screamed ‘YESSSS!!!!!’ We kissed and hugged!!! It was so perfect! He placed my beautiful ring on my finger. I said ‘Brad, this is the best night ever! I love you so much! I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you!’ We went to dinner and we just had the best night. I kept taking pics of my ring. It just sparkled!! It is just beautiful. We plan for a beach wedding….. Thank you for designing the perfect ring! I absolutely love it!!!!!!”
